Compassionate Therapy explores the characteristics of difficult clients. Arguing that resistance and conflict can be a constructive force, Kottler shows how practitioners can use these struggles to examine their own abilities, deepen their compassion, and improve therapeutic flexibility and effectiveness.

A solid counseling book where Kottler tackles a hard topic with honesty and humility. While this was aimed mainly at those in the counseling field, the average everyday person can definitely benefit from this. I found myself challenged in the way that I deal with and have dealt with difficult people in my life. Kottler presents many examples and stories of difficult clients over the years and how he dealt with them. He also shows the wide array of theories on why certain clients are so difficult and how to deal with these extremely difficult clients. He digs into his thoughts on these theories, what has and hasn’t worked, and where he is in dealing with these hard clients today. All in all, it’s an interesting topic and one that Kottler handles well. Definitely recommend for those in the counseling profession (or Social Work, Ministry, etc.) but the everyday person will also find this valuable as well!
