This is my third book and to this point, it's my favorite. I wanted to create a character that the reader could get behind and connect with, while at the same time feel his emotions as he went on the run for his life. It was written a bit differently than the first two and I'm very happy with the end result. So far everyone has been very kind with their reviews and I think I accomplished what I set out to do with this one... tell an exciting story and draw the reader in and make them feel as if they are on the run with Dwight.
Lots of people have said that this is my best work yet and I agree. If you like a suspense thriller with many twists and turns that you'll never see coming, along with an unpredictable ending, this is for you. I'm glad those who have read it enjoyed it and I hope those who haven't yet read it, enjoy it as much as the other already have.
Twelve men sat around a long rectangular table talking about business, smoking cigarettes, and cigars. The room was loud and filled with smoke. The meeting took place in an old factory in Cuba that had been purchased and turned into the unofficial world headquarters of Rodriguez Enterprises, one of the largest drug cartels in the entire world. The building was made of stone and brick, and even though Rosa Rodriguez had put millions of dollars into renovating it, the building still had an old revolutionary-era feel to it.
Rosa slowly walked around the table and listened as the men talked. She had recently taken over the family business after the death of her father, Rico. There were a lot of men who were loyal to her father and doubted Rosa’s ability to lead the business into the future. These guys had no problem sharing that opinion, and even with her in the room, they spoke freely and felt safe while doing it. Rosa was an extremely striking woman who stood five-feet-nine-inches tall and weighed around one hundred and twenty-five pounds. The thirty-five-year-old Cuban had thick, long brown hair that reached the bottom of her back. All women were instantly jealous because of her nearly flawless body and the beauty she possessed. Her major vice was clothing and she never wore anything that was cheap or tacky. She paid a lot of attention to her appearance and invested a huge amount of money for her top of the line name brand look.
As she slowly walked around the table, her high heels clicked onto the concrete floor sending an echo off the stone walls. She didn’t speak a word out loud, but she carefully listened to everything that each man was saying. She could see that there was a problem brewing within the ranks and something needed to be done quickly to get things under control.
She walked to the head of the table and yelled, “Silence!”
Immediately the room fell quiet and all eyes moved to her. She continued, “Now that I have your attention gentlemen, I feel the time has come to address a few items of business. My father’s death has left this organization a bit unorganized. This is no fault of his, however, the blame falls directly on all of you. We have gathered here with us today the top twelve men in this organization . . . all of you. My father made it very clear to each and every one of you before he passed that I would be the one in charge and would take over the business. Yet some of you have the audacity to sit here in this room and doubt my authority and ability, even with me standing right here in front of you. Would any of you have the balls to do that to my father? Wait, let me answer for you. No, you would not. I will not stand for it either. I am going to lead this family into the future, and I will do it with today’s upgraded technology that my father refused to embrace. We will be more efficient, more productive, and we will see profits higher than we ever have before. This is not a suggestion as to what we might do. This is how it will be. You can follow along with my leadership or you can walk away. The choice is yours. Before you make your decision though, I want to have a word with Pablo, Diego, and Alejandro. Would the three of you be kind enough to join me at the front window over there?”
Rosa walked over to the window and the three men followed her. They peered through the window that overlooked the heavily guarded dusty compound. She stood behind them and instructed them to look out at all the men who were guarding the walls and gates of the fortress-like facility.
“Take a good look at that, would you please, gentlemen? Do you see that? There are almost two hundred men guarding the borders to this facility with their life. They would gladly die to protect what we have here. There isn’t a single one of them who would badmouth the head of the organization. They would never even think twice of committing such an unforgivable act of treason. I’m sorry that you don’t believe I have the ability to lead this organization, and I’m sorry that you don’t think my new practices will be effective. It’s time for me to show everyone in this room what kind of leader I will be.”
With that, Rosa quickly reached to the small of her back and pulled out a pistol from her waistband and rapidly fired three shots. Bang! Bang! Bang! One bullet went into the back of the head of each man standing in front of her.
