But Did You Die? #4

Klutz: Phoenix Revenge

Rate this book
I just want a quiet life on a beach with my mates to keep me busy. Is that too much to ask? Clearly, the answer to that question is yes.

Maybe it was payback for the whole punching death in the face thing. Whatever the reason, Fate enjoyed creating chaos in my life, and then sitting back to watch the unfolding c--pfest with popcorn in hand. Ridgeforce and Midnight are coming to an end. What can I say? Burning things to the ground is sort of my thing. The only problem is that I’m not the only one who can rise from the ashes. It turns out that from the shambled remains of the two organizations that have been on mine and my mates' tails since the beginning, rises another threat.

From my blood, they created the impossible. Mates were supposed to be given to us by Fate. They weren’t intended to be created in a lab. Take down the bad guys and live happily ever that is still a thing, right?

Please note (spoilers ahead): This audiobook ends on a cliffhanger. To make up for that, there are some super spicy scenes with Ryls and her mates that you won't want to miss! There are also several fight scenes where people are unalived. There is one more audiobook in this series ( Phoenix Unleashed), and it will end with Ryls and her mates getting their happily ever after.

“Stupid universe is always clam-jamming me,” Ryls grumbled.  The guys burst into laughter behind me.  I wasn’t sure I’d heard her correctly. “Did you say clam-jamming?”  Ryls threw up her hands, then jumped when fire leaped from her hands and set a tree on fire. “Clam-jammed, beaver-dammed, muffin-muzzled, bushwhacked, box-locked…”

I DNFed this series about 40% into book 4, so this is my review of the series up to that point.

The story has an interesting premise, but there are so many plot holes that you can’t make it to the next scene without wondering what happened.

The men are paper thin and indistinguishable, and Ryls is just a strange heroine. She doesn’t curse—for no reason other than it’s supposed to be funny? She doesn’t have a clear motivation or goal, but yet get overly confident about her powers when she didn’t even know what she was in the first book. The smut was weird and because everyone was paper thin there was no tension or build up. It was a fun ride at first, but then I got very bored.

Phoenix Down ⭐️⭐️
The men are assholes.

Phoenix Heat ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The new men are dreamy.

Phoenix Secrets⭐️⭐️⭐️
All the men are protective and obsessed with her.

Phoenix Revenge ⭐️
DNF 40% BORED.

In my opinion, not worth it.

This book felt pretty explosive and I loved seeing the vengeful side of Ryls. How people are able to get one over on Ryls I’ll never know. Regardless it’s their funeral and now that she has more control of her fire and Imp, the world should be very very afraid. Not surprisingly there’s a big corporation behind all the corruption. The rich and powerful want Ryls as their pet so they can seemingly rule the world. With the way this books ends, horrible horrible cliffhanger might I add, I cannot wait to see Ryls return. I think she’s had just about enough of this mess that she needs to just go back to when everyday simply had her dying by her own hand, accidentally of course 😝 Really loving these books. Still don’t think her shadow has won me over but now with more mates, there’s so many men around I’m getting dizzy. Couldn’t be happier that I waited for this series to be finished to dive in.

The silliness was less in your face in this one, which was nice. I still maintain that this story didn't need four novels. I'm reading the last one to see how this ends.

This series started great. I love Ryls. She's funny, witty, terribly unlucky and badass. The mates all came together and things were starting to move forward.

This book was a set back to me. There are many unanswered questions regarding Ryls and Phoenixes in general, but I'm feeling like they aren't going to be answered. Many things happen with no explanation at all but because it was convenient to happen. There are rules even for magic, and this series breaks all of Sanderson's Laws of Magic lol. Whenever Ryls needs a solution: BAM, a new power. It would.have been better for her to learn the ones she already has. So far I've already forgotten most of her abilities, some she doesn't even use again so what's the point?

I know it's a fantasy book but the readers aren't stupid.

More action, fewer Ryls deaths, more imp and more mates and bonding, rounded barbed for her pleasure smex and I also wonder if she could die from too many O moments. Oh and still funny! That spider!!!

It's also more dangerous, I can't believe what they did chemically, is nothing sacred in this book world!

