Rate this book
Ten years ago, Ada Cramer’s brother went missing. Her brother had always been the favored child, and Ada had been the only witness to his disappearance. Her life changed the day the police officer assigned to the case made Ada a promise that she’d find Noah Cramer.

Dylan Easton had many cases over the course of her career as a detective, but only one she would describe as the one she’d never let go of. It had started the day she’d made a promise to a fourteen-year-old girl that she would find her brother.

Ten years after Noah’s disappearance, the two women are reunited when a true crime series wants to highlight the anniversary of the missing boy. Ada is now ten years older and still bitter about the way her life had taken a turn that day, and Dylan is now a detective, on her way to running her own team. When the two women meet up after all these years, there’s an unwanted spark between them that they attempt to deny.

A new lead in the case, mixed with some startling discoveries, has these two women attempting to balance their new and confusing attraction to one another along with the possibility of finding Noah Cramer.

3.5 Stars. This is my first book by Pyland. I have a few of her books, I just never had the chance to read them. With my bad luck with Kindle Unlimited, I decided I needed to read an author most readers enjoy. I didn’t love this, it had some issues for me…. but it was readable and good quality for a KU book. It wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for but it was what I needed at this time.

This is mostly a romance with a little mystery thrown in. It is a dislike to lovers romance. I thought the romance went a little fast considering all their history. I think I would have liked it slowed down a bit. However, it was not insta love which I appreciate. Pyland writes good steamy sex scenes. The problem was I thought there were a few too many. One or two could have been easily cut. I found myself wanting to skim to get back to the mystery, and that is not something that happens to me often with good sex scenes. Even with all the spiciness, the chemistry took me a while to feel, but the book did get there and I grew to like the characters together.

The mystery was a little disappointing for me. It was interesting and I liked that it had some twists, I’m just such a mystery fan that I wanted a little more. This book felt 80% romance 20% mystery. I would have preferred 60-40.

Even with my complaints this was still an entertaining read. Pyland can write there is no doubt in my mind. This is the type of quality I hope for when I grab a KU book. So while it was just a good story, I will not hesitate to read Pyland again. This is currently available with Kindle Unlimited.

For those who have yet to read The Fire by Ms.Pyland, you should give it a go as it had one of the most interesting first meeting between the hs and their chemistry were beautifully written.

I watched Minority Report (too many times) the other day, there was a similarity between that movie and this book and since Ms.Pyland was the author - The Fire is still one of my favorite book, it was a no brainer that I had to read this.

I knew what I read was fiction, but was it too much to ask for some believable dialogues / facts / angst / background / professionalism.

The idea was there but the execution was done quite poorly as - Ms.Pyland added in more dramas that she could handle to solve. When my eyes started rolling and I began to have all these crazy ideas on gardening, I knew that this book was not for me but I finished it because of their love scenes were explicitly hot.

This was my opinion of the book, it wasn't for me but it could work for you.

As another reader aptly put, if you've read a Nicole Pyland book, you know what you're I'm for! This isn't a bad thing at all, by the way. You'll get an interesting theme, some mystery, communication, and oodles of sex once the two mains go forth with their attraction.

Ada and Dylan's age difference actually has a history attached to it, which adds another layer to their bond.

I can see differing opinions on the mystery element, , so I look forward to reading more reviews.

Overall, just what I needed to end the year. I'd say more, but I have New Year's festivities, haha. Four stars!

This was really good. I believe my first read by author. There was mystery, funny witty banter and very hot sex. Lots of chemistry between these two. Very enjoyable ....made more so by being available on Kindle Unlimited!

I've seen so many of my GoodReads friends recommend Pylands stuff, but since I don't tend to like Celebrities or Sports too much I looked at her other works and found this one.

I did really enjoy the mystery element, and the element of hard headed Ada who was a teen when her brother disappeared without a trace, and the then rookie detective of 24 in Dylan promising her she would find him.

