I need a fresh start – not a workplace feud with a grumpy CFO who thinks I’m an absolute disaster. But here we are.
I knew my first day as a billionaire’s assistant was off to a bad start when I woke up in my car. In the parking lot. Drooling on myself.
I really knew it was bad when a growly, ridiculously hot man with piercing blue eyes banged on my window, accused me of being a vagrant, and told me to get lost.
Spoiler alert – he’s my new boss’s brother. And also my coworker. And, unfortunately, the Chief Financial Officer of my paycheck.
Rhett Raider is all scowls and spreadsheets, convinced I’m trouble wrapped in a curve-hugging skirt. (Okay, so maybe he’s not wrong about the trouble part.) But when a hurricane traps us together and our bickering turns into something else entirely, I start to think maybe there’s more to him than his grumpy exterior.
Too bad for me, he’s determined to uncover my secrets. And if he does, it’s not my job on the line. It’s my heart.
This enemies to lovers, office romance with a grumpy millionaire in a small town features a widowed heroine who can save herself – thank you very much, a millionaire who can’t help himself from trying to save her, a seal that doesn’t know it’s not a traffic stop, an otter that’s trying to steal the attention away from the seal, and a group of brothers who think pranking is an expression of love.
Until it was Real is a standalone novel in the Raider Brothers series.
Until it was Real – Rhett and Dakota’s story For the Promise – Jaxon and Blossom’s story From the Start – Kai and Harper’s story Since you Arrived – Zane and Sloane’s story After you Returned – Miles and Hazel’s story
D.E. Haggerty is actually just plain old Dena, but she thinks using initials makes her sound like one of the cool kids. She was born and raised in the U.S. but has spent the majority of her adult life abroad living in cool-sounding places like Istanbul, Heidelberg, and The Hague. She has job hopped from military policewoman to lawyer to B&B owner. She finally jumped off the job hopping bandwagon a few years ago when she decided to turn her addiction to romance novels into a career. If anyone has ideas on how to turn a love of wine into a job, she's all ears.
So good! If you're looking for a sweet, small-town romance with heart, humor, and a touch of grumpy-sunshine, this one’s for you! Dakota, the FMC, is a resilient, sassy woman trying to rebuild her life after the passing of her husband. Rhett, the MMC is a gruff but protective CFO determined to keep his prank-loving brothers and their business safe. The banter is snappy, the chemistry is undeniable, and the setting is complete with quirky townsfolk, mischievous brothers, and even a seal and an otte makes you wish could visit! While both Dakota and Rhett have their fair share of emotional baggage, watching them navigate their pasts and grudgingly fall for each other is heartwarming and fun! If you love found family, grumpy heroes with soft centers, and heroines who never back down, you’ll adore this story. Can’t wait to read the next one in this series!
𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐫𝐞: 💚 Enemies to lovers 💸 Millionaire 💼 Boss's brother 🏡 Small town 😉 Witty banter 😝 Laugh out loud romance 💞 Found family
You know those moments when your alarm doesn’t go off, you wake up drooling in your car, and the hot guy banging on your window turns out to be your new coworker?
No? Just my heroine?
Either way... Until It Was Real is out now!
This one’s got: 💼 A grumpy billionaire CFO 😬 An assistant who can save herself, thank you very much 🌪 One hurricane 🛏 Forced proximity 🐾 A seal who doesn’t understand traffic laws 🐾 An otter who wants to be the main character
And of course, witty banter, unexpected heart, and a whole lot of swoon.
And we’re back in smugglers cove! This series follows the raider brothers, aka Eli’s brothers that we met in the last book. I am excited to dive back into the world of smugglers cove. There’s still mermaids, smugglers, and of course Sammy the seal. Although Sammy is definitely upstaged by the adorable otter Viking in this one. It’s always fun jumping back into a world you love and this one is no different. I did struggle with both characters at times (it’s one of those where they both need some quality time with a therapist lol) but it was a fun easy read and I’m most definitely looking forward to Blossom and Jaxon’s story.
Do you love banter? Then this is the book for you! from start to finish each POV chapter is jam-packed with witty, giggle-out-loud banter between the characters.
