Not a soldier. Not a prince. Not even a son.

A weapon…

Varojin Auris didn’t ask to be a prince. As the illegitimate child of the Helosian emperor, he was never meant for the world he grew up in, and he knows it. When his father enlists Varojin in the military two years before the service age, it’s clear he’s no longer welcome in the court. So, forced to follow the emperor’s orders, Varojin severs ties with his old life and sets off for Fort Ironwing.

Amid the ranks of junior soldiers, Varojin finds himself as unwelcome as he was at the palace—only this time, there are no rules protecting him from superiors who use far more force with him than on his peers. So when Varojin is offered the opportunity to leave basic training behind and join a highly specialized, secretive unit, he accepts.

But the relief of being flanked by those who support him is tainted by a new the responsibility to take lives when duty calls. When a crisis reveals the full extent of Varojin’s powers, he fears he has finally become his father’s son. In the midst of destruction, the weary prince finds himself faced with a fight for the rubble of his past, or rebuild his life anew.

***

Forged By Flames is the prequel to Under Darkened Skies. In it, you’ll follow Prince Varojin for the full eight years he was separated from Astrea and his family. The story begins just after his 18th birthday and ends on that fateful night at the Whiskey Dream when he runs into Astrea.

This book is a good addition to the main series Under darkened skies. And I also understand why you should read it after the first book.

I loved reading from Jin's perspective. He is such a strong character, I mean not only physical but also mentally. The things he went trough in these 8 years, are a lot. I don't think I would survive or I would be in a very bad mental state then he is.

While he had a rough start in the beginning, it's good to see that he cares so much for the friends he makes.

I really loved reading this book and getting to know more of Jin' s history. While this was a prequel with an 8 year time line, that you cannot not notice. It also had some negative sides because of that time line. The Author didn't want to make this book to long so she had a few chapters a year, but sometimes there were things I would like to have seen more developed. One of them is how Jin deals with his first kill. In further chapters it's mentioned briefly but I would have liked to see how that developed.

However I don't think the author could have set a better story on paper then she did. This book has me made even more excited for the rest of the series.

Last but not least I want to thank the author for providing me with an earc.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Jin needs all the hugs.

Forged by Flames was such a great prequel! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Jin with his team and him building his confidence over eight years, becoming the man we met in Under Darkened Skies (aka my favourite UDS character). It was also fantastic getting additional details and perspectives on the series’s plot, and getting more time with and insight on Zephyrine and Adi.

Again, Jin needs hugs. At least two a day. He also needs a break, though I think the hugs are more likely.

Can’t wait to see more of Jin and the crew in the next book!

Although it's a prequel to Under Darkened skies, it's a good idea to read UDS before Forged by flames.

I really liked how detailed this prequel was. You learn so much more about Jin on his time away from the palace, to see him grow throughout the book. It starts of with him as a young boy, and we'll see him working his way up in the army.

The author has a really nice way of writing and describing things. This makes it easy to read the book and you don't want to stop reading when you start. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Thank you author for the arc to read.

Forged by Flames is a beautiful prequel that provides emotional insights into Jin's journey. Jin goes from unwanted and cast-aside prince to a self-assured individual. But man, does H.E. put him through him some stuff to get him there. But as a read, I love a sad boi tell.

I loved getting to see this side to Jin. His story moves pretty quickly over the eight span away from the palace. But H.E. wraps so much information in this shorter story, demonstrating all of all the ways we get to the Jin we know in book 1 and book 2. I loved getting to watch him find his footing with his team, from his first moments with Zephrine to his strong friend with Adi.

Now, most of Jin's key moments come into some of the most emotionally wrought ones -- his inevitable first k*ll, the grief of losing someone close to you, and the pockets of loneliness, and the ghost of Astrea, even present in his mind. H.E.'s writing delivers gut punch after gut punch as Jin goes on this journey to get to character we know and love.

I think his story is *absolutely* necessary to the entirety of the series, so do not skip this one. Seriously, it makes the emotional gut wrench of Astrea's story in book 2 even better. Don't miss this and enjoy all of Jin's moments.

--
I also listened to the audio book, so I wanted to say I think Ethan R. Pitcher did a solid job of portraying Jin -- especially on the emotional scenes. He also need a wonder job of keeping different and unique voices for each of the characters so I could keep them straight in my head as I listened. Overall, a really good story to listen to via audiobook!

CW: violence, death, mental health issues, loss, some others

Thank you to the author for the audiobook!

