The plan was working perfectly until everything went to hell. A South Korean submarine penetrates North Korean territorial waters to launch a snatch-and-grab commando raid. The kidnapping is an act of vengeance; the target is a North Korean admiral, wanted for the ambush and sinking of a South Korean corvette. The abduction goes off without a hitch. But when the triumphant commandos return to the sub, they go rogue, slaughtering members of the crew in an attempt to seize the submarine. Now, the crippled sub is trapped in enemy waters, with the entire North Korean surface navy out for blood. Into this maelstrom of danger and cutthroat politics comes international arms dealer Pierre Renard, and his secret weapon --former U.S. naval officer Jake Slate. To pull off an impossible rescue under the nose of a vastly more powerful enemy, Jake will have to abandon every known tactic and every vestige of sanity. And he can't help but wonder, how much longer will his luck hold out?
Our favorite Mercenary Navy is back to action in this new thrill packed book from John Monteith. In this seventh book we have a new edition to the family that we have come to love. It is "The Goliath." This ship is unique, probably the only one of it's kind. It is a surface ship built like a cargo hauler but it has a couple of unique features. First there are the "rail guns" that can fire high velocity rounds at seven times the speed of sound and punch holes and destruction into their enemy from so far that the enemies normal weapons can't reach Goliath.
But the second feature of Goliath is that it can submerge, becoming like a submarine, although granted a very noisy and bulking submarine. But what this allows is for the Goliath to come under another submarine and bring it on board, so to speak, by moving the submarine into the cradle on the deck of the Goliath. This allows the Goliath to then transport the submarine either under water or on the surface to another destination.
Why would you need a ship to do this you ask? Well, it's simple, sometimes you need to transport a sub to another place or you might need to rescue a submarine that is stranded without propulsion.
This is the scenario that faces Jake as Renard calls him and asks him to come help with the rescue of a South Korean submarine that has become stranded in North Korean waters. To make matters worse the North Korean navy (at least 300 of it's ships) are out searching for the stranded South Korean sub.
So, the race for stealth mode, rescue and regress to a friendly naval port are the order of the day. But to do this Jake and the crew of the Specter and the Goliath must face multiple North Korean Submarines and at least 200 plus surface vessels in their struggle to find and rescue the "Kim" from North Korean waters.
The search, the battle scenarios, the planning and the new ship are all well documented by John Monteith in a very real, compelling and informative manner. You will learn more about Jake and his struggle with his demon's as well as watch his ability to think out new ways to fool the enemy and accomplish his goals.
If you have enjoyed the previous six books you will not be disappointed with this newest installment.