It sometimes felt like I was watching a sitcom instead of reading a book and that was such a fun experience!
Dakota and Rhett are adorable and I'm so glad that we get to read about their story!
I liked the characters and the banter between the Raider siblings. They seem to have a great sibling group, some of whom seem like they are never going to grow up.
I do find it frustrating when the characters hide things or keep secrets and don't communicate like adults so I struggled at some points in this book. I do love how supportive the other characters are though so that was definitely a redemptive quality.

Thank you D.E. Haggerty and Hambright for this gifted copy!
I really enjoyed this book. Dakota and Rhett are definitely opposites attract. Grumpy x Sunshine are my favorite! Dakota is a ray of sunshine that I really enjoyed her meeting the Raider brothers. The Raider brothers definitely feel like something a bunch of adult brothers would be. Fighting all the time, threatening to tell their mom on each other, and the pranks. It was a great time everytime they got together.
Rhett was a great grumpy man! I didnt understand him wanting to get Dakota fired but did understand why he wanted to protect his family and himself. The way he 'trusted' her 100% but then wouldn't let her explain the needle was frustrating but its something that happens in a lot of relationships.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Dakota needs this job to pay down her crushing debt. Well, technically her late husbands’ debt to be exact.
No way is she letting Rhett Raider ruin this opportunity for her no matter how hot she thinks he is. He’s the CFO and the brother to her boss, so off limits!
Rhett finds Dakota fascinating and very attractive, but he can tell she’s hiding something and he’s determined to find out what it is. No way will he let anyone interfere with what his brothers have achieved.
Dakota is avoiding Mr. Grumpy (Rhett) as much as she can. The last thing she needs is to get involved with another man. Men are trouble with a capital ‘T’. Besides, she has secrets she doesn’t want anyone to know about, secrets that no one wants any part of so she’s happy to avoid Rhett at all costs.
However, the pull of attraction is too much for either of them to deny it forever. Will Rhett’s suspicion’s and Dakotas secrets prevent them from acknowledging their mutual attraction?
Another good one from author D.E.! If you follow her series, we got a glimpse of Dakota and Rhett in ‘Beyond the Hate’ book five of Smuggler’s Hideaway series. I was curious what their deal was and now I know and was not disappointed!
If you want a good time with snappy dialogue, interesting characters and just the right amount of heat and romance, this is a book for you.
Going back to Smugglers Hideaway this time around we meet Dakota a witty, curvy, klutz who’s had a rough time growing up. She escapes to Smugglers Hideaway and where she has a job well two of them to pay off her late husband’s gambling debts to a shark. One being the night manager at a hotel and the other being Eli’s PA. After working a late night at the hotel she goes yo the distillery to go to work but she ends up taking a nap. But she’s woken up by someone knocked on her window. Well she meets Rhett Raider the CFO the protector of the family. When he lays eyes on Dakota he feels the pull of attraction, but he thinks she’s keeping secrets and he’ll do anything to protect his family. Omg so many heart worthy characters like Sammy the seal and then there’s Viking the cute, adorable otter ohh my heart. I loved their story the banter, the pranks omg sometimes I was on Rhett’s side and wanted to strangle his brothers myself. But the connection the chemistry top notch.
4.5 stars! A quirky small town? Enemies-to-lovers? Rom com? Yes please. This one had me cackling, I had so much fun with the town and all the side characters. I felt a bit like Dakota just getting dropped in a new place, but loved getting to learn all the lore from the locals. I loved the tension between Dakota and Rhett, and was living for Rhett’s brothers pushing his buttons. Rhett & Dakota can only fight the pull so long before they snap, and then Rhett is all in, he can’t let her go and I loved watching him convince Dakota to give them a chance. He can be very persistent when needed! I just really enjoyed this one and how fun it was, with just a touch of mystery to Dakota’s backstory! I’m definitely interested in the rest of the brothers’ stories!
