“My hat is most certainly off to Jina Bazzar for painting such a clear and realistic world out of so many complexities. It reads smoothly, beautifully, and of course deadly. The setting is clear, and the characters are amazing.” — Goodreads Reviewer. “Danger is Roxanne’s constant companion and it’s hard to know who she can trust among these powerful and ruthless preternatural beings. Across the board, the characters are compelling, demanding, and rather scary. I’d last about 2 minutes with this bunch. Roxanne is tough! But she has a soft side too that puts the reader solidly on her team.” — Goodreads Reviewer.
“This series is a lot of fun to immerse yourself in, and if you like mysterious fantasy with a heavy dose of action and just a sprinkling of romance, this is the series for you!” — Goodreads Reviewer.
Jina S. Bazzar is a Palestinian author, born and raised in Brazil. Like most writers, her love of books began at a young age. Unlike most writers, she never aspired to become one. It was only years after she became blind that she tried her hand at writing, giving voice to all the wild, rambling thoughts in her mind. She now lives in Palestine with her family, taking inspiration from the smallest things in life. When she’s not writing or networking on social media, you can find her in the kitchen, baking while listening to (often very loud) music. Find writing updates at: linktree/jina_bazzar
Heir of Doom is the second book in Jina S. Bazzar's trilogy, The Roxanne Fosch Files, and falls in the suspenseful fantasy genre. I've previously read the first book, Heir of Ashes, and a prequel short story, The Curse, before reading this one. They are best read in order so you get the full picture of everything going on in this extraordinary world. I buddy read this one over four days with my friend, Misty, and enjoyed it very much.
Roxanne is half human. She was given up at birth due to several reasons we learned about in a previous book, but ultimately, she's been held captive for ~20 years. She escaped from someone's clutches only to be kidnapped again and tortured many times. Now, she's out on her own after the last book, and is trying to find out the truth about her past. In this book, she wants to help a missing girl who's being raised by the same woman who raised Roxanne, except this little girl is indeed the adoptive mother's child. Unfortunately, the child is afraid of someone and wants Roxanne's support. Just when Roxanne thinks she can help her, the girl goes missing, and the hunt begins. Who took her? What's the reasoning? And will Roxanne save the day?
That's only a piece of the story. Author Bazzar takes us on a journey and race to get to the bottom of the kidnapping, only along the path, Roxanne learns way more than she expected. Who should she trust? The evil guy everyone warns her about? The adoptive mother who acts weird now? The guy she had a crush on who seems to be with someone new? A few other folks coming into and out of her life at warp speed? By the end, we learn the truth about Roxanne's parents, and it's a shocker. We thought we knew the whole story, but we did not!
The first half of the book was a slow burn to catch us up on history, get to know the new characters, and set the tone for why it's so important for Roxanne to be involved in this chase. The second half was an intense ride full of deadly battles, astronomical pain and loss, and a discovery of whom you should trust. Author Bazzar really makes us fall hard for the heroine. We forgive her curt and pushy attitude. We understand why she needs to get to the truth. We love her for trying to save someone else. And we want to help her get free from the ties that bind her for what could be most of her life.
Her fighting instructor is harsh! Her friends can be loving and mean at the same time. Her enemies stop at nothing to kill her. Where will we go in the third book? I can't wait to find out. I so enjoyed this buddy read with Misty, I'm sure we'll take on the third book together again next year!
I want to thank the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I also want to thank Jay for buddy reading this with me although I was a pretty horrible buddy reader this time around because I was so busy.
I read the first book Heir of Ashes back in April and loved it so when the author reached out to me asking if I would like to read this one I of course said yes. I needed to know what was next for these characters.
Unlike with the first book it took me a while to fully get into this book. The first half kind of felt like back story or like an info dump. The last half though is what made this book for me. It was just like with the first book full of action and I was flying through it.
I will say some characters that I loved in the first book I ended up hating in this book but others took their place. Y'all know I don't like cliffhangers. It's not that there's anything wrong with them I am just impatient and want all of the answers now. The author warned me that this one ended on a cliffhanger as well because she remembered my aversion to them but I still wanted to read it. Even though I would rather have all of my questions answered by the time I finish a book I understand why authors end books on cliffhangers and I am kind of sort of not really starting to not hate them so much.
I can't wait to read book 3 I just wish I didn't have to wait so long for it. I definitely recommend y'all read these books but you should read book one before jumping into this one to get the whole story.
Heir of Doom is the second book in the trilogy The Roxanne Fosch Files writen by Jina S. Bazzar, who also kindly sent an e-book to this part of the world.
I have also read the first book which introduced who Roxanne is. She is a twenty-something year old girl who is half human and half a preternatural (some kind of supernatural creature). She was held a captive by a group of government scientists who conducted experiments on her. At the end she escaped. In the second book we learn that she has joined a clan and we learn how clan hierarchy works. In this book she has to help a girl called Mwara or face execution by clan's higherups. At the end of the book we also learn who is Roxanne's mother which was a real shocker!
