Rate this book
“Without a doubt the ultimate guide to werewolves”—and survival tips for when the snarling shapeshifters go on the prowl (HorrorNews.net).

The history of lycanthropes stretches back to man’s beginnings. From cave drawings and tribal folklore to the Inquisition and the 20th century, man’s fascination with werewolves has never wavered. The field of study has been ripped wide open, with new information uncovered daily.

Now there is finally a book that covers all the diverse elements of these cursed but greatly misunderstood creatures. From the bloodstained history of Europe and into the New World, especially the United States, these creatures have been documented like no other.

But there is also a need for practical information. When Werewolves Attack supplies just that type of insight. How do you detect a werewolf when they are in human form? What if a family member is a werewolf? How do you defend yourself from an attack, in terms of weaponry and fortification, whether you are inside or out in the woods? How do you escape from an attack of savage lycanthropes?

Don’t be caught flat-footed again. This is the field guide everybody needs to protect themselves and their family.

This book is my kind of book! It is a book I listen to immediately after downloading and one I will listen to again in the future. I love the stories about werewolves, shape shifters it’s all in my wheelhouse and I was so excited to get this book and was not disappointed. I totally enjoyed it and I recommend it. The author narrated it into me that was a plus I listen to the 2021 edition… I believe? I know it’s the latest if you want to know everything there is about werewolves and how to defeat them you need to read this book. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

I had no idea what to expect when I picked this book up, but I'm very glad I did pick it up. The first part of it deals with history, and you find yourself thinking, "Wait. Is this book SERIOUS?" It's interesting. Then it gets fun, and you realize that the author has much knowledge on the topic, and he is blending folklore with history with news from the past 50 years, and it is a wonderful blurred blend of all things werewolves.

I'm a huge fan of the film "Monster Squad." While reading this book, I couldn't help but imagine that had this book been around at the time, the squad would have had this in there clubhouse library as cherished resource book. This book not only entertains and scratches that werewolf itch you might have, it also was informative about REAL events. I would read something and wonder, "Is that for real." A quick search online and sure enough, there it was. I had heard of the Jersey Devil and the chupacabra, but I had never heard of the Bray Road Beast. I may check out a book about that.

I believe my copy was published in 2015. The last half of the book had some written errors that could use some editing. They felt like cut-and-paste errors. One sentence started in the middle, and sometimes there were duplicate words. My hope is that in later editions, that can get fixed. The content of the book is wonderful, though. I'm definitely going to check out the author's other similar book, "Vampires Don't Sleep Alone."

When Werewolves Attack by Del Howison

Special Note: This is the first time I've read and reviewed a book like this. It may be a little rough, because it's outside my norm.

When Werewolves Attack was released in September 2010 and published by Ulysses Press. Del Howison has edited a number of anthologies. He has edited a number with Jeff Delb Dark Delicacies, Dark Delicacies II: Fear, Dark Delicacies II: Fear; More Original Tales of Terror and the Macabre by the World's Greatest Horror Writers, and Dark Delicacies III: Haunted. He helped in editing The Book of Lists: Horror with Amy Wallace and Scott Bradley. He contributed a story to an anthology titled Midnight Walk. He co-wrote Vampires Don't Sleep Alone: Your Guide to Meeting, Dating and Seducing a Vampire with Elizabeth Barrial under the pen-name D. H. Altair.

When Werewolves Attack is a “field guide” on how to deal with werewolves. It tells of the history of werewolves, some of their traits, how to spot them, and how to deal with them. There is also a section of werewolf myths and facts, along with a section about some of the legends dealing with werewolves.

Criticisms:
1) Repeating. There seemed to be a lot of information that was repeated. It wasn't a bad thing, it was just a little annoying after the third time reading the same thing. It was a bit distracting, and it took away from any new information that could have been presented. This isn't a huge complaint, it's just an annoyance I had.

Praises:
1) History. The history of werewolves was really interesting. Learning about where the myth may have come from was just interesting. I never really expected this to be that in-depth with the history. I may not have known a lot about werewolves, but after the this I feel like I know a little more about the mythical creatures.
2) Humor. A lot of subtle humor in this 'guide', and it was a welcome change. For the most part, this book takes itself fairly seriously. That makes the humor that much better, along with more potent. There were a number of times that I found myself smiling with some of the quick-witted, unexpected quips and jokes. The best one that comes to mind is when talking about the Twilight saga, which is unfortunately mentioned, to ask an adolescent girl. All in all, I was surprised by the amount of humor and jokes.
Side Notes:
1) Pictures. The pictures inside the 'guide' were really amusing and had me smiling. I didn't expect that and they were a welcomed change.
2) Timeline. The timeline at the end of the book that tells of the history of werewolves was interesting and really did a good job at summing up the book as a whole.
3) Cover Art. When Werewolves Attack has a bland cover, but works. There isn't much to really mention about the cover. The title is noticeable and I do like the claw marks on it. Other than that, it's a bit generic.

Overall: 5/5
Final Thoughts:
When Werewolves Attack is hard for me to review. It's just not my kind of book and it's really outside the norm for me. Thankfully, it is still a fun and interesting read. The only issue I had with it was that things seemed to be unnecessarily repeated. It's small complaint, but I did get annoyed with it. Other than that, I really enjoyed learning about werewolf history. That section was my favorite part of this guide, by far. It was interesting and I learned a few things that I didn't know. Also, I enjoyed the humor that was found. The whole book had this kind of subtle humor to it, even though it seemed to take itself fairly seriously. The humor really made reading enjoyable and not a chore. Recommending When Werewolves Attack is hard for me to do. I would say that if you like these kind of guidebooks, pick this up. I would so recommend this to those who like werewolf lore. For an average reader, it may interest you and if it does, pick it up.

"When Werewolves Attack" promises to be a guide (not the ultimate guide) on werewolves. The pages of this book are chalked full of interesting stories of folk-lore and legend as it tackles the all-encompassing genera of lycanthropy.... just remember to take it all tongue-in-cheek.

Firstly, I will say that for such a small book on something as cryptic as lycanthropy, I wasn't expecting anything really in-depth. As far as information, this book is a great starting point. It covers all the basic types of werewolves throughout history-- from those who require a totem, belt or amulet provided by the devil and imbued with the power to change into a wolf form to those who were cursed or bitten and it also includes information those who consider themselves werewolves but don't ever go through a transformation.

Some of the werewolf stories from history that are told include that of madman Peter Stumpp-- a cannibal killer who confessed to the use of a magical belt which would transform him into a wolf. It also includes the story of Gilles Garnier, a frenchman who, in December 1573, was accused of being a werewolf after he was seen carrying the corpse of a dead child. My favorite, however, was the 1588 story of a werewolf in Auvergne, France whose paw was hacked off... but I'll save that one for you to read.

The historical information was great. The book listed some dates, locations as well as instances of werewolves in books and film. When you get to the information about how to discern who is a werewolf and how to prevent an attack or how to tame a werewolf in the family... well... let's just say it was a fun read.

I would say this book is worth picking up because it provides a short but detailed history of werewolves... and a few quick stories. If you're not a werewolf snob, it also provides a humorous angle to the whole werewolf curse.

Reading this book did make me want to watch MTV's new TV series too... so if you get a thirst for some sexy wolves on the silver screen, I recommend checking that out too.
