Colonial Massachusetts, 1775

Abigail Stowell is a rarity for her time. The comely young woman is educated, outspoken, and attuned to the charged political climate around her. She is a staunch Patriot. In short, she is a rebel. So when Gideon Whitlock, an avowed Tory, rides into her village, Abby is not only put off by his politics and arrogance but is also annoyed by her undeniable attraction to him.

When she observes a clandestine meeting between her Patriot father and Gideon, Abby soon realizes that in a world divided by loyalties, not everything is as it seems. Soon she is drawn deeper into political intrigue than she ever dreamed possible. And just as feelings begin to heat up between Abby and Gideon, the shot heard round the world ignites the beginning of war between the colonists and the British redcoats. There is no time for hesitation, and Abby finds herself thrust into a world of intrigue, treachery, and terror. Lives hang in the balance, and Abby will stop at nothing to support the Patriot movement - but will her allegiance to the cause mean losing the man she loves?

Whenever I read a good book set in Colonial times it makes me feel patriotic and humbled by the men and women who lived during such a turbulent and important era, participating in the formation of our country and fighting for liberty. Petticoat Spy has a strong heroine who is passionate for the cause, and learning to balance speaking out for her convictions with maintaining a ladylike demeanor and schooling her mind to bring honor to her family name. Although Abby has an impetuous nature, she is intelligent and grows throughout the story from her experiences. I liked Gideon from the start and how he admires Abby even when she is at odds with him. There is a suspenseful tension as the danger increases, yet the author weaves in a sweet romance between the two patriots, however inopportune the circumstances. I really loved the historical details that enhanced the setting and gave me a feeling of being there with the characters. Highly recommend to fans of historical fiction and those who enjoyed the books of Amber Lynn Perry and Ann Rinaldi!

I was super excited to start reading this because I've always loved history about early America, and I'd been looking for a novel about spies in this era, too. Unfortunately, I came away feeling entirely "meh" about this book. It was written well, mind you, but the story itself was pretty lacking and the characters were all cut from the same cloth.

Abby was 100% a total Mary-Sue. If you dislike any novel with Mary-Sues are the main character, do not read this book. Every time a man looked at Abby, she noted his "appreciative gaze." Every time she went to complete a task, she did it without any issue. She thought she knew better than a doctor and refused to do as he instructed just because she had a hunch. (An entirely 21st century minded hunch, but that's another issue.) Abby as a character really frustrated me because she had little depth. She was practically perfect in every way, zero flaws, zero interests that set her apart from others.

The story was pretty good, though. I was truly interested to see how Abby would navigate Boston, and I had no idea how she thought she would find information beneficial to the rebellion. But then the side-story with her taking care of Aunt Caroline totally took over and I didn't find that very interesting. Her motivation to help the rebels was pushed to the back-burner and didn't appear again until she was nearly ready to leave Boston.

I would totally suggest this story for someone who likes romance novels that isn't heavy on the romance. The male-interest Gideon doesn't actually appear too often in the story. The romance is more of an extra than a main part of the novel. I didn't mind that; it was actually refreshing.

In the end, while Petticoat Spy was good, I don't think it was for me. I saw a lot more potential in the book than was given.

*My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased, honest review.*

This book is easy to get lost into. I fell in love with the characters and the plot was intriguing!

The book begins just before the US Revolutionary War. The main character is Abigail Stowell. She is the daughter of a revolutionist. I loved reading the historic events through the eyes of someone who was experiencing them. I realize she is a fictional character, but it had an authentic feel to it.

Abigail is willingly brought into a world of becoming a spy and passing information to someone who is considered to be a Tory, but really working for the Patriots. She has passion for reform and wants to be of help. She is a strong women during a time when women were not supposed to be strong. I loved her enthusiasm, intellect, and courage.

The love interest is dangerous. They develop feeling for each other when it is not safe or prudent. War is on the horizon and the time for romance is fleeting. I liked the sparks between them.

In short, if you enjoy historical fiction with action and romance, you may want to pick up this book. It is written well and runs at a great pace.