Shortly after his 18th birthday, and a full two years before the accepted age of military service, Jin finds himself shipped off to war, effectively banished from court. He was supposed to break, to become malleable, to become an acceptable son for the Emperor. Instead, Jin found himself a member of an elite group of soldiers. Thriving despite his circumstances, Jin never quite forgot the girl he left behind. The girl whose heart he broke.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we love a good prequel. This book covers the entirety of the 8 years that Jin and Astraea were separated before their reunion in book 1, “Under Darkened Skies.” While “Forged by Flames” does take place prior to that, I would highly recommend reading it second to get the full impact.

I can’t call this one “fun” (because, you know, *trauma*), but it definitely was a really engaging read. I listen to a lot of my audiobooks in the car while I’m running errands, which means I tend to only get through a chapter or so between stops. This book was actually perfect for that because a significant portion of the chapter switches were also time jumps (8 years is a lot of time to cover). Even with the time skips, it never felt like I was missing information or any significant developments; it was basically the perfect book version of sticking your head in a room, seeing what’s up, and moving on to the next room.

This was also a great way to get to know Jin a little bit better. We see him in book one and he comes across as this very reserved, put together, stoic man, but he wasn’t always that way (and we know that for a fact because Astraea is highly confused by it). “Forged” gives us the chance to see him as Astraea knew him before, and to see how and why he changed. It’s a wonderful demonstration of character growth, even if a lot of that growth is rooted in trauma.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to get into and easy to stay invested in, but also worked well if I had to put it down and walk away for a bit. It does an excellent job of giving dimension to a character that otherwise might have stayed a little bit of a mystery, and I think placing it between books 1 and 2 really helps highlight just how removed Jin becomes from his former self (and why Astraea has such a hard time reconciling it with the boy she once knew).

Forged by Flames is the prequel to Under Darkened Skies by H. E. Bauman, and is the story of Prince Varojin Auris, who is one of the major characters in UDS, told from his point of view over the eight years immediately preceding the events of UDS. You definitely should read Under Darkened Skies before reading the prequel. That said, if you enjoyed Jin in book 1, you'll love Forged by Flames. Getting to see Jin's inner workings was absolutely delightful, and learning about the hardships he endured while he was away from home provided incredible insight to his character. Reading this made me want to read book 1 again just so I could fully appreciate the nuances of his character.

Forged by Flames is fast paced and jumps from major event to major event in Jin's life over the course of eight years. Covering EIGHT YEARS in a few hundred pages does mean that things move very quickly, but there were only a handful of moments where I found myself wishing we could stay for a little longer and learn more about how Jin felt in the aftermath, but Bauman does an outstanding job of tying these events in to later points in the story. Even though Jin has a miserable time in the prequel, watching him grow over the course of the book was so much fun.

In the prequel we also get to see more of the rich world Bauman has created, as well as learning more about how magic works, which I enjoyed. Forged by Flames has action, angst, and found family--what more could you ask for? It was truly a pleasure to read and I can't wait to continue Astrea and Jin's journey in the rest of the Darkened Skies series.

Hey Cozy Readers 🔥⚔️

BOOK REVIEW‼️

Forged Flames — By my beautiful friend @hebauman

Ah! Yes Prince Varojin’s Pov…..

This was a struggle yall and I mean because we had a SAD JIN SUMMER!!! 😂 @hebauman

I read book 2 of the Darkened Skies series during the summer and honestly there’s just so much to unpack here….

I think throughout the book Jin feels sorry for himself, and has a lot of resentment against what his father was doing. Feeling angry because he lost his best friend Astrea. (When all he had to do was COMMUNICATE and SEND those letters lol but that’s another story)

I loved the back story in Adi, and how he loves cooking/motorcycles. I think having Adi around as his close friend in this war really helped Jin loosen and open up, finding himself. I think Adi plays a great supporting role in Jin’s story.

I hope Emperor Auris gets what’s coming to him

Kaius is a dick, and probably always will be.

I loveeee love Zephrine, i think what she did for her entire team shows great leadership. and she was a great “motherly figure” to Jin.

In conclusion, I think his POV was needed. Jin has real potential, he’s just afraid to step into it! he’s got the drive and focus to be more than what his father ever could be. I’m so excited to continue this story and see Jin grow….

If you love…..🔥🔥🔥

So first off, I read this entire book in one sitting. I just could not put it down. I was hooked from beginning to end.

This story is all about Jin. I loved seeing Jin’s progression and character growth while being enlisted into the military. If you read H.E.’s previous novel prior - this story is just so much more impactful in my opinion.