10 years later, Ada is a jaded closed off 24 year old and it's the 10 year anniversary of her brothers disappearance. She is roped into a news segment by her parents who still basically blame her for the circumstances. And who else happens to turn up, but Dylan the original detective on the scene who had promised Ada the world, only to leave her alone and hanging... At least that is Ada's view. We find out Dylan never did stop looking, utilizing her own time and resources to the case and regrets promising the then 14 year old Ada something she couldn't deliver.

The two have a combative banter at first, moreso from Ada who puts on a bitchy persona to pretend she doesn't care, and also lashes out because she is infact hurting over many things about her family life, and life in general. Dylan is able to see through her bolstered BS and Ada too see's Dylan and her commitment to her long lost brother.

They become hot and entangled in each other pretty darn fast. If there was anything I would change is that I wish the relationship could have slowed down a bit more at the start... But I can't be that mad at it. Together they are hot and sizzling. There's quite a fair amount of explicit erotic and sensual sex scenes. Their love making and relationship overall becomes more intimate, which I liked - but I DID think there were a few too many sex scenes, that didn't necessarily add to the plot. But again, can I really complain? When they are well written, and between two likable characters - that means enjoyable - and considered the bad porn scripts I've read lately, this was a welcome change. lol.

So by all means, not a perfect novel, but still a damn good one I would indeed recommend. It's got a lot of serious subject matters, between arrogant banter of a woman hurt who is trying to show a snarkier side than she really is, and then opens up more, become softer and has a supportive partner to do it with. The flirty banter and sensuous scenes between two people who deserve something more in their lives just give you hope. Ada's history and how her parents treated her was saddening and upsetting, and also hit a little close to home for me. The investigation into her brothers disappearance was also emotionally well done. I can't imagine how it feels to just not know what happened and wonder in your head for 10 years, especially as a teen child who is being blamed.

So all in all, an emotionally raw tale, that also uplifted and gave me hope along with the sorrow. On Kindle Unlimited.

Review of 'The disappeared' by Nicole Pyland.

Ada Cramer's brother went missing when she was fourteen. On the tenth year anniversary of the disappearance a TV series features the cold case and Ada is reunited with the officer assigned to the case, Dylan Easton. Ada holds a grudge against the officer because when her brother disappeared Dylan had promised she'd find him. But after all those years, what Ada and Dylan didn't expect is an attraction between them. As Dylan investigates a new lead on the case, they have to deal with new and unexpected feelings for each other.

This is an ok romance with a small amount of mystery on the side. For me, one of the issues of this book is the balance between mystery and romance. The title, cover and the blurb suggest that the mystery is going to take most of the plot or at least as much as the romance. Instead, the mains' relationship takes the majority of the book, while the mystery is handled mostly in a rush and as an afterthought. It's a pity because the mystery has good potential and the twist near the end is surprising and original.

The imbalance between romance and mystery also affects the tone of the novel. I was expecting a more somber and sad tone but, instead, the focus of the plot is on the almost constant bickering and banter between the mains. Additionally, the content and the amount of sex scenes in the book are bordering with erotica and don't seem to help setting the tone of the story of a boy's disappearance. Both characters are well-rounded but they are both hard to like, specially Ada. The secondary characters seem a bit stereotyped and the relationship between Ada and her parents feels a bit simplified.

Overall, an ok romance with a bit of mystery on the side and a surprising twist. 3.5 stars.

Decent.
I liked Dylan, tolerated Ada and found the investigation part slightly underwhelming. But it was well structured and well written and I haven't felt like I wasted my time reading it.

All the stuff...

Mystery, cop, romance, twists...yep, this one has all the stuff. It is also well written and has great main characters. What else does one need?

3.5. I enjoyed the banter between the characters the most. I thought they had chemistry but I thought a better job could have been done exploring the dynamic of how they met and layering more complexity in. That was a theme for me overall. Great twist, good story direction but I wanted a bit more. I kept feeling like if we could just explore here and there a bit more and break past these surface elements, the story would have more depth and feel. The book ended along the same way in the epilogue which had so much going on that I kept wondering why certain portions weren’t just chapters. All that being said, I did enjoy the story overall.....I just felt like there was so much potential for better.

