My poodles feature in this book. Pictures of them. Two pictures, to be exact. Page 100, and page 118.
They are there because I was approached for one of our photos to be published in "a book about poodles", and loving my dogs, I said sure. I assumed it would cover a lot of their history, genetics etc. And it does, for a few pages.
It then becomes a kind of generic template that isn't breed specific, and part of that covers training. In fact, page 100 - where my dog Aonghus is features - endorses "negative reinforcement".
This absolutely made my heart sink.
Had I known this book would cover negative reinforcement other than to completely dismiss it as cruel and unnecessary, I wouldn't have handed over the photos.
If the author ever owned poodles, they would know that poodles are extremely sensitive dogs. Very intelligent, and very sensitive. The best way to gain trust and build a great working relationship with them (and I believe every dog), is through R+ training. You don't give dogs "commands". You don't need to take their lead and force them into a "down" to teach them to lie down. I genuinely find it quite upsetting this book advocates that.
If you buy this book, and you see my dogs, please know that I didn't use the techniques in here to train them. They were trained through building a relationship based on trust and rewards. If you get a new poodle, look up an R+ trainer in your area and work with them. Ask yourself would you rather be a dance partner, or a drill sergeant, and put this book down.
Very informative and well written book for poodle owners.
Tarah Schwartz addresses a multitude of realistic situations faced by all poodle owners., no matter the age or size of the dog. I was amazed to find that she provided answers and doable remedies for many questions and behaviors I am currently dealing with.