Without being spoilery, the story is well written and gives insight to the not so finer things in life without being grotesque. I honestly felt like I was there silently encouraging Jin on throughout his journey. The story has found family vibes as well and provides the backstory on the political/military unrest that is shown in H.E’s first novel. It’s paced well and left me wanting more. I definitely recommend it. I would definitely check trigger warnings beforehand for those who’ve experienced trauma or any kinda PTSD.

I did receive an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

And if you haven’t already - read her first novel - Under Darkened Skies. It’s worth it.

4.25/5⭐️

I really liked this prequel although you should definitely read it after Under darkened skies. This book is all about one of my favorite characters, Jin, and it was so amazing seeing him grow. The book shows us the story from when he was a boy to when he joins the army. I loved reading Jin’s perspective, he is such a strong character and deserves all the love in this world. The things he went through are things that would destroy most people but he still kept going which was something to admire him for. H. E. Bauman does an amazing job at describing things and writing the story. I really did love this book the only thing I wished was for it to be a little longer both to have more of Jin and so that she could give some chapters more development. This book has made me so exited to continue this amazing series and see more of Jin and the rest of the characters in this amazing world that H. E. Bauman created.

This book made me want to read Under darkened skies all over again! It was such a nice introduction to the Under darkened skies series!

It was so interesting to see this book from Varojin perspective. It really gives you more insight to his character which I really enjoyed. Seeing him experiencing grief and trauma made me feel a lot more connected and understanding to him as a character! I absolutely can’t wait to read more about him and Astrea in book 2!

This book is also very much action packed, which makes it perfect for action lovers such as myself! The fight scenes in this book were written really well! I could picture them with ease and they kept me intertained!

Overall I would really recommend giving this book a try if you like action packed and mission based books!
This book is also perfect for fans of Avatar the last airbender seeing as the book deals with characters that can control the elements!

A page turner that gives us insights into the swoon-worthy Varojin Auris? Sign me up!

As a fantasy book, I'm not sure it's the typical sort of read, but as a prequel to Under Darkned Skies, it makes perfect sense. Seeing a bit of Jin's backstory leading up to the events at the beginning of UDS was both lovely and heartbreaking. I feel for Jin and can only imagine the weight of what he's been through.

H.E. Bauman does a fantastic job of guiding us through these years of Jin's life, and it ended exactly where I expected it would in such a satisfying way.

Forged by Flames is already adding so many new layers to this world and these characters that makes me even more eager to see how they'll develop. The next book in the series can't come soon enough.

Can I just have the rest of this series now? I'm making room on my bookshelves already.

OKAY, SO technically, this is a prequel, but hear me out. Per the author H.E. Bauman (and not that it matters, but I totally agree), read this as a 1.5.

Forged by Flames gives a ton of insight into who Jin is and why he's done the things he has. It brings his relationship with his family, especially his Sugar Honey Iced Tea (cause of the Zon this is here to stay) father.

Be prepared because there are some pretty emotional and even heartbreaking moments. My favorite quote comes from a very bittersweet interaction that fully had me in tears.

Initially, it did feel a bit odd to go from the end of Under Darkened Skies to this, but by the end, I was grateful to have read FBF right afterward.

FBF also introduces/gives background on characters you'll get to know (and love) as the series goes on. So, to me, it's essential to read before continuing onto book 2, Into Whispering Shadows.

I loved this prequel! One of my favorite characters in Under Darkened Skies was Jin and this book is his backstory. You really delve deep into what his life was like during the years he was gone. It shows his journey as he deals with death, grief, and even the loss of friendship. I loved the found family. It was a natural growth and really emphasized and gave reason for the found family trope. I also really love how the book ended where Jin appears in Under Darkened Skies. This makes me so excited for the next book in the series. I think the author does such a good job with writing and creating a story that can capture the mind of its readers.

This book is a prequel to Under Darkened Skies, following Jin’s 8 years up until he starts his father’s special project. The pacing is just right in this novella. This poor man went through so much during that span. It sheds insight on why he made the decisions he made to protect the ones he loves, and the wall of grief and pain he had built up as a result. The love he had for Az was so obvious all that time, even when they were teens. It made me truly appreciate the meaning he has to all his words in Under Darkened Skies. This man deserves his happy ending with all his father made him endure in the name of “respect”. He’s such a “deadly” cinnamon roll. I can’t wait to see where his relationship goes in Into Whispering Shadows!