I did enjoy this book at the beginning but the more I read the less I liked the relationship between the main characters and where the book was going. The ending was completely unsatisfying.

I read this on the hope that it would be like The Fire, but i was deeply disappointed
I didn’t care about the romance at all and ti didn’t feel the chemistry between Dylan and Ada

I can’t stop thinking about you,” Dylan finally said breathlessly. “I don’t know why. You’re kind of an asshole to me most of the time. I can’t, though.”

I honestly don’t know either, what did Dylan see in Ada that made her fall in love with her, she was rude to her for no reason and kept acting like a child.
Their relationship is unrealistic and I lost count how many times i rolled my eyes because of the unbelievable shit that kept happening!
Even the sex scenes didn’t grab my attention, can you believe it? And i was so tempted to skip them, if that doesn’t tell you how bad this book was I don’t know what will 🤣

I cared more about the mystery element and yet! In the end it wasn’t even solved, what’s the point of writing mystery if your not gonaa solve the case??
And there was more red flag but I won’t get into them

I’m giving it 2 stars because of Dylan, i liked her and she deserve so much better than Ada.

Ada (aged 14) First meets Dylan (aged 24) when her brother, Noah went missing.
Dylan is assigned to the case and she promises young ada that she will find her brother. Ten years on however, there were no leads on his case: and on the tenth anniversary of Noah's disappearance a true crime show wanted to highlight his case again, where Ada and Dylan are forced to reunight once more.
Ada is still very bitter about the promise detective Dylan made to her but it soon becomes clear they have an attraction to each other. This however, is confusing for ADa as she doesn't really do relationships.
This, all added in with some twists and turns that I didn't see coming, Like Oliver were a nice surprise and I would absolutely love to read more of Ada and Dylan's future!
And of course, I will be reading more from Nicole Pyland
You should read this book too. 👻

Holy cow, for a crime novel this sure was hot hot hot! I loved it, I don't think I've read from this author before, what a gem, doing my rounds through kindle unlimited I never imagined the number of great authors I'd be reading.
The dialog was pretty fast but the witty banter was so good, a really dynamic couple that gave life to the story, there was some loose ends with the case but it was part of the mistery I think.
Amazing love scenes!

(I just remembered that I've read Nicole Pyland's "All the Love Songs" before and it was just as good, recommended!)

5 stars. Every single theory that I had about what was going on were incorrect. Nicole Pyland threw me for a loop the entire time and I saw none of it coming. This was a really good mystery with a lot of twists and turns but what I’m really here to talk about is the romance between Ada and Dylan. Allow me to simp for a quick second if you don’t mind.

I’M ON MY KNEES! Holy shit! These two had me thirsting real real bad. It’s an age gap Ada is ten years younger than Dylan’s 34 but the dynamics between them? Delicious. I wanna bottle it up and keep it close. Fucking f e r a l.

Ada is kinda an ass to Dylan in the beginning but I completely understood why. Ada’s younger brother went missing ten years ago and Dylan was the lead detective on the case (so this also makes this kinda forbidden but who cares? NOT ME!) and she made a promise to Ada at the time that she will find her brother. Ten years later they meet up again to do some tv stuff about the case and Ada never forgot that broken promise from Dylan. Dylan for her part feels terrible that she made that promise to her and though they bicker and banter the chemistry between them was SO good. The sexual tension had me wheezing but then when they do hook up? Hottest. Sex. Ever. Ada is very take charge in the bedroom and Dylan is more than happy to let her and I just kept making dolphin noises at my kindle.

They were protective of each other which I love but the scene where Dylan goes off on Ada’s asshole parents for all the emotional abuse they put her through? I’M ON MY KNEES AGAIN!

I loved this, if you couldn’t tell. The romance had me swooning and floating away and I also wanna kick myself because why the hell has it taken me so long to continue on with this series??? I read (and loved) book one eons ago. I’ll definitely be reading book three soon though because Nicole Pyland delivers on everything that I need and more every single time.

