Like many writers, I occasionally find myself suffering from a lack of motivation. So I like to keep a collection of books on hand that can give me the kick in the pants that I need. I've just added this book to that collection. Relentlessly chipper, it makes everything seem possible. I can see it being particularly useful for fledgling writers who are struggling to finish a first book, or who are still struggling to implement an effective writing routine. If you'd like some motivation, combined with sensible tips and a can-do attitude, this is the book for you.

My four stars reflects that I checked this book out of the Kindle library. If I’d paid 4 bucks, I might have given a lower star rating.
I am addicted to writing books—they help me keep my mojo when all I want to do is surf Facebook and Twitter. This book was fun, a fast read, and kept me motivated through some deadlines. I heard about the book when Honoree Corder was on The Author Biz podcast, and I thought her method of applying personal growth techniques to writing was worth a shot.

This book had a few things I’ll be trying out (affirmations, word count), and some cheerleading type “you must write” prose that is helpful if you need a pick me up.

I’ve been writing for a bit, but I really need help with the topics of the second two books (publishing and marketing), so I’ll probably pick those up (again through Kindle) and check them out.

Note: I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Write Like A Boss is a quick read of a book that contains helpful advice for the writer who wants to write full time. Geared toward newer authors, Write Like a Boss is also a good book for the author with some experience under their belt; I had several aha! moments while reading, even though much I read wasn't all that new.

The format is of a conversation between the two authors; maybe that helped me see some advice in a different light, giving me my moments of revelation. The tone is more casual and conversational than most writing advice books, an aspect I enjoyed for the most part. There are also exercises at the end of some of the chapters, forcing you to stop and think about what you've read and how you are going to apply it to your own writing career.

There is a bit much, for me anyway, of the "power of positive thinking" aspect. I agree it is important to have a mindset of success and not failure, but this part of the book was a bit much at times. It wasn't so much that I was turned off to the book entirely, though.

This is a book I am comfortable recommending to other authors.

Write like a boss? What does that even mean?

"Writing like a boss is about being smart."

Write Like a Boss is a short book about what it takes to be a successful writer. It's got content, but also some great tips for actually doing it—writing, publishing, and marketing. Ben Hale writes fantasy novels, while Honoree Corder writes non-fiction (including books for writers, and books on productivity). This combination works in Write Like a Boss, because they are both able to bring their own particular expertise in writing to the table.

The authors say:

The biggest hallmark of professional writers is not marketing skills or business knowledge, it is consistency ... keeping your writing commitment is about threading it into your life.

Easier said than done, which is why Write Like a Boss includes some tips to building that consistency. And doing it today, not tomorrow. They cover mindset, treating writing like a business, and learning the principles of marketing, then move into more detail on actually writing fiction and non-fiction.

Chapter Four is from Ben. He shares his ten rules of fiction, and his revision process. Each of Ben's novels currently goes through thirteen drafts (he used to have twenty-four). I found his explanation of each draft hugely helpful, and it's something I can see myself pointing editing clients towards. Hale uses four sets of outside readers—an alpha reader (for plot and characterisation), a paid editor, beta readers, and a final beta reader.

As a freelance editor, I found it interesting to see where Ben's paid editor fit in the process. His editor sees the fifth draft of the book—he goes though the full book another eight times after getting the edited version back. I suspect some of my clients think they'll be able to get my copyedit back and publish within a couple of weeks. Ben's process shows why that's not realistic. It sounds daunting, but I'm sure his process results in a much better book than if he'd skipped some of these steps.

Note that these are Ben's tips. He's a multi-published fiction author with a solid writing, revision, and editing process. He's learned the craft. What he's sharing here are tips, not a substitute for learning for ourselves (Honoree points out she invested four years in learning before she launched her writing career).

Chapter Five is from Honoree, and she shares her process on writing a non-fiction book. She shares four kinds of non-fiction writer, and four key questions that every non-fiction writer must answer for each book.

Write Like a Boss is the first in a series: Publishing Like a Boss and Marketing Like a Boss are both in the works. If they are anything like Write Like a Boss, they will be well worth reading. Recommended for pre-published writers, and those looking for ideas to improve their discipline, motivation, and productivity.

