Eliza's father goes away on a voyage and every so often Eliza asks her mother where her father is now? Her mother tells her stories of her father travelling on horses and elephants and ships, and Eliza wishes that would come home safely. Eventually he does.

Gorgeous collage-style illustrations. Could also appeal to older readers for this reason. Set in mid-19th century. Pattern of nice short descriptions followed by child asking her mom where her dad is through the seasons as he captains a clipper ship buying exotic items in foreign lands. Mother and daughter miss him but they stay involved in activities and so do not become distraught. Good for showing difference between units of time.

A wonderful tale that combines gorgeous artwork with beautiful phrases repeated over and over...a preschooler's dream. Faith caught on and was repeating the refrain. Becky, you should check this out. I don't know what the artwork style would be called, but it's lovely to look at.

Poetic text, absolutely beautiful illustrations that are very intricate. The story brought tears to my eyes. There seems to be a magical quality to the mother's descriptions of the father's location...