The first half of the book was slow paced which, to be honest, wasn't my cup of tea. But this doesn't mean that it's bad or wrong, I guess I just wasn't in the mood for a slow paced narration. But with this slow pace the author took her time with the world building and introducing new characters. The second half of the book was much more intense and full of action. At this part I fell in love with the book. I just couldn't stop reading it. With the second book Jina also took care in creating real personalities for the characters. I could feel concern for Roxanne, annoyance with Diggy who is actually a good guy though also a douche and totally loathing Archer and Elizabeth. I felt emotions for each character like they were a real person.
It was a good read and I can not recommend it enough!
Now I can't wait for the third book because I want to know more about Roxanne's parents. I don't do well with cliffhangers :)
No No NO, you can't end it like that. I don't want to wait till 2020 for the next book...but I will because it was another amazing addition to Roxanne Fosch's tale.
Raise your hand if you enjoy supernatural creatures living in the “real world” alongside classic fae characters like Queen Titania and Oberon (yes, most widely known from Midsummer Night’s Dream), and some epic battle scenes? Oh good, that’s most of you! “Heir of Doom” is the second book in the Roxanne Fosch series, and this is one of those series where you absolutely have to read the series in order. If you haven’t done that yet, go on with your bad self then mosey on back and we’ll discuss this sequel, I’ll wait. All caught up? Excellent! In book 2, we watch Roxanne try to fit in to her new life as a Hunter, a preternatural group of predators who police others of their kind regardless of which clan they belong to. After the dramatic events of the first book, Roxanne is kind of hoping that’s earned her some good will—she did save her clan leader from horrific experiments after all—but it has the opposite effect. She’s still hated by her own people and Roxanne cannot figure out why for the life of her—still. It’s frustrating, but at least with this second book we discover more as to why Roxanne is the clan’s punching bag, and new information about why the fae want her, why Remo wants her, and why Logan is so different in this book from the previous gets clarified.
Compared to the first book, the pacing of the second does slow down quite a bit for the first half. The author brings us more into Roxanne’s world, shows us more of the creatures, and introduces us to the hierarchy Roxanne had been ignorant of her whole life. At times, it could feel a bit info dumpy and, if it’s been awhile since you read the first book, there’s not really a recap to fall back on to re-familiarize yourself. You do get a little of a recap around the 15% mark of the book, so hold on, things will make sense! It just takes a while. Plus, Roxanne is supposed to be learning, but her mentors, and her clan superiors, are all really terrible at sharing. They don’t tell Roxanne vital information, and she doesn’t ask. There is so much mystery and so much trouble that follows because the animosity these predators have against Roxanne, and her own insecurity, that they hide things, or don’t share the whole truth, and it bites them in the butt later on. That’s by design, obviously, and the author does a wonderful job evoking that frustration, but I did find myself wanting to shake pretty much every single person in Roxanne’s clan. In the first book, it made sense why Roxanne didn’t ask what the heck was going on, she was busy running for her life with a stranger. But now that she isn’t running, now that she’s part of the group, I expected her to not wait for people to come to her and explain who was who, what they are, what their role was, or why Roxanne’s powers were always a bit… strange compared to others of her kind.
Once you get to about the 40% mark in the story the action really picks up and things start getting explained, which includes why Logan is a complete 180 from where he was in the first book. Given what Roxanne learns about the group, how the power structure is organized and the rules of the clan, you understand why Logan isn’t the guy we met in the first novel, and that’s fine! My frustration was bittersweet at that point, it makes sense for the character, and that makes me ache for Roxanne in all the right ways. It makes me empathize with her, and full heartedly agree with her each time she shrugs off the hierarchy and does the smart thing, the right thing, because her clan sucks! You don’t need them, girlfriend. Plus, it opens the door for Zantry who is such an interesting character, and I love that he doesn’t hide things from Roxanne; she asks a question, and he explains EVERYTHING. AND! We get more Frizz in this book, and I love him, and want one like him for myself.
There were so many threads presented in the start of the story that felt disconnected, and I was really worried I’d be left with more unanswered questions, but most weave together wonderfully at the very end. I am curious what’s up with Vicky, but I think that’ll be answered in the third book. Part of me wishes that less time would have been spent in the training montage and more time spent with a select few characters so I could have a better sense about what forces wanted Roxanne for what purpose and to what end, and to be honest, that’s still a bit unclear. But the pieces and the players are all where they need to be, so I DO know what Roxanne needs to do for the third book. And, the cliffhanger at the end isn’t so bad if you’ve read the “The Curse” before this book, but after “Heir of Ashes”, just saying. It provides some answers about Roxanne that lessen the devastation that the cliffhanger might otherwise leave you with.