My thirstiest review of 2025. No regrets.

Another gem from Nicole Pyland on my TBR shelves! Ada's younger brother disappeared while she jumped from a rope into the lake. She was 14, he was 13. Dylan at 24 is the officer in charge of the case. She makes an error though telling Ada she'd bring him home to her. Ten years later a cold case show gets everyone together for an episode, hoping for new leads. Ada, now 24 meets Dylan, now 34 again. The two women find the other hot. When Ada gets a call from a stranger she goes to the police and asks for Dylan. And so the love story begins.
A gorgeous and Steamy HOT love story, plus a mystery. I LOVE THIS BOOK! 5 stars!!

Ada and Dylan have are so different but they work really well together. The plot is smooth as is the writing (no surprise there from Pyland). I see a lot of myself in Ada for sure, answers a question with a question a lot until she gets called out to cut the bull so I really enjoyed this dynamic.

If I read this stand alone I could’ve probably given it 5* but following ‘Fire’ make that’s a tough sell. If it was up to me, I would’ve added a few more leads for Dylan/the police to follow, probably would’ve made the overall book more thrilling but either way it was wrapped up nicely despite the tragic storyline

Very captivating story

“She’d never been open to love before. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for it now. She did know, though, that what she felt for this woman was more than casual. It was more than liking. She was falling in love.”

Definitely not the story I was expecting after reading the description… but like, wow, was this a really, really, really good book!!

A unique storyline made this a very engaging story. Its very entertaining with a nice flow, intriguing narrative & relatable characters made it an easily enjoyable & interesting read.

It's amazing how Nicole Pyland manages to mix suspense with romance and plenty hot steamy sex. Everything is right. Great characters, interesting plot. It all just fits somehow. Unfortunately I read The Kidnapped before this one. That's not advisable because of spoilers. The Kidnapped was so great though. It made me wanna read the other novels in this series as well. But it's preferable to read them in order.

Such Interesting Stories!

Nicole Pyland’s Fire Universe series are such interesting and complicated stories. And the story of Ada and Dylan fits very well into that complicated universe. I loved Nicole’s Sports series and now I’m finding myself absorbed in this Fire Universe series as well. If you like mysteries that also have HEA endings for a Sapphic couple, this book fills that need.

Sapphic love and cold cases? This was a great story that had me both intrigued with the case and also the relationship. I’m going to read the first book in the trilogy and have pre ordered the third book. The amount of spice was perfect to me 🤌🏻 the way the case turned out was definitely something I wasn’t predicting at all!

Nice story

I hope this review doesn't come off as a back-handed compliment. You should definitely read this story; it's sexy and sweet and a decent read. However, if you're new to Nicole Pyland's works then you MUST also read her other books as they were much better. ALL THE LOVE SONGS was deeply touching, as was THE FIRE. The entire CHICAGO SERIES was excellently done and is about a group of friends you'll fall in love with. THE MOMENTS was okay and definitely unique in it's storytelling approach. This book just didn't affect me as deeply as her original works. Also, grammatical errors were really frustrating to see. This author has published many successful books, so where is the editor?

Superb Story

Absolutely loved this book it kept my interest from beginning to end. It’s not quite a May December romance as there’s only 10yrs between Ada and Dylan but love can happen after loss. The only minor niggle I have is the ending is a bit ambiguous perhaps there’s a 2nd book to follow I sincerely hope that there will be

This mystery surrounding Ada and her brother, the characters, the personal relationship between Ada and her parents—the professional and personal, complex relationship between Ada and Dylan, all of it had me expecting a totally different ending. So, to say that I was surprised by the twist, yeah that’s a thing. Pyland creates great characters with intricate personalities, and a plot that will keep you engaged to the end and hopeful as you turn each page. I love the witty banter between Ada and Dylan and their willingness to give to each other what the other desires. If their story continues, I am totally in. I was incredibly intrigued, entertained, and surprised. I think you will be too.
