Craven's War #4

Hold the Line: Craven's War, Book 4

Rate this book
Spanish armies collapse under the weight of a new spring offensive and only one bastion of hope remains, the last place Craven would ever want to be.

A vast French army now marches to invade Portugal. Wellington rides north to face them, but if resistance in Spain is defeated, there can be little hope of victory, and the British will be driven into the sea. One city continues to resist at the southern tip of Spain, Cadiz. Desperate times call for desperate measures and Craven is sent to the besieged city with little hope of turning the tide. He must hold the line, or all may be lost.

Hold the Line is the fourth novel in the Craven’s War series, telling the exciting adventure of one rogue’s journey through the Napoleonic Wars as he tries to stay alive and make his fortune.

OK I really wanted to like this series -- and there is a lot to like about it -- but this book just drove me over the edge. The first line in the book spoke is "are you okay?" using a term that did not appear until over 100 years after this story is set in, the USA. Then there are super secret ninjas that burst into a room and are nearly bulletproof (one is shot in the head and simply glowers at the shooter, then bowls him over. Yes it was a graze but even that knocks someone down and usually out). I just cannot stomach the historical problems and goofy bad guys.

When the story sticks to history and real world plausible events, its better but the language is painfully anachronistic and then Craven murders a fellow officer and gets away with it and I just gave up.

Its too bad, this had a ton of promise and the swordplay is great but I cannot keep up with these books.

A Rival rises to challenge Craven

More adventuring after Craven does his normal troublemaking this time around Cadiz in Spain. More guerrilla warfare against Napoleon. Paget is maturing among other lead characters. This time their fortunes have turned for the worst as the French redouble their efforts after the setbacks in the previous novels.

I have such a blast reading this series and look forward to the next.

Good writing but bad editing

The books are a fun read. A good companion series to Sheep's Rifles. The downside to the series is the consistently piss-poor proofing\final editing by the publisher. The author is being poorly served.

Great story

Enjoyed this fast moving story about the activities of an unconventional army office behind enemy lines in Spain during the Peninsula War