Once the story really picks up, I had a hard time putting this book down. My curiosity and frustration with the people who you THINK should protect Roxanne culminated in this strong need to read the next book, to have it now, to see how Roxanne gets out of the new trap she’s in, and cross my fingers that she and her loved ones all make it to the end of the series. In a weird way, I actually like how much I dislike Roxanne’s “people”—except Diggy, he grew on me—because it makes sense with a true predatory group, but it also blinds them to the obvious as well. This series is a lot of fun to immerse yourself in, and if you like mysterious fantasy with a heavy dose of action and just a sprinkling of romance, this is the series for you! It did take me a bit longer to really get into this story and for things to start happening, but after that it became a strong, binge-worthy 4 stars! I can’t wait to see how it ends! And thanks to the author for providing me a copy for an honest review.
I like series, where each book is a continuation from the previous, answers some questions but also has some questions pending to be answered, and do not end on a massive cliffhanger! And Jina S. Bazzar’s second book in the Roxanne Fosch Files, has all of this 🙂
First things first, trigger warnings. Similar to the first book, there is a lot, and I mean a lot of action, bloody, gory scenes in the book. If that is not your scene, probably best to reconsider. There is also the continued theme of abandonment and the longing to belong somewhere, belong to a family, in the second book – not just from Roxanne, but from other characters too. Again, if that is something that is a difficult subject for you, better take a second opinion, or get into the book with something stronger than coffee 😉 Cheers!
I don’t want to give out any spoilers, but you do have to read the first book in order to fully appreciate and even follow what’s going on in the second book. Although, the challenges in the second book are slightly different, the friends and foes are common and there are quite a few references to the previous book.
I enjoyed reading the second book as much as I had enjoyed reading the first book, and finished it in a span of 3 days, stealing time from all my breaks and sleep time too- it was that entertaining and fast paced! So, here are some of my continued thoughts on the second book of the series, now that I’ve read a few more YA fantasy books (if not series..lol) and understand some of the concepts people talk about while reviewing a YA novel 🙂
•World building: I thought that because there were so many different characters and clans coming from different planets across the Universe, in this series, if Jina attempted to build a detailed World like the Lord of the Rings, we’d probably have a book for each clan..just saying! And I would’ve lost patience. Lol. So, I liked the fact that she has described, just to the right amount of detail for someone like me, the different worlds of some of the clans – the Sidhe Land, the Tristan Star, The Lowlands
•Genealogy: Oh my gosh, I was so confused with all the Genealogy mentioned, that I actually had to get a notebook and start drawing the family chart in there! So many terms and back stories for each character, that if I hadn’t started drawing them, I would’ve completely lost the plot! I’m just amazed at the level of thought the author must have given while writing this and how she created all the terms and the clans or the family tree or the history of each character. But this is the most important part or theme of the book in my mind. The history is very important to understand how the story for our lead character Roxanne will progress
•Action and twists: Lots and lots of action. Punches, kicks, gashes, healing, getting punched again, combat training, action with magic, lots of stuff to keep someone like me hooked. I haven’t read a YA fantasy book with action like this yet, the ones I have started or finished have a lot of magic sort of action, but I haven’t read the Throne of Glass series, so I’m guessing I will find something similar in those books? Now twists, I have heard a lot of reviews on how there are books that shock with their twists, or deaths of pivotal characters, I didn’t think this book intends to do that for its readers. There are some major twists, but nothing that will terribly shock the reader or send him/her reeling, saying, what! what?! Good for the readers of feeble heart I guess..hehe
•Romance: So, I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit of a sucker for the concept of ‘falling in love or noticing the one you might end up with slowly’. I don’t want to give away spoilers again, but looks like we might have a new addition to Roxanne’s romantic interest in the second book, and I’m not complaining for one about that, because I thought the interaction between the two was just the way I like it – slow, friendly, caring, funny at times and with literally some electric current 😉
•Character Arcs and Supporting characters: Frizz is back!!! And I was so happy to see him playing such a major role in the second book! Where can I get a ‘familiar’ like him now? Also, some new characters are introduced, while some old characters are put on the back foot. I wasn’t sure if I was too happy about Logan becoming a bit of a back foot character in the second book, especially since he had a major role in the first book 🙂 I was completely with Roxanne in this book. She is still vulnerable but starts to learn to trust and bring people into her inner circle. She starts to open up but is also badly hurt, both physically and emotionally by members of the clan who took her in. There were many times in the book when I could literally feel her emotional pain, her outrage at being alone or her sorrow of not having a family who really cared for her. I almost cried for her in some of the last scenes, I’m with you girl.
I am hooked and really looking forward to the next book. I’m not sure if this is going to be a trilogy (maybe a question for the author), or a longer running series – but either way, looking forward to what happens next 🙂
Wow. I am excited that this book was written like this. I was not disappointed by the twist or the changes. It kept the story interesting and progressing. Roxanne is an amazing character and I really enjoy reading about her.
Heir of Doom (2019) by Jina S. Bazzar is the second book in the Roxanne Fosch Files series.
This series definitely needs to be read in order so that the reader knows what is happening. There is a lot of main character Roxanne’s backstory and history in book one of the series and the prequel. This would help readers know what is happening in a lot of book two.