This author's writing has always resonated with me, but I've noticed a recurring theme in her books. She skillfully weaves humor and subtle suggestions throughout her stories. A common element is the presence of a handsome brother, and in this series, there are six of them which could potentially lead to a six-book series, each focusing on one brother. While I appreciate the lighthearted tone, I found Dakota's character to be somewhat annoying. As someone who values strong, independent women, I was disappointed by her prickly attitude. Her refusal to accept help or guidance from men, even when they were trying to be kind or supportive, was often misplaced. For instance, when Rhett paid off her debt, I saw it as a generous gesture, rather than an attempt to exert control. Perhaps my perspective is influenced by a romanticized view of relationships, where a loving partner with the means to help would be a welcome presence in one's life. i’m actually looking forward to the next book because I love the cute nerdy guy.
I was given an advance copy of this book for free, and I’m leaving my review voluntarily.
This book… what can I even say? If you, like me, enjoy reading a book that is written in a way people around you actually speak, and you like a modern romance, this one is for you!
I was fortunate to get an advanced copy to read, and honestly I can’t wait to get reading more D. E. Haggerty books! This was my first but it definitely won’t be my last!
Such an easy and fun read. The “make you giggle out loud” kind of fun. Oh, and the steamy moments…. Pure fire!
I don’t even want to give you any spoilers. Read it!

I really enjoyed this book! It was funny and sweet and charming with some emotional moments too. I loved the small town vibes, the mermaids and the banter! This book has some of the best banter and it starts right away!! Dakota and Rhett have such great chemistry and they really push each other’s buttons. He is a broody grump and she is sassy…but underneath they are both dealing with trust issues and being hurt.
I am seriously in love with these characters - there are so many laugh out loud moments. I also liked the small town shenanigans/quirky moments. Jaxon’s book is next!
✨ What To Expect: 🌊 Small Town 💚 Enemies to lovers 💸 Millionaire 💼 Boss's brother 😉 Witty banter 🧲 Opposites Attract 😝 Laugh out loud romance 💞 Found family 🧜🏻♀️ Mermaids 🧨 Brotherly Pranks

So she is working two jobs and gathering a good bit of new friends but Rhett is bound to reveal her secrets. And when they all come to light he thinks the worse. Received as an ARC and leaving my honest review voluntarily. As always, you can expect a sweet, heartwarming, emotional, funny and all round feel good moments with this author's work. Both Rhett and Dakota have trust issues but for different reasons. And in her case it's left her with a huge load of problems which leads her to Smuggler's Hideaway and the Raider brothers. Their first meet was not a good first impression but sparks and sass defnitely fly with these two. Add in the shenanigans of the brothers, and it makes for a hilarious read with so much family warmth and love. Loved reading Rhett and Dakota's journey to HEA and you definitely want to download the bonus epilogue which packed so much emotional punch! Can't wait to read Jaxon and Blossom's story next.
Rhett is the perfect grump. He is broody, protective and can actually admit when he is wrong! You can't get better than that!
As usual Ms. Haggerty had writing such a great story that I started it this morning and finished it this afternoon! I can never get enough of her tales.
Great humour laced throughout the story really helps ease the heavy, heartbreaking moments!
I'm slightly disappointed we didn't spend more time with Sammy and Viking but I will learn to accept it.
This is a fun, entertaining read. It’s fun to be back in Smuggler’s Hideaway and see some familiar characters. The Raider brothers are going to make for some interesting heroes 😊. Watching these men meet and fall for their matches is going to make for some good reading. And Rhett didn’t disappoint. Watching him fall in love and learn to trust is fun to read. Getting to see his softer side is special. I enjoyed the romance and getting to spend time with Rhett and Dakota. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and get into.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
What a great story with Rhett and Dakota, it certainly sets the pace for all the trouble the Raider brothers bring to Smugglers Hideaway. I really enjoyed how Dakota reacts to Rhett and the heat it brings out in him. It truly is a love story with quite a few twists. I look forward to the rest of the books in the series.