PETTICOAT SPY may look like an unsuspecting sweet romance with some minor spying, but the story is so much more. Full of danger, deception, and a fight for the characters' very lives makes for a riveting tale. Then also add in a little whimsy with a wise woman who receives warnings and some predictions, a quaint town, a loving family, a world in turmoil on the brink of war, and a dashing gentleman to charm the heroine's heart. Historical romance and suspense readers are sure to enjoy!

I fell in love with these characters almost immediately. Abigail or "Abby" was such a spitfire. I loved her passion, but also her intellect and wit. I also couldn't help but love the sparks that flew between Gideon and her. The author did a wonderful job of conveying plenty of tension and chemistry. I also appreciated that Abby grew more into herself, that she learned from some prior mistakes. There were a slue of other characters that came alive in this story as well, including a very cunning villain.

The story kept a fairly constant underlying feel of suspense that gradually grew until I literally was holding my breath waiting to see if these characters would make it out alive in the end. The plot may not have been completely realistic all the time, but was definitely plausible. There weren't any places where I felt things were too easy or where characters didn't react consistently. The romance also didn't overtake the story. There were other aspects at play and all the pieces worked well together. It was definitely an engaging story from beginning to end.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Yes. This was actually more than I was expecting and a great combination of romance, humor, and suspense.

Content: Some violence.

This Revolutionary War era fictional tale tells the story of Abigail, who wants more than anything to help the patriots like her father with the war effort. When she meets Gideon Whitlock, she is revolted by the arrogant Tory. But things aren’t always as they seem, and as she moves to Boston to help her dear friend, Aunt Caroline, she discovers dangerous truths that will put her life, and those she loves, at risk. This was an awesome book! I loved Abby’s courage and need for adventure. She does daring things that are both stupid and bravely honorable. The villain is well-done—extremely icky and vile—and the side characters add dimension that make it a thoroughly enjoyable ride. The way the author wove the history into the story was pieced together so flawlessly that I felt as if I was there and participating…and it was both thrilling and frightening. I love learning about history through well-written and researched novels like this. Two thumbs up and a huge grin for this story. ***I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Oh my heavens!!! I was seriously turning the pages as fast as possible. I picked up the book and not too many pages in I could tell this was going to be one of those books for me where I wouldn't want to set it down. I loved the historical setting, pre-revolutionary war. I loved the characters. I loved the sweet romance. I loved the suspense and intensity during several parts, especially the last half(or more) of the book. I loved the villain.....I know, I did just say that. Ok maybe love is the wrong word as in good feels towards the villain but honestly I loved the way the author wrote that character. Seriously caught me off guard. You didn't quite think that this person would be the ultimate villain of the story. I could tell that there was a little shadiness to that character but when push came to shove, seriously didn't think it was going to go that way. Let's just say I was on the Edge of My Seat!!!! Well not quite literally per se but you get the picture.

I was reading a good portion of the end while reclined back and the anticipation and suspense were killing me, my heart was racing, I started tapping my foot in anticipation, I was reading as fast as I could because I just had to find out what was going to happen. AHHHH!!! It was awesome! I seriously haven't stayed up late reading a book into the night for a long time. This one, oh yeah it beat out my pure exhaustion. I honestly couldn't put it down. I put my kids to bed and snuggled up to read and read and read and read.....until almost 2 am. Yes I was tired the next day but it was worth it!

I really liked Abigail Stowell. She was a great heroine. She was a young woman with brains and intuition and spunk. She wasn't afraid to speak up...although she regretted it many times, because let's face it that was not what was acceptable or ok for women at that time. And yet her father was so good and saw those wonderful qualities and helped to encourage her to follow through with what she had been taught without losing the ability to think and learn and help.

Abigail's family knows war is coming. Her father has been on the forefront of preparing for it for quite a while. While they have suffered much heartache recently, they are not about to be forced to do something or live a certain way that goes against basic humanity. Nor would they allow that to be forced on their fellowmen. Before Abigail knows it she is embroiled in passing messages, picking up tracts, and all sorts of other crazy, heart stopping schemes. All in the name of freedom.