In this book, Roxanne meets with a young child who is ten called Mwara. Mwara is the daughter of Elizabeth, the woman who Roxanne thought was her mother. Mwara has come for help as she is scared that she is not Elizabeth’s daughter and feela like the PSS is out to hurt her. Soon after the child goes missing. Roxanne begins to search for Mwara and along the way learns more about her past and her family. At one point, Roxanne is even accused of kidnapping Mwara.
I absolutely love Roxanne. She is a very real character who has a lot of emotion and compassion for people. She is brave and tries to help them. She has a heart of gold really. Her instructor Diggy on the other hand I didn’t take to. I will give him that some of the things he taught her came in useful but he was cruel and cold. I was very fond of Zantry though and I like the way the author wrote that everyone’s opinions of Zantry were negative but he ended up being alright. I also love that Roxanne is a woman with her own mind who pays their opinions no heed and makes up her own mind about him.
There was a conversation in this book between Roxanne and her friend Vicky about whether Frizz, Roxanne’s familiar is male or female and if I’m reading the conversation correctly, I think the idea was that how your body is shaped in terms of your genitals and chest area doesn’t have any bearing on your gender. I loved that. I thought that was cool. Frizz is male but the idea was that it wasn’t based on how his body parts were shaped so that was great.
The book has great backstory combined with much action. The settings all really work and each character adds something to the plot. The tension is great. This book has a mystery element to it which is really cool. The ending is also great. I loved that the author didn’t go for an obvious ending.
Logan appears a bit in this outing but not too much. His and Roxanne’s relationship doesn’t really go any further in this book. In fact it takes a step backwards. So we’ll have to wait and see what happens with them in the final book of this trilogy. We also get to know Roxanne’s friend from childhood Vicky in it. She is dying for Roxanne to get a man. In other news, she is worried Roxanne is not enjoying herself enough. They have a close bond and they look out for each other. Her familiar Frizz is a dote too.
This book is a long read but it’s a brilliant read. I’m looking forward to the final book in the series to see how everything works out for Roxanne and the gang.
As you can already say, I loved this book. It was even better from book 1. My reasons :
– The Pacing.
Though the first half was kinda slow as we had to know the new characters and the history. It was kind of the building point to let us know why Roxanne got involve with all of these. It never got to the point of boring though, it kept on slowly building up until to the point it gained all the momentum and started to roll and proceeded to crush our heart on its way out! The last half was intense! It had several deadly battles, heartbreak, loss and betrayal. And the cliff hanger! OHMYGOOOD THECLIFFHANGER!!giphy
– Amazing Characters
I love Roxanne. She has grown even more strong and oh my god she is everything I want in my female roles! I love her despite the fact that she pushes people out, what else she would have done? There are people whom she DID let in and they betrayed her. No wonder Roxanne has this much trust issues! People are so spineless these days -_-
And GOD!! I hate Archer! Pathetic excuse of a man!! 😡
– Plot Twists
The plot twists! OMG!! Jina did it again! Only more fiercely! I was blown away by the twists. Only the one about Roxanne’s parents was the one I had a mere guess about. But the rest?!! OMG *_*
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! I would give all the stars I have and I can not wait anymore for the next book!!!! Please!!!!!!
5/5 Stars!
*Thank you THE book ROBIN HOODS for creating such an amazing platform where we could connect with so many writers and get books in exchange of our honest thoughts*
Jina Bazzar has done it again! Heir of Doom blew me away, and as much as I loved Heir of Ashes, this new installment of Roxanne’s journey has made it to my favorite reads of 2019!
This story picks up right after Heir of Ashes, and continues the same action-packed writing Jina Bazzar is now known for. The magic, the relationships, the plot twists! When you read this one, prepare yourself for an all nighter, because you’re not going to want to put it down.
This is one of those instances where I could go on and on about this novel, but I’m taking up your reading time. Go grab this book and let it prove to you just how fantastic it really is!
*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.*
Book 2 of the Roxanne Fosch Files explained more about the fee clans and the history that involves Roxanne, who I liked a lot more in this novel because she was more humanised and easier to connect with.
I know that there is more to this series and I cannot wait to find out where her journey will take her next! I hope that the series continues to improve and amaze me.
Roxanne is one tough lady. She kept on going against her trainer. The more she said no, the more he said yes. The more she fought back, the more he fought her. I kept hoping that eventually, she would catch on to what he was doing, but it sure took her a while. I began to think she might not make it out alive.
Roxanne is safe for the moment but she might not be shortly. Roxanne has some pretty hard choices to make. The choice she makes could cost her a lot.
Roxanne has been given the task of finding a little girl and is also looking for her mother. The missing little girl and her mother could be connected in some way, but the question is how.
Heir of Doom was slow to start with introducing us to all the characters and who they are. But it didn’t take long for things to speed up once the fighting began and there were plenty of fights to keep those pages turning.
Heir of Doom was filled with many secrets that were released slowly causing me to want to read faster as I wanted to know what was on the next page and the next until it had me racing to the end.