Dakota moving to Smugglers Hideaway and working at the distillery, plus evenings at the motel is her new normal. Since her husband died and left all his debts to her plus loosing her home this is the new start she needs. After all she has nobody missing her, friends suddenly disappeared and having no family she's free to start over. Well maybe after her debts are paid off eventually. Rhett knew his brothers to well, he's used to their pranks but he won't let anyone take advantage of them. His brothers new PA is hiding something, there's just something about her she's definitely got secrets and he'll find them. Nobody fools him or his family. Known for his grumpiness and his need to be in control Rhett knows he needs to protect his family. Being back in Smugglers Hideaway we get to know the Ryder brothers more, whilst still having a few of the regular characters making appearances, especially Sammy the seal and Viking the otter. I'm so excited to read the next in the brothers stories. Make sure to add this to your tbr list you won't regret it
This is the 1st book in the Raider Brother's Series, and I loved it! Rhett and Dakota clashed from their very first meeting with lots of name calling and a few pranks!! Neither were looking for love, Dakota because she's been let down before, and Rhett had trust issued after his father walked out and left his family. Will this unlikely couple be able to overcome their fear and grab a chance a love? Brilliant storyline with superb characters and absolutely loved the HEA, especially the bonus epilogue! I received an ARC copy of this book via the author and I'm willingly leaving an honest review.
I just want to live in Smugglers Cove!! I just love the little animal mascots and all of the shenanigans. This was just such a fun read! I always love a good enemies-to-lovers. It is the second book I have read from this author and it did not disappoint!!!
I am so happy @dehaggerty and @hambright_pr sent me this ARC of a new Smugglers Hideaway series! I loved every minute of it!
As we start down the road to the Raider brothers’ HEA, we find ourselves in the relationship of Rhett and Dakota. I generally love everything that Ms. Haggerty writes…but I was just a tad disappointed with this one. I’m hoping it’s just a little hiccup as the new series gets underway. As always, the storyline was cute and started off with a misunderstanding; the main characters were layered really well but Rhett’s brothers are too ridiculous for words; the plot twists and turns were interesting—and very surprising; but the real saving grace of this story was the HEA. It will take your breath away! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was a tad disappointed. You should read a copy for yourself!) ❤️
Until It Was Real, by DE Haggerty: ARC Book Review

Many thanks to the Author and Hambright PR for the advanced copy 💕
“A quick rundown. Smugglers are sexy. Mermaids are real. And seals are wild animals. They shouldn’t be touched.”
Until It Was Real, by DE Haggerty is a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy and a promising beginning of The Raider Brothers, an interconnected standalone book series. I really enjoyed this read — specifically the lovable characters, menagerie of quirky animals, the location, brotherly antics, and especially the enemies to lovers romance between Rhett Raider and Dakota Ball.
“She tastes of strawberries and sin.”
Dakota Ball, widowed, chronically clumsy, and terribly in debt, is staying at Mermaid Motel where she works the night shift, and has taken a second job at a whiskey distillery, working for her billionaire boss, Eli Raider, as his personal assistant. After a rather rude awakening from his brother, Rhett — millionaire, part-owner of the distillery and new colleague — suspicions are raised and accusations against her are made. He all but makes it his mission to have her fired from a job she desperately needs. Dakota does have secrets, but not of the variety Rhett assumes, setting the stage for enemies-to-lovers GOLD.
“Sweet and innocent? Dakota is devious, and she’s obviously keeping secrets from us. I will not allow some woman to come in here and ruin the business we’ve built as a family. No one will destroy this family. Not even our father.”
Rhett Raider is extremely protective of his brothers, ever since his Father left the family, leaving fifteen-year-old Rhett and older brother Eli to pick up the pieces and take care of their younger brothers. This protective quality unfortunately makes him suspicious of others, like Dakota. His suspicion rears its ugly head just as she thinks they are making progress, time and time again. They hit a turning point when Rhett does an 180, making it his mission to keep her by his side by impressing her with new experiences, some luxurious, hoping it isn’t too late.
“I have no desire to watch her get dragged by a suitcase over the baggage belt.”
I loved the witty banter between Rhett and Dakota, but even funnier was their inner perspectives and thoughts. I nearly lost it when Rhett watched Dakota try her most stubborn attempt ever to lift heavy luggage off the conveyer belt, it nearly carrying her around, white knuckles refusing to loose grip. Rhett’s inner thoughts were hysterical and I loved how Dakota was less than graceful and a total klutz because it was fuel on the fire of hilarious moments and just as hysterical POV.
