Whittling for Beginners Handbook: Starter Guide With Easy Projects, Step by Step Instructions and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Rate this book
"Whittling for me is more than just an art. It is like meditation and rather therapeutical. Every single time you create something, it brings you the delight and also the happiness that meets your mind and soul."

This is the reply I got from an old practitioner when I asked him how do you interpret whittling. Then I realized the core idea behind this craft. It comes with no deadline, no pre-written script, no rules, and just pure expression of your emotions through a knife and a piece of wood.

In the present times, when all the self-help gurus are talking about Digital Detox, whittling comes as a strong contender to pass on to the young and the old alike.

A Little Long on the Debate, but Solid Info and Projects

I have read the other two books that this author has put out lately on what I would call some of the lost arts, namely leathercrafting and pyromancy. So I was curious to see what he had to say about whittling, such an iconic American pastime.

I was a bit surprised, though, in the initial part of the book where the author spent a surprising amount of time with a debate over whittling versus wood carving. As this book is for beginners, I don't think the potential reader cares that much. They want to get to the info and get whittling! As with the author's other books, I thought this one did a good job discussing the types of tools and woods needed as well as other general info that you need to get started. The book has ten projects to inspire the would-be whittler. Full-color photographs throughout the book are both practical (showing tools) and inspiring (finished projects). If whittling interests you, you may very well appreciate this hands-on guide.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
