Two grand insights from Meisner that ring true for me, engage that part of me that understands our real lives are performances, that we're the authors and actors in a script of our own making.
"Acting is the ability to live truthfully under the given imaginary circumstances."
"To be an interesting actor—hell, to be an interesting human being—you must overcome your fears of what people think. In other words, you must be authentic and for you to ever be authentic you must embrace who you really are, warts and all so the real you can show up. Do you have any idea how liberating it is to not care what people think about you? Well, that's what we're here to do because no artist will ever be truly free and blossom into their talent until they rid themselves of all outside opinions and influences."
A detailed and practical way of understanding and applying Meisner's techniques. Silverberg is a little corny at times, but his passion for the information is genuine and communicated effectively. He really understands Meisners aim and I think illuminates a lot of ideas that may be hard to extract from Meisner: On Acting....
Certainly one of the best acting books I've ever read!
Although I think the Meisner technique should be introduced or undertaken through live instruction with the opportunity to be guided by an experienced instructor and from observing classmates, Larry Silverberg’s book is an insightful and effective compliment, in particular his detailed guidance for carrying out the “activity.”