I recommend that the reader pick up a copy of Heir of Doom today! Oh, wait I would suggest reading the first book in The Roxanne Fosch Files, Heir of Ashes before reading Heir of Doom. The Roxanne Fosch Files should be read in order. I know you don’t want to miss a thing from this wonderful world of shifters and other paranormal creatures living in the same world. This is one of my favorite parts about The Roxanne Fosch Files.
I wished someone would be on the heroines side. She is a true hero trapped because everyone wants to use her. Hopefully they n the next book someone will actually try to help her instead
The second book in The Roxanne Fosch Files, Heir of Doom is as action-packed and immersive as Heir of Ashes. Roxanne, now contracted to the Hunters, is free of the PSS and is no longer hunted. Grueling training fills her days until her past comes back to haunt her. When a girl goes missing, Roxanne becomes a suspect and must work with new allies to prove her innocence and find the girl. With her life on the line and danger lurking everywhere, Roxanne must learn who to trust and find the girl before it’s too late.
Roxanne’s character continues to fascinate me. She deals with so much and continues to learn about herself throughout the novel. She still struggles to figure out people’s feelings and motivations, probably because of the decade she spent imprisoned. Spending defining teenage years as the victim of scientific experimentation has hindered her development and ability to understand herself and others. It doesn’t help that she is continually rejected and looked down on. However, she slowly begins to trust her intuition when it comes to the new people she encounters.
I love the introduction of several new characters in this book! Diggy, Zantry, Vicky, and Roxanne’s familiar Frizz each help Roxanne understand the nuances of relationships, from tough mentor to possible love interest to friend. I’m curious to see how these relationships develop. Though we don’t see Logan much in this story, I have a feeling he will have a larger role in subsequent books.
Like the first book, this story is filled with plot twists, action, and suspense. You never know who Roxanne should trust or what kind of danger she might encounter. New worlds and new (and old) enemies connect to Roxanne’s past, and learning more about her back-story and the history of the supernatural world is intriguing.
The action scenes are amazing, the characters are distinct and dynamic, the supernatural and sci-fi components are vivid and fascinating, and the story is complex and well-layered. Plus, the ending is jaw-dropping! I need the next book in the series ASAP! Thanks so much to the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Roxy Fosch has finally freed herself from the clutches of the PSS, but her troubles are far from over. She’s signed up for a ten-year stint with the New York City Hunters, a sort of paranormal police force meant to keep the secret shifters, vampires, weres, etc. in line. The training is brutal, and Roxy is a half-breed. Many hate her for that reason alone.
Then she receives a visit from Mwara Longlan, the daughter of the woman that Roxy grew up thinking of as her mother. Mwara says she’s afraid that she’s not Elizabeth’s daughter, either. Now that Mwara’s facing puberty, she thinks she could be destined to a future as a test subject, similar to the one that Roxy endured.
That’s a story that Roxy can’t ignore, although she’s learned caution in a hard school. Elizabeth fed her nothing but lies and didn’t lift a hand to stop Roxy from being locked away. Nothing from that family can be taken at face value. On top of that, her trainers at work don’t respect her personal space any more than they respect her—they’re in and out of her apartment at all hours. There’s no way she can keep Mwara a secret.
But she does promise Mwara that if she’s taken, Roxy will claim her as part of her clan. She should have done more. Now Mwara’s disappeared, and Elizabeth has blamed Roxy. If Roxy can’t prove her innocence, losing her job will be the least of her problems…
Roxanne is back at it again trying to make it by in a world that seems to want nothing to do with her. She has joined the hunters, a kind of police of the preternatural's, hoping that would help her problems. Even though she now belongs to a clan and a respectful organization, everybody still seems to hate her, a half-human. Nothing is at it seems and when Roxanne is blamed again for things that have nothing to do with her, it's up to her and a new friend to clear her name. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Roxanne has no choice but to join the opposite side, how will she be able to get herself out of this one? Enjoyed this one even more than the first one. That mostly had to do with not enjoying one of the main characters, Logan, in the first book. I loved learning more about Roxanne and what she is! I also loved learning more about the world the preternatural's live in and all the rules and regulations there still are. Roxanne is still strong and rightfully angry, she is trying to figure out her place in a world where no one seems to want her. I cannot wait to see what Bazzar brings to the final book in the series!
While not the usual type of book I read, I enjoyed it.
It was a real page turner with lots of twists and turns. In some places a little too 'heavy' for me, maybe because it is really packed with action, fights and movements (am I too old for that? aaaaa, I hope not). The action scenes are intense and well described, leaving the reader to feel as if they are standing to one side watching it all happen... Be prepared to read deep into the night just to finish "one more chapter before turning out the light and sleeping".