If you’ve ever struggled to create your daily writing habit…Write Like A Boss has some fabulous solutions that will take you from a hobby writer to a full-time, professional author.
In an easy and chatty style, Honoree and Ben tackle your mindset and your habits. It’s like getting a motivational pep talk over a cup of coffee…with actionable and practical advice.
These quotations sum it up for me: “I know for a fact that making a living as a writer is an inside job (you must get your mind right!)” and that you need “diligence, learning, adaption and the will to change yourself…and your perspective.”
I loved the section on developing your mindset and the deep dive into affirmations, time management, commitment, vision statements, measurable goals, action steps, and your production calendar.
It’s all about creating productive habits – it may take a few days or a few months, but keep after it. Be patient, but persistent as you work on building that daily word count.
**Write Like a Boss is an informative and insightful resource for fiction & nonfiction writers on how to turn your dream of full-time writing into the reality of a successful author.**

This book is a wonderful resource for people just starting out in the publishing world. One of the hardest things to do is shift your mindset from hobbyist to professional writer. Honoree and Ben do a great job of giving simple actionable advice to help you do that. I enjoy the balance between fiction and nonfiction advice. Most books on writing cater to either crowd but many people write both. It's handy to have all the information in one place. I'll be using Honoree's nonfiction outlining method for my own books.

The motivational aspect is really important. The section on self care is awesome. Writing isn't easy. There are times when giving up seems like a logical choice. Self doubt and impostor syndrome can take over your brain. Before you know it your will to write is gone. Write Like a Boss addresses that without giving you false hope. They put a lot of emphasis on doing the hard work in order to succeed while taking a step back to recognize that you're human.

This is a great book for new writers or anyone feeling stuck while trying to shift from hobby writer to professional published author.

I have enjoyed most of Honoree's books, mostly because I was at a point where I needed to read them... they were new information to at the time. This book, like many of the popular writing books, seems to be geared toward the fledgling, beginner or wanna-be writer. While there's a lot here for someone who wants to take things back to basics, it's mostly geared toward subjects I know up and down, backward and forward. I'm writing book #7 so advice on how to begin my writing career is a lot of repetition.

I did like the casual, conversational, back-and-forth style of co-writing in this book. There were obviously two voices playing off of one another throughout the book. That made it less of a lecture and more of a chat, which is often easier to take in.

This book is a good, short read for those who are just starting out in the business. I'll be on the lookout for Marketing Like a Boss... because even those that have been in the game for awhile need guidance and assistance on marketing.

To write like a boss you need to be a boss

This is one of those books that helps a person look in the metaphorical mirror and say 1-you can do it 2- this is how and 3-go do it. I actually followed the advice and it worked.

This book will be on my recommended reading list for anyone who is interested in making writing a career.

Excellent productivity and mindset tips for authors

I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it. The section on setting your production schedule by working backwards from your goal and factoring in vacations and disruptions was awesome! I am inspired after reading this book.

Not anything new

To be fair I'm not sure what my expectations were. I think I wanted more of the mindset, but wanted new teachings that were life changing.
So basically, if you're incredibly new to writing or researching writing this could be great. If you've read widely on these things there's nothing new here. And there are more complete books that cover these topics.

This is a quick book to read and it contains a fair amount of good advice on how to become a better and more efficient writer, produce more in terms of both quality and quantity.
The one thing that irks me is that throughout the book the co-authors repeatedly have to pat each other on the back for the interesting and clever ideas they suggest/present. Why is that necessary? That could have been part of the foreword or author's notes in the beginning of the book. Yes, the idea may well be good, that's what I expect from the book because why else would I have bought it? That aside, it is a good solid book and I hope the future volumes in this series are equally interesting if less self-congratulatory.

I loved the style, flow, and writing advice shared. This book is full of excellent information and great resources. I made lots of highlights and noted several areas to reference again. The authors did an excellent job, and I appreciate the time and effort of the collaborating team.

You will enjoy all of the tips, knowledge, and suggestions offered. Write Like a Boss is an all-around great read. Even with being a seasoned author, this book enlightened me in many ways. I highly recommend it and will be seeking out more books by both authors.