That ending...oh my heart! I miss too and it's only been a few pages 😔

Ok! 3.5 stars for this one.
My stars are for the storyline, action and the fact that it’s SAFE!
I’m not enthused enough to give this series my normal detailed reviews.

-FMC is really getting Annoying by this point. And I wish she had a few more serious moments and that everything wasn’t a awkward joke.
The stupid phrases she says I just couldn’t handle 4 books in anymore. It became less funny and more annoying as the series progressed.

-It felt like the authors is trying to hard to make it funny and quirky.

-To many harem members and not enough depth or time with each one. I mean throwing yet another one in at the end of this book was pushing it.

-I DID like that the boys groveled enough (this was done well) and I actually found that I liked them by the end of book 3 BUT I haven’t been able to connect with anyone in this series.

-These book are less than 200pgs and can easily be condensed into a 2-3 book series not 5.

-No bully
-No OW
-No cheating
-no OM
It’s pretty safe.

Woah!!!

Wow, that cliff is mighty! Then again, so is Ryls by the time the book is finished. I suppose it makes sense that the ending would match.

There’s all the action, explosions, Imp fun, and klutziness you could possibly hope for in this book. Plus we have Ryls making claims, plots and machinations galore, and did I mention the klutziness? You’ll die laughing at some of the ways she dies. My favorite involves a spider, but shh… I didn’t say that.

I absolutely cannot wait to read the final book in this series and see how Ryls and her men finally, finally, finally, get their HEA. They deserve it!

This story is all over the place hahaha. The antics from Imp were amazing, the amount of laughs in this series is more than I had expected and with how Ryls dies and the predicaments she gets herself in are precious and hilarious haha. The spider made me laugh so hard, I would have reacted the same way she did!!

So let me start off with some of the things I absolutely loved. I loved Ryls finally getting to bond with most of her mates. I loved seeing the different side to the guys and their beasts. The playful griffin was awesome and the special appendage and powers of and from Xerxes was amazing and shocking haha. I loved getting more scenes with her phoenix coming out more and more. More powers, more flights, shifting, etc. Great touches by the author! I will say I was close to giving this one 5 stars but a couple things kept me from doing so. I think the beginning wasnt smooth for me, I had to check a couple times to make sure I hadn’t skipped to book 5 accidentally because the end of 3 didnt transition to to book 4 well. I was confused how we got to there and it took a bit for the author to reference what went down in book 3. I also am kinda sick of her getting captured haha. Like I know she has multiple people trying to get her or hurt her, but it felt repetitive at this point. I was also kinda shocked with adding one last mate to the bunch and how all that went down. Those couple things caused me to round down to 4 but this one was definitely my favorite of the series so far ❤️

The narration was great in this one! With all the different accents, these narrators were consistent and I appreciated that. The only feedback I would have with this series in terms of the audio is when the female is the main POV and the male narration comes in, the male narration sometimes is way quieter and so I had to shift the volume a lot because when he was quiet she was loud so it got to be cumbersome. It happened in all of the audiobooks so far in this series, but it was most noticeable when I was restarting this series and starting from the beginning (and book 4 had it the most I think, or maybe book 3 in terms of the volume levels not synced). Beside that, these two did an amazing job and really have brought the characters to life. Especially when dealing with Imp hahaha (my favorite scene was when they were driving and she was cozying up to one of them and they all thought they were gonna die haha).

OH and the steam in this one was *chefs kiss*. I loved the voyeur part, so 🥵🥵🥵🥵

Did you die series by Sedona Ashe

First off this is one wild ass ride! I enjoyed every moment of it! I think Amaryllis is everything a MFC should be funny, strong and kick ass!! She has some of the most funny lines in this series! She runs into way to many obstacles and keeps getting back up. When I found out how many mates this woman has I about fainted. It's like they never stopped coming. I am going say the first book Klutz Phoenix down had me mad at her first five mates. These dudes deserved a quick kick to their baby makers over and over! They treated her like crap and it had me heated. Yes they make up for it but let's be honest the groveling Ryls made them so was chef's kiss!! So I love all of her men for different readons but Xerxes is my favorite!! That Drakon is Everything! He came in swinging from the moment he enter the book! He treats her like the queen she is and I ate that up. All in all this series is action packed! It has so many men to one very clumsy and deadly ( mostly to herself) heroine. You will not get bored I can assure you that. I love this series and I can not wait for Iolani duet. I want this Queen to get her HEA!!