The men fell dead, right at her feet, and Rosa didn’t flinch or move an inch, even as the blood pooled around her nine-hundred-dollar Christian Louboutin black and red heels. She turned back to the table of nine men and glared at them.
“Is there anything that anyone would like to say? Now is the time to make your decision gentlemen. You are either with me or you are against me. Make no mistake; I will not tolerate insubordination or subpar work from any of you. You will show me the same respect that you showed my father, or you will no longer be a part of this organization, and the only way out has just been shown to you. The choice is yours. Again, I ask you, is there anything that anyone would like to say?”
All the men just hung their heads as they looked down at the table and quietly mumbled, but nothing could be understood. Rosa had made her point and was now fully in control of Rodriguez Enterprises.
I love read this book. The triller adventure Dwight goes will definitely keep you suck in. The end was great. If you love trillers adventure and revenge you would love this book.
What can I say? This is the third book by Scott Stevens and he just keeps getting better. A couple have a booth at an art fair. A well paying customer ask to leave a package behind for his brother to pick up in a short while. This is not an unusual request so they agree. Unfortunately for them they allow the package to be picked up by the wrong person and great danger ensues. So many unexpected twist and turns. I must warn you this book is almost impossible to put down. I read it at one sitting, staying up till 2AM because of this. It really is a must read!
It's a good thing I had the day off! Once I started reading "On The Run", I couldn't put it down...lots of cool twists and turns. I love stories about ordinary people who get involved in something sinister by accident and then have to find their way out of it. Highly recommend this book and plan to read his other 2 right away..
This is the first book I read from this author and let me tell you that I loved it! Such a good book with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. The ending of this book.. come on! I just didn´t expect it! Can´t wait to read other books from this great writer! Amazing job! a must-read! A fantastic book that has it all! I happily endorse this story to any and all who are looking for a thriller enjoyable read and a completely different experience than anyone could imagine on their own. Great book!
Author Dwight Cobb is attending an arts fair with his wife, Colleen, who is set up to sell the works of art she has created. A man enters the tent and admires her most expensive piece. He tells Colleen that he would like to buy it, but he has a gift he bought for his brother, Hector. If he can leave the package with them, he will buy the artwork and Hector can pick up his gift in a few minutes.
A few minutes later, a man enters the tent and says "Hi, I'm Hector. Did my brother leave something for me?" Colleen knows something is wrong because the man calling himself Hector is her lover, Tom. However, Tom is given the package and he leaves. Then he sends Colleen a text asking her to meet him.
When they meet, Tom convinces Colleen to run away with him to Mexico where they will live on the proceeds of the four pounds of cocaine he has just stolen. Meanwhile, the real Hector comes to pick up the package only to learn it was given to someone else. Dwight Cobb is now on the run from the largest and most dangerous drug cartel in the world.
I know some people enjoy rough and naive stories that are not exactly close to reality, and this is such a book. The plot is naive, the dialogue is unnatural and the characters are strange. But one thing is excellent: There are several points of suspense all through the story, if only they were believable.
I really enjoyed reading this book, there was suspense and excitement. What I didn't like was the way a quiet writer became a mass murderer overnight. The twists and turns are implausible. The narrative between characters is naive and banal. It is totally unbelievable that a big drugs baron would be taken in by Dwight having met this quiet and unassuming man once, even if he does have their drugs. A bit of an amateurish book in my opinion hence the rating but enjoyable nonetheless and Iwould definately read more of Scott's books!

Wow! This is the first book I’ve read by Scott Stevens and I wasn’t disappointed. While this isn’t my usual goto genre, I’m more into YA/dystopian/ psychological thrillers, this book kept my attention. I liked the short chapters which held my interest and left me wanting just one more chapter. While some of the things that happened were a stretch to me, suspension of disbelief was achieved. If you like crime novels you should check this one out!