Such an excellent continuation to Roxanne's story! I'm in love with Jina's writing style it's so fresh and original. Roxanne Fosch is a force to be reckoned with. She's fierce, compassionate, powerful and down to earth... as down to earth as a preternatural can be, that is. This is the second full installment of the Roxanne Fosch Files trilogy, (plus a half in prequel style, Cursed). Read them all in order, you'll get so much more out of it. The first probably quarter of Heir of Doom does an excellent job of catching you up on the story, so if you don't have the time for all three, it isn't confusing. Which really says a lot because the world you're thrown into is intense and it has so much dynamics. My hat is most certainly off to Jina Bazzar for painting such a clear and realistic world out of so many complexities. It reads smooth, beautifully, and of course deadly. The setting is clear, and the characters are amazing. I felt like I was plucked from reality and placed precisely into a very real world of vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, soooo much more! Heir of Doom could be read as a stand alone, and one could still enjoy the read immensely! But as I mentioned, the benefits are more satisfying if the series is read in its entirety. I can't wait for the final installment! In Heir of Doom, Roxanne if faced with a whirlwind of danger, and it seems the entire world is against her. She doesn't trust anyone, and rightfully so, as those who have been closest to her have betrayed her. She's been spied on, hunted, experimented on, and forced to come into the development and mastering of her powers basically on her own, be it one way or another. Roxanne has one of the most unique and original stories I've read. And, the ending of this book is jaw dropping! I was left gasping and wanting more. I don't want to have to wait for book three, I really hope it's out sooner than later! As a reader of mostly thrillers and slashers, I'm very picky about my choices in fantasy. So far this trilogy has captivated and kept me on the edge of my seat. I'm hooked! Hands down five stars!
This book had me stay up way too late and neglect the research project that I should have dealt with... I've already loved the first one and the prequel and this sequel didn't disappoint in any way. On the contrary, I was hooked up on it and almost jumped right out of the reading slump that has been haunting me ever since the year started. I don't even know where to start. I admit I had to reread the last chapter of Heir of Ashes to remember what had happened, but that was okay. The story pretty much picks up where the last book left off. Having read The Curse as well, I sometimes had a sense of foreshadowing since I knew a bit more than Roxanne and the other characters. Interestingly enough I wasn't sure if I remembered correctly and this made the reading experience even better. A certain air of doom overshadowing it, since there had to happen something at some point and Roxanne would reach the point where I was knowledge wise sometime too. This is a story full of magic, developing relationships, new characters, plot twists that make you gasp for air and a pace that feels like a roller coaster. But one of those where you wouldn' bet on making it out alive. I lost count on how many times I was close to a heart attack. I still cannot really put into words how fantastic and fun this book was to me and how fond I have grown of this story and universe. I despise the fact that I probably have to wait an entire year for the next part :( It's just one of those stories that you don't want to end. I might just read it all over again while waiting for the continuation of this masterpiece. Highly recommended to anyone!
Roxanne thought she was free. Yes, she was contracted to the Hunters but she could live her life without looking over her shoulder, without worrying she would be dragged back to the PSS to endure more of their brutal experiments. Her so-called clan had left her in their clutches for 9-years, sacrificed her to keep themselves safe and not once regretted their decision. Hell, they probably didn't even think about it, they were probably just glad to get rid of the hybrid. But now she was out, training, learning, and living. That was until the clan needed to find a scapegoat for an unspeakable act, and where better to look than at the one whose very existence disgusts them. She has two weeks to prove her innocence, two weeks to free herself and her friends of the taint that follows their accusation and should she fail to do so everyone will pay the ultimate price.
Heir of Doom is book two in Jina S. Bazzar's, Roxanne Fosch files and works well as a stand-alone read. Roxanne's past actions return with force to not only bite her, but threaten her very future. The leader of her clan can't even stand to look at her, let alone afford her the protection she should have received all her life. You can't help but feel for her, in a new life a new city, yet she remains an outcast, alone amongst her so-called clan and despised by the Hunters. While the first book offered some steam and sizzle between Roxanne and Logan, this book takes a new turn as someone else steps up when her own clan once again disappoints her. I loved the character development and rising tensions. Revelations await about who she is, her past, and everything she has encountered so far. Action, insecurities, prejudice, animosity, and a dark scheme driven from the shadows propel the plot forward while Roxanne uncovers more about the life she should have had and the future that awaits her. She has some difficult choices to make, some impossible decisions. How much will she be willing to sacrifice to clear her name and safeguard the lives of the people she cares for?
It’s been a while since I read Heir of Ashes, the first Roxanne Fosch novel. This one reminded me how much I enjoyed this kick-ass female character, as well as Bazzar’s complex world-building. This book picks up where the last left off. Roxanne is training with the hunters, but her halfbreed status will always leave her an outsider. When a young girl goes missing, Roxanne’s clan singles her out for blame. It’s a set up, and she has two weeks to find the child or face execution.
The pace moves quickly, and the action is well done. Danger is Roxanne’s constant companion and it’s hard to know who she can trust among these powerful and ruthless preternatural beings. Across the board, the characters are compelling, demanding, and rather scary. I’d last about 2 minutes with this bunch. Roxanne is tough! But she has a soft side too that puts the reader solidly on her team.