If I could unread this series, I would. But unfortunately I can't and there is only one more book left, so atlas I must continue on like a good soldier.

This series has the greatest lack of world building I have ever experienced. Our FMC grew up with humans, and she for some reason thought her magically ability to regenerate was special and that she must be the odd one out. YOU ARE TELLING ME. That humans saw this girl die, regenerate, probably over 1,000 times, because let's be honest this girl is more accident prone than me, and yet no one thought it was weird???? Does that mean all humans know supernaturals exist? Well I wouldn't know, because this book has NO world building. What about all these supernatural groups? I wouldn't know because nothing is ever explained. The author jumps around from scene to scene, book to book, and things make 0 sense. My brain hurts from trying to read it.

Also the fact that the author decided to give her a synthetic bond to a soldier who watched her be imprisoned for over a month, but it's okay because he fell in love with her during that time, makes me want to VOMIT.

Shifters-Supernatural/RH/7Ms

SYNOPSIS: (of 5 Book Series): The FC is a mythical and rare phoenix shifter but does not realise that is what she is until she meets the MCs. She then has to learn what that means and what her powers are. She discovers these as the series progresses. All she initially knows is that she is a klutz who dies ALOT, generally from stupid accidents, and is then reincarnated. Book 1 starts with 5MCs (jaguar shifters) being rescued from a plane crash by the FC who they are looking for (although initially they do not know that the FC is the Phoenix for whom they are searching). There’s an immediate mate link created but the MCs push back on it and seek to reject the FC as they think she is human and too weak to be their mate as they have dangerous jobs “saving the world”. The storyline arcs over the series as the 5MCs finally accept their bond and the FC accepts each of them (at different speeds) and the FC also makes two more MCs. There’s a lot of humour and jokes through the series so this is light reading and a bit slapstick in places. The general story arc is around how the FC is being hunted by various factions who either want to kill her or study her and how she escapes them to just live her own life. Ultimately there is a HEA. Each book is pretty short so whilst there are 5 books in the series it is a quick read.

The books are well written and the storyline moves along swiftly although there are some bits which feel a bit repetitive with the FC being attacked and fighting back then being attacked again and fighting back etc. I found the 7 MC to be too much. For me, personally, 3 or 4 is preferred but 5 is my max. More than that is a bit ridiculous. Having said that it still works if a bit crowded!

The books contain a lot of humour and the FC is hysterical with some laugh out loud moments. This is an enjoyable romp with some violent and dramatic moments where everything ultimately comes good. It’s not a series to take seriously but is worth giving a go for some good, light “popcorn” reading. There are some flaws in the storyline but not enough to ruin the flow. The FC is very likeable, strong and kick ass although horribly (and hysterically) accident prone. Each of the MCs is sufficiently different to create a good cross section of relationships and issues with plenty of alpha personalities to go around.

So now Ryls is super powerful, the same bad guys are still after her, they managed to beat Jackson and get to the island, everyone is still underestimating her, and yet she can't even stop a train? Like seriously, you found out the bombs were on the bridge instead of the train but the breaks are shot. You have a dragon and a phoenix but no one can stop the damn thing? Trevor is a griffon that can take out helicopters and he can't help either?

Also - we really needed to throw in a "oh your blood can be used with shifter blood and injected into humans to create an artificial mate bond". And one of them was her guard from the time she chose to spend a month being tortured to try and find information. Who she decided to keep as a mate even though she has 7 others that we still know basically nothing about.

I’ve officially gone on a binge of all this author’s books because I cannot get over how great her female characters are. And listen—I’m someone who usually avoids series like this because my anxiety-filled little heart can’t handle all the cliffhangers... but I was here for it.

Yes, there’s some bullying in the first book, but the guys definitely make up for it over the next several installments. What really shines, outside of the fantastic reverse harem, is how Ryls—our main character—comes into her own. Each book is packed with adventure, growth, and laugh-out-loud moments. I found myself cheering with every win and hanging on tight at the end of each cliffhanger.