Although this is a historical fiction I really felt that it did a good job of portraying the lives of those who lived, risked and died during those years around the American Revolution. The writing was wonderful. I was drawn in from the beginning. It wasn't always a fast paced, action packed read. Rather there were moments of quiet and reflection as well as learning for both the characters and readers. And yes as you can tell from my previous musings, plenty of action. Sometimes the action was intense due to the characters physically hurrying, but other times just as intense from little moments. That could be very vague for you but I can't spoil it.

Let's see if I can give you some key words that will clue you in to what awaits you in this heart pounding read(heart pounding for multiple reasons of action- swoony and scary).

Horses, guns, Concord and Lexington, farmers, minutemen, petticoats(of course), hidden books, poison, false impressions, taverns, kisses, cannons, bread pudding, stolen moments, secret glances, redcoats, stables, maids, facades, kisses(yes I'm saying it again), crows, herbs and healing, battle wounds, musket balls, cat, Boston, friends, generals, wigs, gold, secret notes, courage, private dinners, church, amusement and espionage.

Those might just sound like random words to you but when/if you read the book you will understand.

I loved it! I'm sure you have gathered that but it was everything a historical fiction novel should be. Intensity, historical insight, connection to what real living people went through, connection to the characters due to their plight, a feeling of gratitude for sacrifices made, and some good sweet clean romance. *dreamy sigh*

Content: some war wounds, some brief descriptions of battle, nothing too graphic. The romance was clean with a few kisses. All in all, I'd say it's a clean read.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions within the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I've been reading a lot of regency novels lately and this book was a refreshing change in scenery. I love books set during important times in history and this one takes place just before the Revolutionary War in America. The Patriot movement is increasing and strengthening and Abigail Stowell finds herself right in the middle of it.

Abby is a strong and determined girl. She has a keen mind and desperately wants to be a part of the cause she so strongly believes in. This leads her to a few impossibly difficult situations but with the help of good friends she manages to get through.

The story flowed so well. It gave me a chance to know all the characters, their strengths and weaknesses but kept events happening and momentum building so that I never grew bored or disinterested. With every turn of the page I felt my anxiety increasing because I just knew something bad was going to happen but I didn't know when and I didn't know how Abigail and Gideon could possibly get out of the mess they were in. I desperately wanted to know and to get to the end for my own resolution. It is always so good to be compelled to read on and not want to put a book down. :)

If you love historical fiction, you don't want to miss out on this book!

Content: Some mild violence, drugging, abuse. A few instances of kissing. Clean.

Carol Warburton has written a delightful and adventurous romance in her Revolutionary War novel, Petticoat Spy. I have always loved novels written about the Revolutionary War and Warburton’s novel is no different. From the cover of the novel, to the back cover blurb, to the first page, this book will captivate the attention of readers. I love how the main character, Abigail Stowell, is brave and bold and wants to help with the war effort; to do something to make a difference. And in the process falls in love. This is a charming read for those that love historical fiction and romance.

I love Revolutionary War history. This historical fiction is set in Boston as men begin gathering to fight and people pick sides. Abigail passes information on to the patriots. The story is woven with compelling storylines of Abigail's efforts to discover information despite danger, her relationship with Gideon, and helping a close family friend. I like Abigail, Gideon, Abigail's father, and the woman who resembles a witch.

It seems like Abigail spends a lot of effort getting into Boston, and Gideon spends a lot of effort to safely get her out. The beginning half of the book is my favorite, maybe because she's making mistakes and trying to piece together Gideon. The ending left me wanting more on the status of the Revolutionary War (because Washington is my favorite), and I wanted a historical note on what women did to help during this time. (I was hoping for more of an ending tied-in to Washington taking Dorchester Hill-with a lot of artifice since they didn't have enough guns and powder-and the British heading out.)

For those content-sensitive, there's an abusive husband, an attempted seduction/rape (stopped before it started), poisoning/addiction, and some kissing.

A young woman whose father is a “rabble rouser” because of his association with troublemakers like Samuel Adams is recruited to pass messages just prior to the events at Lexington and Concord in April 1775. Once she has succeeded in that – and fallen for the recipient of the message, a lawyer in Tory-controlled Boston – she is given permission to go to the occupied city to care for her ailing aunt in the home of one of General Gage’s main intelligence sources!