“Here’s to the bootleggers. Masters of sneaky sips and secret stashes.”
I also liked the small town (Island?) setting of Smuggler’s Hideaway and all the fun activities, events, and Festivals, especially Ghost Tide Festival. The characters are quirky and the animal mascots even more so. How fun!
“Everything on the island is mermaid or smuggler themed.”
Since there was backstory of Eli and Paisley, I assumed this was book 2 of The Raider Brothers series and was rather surprised to discover otherwise. I did like the brief POV of Blossom, brother Jaxon Raider’s (kinda his) girl, and look forward to their romance!
Without revealing too much: I would have liked to see how the situation with Grigori was handled and I was surprised more questions weren’t asked because I would’ve had a few questions personally. 😂
Overall, I loved this read. From accusations that Dakota is out to bag a billionaire, heartbreak, then to Rhett slaying her dragons, with a whole heaping ton of forced proximity, spice, found family, brotherly antics and pranks, and some misunderstandings between, Until It Was Real was an enjoyable read with many laugh-out-loud moments, highly recommended to fans of Millionaire/Billionaire, enemies to lovers, and small town romance.
“She slips her hand into mine and warmth spreads throughout my body. This must be how love feels. It’s not only sweaty nights spent tangled in sheets. It’s also the quiet contentedness of being around a person. Of wanting to spend all your time with that person.” Full Review ➡ https://awellreadwomanblog.wordpress....
What a great start to a new series from D E Heggerty, pure romantic escapism. Life had thrown yet another curved ball at Dakota Bell, after her husband's tragic death, Dakota discovered that the one person that she thought was the one constant in her life had actually cheated on her, gambled and left her with a huge debt to pay off, she would probably be paying off the loan sharks for the rest of her life. Landing in Smugglers Hideaway, Dakota managed to get two jobs, one as night receptionist at the hotel where she had a room and one as PA to the millionaire boss of a distilling company. Although Dakota made a bad first impression at the PA job, her life was about to change for the better, her boss Eli had set up the distillery to give jobs to his five siblings, Zane was head of marketing, Jaxton was the master distiller, Miles was sales manager, Kai operations manager and Rhett in charge of finance, how any whiskey got sold between the high jinx and the pranking is anybody's guess. Rhett disliked Dakota from the start, the attraction was too much for him, he didn't want a woman turning his ordered life upside down but he didn't allow for cupid and all it took was one little arrow. This is feisty, fiercely independent Dakota and grumpy Rhett's story, they argue, fall in love, argue some more until, with much prompting from the brothers and friends, they reach their HEA. This is a mad, crazy story filled with witty banter, with wonderful characters, characters who take Dakota into their hearts. Thank you for this ARC, my review is voluntary.
I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the Smuggler's Hideaway world! We briefly met Rhett and Dakota in Eli's story, and this runs concurrent with the events that happened there. Dakota is such a spitfire, it's obvious she fits in with the women in town! She's down on her luck and has had some bad experiences but is determined to make a better life for herself without depending on anyone. That combined with her independent streak is what makes her so relatable. The way the brothers quickly come to include her is heartwarming and hilarious, including her in prank wars when she doesn't put up with anything from either Rhett or the rest of the Raider crew. I wish the characters were real so we could be friends!
We see Paisley and the brothers throughout, and since I enjoy a good crossover, this one is up there. Even though that story was part of a different series, you don't see a disconnect. You don't need to read all of the Smuggler's books, but I highly recommend it!
Ms. Haggerty always manages to infuse witty banter into a captivating storyline, with a trope that doesn't feel like it has been repeated a ton of times before. Her stories are always original and funny while also being realistic and down to earth. She is one of the few authors that I will drop everything to read, always managing to brighten my day whenever I'm stressed or not feeling great. Take my advice and read this author! This book is a great start to what I'm sure will be an amazing series!
I loved this book! It had me cracking up so many times. I couldn’t put it down and I can’t wait to read about the rest of those handsome and delicious Raider brothers.
