Young men are disappearing in Chicago, and the vampire sheriff has asked for Sam Harlan's help.
With Sister Callie Calahane by his side, Sam will push himself to the limit to find out what happened to the missing men - even if it means dealing with the devil.
Deal with the Devil Sam Harlan, Vampire Hunter, Book 4 By: Kevin Lee Swaim Narrated by: David Loving This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. I am in love with this vampire series. This isn't your regular vamp hunting book. The more you kill, more more you turn into them in some ways. This book kept me glued to my tablet! Sam made a big change in this book, I didn't see it coming. Like the others, it has fast action with a faster pace. Great plot, well developed characters that I have come to love. A new and over interesting characters is introduced that is very unique! Wow! So creative and never dull! Kin love the writing flow, dialogue and interaction between the characters...that's what makes this special too. The narrator is fantastic! The feelings, voices, the characters, all are always spot on! Great performance from start to finish!
This series is gradually getting better and better. The jarring elements from book three have been smoothed out and the world-building continues to creep ever outward.
It's strange to say, when talking about a simple vampire hunter tale, but I really enjoyed the metaphysical elements. The basis of the argument is not new: Free-will and worldly intervention by God are incompatible. Many people have explored this concept before. I just like the way Swaim has approached it from so many different angles in this story.
Oh, and I love his representation of Satan. I got the vibe that Lucifer only offered temptations so that individuals could express their free-will, thus more clearly defining who they truly are. He didn't seem to care about which choice was made. Interesting stuff.
Another great outing for Sam and Callie, loads of intrigue and gratuitous violence. We meet some even meaner Vampires and some horrible normal people who could easily pass for homicidal nut jobs. I loved the religious aspect and the way the author shows how Sam's world works, I could easily imagine living in a world such as this. Who's to say this isn't the world we live in, you have to have faith. A really great reading experience, this is the fourth book in the series and it gets better with each book. Fab
Disclaimer. I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.
What I liked about the book - This is the fourth book of the series and I had read only the third book before this. I had found that book to be just alright, nothing extra ordinary. But when I finished reading this fourth book, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that this book is so much better in every aspect. Sam's character has so much more depth in this installment and it makes you connect with him. The plot is way more intriguing and thrilling too. I wanted to listen to it all in one sitting.
What I disliked about the book - Nothing specific that I can think of.
Narration - Narration by David Loving is very well done. He brings the story and world to life. I was lost in the story, largely thanks to the immersive experience.
Can the author please hurry up and write a sequel each week? Seriously, I couldn't put this book down! The characters are so richly developed that they feel like I know them on a personal level. I did notice a couple of errors but it the grand scheme it didn't matter because the rest of the storyline more than makes up for them. Keep writing!
When the Vampire Shefiff asks for your help, you help him! Which is exactly what Sam and Sister Callie do, but things aren't what they seem and poor Sam and Callie are in way over their heads. This could be the end for the dynamic duo!!
This was the best of the series so far. More action and adventure, more vampires, more killing and just more of everything!! The plot was more intense and had some truly surprising twists. We learn some things about some of the characters and Sam and Callie are in a fight for their lives. It was a roller coaster from start to finish.
We are introduced to some unique characters with this one. We get to meet some of the old ones and meet some vampire royalty. We also get to see more of The Sheriff, which I loved because is such an intriguing character. Thoroughly enjoyable edition to the series and I want more!!
David Loving read this well and was clear and concise, I did feel like there was something missing from this performance though. I can't pinpoint it but he wasn't as good reading this one as he was the previous one.

This is the second book I’ve read/listened to by this author. I’ve previously listened to Hard Times. Despite not having listened to Book 1 or 3, I find these stories easy to follow. The are not complex and each are essentially an individual story, despite being a part of a series. There is a main story thread and it comes to a conclusion at the end. There is some story carryover, hence the series. This book has Sam and Sister Callie trying to determine why so many men are disappearing in Chicago. It’s not really Sam’s home turf, but with the direction of the vampire Sheriff they inquire with several of Chicago’s head vampires, and not all are as they seem. Of course it does not take long until they are in deeper than they expect and things start to get messy. They acquire help from someone unexpectedly, but it’s not clear if this is enough to overcome the obstacles.
This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( David Loving ) and I would love to listen to more. Once again he does a fantastic job narrating. He has the right amount of nonchalance and covers the tense moments well too. His female voices are good.
There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence. There is the very occasional swear word if I remember correctly, but it’s not offensive.

While I have enjoyed the previous books in this series, this is probably the strongest yet, it almost seems like the author was more comfortable with his creation in this one and plot points that are likely to have a longer-term impact on the series didn't disrupt the overall flow of this book either.
The narrator's performance was again a strong one, suitably distinct voices for the main characters and a clear tone that made for an enjoyable listen overall.
If you are considering this book, it is well worth a read/listen, but I would recommend starting on an earlier book in the series since those are also enjoyable and will allow you to see the writer and characters grow together.

I admit, this is the first in the series that I've listened to, so I probably can't give a "full/thorough" review, but I think I got the gist of it, and I'm now going to get the others also, because I loved it!! Loved the writing and the narration, and the story was dynamic! I love Sam & Callie, great characters and I look forward to reading more. I'd DEFINITELY recommend it! :) Great job!