As time passes, she learns that her aunt is not as sick as once thought – but her husband is a very sick man! – and a dramatic escape is planned. But even the best laid plans go awry…

An enjoyable yarn in colonial Massachusetts that brings to life the drama of the times, it was worth reading.

One of my favorite genres is historical fiction. Toss in some Revolutionary War, a female spy, and a little romance and it's so easy and fun (but suspenseful) to read and I love that while I read this genre, I learn some things I didn't know before (even though some of the characters are fictional, the main events happen the same way).
I thought this book was clever and interesting and full of unique characters (most of whom you cannot help but love!)

Petticoat Spy is quite a good historical fiction. It's about a girl named Abigail who wishes to help the Patriots against the Redcoats. She ends up being a great asset to the Patriots. It takes place right around the time that the war started. I tend to avoid things based on history because it means it must adhere to real life laws, but this was quite the good book. The characters were all very well fleshed out, and the slow reveal of just how evil Mr. Lind was came as a surprise for me. Overall I give this book a 4 out of 5 because, while it is a great book, at the end of the day it's still a historical book, and history tends to be boring to me.

This is a great book! I loved it from the very beginning.

I really loved Abigail, I loved the way she was willing to step up in a time that women were pretty much expected to sit in the corner quietly and work on their sewing. She had opinions, strong ones, and she was willing to express them and even get into trouble for them when she acted on them. I also loved that she was willing to apologize when she needed to. And I loved the way she went out of her way to care for her invalid "aunt," and put herself into danger at the same time, because she believed that it was the right thing to do.

Abby's is the only point of view you see in the book, and she has a great outlook on things. It would have been really fun to see what Gideon's thoughts were, especially when she believed that he was a Tory and against everything she believed in herself. I did love the lengths that he went to to protect Abby in any way he could from the danger that was all around her.

I loved the plot of this one, it's full of danger, intrigue and I loved the romance aspect as well. This is a really well-done, fun book!

Abigail's family are staunch Patriots, so her first meeting with Gideon, a Tory, doesn't go so well. However, she soon comes to find out that there is more to Gideon than she thought--he is actually spying for the Patriots. As tensions heighten between the two sides, Abigail's realizes that as a woman, underestimated by men, can do some spying of her own. As most Patriots are leaving Boston, she goes to stay with family friends in the city, where she finds herself father's former friend is not what he seemed. She and Gideon must find a way to get safely out of the city and warn the Patriots of what they have learned.

I was intrigued by this book right from the start. I loved outspoken Abigail and seeing how she was committed to her cause. The unfolding drama as she headed to Boston was well-written, and of course, I loved the romance angle. Really enjoyed it. 4.5 stars.

One of my favorite books has long been Johnny Tremain, and I loved that this one had a similar setting—Boston and the surrounding area in 1775. This story had a good amount of history woven into a clean love story, told with beautiful prose. I enjoyed this one enough that I plan to look up some of the author’s other books.

It's been awhile since I've read a romance, and the Revolutionary War is my favorite time period, so I just had to pick this up.

Even though this book was written recently, it does a great job at capturing the time period. I also like that it focused on the beginning of the war. I do wish I had been more aware of the timeline from the beginning, as I kept wondering when the historical events were going to move forward. Now, having finished the book, I can see why the author choose to keep most of the story in that period of waiting, after the first shots of the war had been fired but before more battles were fought.

My biggest complaint about this book is the romance. I enjoyed every time her and Gideon were together, but it happened so little that I still know almost nothing about Gideon, even after finishing the book. They fell in love with each other really quickly while only having very short conversations that were rarely about themselves (and if it was about themselves, it was simply Abigail saying she could handle the danger). I know it's a dangerous time period and they're both playing a dangerous game, but... I would have loved if they had spent more time getting to know each other. Gideon seemed like such an interesting guy, so it's a shame how little is learned about him.

Then we come to Abigail's spy plot. I enjoyed it, but it also takes awhile to really get going. Not that I minded too much, as it's clear before the spy plot starts that this is a slower-moving book, and I did find myself caring about the seemingly unrelated subplots. Once things get going, though, there were a few times I found myself needing to cover up the next page so my eyes didn't jump ahead. When tension was needed, the author knew how to deliver.

