Witches of Palmetto Point #10

Enduring Spirits: Witches of Palmetto Point, Book 10

Rate this book
Ghosts are really bad at personal boundaries...and so is her family.

It’s been a long year for Charlie Payne…and it’s only April. After her near-death experience a few months ago, she’s on the road to recovery, healing her energy. But reconnecting with the spirit world has its drawbacks. Every needy spirit within a 100-mile radius seems to show up when she least expects it. And her dreams? They’ve become more like waking nightmares.

When her recurring dream of a boy trapped in the trunk of a car wakes her night after night, she becomes obsessed with finding him. She may be too late. It's possible the boy is like all the other ghosts in her life - haunting her for attention. But if she's wrong, then a child in danger needs her help.

If that’s not enough to deal with, throw in her crazy family demanding her time, a pagan celebration to prepare for, and an unexpected consequence from her encounter with a vampire – Charlie doesn’t know which way is up and needs to set some boundaries so she can focus on what’s really important.

But setting boundaries with her family can be tricky, and setting boundaries with the dead? That can be downright dangerous.

Enduring Spirits is the 10th book in the Witches of Palmetto Point series. If you like books filled with supernatural suspense, including ghosts, reapers, demons, vampires, psychics, and witches, then you'll love this series.

ENDURING SPIRITS is a quick, fun read. Ms. Wendy has taken the story in a new direction, which includes having chapters from the point of view of other characters, even Evan.

This is probably the longest series that I've ever read in my life. In general I'd say it was a guilty pleasure. I think I enjoy the family as much as the story. It's relaxing and exactly what I'm looking for on the days when I feel stressed.

Charlie Payne's supernatural powers are ever evolving. Her brush with death in a previous book along with the showdown with a certain supernatural creature in the last book has her again experiencing new phenomenons with her powers. This book was much more tamed than other books in the series but did have a twist you didn't see coming. Lots of family time mixed with humor, heartache and changes.

I'll admit I've enjoyed this entire series, I think Wendy does a great job developing the characters and getting the reader really invested in their relationships. More than once I've found myself staying up late at night to finish the current story because I have to see how it turns out and each book contains at least one unexpected plot twist. With that said, there are two things that really hold me back from giving this a 5-star rating and, unfortunately, neither of these have improved as I've made my way through the entire series which is disappointing as I'd expect some improvement as the Wendy's style matures:

1) The resolution is usually anti-climactic. By the time you get to the end of each book, you've invested at least a few hours of your time getting immersed into the story only to find the entire mystery/suspense wraps up within one page, maybe two. I've been left wondering "wait, is that is?" more than once which is disappointing.

2) Grammar/spelling. Good grief, this should be table stakes for a writer and certainly an editor. Wendy either needs to use grammar check and/or fire her editor, not one book in this series is free from errors. From incorrect pluralization (the plural of car isn't car's) to just lazy editing ("he look over his her shoulder") - it's like Wendy was editing the story but forgot to change the gender when the focus character changed. This was so distracting it became frustrating at times.

Would I avoid this series because of these issues? No, not necessarily, but they do make for a disappointing experience as a reader.

I've read all the books in the series and I've enjoyed most of them. It does seem like the longer the series goes on the shorter the books get, but I'm okay with that. The stories are always good and leave me feeling satisfied with the ending and the continuation of the story of Charlie and friends. I really do enjoy all the characters, but I got two questions about this book.

1.) Where did Joy go and why was everyone so mysterious about it?

2.) What's the deal with the picture of the little boy on her desk?

I hate it when authors just throw shit out there and don't ever explain it by the end of the book. Anyone have any idea? Did I miss something?

Much more character based than plot based in this one, which was great. It keeps the reader invested in the characters they've come to know and drives the overall plot line of the series forward without falling into the easy trap of yet another mystery to solve.

Another Palmetto Point winner!

I really enjoyed the multiple story threads that were woven throughout this book. I am not sure how I feel about Charlie finding out she is going to be a reaper one day, but it is definitely an interesting turn of events & I am sure the author will have some fun with it. I kind of wish we'd have seen a little more of Jason & Lisa working things out instead of just hearing about it second hand, but it seems like Jen, Lisa, & Daphne each have their own book coming up, which will be a nice change. My only complaint with this book is that after all the build up to the kidnapping, it just felt like it was over really quickly, & I thought that the wrap up of Nathan & Lottie was a bit rushed, too. I still thought this was a great book & I will definitely be continuing the series.