I'm going to use this same review for all five books I binge-read because honestly, each one was such a fun, fast, and satisfying ride.

I cannot recommend this enough... although at the time I am writing this please be aware the series is incomplete (Feb23)... as I was not aware and have such a book hangover!

The main female character Amaryllis is just brilliantly written, both her inner and outer snark is the BEST. Her clumsiness reminds me painfully of myself although as she is a phoenix it goes above and beyond a few scrapes or bruises.

She is getting much better control over her powers now, and while seemingly in perpetual danger, has a much more solid crew around her with her mates, keeping her grounded and supported. Even if they do seem to still not realise she is MUCH more powerful than any or all of them combined.

book 4

Nope you can’t leave us with a cliffhanger like that.

4 amazing and incredible binge worthy reads. This series is the best than all the rest. Is funny, sexy, hot, quirky, adventurous, delicious, addicting and the list could go on it’s just sooooooo good.

I’ve had to try take my time reading book 4 as I demolished the the first 3 in less than a day with breaks so getting close to book 5 the final I wanted to savour what was left as I just know I’m gonna be on a downer when this series is over.

I’ve waited patiently for the whole series to be complete and was worth the wait for sure. But I think the way I’m feeling il be back to book 1 tomorrow as it’s a series that you can never let go of.

*Review of the series as a whole*

The storyline itself is thoughtfully devised, decidedly humorous, and carefully scripted. I laughed a whole lot and saw a lot of myself in the main female character. There are lots of laughs and also frustrating parts, but I loved how clumsy she is.

Wasn't a fan how the intimate scenes were written and I completely skipped over 90% of them. They very much took me out of the world that was being stitched around me, as it felt unnatural and forced.

Unfortunately the series ends almost on a cliff cliffhanger...as if there is going to be a whole nother book. I actually expected there to be another book and was frustrated when I discovered that there wasn't. But then the author gives you these "bonus chapters" which kind of, sort of, continue the story, but i didn't feel like the storyline was fulfilled.

These books are short but fun I’m really enjoying the ride!

She has mated with all her cats and now her dragon and just as they were relaxing on a beach the bad guys found them yet again. Apparently they used her blood to inject into human soldiers and they have fake mate bonds that let them track her to know where she is. One she remembers as being kind to her when she was in captivity and Imp decided to claim him as theirs for real. The others must die though!

After breaking free the find they need to save a train full of people that the bad guys have planted a bomb on.

Unfortunately when she was trying to fix the train tracks helicopters came out to shoot at her.

She sacrificed herself so the people in the train could live. But she made Imp leave her to watch over her men.

Seriously one of my most favorite series and I have been on pins and needles waiting for this!

LOVE Ryls. She is hilarious, strong and her need to protect her mates and do the right thing really keeps her as a top FMC for me.

I’m thrilled to see that she didn’t lose her ability to die at the post inopportune time either which only adds to the hilarity of the book.

Her solidifying her mating with certain steamy mates was a fiery read! I love how the mates in this series come together to help the good of the whole harem and how they understand how strong their mate is!

I don’t want to spoil this read so go grab it and have a laugh!

I’d call this the best book since Book 1.

“It’s the government, man. Half the time, the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing” is the perfect quote to finally explain why there are so many competing goals about Ryls. Kill her, study her, weaponize her, breed her… it was starting to make my head spin. But the “government” line made me laugh about that confusion.

Did we need another mate? No. If he was going to be introduced then I needed more details about how he fell in love with her in the first place. I stand by my book 3 review… this series needs fewer characters, not more of them.

…But Did You Proofread?

The storyline to this series has potential, but it’s hard to read without being confused. Significant details are dropped randomly and without explanation - I ready through the first 3 books twice assuming the gap in comprehension was on my end. These books are littered with mistakes. At one point, Willard was called Wilson. Gregg was referred to as Adam. Mace uses Anzac’s nickname for Rhyls. I hope the author gets some good experience and returns to this series, because the concept was fresh and intriguing - just not there with the writing or editing.