The world-building around the story is complex. There are multiple dimensions, magic talents, preternatural beings, clans and hierarchies and histories. I recommend reading the series from the beginning in order to absorb the backstory as its shared and to get a grasp on the large number of characters and their roles. The book ends with a cliffhanger, so you’ll want to keep going onto Book 3. Recommended for readers of urban fantasy and paranormal thrillers.
Heir of Doom, the second book in The Roxanne Fosch series is a thrilling, action-packed fantasy, adventure novel told in the first person POV by the main character, Roxanne Fosch. Tension and suspense never let up as the story rolls to a shocking conclusion. The pacing is perfect for this genre, speeding up and slowing when needed.
At the beginning of the story, a question asked by a ten-year-old preternatural, Mwara, resonates throughout the novel. Mwara seeks Roxanne’s protection when she realizes the same organization of scientists, PSS that held Roxanne captive, is after her.
“Would you come for me?” she clenched my hand tightly in hers, strength no ten-year-old should possess. “Would you come? If they take me, would you come for me like you did for Archer?”
“I – I don’t know,” I replied.”
One sense reluctance and fear in Roxanne’s reply to Mwara, and rightly so given her clan’s, The Hunters, distrust. Already under her leader’s scrutiny, assuming responsibility for Mwara would cause more conflict. When Mwara disappears, the clan grows more suspicious, believing Roxanne’s involved. Can Roxanne endure this scrutiny or will she try to prove her innocence?
One can’t help feeling the whole world is against Roxanne. Her only trustworthy companions are her childhood friend, Vicky, and her familiar, Frizz. Even her leaders appear rivals as she undergoes scheduled, grueling physical training every day at The Hunter’s base, under the coaching of Douglas Vermourly, a.k.a. Diggy. Ms. Bazzar has a knack for writing action scenes and pulling the reader into every punch, kick, thrust, and defensive move Roxanne makes while training and during fights with opponents. But who among the men in her life—Vincent, Diggy, Logan, Zantry— are true friends? Which one will claim her heart?
Heir of Doom takes us into a wondrous world filled with preternatural creatures we couldn’t possibly imagine and dangerous spaces no one dare to venture, except Roxanne. In a strange sphere where a dark, dangerous cave exists, Roxanne fights for her life, discovers her true friends, and will sacrifice something precious to save her friends and prove her innocence.
Trust, self-discovery, and self-preservation are some of the themes in Heir of Doom. Yet to grasp her shifting abilities or command her powers, will Roxanne do so when most needed?
“Now that it has been confirmed that a monster slumbers in the depths of my soul, this battle of wills has taken a new importance, a new urgency. I must always win. Against all odds, no matter what, or how or when – I must win.”
Who and what is Roxanne? Who are her real parents? Will she find out?
“I must know, since I’ve been fighting this battle for the better part of my life, between the human part of me and the fee – or Unseelie. The dejected, kind part and the revengeful monster. I don’t always win. Or my human side, who I like to think is the one on the driver’s seat."
Ms. Bazzar’s story held my attention to the final build-up in the last chapters. Roxanne’s battle will leave you exhausted, fearful, tearful, terrified, and shocked at the conclusion. Book three in the series can’t come soon enough, and I anticipate learning Roxanne’s fate after such a shocking turn of fate at the end of Heir of Doom. Ms. Bazzar, thank you for the thrilling read. I highly recommend this book to those who love a good action fantasy adventure novel with a strong female lead!

MY REVIEW: I was given a free copy of this book for review.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first installment of this series, and I liked the second one even more. The excitement is amped up in ‘Heir of Doom’. The questions posed in book one are answered, but they open up their own cans of worms for Roxanne.
I felt like the pacing was better in this book. (I had no issues with the pacing in book one.) A lot happens in this installment, but at no point does it feel rushed or confusing or overwhelming. This book was easy for me to devour, and I wish I had the third book in my hands already.
I liked how the hierarchies of the clans and the Sidhe, both, were portrayed. In many of the character’s cases, they want to do better by Roxanne but are limited by their statuses within their societies. Most of them recognize that Roxanne has been abused from the start of her life, but they can only do so much to help her. The tension this creates made for a compelling plot.
Roxanne’s character develops a lot through this book. We see her tenderness and humanity a lot more than in book one. Her friendship with Vicky brings it out the most, but we see it with Zantry and Mwara, too. She’s still hurt, jaded, and ever-suspicious, as she should be based on her experiences, but she still wants to believe people are good. And she wants to do good, too.
Roxanne and Logan’s relationship is totally different in this book, and that felt weird to me at first. But, once I understood where both she and Logan rank within their clan, it made sense. Besides, just because two people go through something harrowing together, doesn’t mean they are destined to fall madly in love.
I’m unsure if I was sent an ARC of this novel, but there were several spelling and grammatical errors. All stuff easily fixed with another round of edits.
The book wraps up this chapter of Roxanne’s story nicely, but I felt a little disappointed that Vicky’s story was left hanging. I hope that’s going to be resolved in the third book.
All that said, I very much look forward to the next installment of this series, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fantasy adventure.
Disclaimer - the author approached me and sent a free ARC digital download of the book in exchange for an honest review.