Good

Good read but the editing is terrible, as usual. Slows the read down and makes it a bit choppy. Could be a very smooth read otherwise. Also the food description gets a little overwhelming in this one. Lots and lots and LOTS of food described.

I've read the entire series, and while I have enjoyed all of them, this one exemplifies all that I find mildly irritating about the series, which clearly does not irritate me enough to stop reading them(I love details like the ghost chicken!). . For one, I feel like there isn't ton of peripheral character development- and even when there does seem to be development, it's thrown aside in the next novel. For example, her ex husband-he's always been an asshat, and for a bit he wasn't-but then he was again, and frankly, I'd rather read about evolving relationships and somewhat successful coparenting than about the main character sanctimoniously fretting every novel about how if he doesn't stop he will ruin his relationship with his son. Ok Jan. Secondly, the premise has changed a lot, I really enjoyed the earlier novels where she was working to solve cases-it was frankly much creepier and better done than the later ones. I found her move to the DAL to be meh at best, but seemed to be picking up pace. But then this novel, after introducing so many other characters and creatures, and even the one vampire hunter guy, who seemed to be on the line for a new love interest, she threw all of that aside again, in a favor of a more meandering story with not a whole lot of tension or creepiness, which felt like a wasted opportunity for me. Not to spoil anything, but the direction she takes the character towards the end of the novel was really disappointing, particularly when you consider how much time she spent building up the other stuff. It also felt like yet another wasted opportunity to explore more tension and maybe something a bit creepier and darker, but then suddenly it was all ok, which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, even when adding some throw away lines about the process or whatever. I get that she wants to move on to something fresher, so maybe it's for the best.

Enduring Spirits is the 10th book in the series Witches of Palmetto by Wendy Wang. I am remiss to have not written reviews for each of the previous nine books in this series. The bald truth is that I have devoured each one and not taken the time to write reviews. I owe this author a sincere apology. These books are simply incredible and I am not normally a paranormal reader.

Readers should definitely begin with the first book, Haunting Charlie, and read the series in order because each book brings in new characters and the family grows exponentially. Book 1 begins with psychic Charlie Payne, who sees and communicates with ghosts. She descends from a long line of talented witches: Evangeline, elder and head witch; her daughters, nieces, nephews and cousins include Lisa, Daphne, Jen, Ruby, Charlie and Evan. Uncle Jack, widower of Evangeline’s late sister, lives in South Carolina and is home base for the family. He is a retired doctor who has no paranormal abilities.

Charlie assists the sheriff’s department and Deputy Jason Tate to solve cold cases. Other fascinating characters brought to the family are Cameron Reed (FBI Agent), Ben Sutton (leader of Defenders of Light – DOL regulates witches and supernatural creatures), Tom Sharon (reaper), Tomeka and Darius Fowler (sister and brother witches).

This book has parallel stores going on. One features a persistent ghost who tries to convince Charlie to help him prove his wife killed him and the other is about a young female ghost who needs help reaching out to her lost love before he dies. At the same time this ghost needs help she is trying to help Charlie foresee the details of an upcoming kidnapping of three young adults, one of which is Charlie’s son, Evan. The plan includes holding the youngsters hostage in the ghost’s former home.

Enduring Spirits- book 10

Again with the mistakes!
This author has great imagination and a way to tell a story, but the mistakes takes a hit when reading.
In one of the last chapter’s, Tom says, “ No, because you see you wrong and you want to right it.” (Chapter 33)
In another, Tom references William and himself but uses the pronoun “I” in the predicate of the sentence.
This book is creepy! Charlie may be getting her psychic powers back, but when it comes to the possibility of a child or children being hurt in any way, it’s disturbing.
Carl and Hugh were creeps, and I love how Lottie shows up or “out” to Hugh scaring the daylights out of him.
Jason and Lisa, I’m so happy for those two.
The only weirdness that really sticks out is Charlie turning into a reaper now. Well, not right away, but whenever.
Ms. Wang, if you can make it through one book without so many grammar mistakes, I could certainly see me recommending your books your books for others to read. They have hope, love, sadness, loneliness, and some great humor in places.

Mixed Feelings

I really had mixed feelings about the direction the main character’s life is suddenly developing toward, and almost knocked an entire star off the rating. But, in all fairness to the rest of the book, I realized it didn’t deserve that much of a ding.
I’m not going to put the spoiler in here, but will let others determine their own feelings about it. You’ll know it when you read it!

