A Fold to Extinction

Rate this book
We assume extinction level events are cataclysmic events, but what if they were microscopic, like our history teaches us?

To the rest of the world, a random tsunami is but one disaster among other events to speculate over. Unbeknownst to most of the world, the disaster is but a single ripple caused by a clandestine experiment in the South Pacific. For one newly arranged rescue team, their mission to rescue researchers will lead them to confront terrors mankind was never intended to meet, and unravel an enigma that may be the extinction of life as humanity knows it.

This book is one hell of a thrill ride! I was on the edge of my seat from the very beginning, and the author deftly unfolds the story at a steady pace with each turn adding to the panic and intrigue.

A group of military operatives finds themselves sent to an island where they have to carry out a rescue mission, but they soon find out the dangers lurking within and the how the odds have been stacked against them. What follows is a gripping tale of survival with quite a few gnarly kills. I really appreciated the level of detail throughout as well.

It's heavy on Jurassic Park vibes, and these dinosaurs are hungry. A thrilling adventure tale with just the right amount of sci-fi and horror - I highly recommend!

A Fold to Extinction grabbed my attention immediately. Fitzgerald begins this tale with a doctor working on an island, tending to the locals mostly mundanely: stomach aches and minor injuries. But when a young boy is brought in, the doctor is in for a case he had never experienced before and likely never would again. The situation is tense. Besides the language barrier, the child has endured a bite that the doctor cannot quite place the source of. The creature that bit him seems to be part bird but also contains reptilian features. It appears almost…prehistoric.

When a group of military operatives gears up to move in on the island, an array of characters is introduced. From different branches, each man specializes in different areas of expertise and has been specifically selected for this scenario that must be handled with delicacy. Each man also carries a unique personality that plays out expertly throughout the tale.

The information given regarding the operation is authentic yet accessible. Though the author is prior military, he is able to craft a story that is easy to understand by all readers. I never felt lost by the terms being used. In fact, the descriptions helped set the scene and paint a vivid picture.

When the group of special forces arrives on the island, the danger is understood nearly right away. The island is rife with creatures unseen before. The men’s mission is to rescue whoever remains on the island and get them to safety. Sounds easy enough. Except what ensues is far from what they could have ever imagined.

This story gives off a Jurassic Park vibe if the dinosaurs were part reptile and part abomination. Some of the lifeforms described seem fairly docile, even cute. Others are horrific and deadly. Fitzgerald provides many graphic scenes of gory destruction caused by these otherworldly beasts.

As the operators worked with the researchers of the island to abort the phenomenon causing the creatures, I was on the edge of my seat. The time seemed to be ticking too fast as they raced to restore power and shut down the machine used to bring monsters to our world. Every time I was sure the group would succeed, an obstacle pushed them back several steps.

In A Fold to Extinction, the tension is high, the stakes are higher. The horror is unthinkable. The writing is crisp, and the descriptions are terrifying in all the best ways. Fitzgerald does not just bring us a horror tale. He delivers a myriad of possibilities and what-ifs that leave unsettling feelings. The best horror stories involve situations that are so well-explained that they become plausible. A Fold to Extinction is one of those books.

A Fold to Extinction offers a fascinating take on an in-depth, militarized response to a revelation like discovering ancient life on our own world. Given the author's military background, it offers some fascinating insight into how the armed forces operate while trying to stay people.

Shaun Fitzgerald’s “A Fold to Extinction” is a fast-paced science fiction thriller destined to become this year’s next best seller. Imagine Seal Team Six meets Jurassic Park in a race to stop a deranged scientist, prevent a nuclear meltdown and save humanity from an alien pandemic. The story begins in the aftermath of a tsunami with a young farm boy seeking medical attention after being brutally attacked by an animal resembling a lizard with feathers. Soon after the medical airlift arrives, the boy succumbs to his injuries, and government officials take over the scene confiscating all evidence of the day’s events. From here, we fast forward to a small island in the Pacific Ocean where questionable science experiments have gotten out of control. A team of government-funded scientists pushed the limits of time and space too far, creating a fold that intertwines another planet with the small island’s ecosystem. This fold has brought several deadly creatures to the island along with an array of never-seen vegetation and possible pathogens. It is up to a military special forces group to navigate the island’s dangers, rescue the remaining researchers, prevent a nuclear meltdown, and stop a rogue seal and mad scientist before more cataclysmic events occur.