The book follows on from where the first of the series left off with Roxanne now being a member of The Hunters, an organisation trusted with controlling the preternatural community. The adventure that follows has Roxanne making unlikely comrades and relationships, as well as somewhat solving the mystery surrounding her and why she came to be.
Although more questions appear than are answered through reading the book, it’s without question that it is an enthralling read. Full of mystery and intrigue, with enough drama and unravelling of events to leave you wanting to keep turning pages. I couldn’t put the book down (or my phone as I read an ecopy).
Upon finishing the book, my first thought was ‘wow’ and my second, I need more Roxanne Fosch. This is quickly becoming one of my favourite series that I’ve read and I can’t wait for the next instalment. The character and scene building by the author is exemplary, with so much attention to detail, it’s impossible not to be swept away with the story.
I would completely recommend The Roxanne Fosch Files to any fantasy lovers, it’s an excellent addition to the genre.

There are so many questions to answer with this book Who is really Roxanne's ally and who is her enemy? The question is complicated. What are her abilities and why do some people expect they might be wondrous? What is her parents' story and are they who she thinks they are? All the questions are what keep this book interesting. You might unweave something before the character does but you're right there in the journey with her. Can't wait for the next book.
Heir Of Doom (The Roxanne Fosch Files Book 2) by Jina S. Bazzar is such an awesome story that I have had the privilege to read. This is book number two in this awesome series that I have loved reading and can not wait to read the next book. I highly recommend this story to everyone.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
If you like grey morality, angst, fae mythology, and darker settings where fantasy meets science fiction, you'll love this series. It follows a classic style for greyer speculative fiction stories, so there's no way of it going wrong! For the people who read the first book, Heir of Doom also delves deeper into the many secrets of the preternatural world and of the past of the protagonist, Roxanne Fosch, which make it a read full of surprises.
The book felt a bit slow at times, since the writing is very descriptive, and I didn't like the end that much because, when the antagonist is revealed, I found them overpowered - but it's a matter of personal taste. As long as you don't mind that, Heir of Doom makes for a great story!
The plot is complex, with touches of mystery as Roxanne discovers things that had been hidden from her (or even the whole world) and looks for a missing child. And the setting is literally galactic, full of details to spark your curiosity.
Fantastic characters, well defined world. You just jump in and start running. Roxanne is a strong but damaged woman, doing her best to cope with her new life. Holding my breath for the next one.
Roxanne is a character who wedged herself under my skin from the previous book, a young woman, subjected to so much, anyone would have buckled and collapsed from the horrors she endured. But she held on, she didn't break. But she is broken, even though she's no longer captive, what was done to her changed her. Now working with the Hunters, she faces scorn and loathing from her peers, the Clan who was supposed to support her and aid her, can barely tolerate her and even those she thought were on her side, well, put it this way, they walk away, no one comes to help Roxanne. The only person Roxanne trusts, the only person firmly in camp Roxanne, is her best friend Vicky. Oh and Frizz, the cutest being she bonded with while in another realm. So, realistically, her life is a mess and boy does it get worse! Way, way worse! An apparently insignificant and unrelated event comes back to bite Roxanne, hard!
Thinking she'd gotten rid of Remo, that she can forge a new path, she learns a nasty truth. A truth that has devastating consequences on her....but that comes later on in the story. THAT event had my eyes growing bigger than saucers, wider and wider until I thought they might just fall out! The deceit! The mistrust! The horrors! This all shapes the story into a thunderous pounding read. This author delivers, every, single, time! This author breathes life into all her characters. This author had my head spinning in tune with Roxanne. One blow after another, one bombshell after another, rain on Roxanne, physical, emotional and psychological. What's really awesome about Roxanne is that though she was subjected to years of torture, her innate compassion and goodness is indelible. She fights for what is right, she fights for what is good, through any odds, even willing to sacrifice herself. Gosh, I cannot find the appropriate words to describe her prodigious character! Who I CAN describe, eloquently, is Remo...his character gave me a bad case of gas, you know, when your stomach aches so much and the only way to relieve it is, well, you get the picture! And then there were those I was torn on, the did I, didn't I like them scenario, Logan, Diggy, Roland, yeah, Ms Bazzar sure had me in a tizzy! Who I did like, besides Roxanne, Vicky and Frizz, was Zantry, I really REALLY liked him! I feel the author has just touched the tip of the iceberg with him, his unravelling, heck an I looking forward to it!
This staggering action packed book captivated every ioto of my being, the richness of the plot and the shock of the revelations, took on another level of brilliance. Roxanne's character took on another level of awesomeness. Her strength took on an unbelievable turn, the events were so unpredictable, so hidden and twisted, I felt as though I was hanging on by a thread! Holy moly was this a read to relish! This author has captivated me from the first book of hers I've read, she is, without doubt, one of the most talented authors I've come across, her wordsmithing, her proficiency for the dramatic, her aptitude to keep me riveted, her prowess in storytelling, is honestly one of a kind!