Dakotah finds herself in Smugglers Hideaway looking for a fresh start. Her life recently has not been easy when her husband passed away and she learned of his bad habits, leaving her broke and with a lot of debt. She is working nights at a local hotel and she is an assistant during the day for a local billionaire. Dakotah is so dang sassy and witty, had me rolling with her comebacks. This woman is strong, independent, and she is not going to let another man betray her like her dead husband.
Rhett…whew this man is a grump! He has had to take care of his brothers since he was a teen and his father left his family. He is very protect of his brothers and very skeptical of anyone new around them. So when a beautiful new woman starts working for Eli his guard is up and he is very suspicious of her. He is determined to figure out all her secrets.
Dakotah fits in so well with the Raider brothers. Her pranks were epic and had me cracking up. She knew exactly how to get under Rhett’s skin, but she didn’t realize just how far she was getting. When the two were near each other, sparks were flying. So much sexual energy, but there was so much more. Dakotah had caught Rhett’s eye and he was captivated by her. Her wanted to protect her and make all of her troubles go away.
D.E Haggerty’s Until It Was Real: An Enemy to Lovers small-town romantic comedy (The Raider Brothers Book 1) is a romance between a newcomer to Smuggler’s Hideaway Dakota Bell’s new job as a personal assistant at Buccaneer’s Whiskey and Distillery begins with a run in with a co-owner Rhett Raider who is the brother to her new boss Eli Raider. Working for Eli Raider brings Dakota and Rhett into proximity. He is determined to discover the secrets he is sure she is hiding as he takes a protective stance for his family. Dakota has secrets but has no connection to hurting the Raider family; it all has to do with her past and what she was left to deal with when her husband died in a car accident. Dakota is kept busy working two jobs but feels attracted to Rhett despite his thoughtless comments and actions when she pulls a few pranks on him involving his computer and a pot of coffee, which is quite hilarious. Rhett likewise feels an overwhelming magnetic pull towards Dakota but refuses to act on it until he does. Crossed lines, carrying baggage from the past, one surrounded by family, the other lacking family. Each desires a relationship but fears that commitment will only bring pain and disappointment. The love story between Rhett and Dakota is another winner in Until It Was Real by D. E. Haggerty. I stumbled across her books by first reading her rockstar books, and then I had to read any book she had written in her past catalog and any of her future books as a fun, good read.
I just finished "Until It Was Real" by D.E. Haggerty, and what a delightful read it was! I'm giving this one 4 out of 5 stars because it truly hit the mark on two key aspects for me: the romance was incredibly charming, and the pacing was absolutely perfect.
From start to finish, I was completely invested in the journey of [briefly mention main characters/trope if you want, e.g., the protagonists / this fake relationship/friends-to-lovers story]. The way the relationship developed felt natural and genuinely heartwarming. D.E. Haggerty crafted a connection that was easy to believe in and even easier to root for. There was just the right amount of sweetness, humor, and emotional depth to make the love story truly enjoyable.
Beyond the lovely romance, the pacing of this book was excellent. The story flowed smoothly, keeping me engaged without ever feeling rushed or dragging. Each chapter moved the plot forward effectively, building anticipation and ensuring I always wanted to know what would happen next. It made for a very satisfying and quick read that I didn't want to put down.
If you're looking for a contemporary romance that delivers on sweet moments and keeps you turning pages effortlessly, "Until It Was Real" is definitely worth picking up. It's a charming story that left me with a happy sigh!

This is Dakota and Rhett’s story. I loved this book so much. I love Smugglers Cove and all the characters.
I want siblings like the Raider brothers! The banter between them in this book is amazing and laugh out loud funny.
The side characters in this book are adorable. Sammy the seal we’ve already met and Viking the otter.
Dakota moves to Smugglers Cove after her husband died leaving her buried under gambling debts. She takes on two job - one has a night manager at a motel and the other as Eli’s personal assistant.
On her first day of work with Eli she is found asleep in her car in the parking lot by Rhett. They both felt the connection and electricity.
The banter, pranks and watching them fall in love had me smiling and warmed my heart.