I was quickly engrossed in Prince Varojin’s backstory and feel I have a much better understanding of him. It’s clear that he values his chosen family more than anything.

The pacing was quick, especially the fight scenes. I was completely immersed in the action. The scenes situated in Kalama and within Varojin’s royal family were a personal highlight. These moments resonated more deeply than anticipated, offering a unique perspective on the Auris family dynamics.

While I found myself wishing for a longer narrative, this sentiment attests to just how much I am enjoying this series so far!

In short, I highly recommend taking a detour from the main Darkened Skies books to read this prequel.

Forged by Flames is a must read installment in the UDS world. Following Jin on his time away from the palace and his best friend this book gives the reader the look inside his mind and past we were all craving. I quickly devoured this ARC read as soon as it arrived in my inbox and am avidly awaiting Under Darkened Skies book 2 to see where Jin goes on his continued adventures.

This is a novella from Jin's POV of what happened to him during the time he was separated from Astrea -- from being pushed into the military at 18 by his father to then coming back in Under Darkened Skies. I personally would NOT skip it, if you really love this series! It's essential reading to get Jin's thoughts on everything that happened while he was away, as he went through so much serving during wartime. Please don't miss out on this one! It made me fall for Jin even more and really explains so much about his powers, his character, his morals, the pain he deals with, and, most importantly, exactly how he used to feel and currently feels about Astrea <3

This was a great deep dive into Jin's past choices and current motivations. this covers from winds and left to some of his special missions his losses his challenges and gives us a better idea of who he is in Under Darkened Skies and going forward.
this would be great for anyone who doesn't want the story to end. While it does give us an idea of the challenges and trauma that he has experienced none of it is very dark or too in detail. this doesn't add that much detail that wasn't at least hinted at in the story but does add some new information.
I did speed up the narrator just a little bit.
I can't wait to read the next book!

This was a wonderful and enhancing continuation to the story that allows the reader to better understand Jin and all he has gone through. I loved getting that look into his character, both his strength and the immense amount of pain, grief, and regret he carries. While I believe this book could be read at any point during the series, reading it first might be best of all. I didn't do that - I read it after the third and before the fourth - but it made the other books even better looking back. It is not a particularly lengthy novel so it flies by quickly, but the look into Jin's life was significant and substantial all the same.

All the stars!!

Sooooo I went out of the recommended reading order. I started with Darkened Skies and read them in series but I didn't realize there was a prequel until I was done with the series. 🤷

But it was bittersweet to come back and fall in love again with Jin. I freaking loved him in the series and I feel like I got him back for a little bit.

Now excuse me as I reread Darkened Skies at 3am because I just need to see them fall in love again.

Wait a second! I found there are extras on the author's website! Hurray more Jin content! 🥰

Thank you to the author for access!

Quickly and obsessively devoured this audibook which is the prequel in the Darkened Skies series by HE Bauman.

Getting the opportunity to hear Jinn's side of the story has been super fulfilling and eye opening. I cannot wait to immediately start book 2: Into Whispering Shadows.

This world that HE Bauman has created is immersive and quite addicting. The audiobook narrator did a great job with pacing and voice. Hope we get a combo of narrators for the next one!

What a fantastic prequel! I loved Jin in Under Darkened Skies, and this novella adds so much depth to his character. My heart aches for him.

I was unsure of the structure of this story at first—how time passes so quickly—but I fell into the rhythm of the story easily, and the snapshots of Jin's training and missions effectively display how he changes over time.

I can't wait to read Bauman's future works!

Excellent Backstory

This book is the back story for the MMC, Jin, from Under Darkened Skies. It was so good. It really brought a lot of depth to his character that you didn't get see experience in Under Darkened Skies. He's a soldier that has experienced a lot of trauma but you get to read about his regret on how he ended his friendship with Az as well as how truly awful his father is.
Highly recommend reading this one prior to book 2!

Loved it! Gives much insight on Jin's personality and his experience after being banished by his father at only 18.
Many scenes were heart breaking, some were simply adorable (and I wouldve like more scenes of Jin with his nieces 🥺) and others were jaw-dropping shocking. (Cant believe the emperor's audacity 😒😑)

I loved getting to learn more about the characters in this series. There were many interesting themes and ideas, and while it got a bit repetitive, I was invested in Jin’s character development. I did find it a little tough to get through at times due to the repetitive nature.

Beautiful addition to the series

A great prequel to the stories! It made me understand Jin so much more, and gave me an understanding why in some situations he reacts a certain way. Plus, it's great to see his friendships develop in an organic way