“A Fold to Extinction” had me invested from page one to the very last. Shaun Fitzgerald writes life into realistic characters with his impressive use of military terms and know-how. The scientific aspect of the story is broken down into simple terms, allowing the story to flow easily for the reader. The monsters are cunning, vicious killers that ruthlessly pursue the island inhabitants non-stop, resulting in heart-pounding scenes the reader will have nightmares over if they dare to sleep before finishing the book. I more than once visualized the character’s fear as they navigated maze-like hallways in a cat-and-mouse game. The monsters often seemed to play with their victims, taunting them before an inevitable gruesome attack. Just when I thought Fitzgerald could not make a scene scarier, he added a thunderstorm on a pitch-black night with expertly camouflaged giants ready to shred their victims into pieces. The battle scenes are described vividly to leave the reader breathless and on the edge of their seats. At times I found myself rooting for the military team’s success yet hoping for the monsters to give them hell. “A Fold to Extinction” is an incredibly action-packed story that will have the reader adding Shaun Fitzgerald to their favorite author list, eagerly awaiting his next novel.

I love, love, love! This book. I don’t want to be one of those fans that demand more after a day of a new release but I do hope there is a sequel or the universe will be expanded upon. The authors blog does contain additional great shorts that was leading up to this release, I recommend reading that too!

I’ve been a big fan of sci-fi/horror genre all my life. I felt like this story was made for me. It’s extremely well written, flow is seamless. I’m a visual person, it is easy to visualize what’s going on which is important for me. You are going to hate and love certain characters. Without including spoilers, there are parts that are extremely sad, gory and scary, suspense leading up to action. I found myself cursing out at certain points and mumbling to myself at this one person and their despicable actions (read the book and you’ll know who it is!). There is no slow part, if things get quiet that is a bad sign something bad is going to happen which just leads to feeling of dread. I found myself captivated the entire read through. I like to invest in content that I can enjoy several times after the first go through, and this book I can read and enjoy multiple time. I’m excited for the colder side of fall read through. I highly recommend this book. You cannot go wrong with this author.

The author skillfully combines elements of mystery, science fiction, and adventure to create a compelling plot. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own unique qualities and motivations.
One of the book's strengths is its ability to make you ponder the consequences of clandestine experiments and the unpredictable nature of the world. The story emphasizes the fragility of humanity's existence and the potential for disaster lurking beneath the surface.

Reads like a mix of Crichton, King, and Koontz. A solid story that is both compelling and frightening, this book is worth your time. A few typos in my copy, but they did not interrupt the flow, and things like this are to be expected in an author’s first book. I was pulled in from page one, and the characters felt very grounded. While a work of fiction, their motivations, behavior, and interactions felt very realistic and believable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would enthusiastically recommend it. I’m very much looking forward to Mr. Fitzgerald’s next book! 4/5.

Action packed and nerdy as hell. S. S. Fitzgerald gives us a dense read that mixes realistic action and intense science fiction. The plot is filled with military realism without overwhelming non military readers. I'm a huge nerd so his deep explanation of the conflict is highly appreciated and eerily plausible. The prose is neat and polished too. My one critique is the second usage of "in medie res" other than that, it’s great. Imagine a mix of Jurassic Park and Aliens (the 1986 film) that’s this book.

I read his second book first and picked this one up. I think 4 stars hits it well because he clearly had a cool story and told it well. I can see how the author improved between this and his second book.

It's really a love letter to Dino Crisis. I played that as a teen and immediately felt like he was a fan too. I can see some Jurassic Park influence, and he has a few homages to the book in little references.

It's a fun sci-fi horror/thriller.

A fun read that reminds you of Jurassic Park but with a twist mixed with squad based military action. When scientists fold over time they bring creatures back to the small island research center, and now the military is called in. Though things go wrong immediately and the creatures are not friendly. Plus there are traitors in their midst that are looking for big paydays.

Highly recommended, moves at a fast clip. Has strong characters and the dinosaurs are a fun element.

Interesting read

While not my normal genre (touching on sci-fi), this was an enjoyable read and interesting premise. More of a thriller than horror. Caught a few typos but didn’t interrupt the flow. Pace was great and found myself glued to the pages to see what happened next. Enjoy the ride…