This book had a lot more mini-plots interacting and overlapping with one another, but it was kind of nice to take a break from some of the “heavier” plots from past books.

Looking forward to the next and anxiously awaiting the release of the next two. I’m hoping that will be soon-since we’re at the middle point of the year already. By looking at past release dates though, I have a feeling it’s going to be at least a few more months. Bummer.

Disappointing

This was the most disappointing book of the series so far. Without revealing too much, I was disappointed with the storyline and the way a couple of the characters were handled. I felt like they deserved better. And one character has been hanging around for way too long already, namely Tom. There is nothing endearing about him at all; in fact, he's a bit creepy, and not because he's a Reaper. His character has no depth at all, and his only purpose is to fawn all over Charlie. It's gotten old and tired. And Charlie doesn't seem to be true to her initial character anymore either. Too much time is spent trying to make other characters relevant while her storyline seems forced. Not happy with this book at all.

Always awesome

If time-to-completion tells you how good a story is, I can say this took me just about four hours to finish. I had to stop to eat and sleep. But aside from that, I could NOT put this book down.

If you've read other books by Wendy Wang, you will love this book. The Witches of Palmetto Point series is fantastic and the characters are so lifelike.

Charlie Payne's evolution as a witch has me spellbound, for lack of a better word.

The worst part about finishing a Witches of Palmetto Point book is that I have to wait for the next one.

Consistently One Good Story After Another

Often, the quality of a series starts to diminish and I stop reading before the series ends but this series is consistently good, the characters well drawn, the ghostly and personal adventures ongoing and the plot twists everywhere...I never saw Charlie’s new career path coming, you are in for a big Charlie surprise about her in this story plus the congenial ghost of George Allen finally gets his due and Lottie’s ghost shows us true love can be forever.

Still happily hanging in with this series. Ongoing issues with ghosts pushing on Charlie to help them (or others) while she juggles her job with DOL and helping Tom at the funeral parlor and rolling her eyes at her teenage son's attitudes. Family and friends and colleagues have various parts throughout and add lots of color to the plot and subplots. Again, a light and easily entertaining read. Again, I implore Ms. Wang to hire better copy editors. The grammar and punctuation and dropped words (especially verbs) irritate and all around just plain sloppy.

I really have fallen in love with this series and I know I have said it with each review but with each book the series gets better. The bonds of the characters are strengthened by what they encounter and get through together.

You learn more about them all individually and as a family unit. Everyone deserves to have family that love you as much as these ladies (and the men in their lives) do. People who trust them implicitly and have each others backs.

I can't wait to dive into the next book

Charlie and company are helping the police in trying to solve a mystery of children that go missing when picked up from school by two men possing as ride share drivers and kidnapping them. Also Charlie helps a man George Allen who died at the hands of his wife leaving him for another man which happens to be George Allen's ex best friend who he knew in high school. Charlie helps him get the facts straight on who is responsible for his death. Hope you enjoy this one like I did.

The ghosts are back

Charlie's healing is going well but her spirit visits is becoming a bit overwhelming for her. And her visions, well, are they real, have they already happened, or are they yet to come? So many questions all while balancing work, travel, having an ornery teenager and family. I love the characters in this series and I'm excited for the next one to learn more about Jen's past. This really is a great series. Highly recommend

I’ve been waiting and waiting for this book to come out! So excited to have Charlie and her family back.
She’s working through her issues since she lost her powers, and is back to seeing spirits. I enjoyed the spirits a lot too. Definitely some unexpected twists and turns both in the spirit world and in Charlie and her family. I can’t wait for The Kitchen Witch to come out!!

Always interesting and compelling stories

Wendy Wang always has enough plot twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The characters are well drawn and always interesting. I can't wait to read what Wang comes up with next. My only criticism, the editing is not good. Lots of errors.

Excellent!

I loved the story. Those pesky ghosts are driving Charlie insane. Between haunting her dreams and the visions she's getting she doesn't have a minute to herself. These characters are wonderful and I love the fact that these stories are set in my neck of the woods. Great read.

I never want this series to end

I have become so invested in Charlie and the rest of the main characters lives in this series. I feel like they are real people I know personally at this point. Wendy Wang has done a phenomenal job with these books. I'm sad to know I am quickly running out of books in this series. It will be like losing an old friend.