Overall, the romance is the weakest part of this book, but I still enjoyed it. The pacing is slow, but there are times the tension is quite thick. While Abigail is pretty bold for a woman from that time period, it never feels out of place--especially with the occasional consequences that follow.

Petticoat Spy had all the enticing ingredients to become a book I would utterly love — strong female character, historical tale, some spying, much family drama and a promising love interest… Even the sleek cover instantly caught my eye! I was suppose to adore it! So understand my frustration when I started to realise that I couldn’t relate to the story. Why on earth couldn’t I fully enjoy it and “get into” the book?

To be fair, I did find some scenes captivating, especially those where Abigail finds herself in danger. She has to be extra cautious, witty and inconspicuous. Given the context and the social climate, it was quite fascinating to watch her navigate her mission — an extraordinary destiny of hers. But I never really connected with the characters. I thought the intrigue began to gain intensity in the last half of the book with the whole drama surrounding her aunt Caroline and uncle Joseph. I thought it was quite well narrated.

I think it might have been a better idea to have Abigail begin her full-on infiltration mission in Boston much earlier in the plot. Maybe it lacked intensity in the first half. That could explain why I never really delved into the intrigue. Maybe it’s just the style that didn’t speak to me!?

Overall, I thought the book had great potential and I actually quite liked the ending which was satisfying and well-paced. I just wished I had connected with the overall intrigue on a much deeper, emotional level. I remain slightly disappointed but I believe it deserves 2 hearts which means “I liked the book” (which I did) according to my scoring sheet. If only I liked it more…

Finally, the author added some historical facts at the end of the book. A very good idea!

2.5 but I will round up to 3. This is the 3rd book of Carol Warburton I have read. While she comes up with some intriguing story lines her heroine, I am coming to realize, seems to be always the perfect woman (and usually very comely- a word she uses far too often). I am willing to overlook it a bit in this book because of the historical nature and the setting during the American Revolution. I love learning about this time period and so really enjoyed the reminder of what happened during these events. If you are interested in the romance of the book, it is lacking. I would have liked to have seen our heroine get more involved socially in and see how she fared in society. I think the spy factor would have been much more intriguing even if it really didn't happen this way. Hey, this is fiction. It also had a really slow start and only the promise of something better made me keep going. Overall, not a bad book but it was lacking enough that it didn't stand out for me.

I listened to the audiobook. I love listening to or reading historical fiction. It is a way to make our history seem more real. This was a fun book with Gideon and Abigail as main characters. Gideon is first seen as a staunch Tory. Abigail can’t stand him and his cockiness. She wants nothing to do with the man who has different political views. She is a staunch Patriot. She soon realizes that Gideon isn’t who he seems and she can’t withstand her attraction to him. Abigail has desires to help the Patriots. She also wants to get to know Gideon better. Gideon is in Boston. Boston is a dangerous place for the Patriots but she soon finds that the dangers that lurk there are greater than she could have imagined. Can she get to know Gideon whole she also helps the Patriots? Do Gideon and Abigail have a chance at happiness? Only one way to find out.

I enjoyed this book for what it was-the POV of a young country lady, the archetype of the oldest daughter who goes against the grain.

The book centers around the very beginnings of the American Revolution, and our heroine's small part in it.

TW: marital abuse, attempted rape by the villain

The romance in the narrative is milquetoast for two reasons: number one, the social constraints of the day, and two, the book is published by Covenant Communications, known for catering to the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. There is nothing more than chaste embracing, hand holding, and a couple of somewhat intense smooches.

For a delightful, easy read, I would recommend this book. The only reason it took me more than a few days? I was listening to it on CD audiobook in my car on my way back and forth to work lol

This book was just okay for me. It was pretty cheesy and very predictable. And I wouldn’t really call Abby a “spy” because she did about two “spy-like” things. It was set in the late 1700s on the verge of the revolutionary war, which was an interesting time period. The story just didn’t work well for me. It did get a little more interesting in the second half when Abby went to live with her “aunt and uncle” in Boston. But if you like cheesy regency romance books (think Sarah Eden-ish) then you’d probably like this one too! I liked some things about it, but it was just a little too cheesy and predictable and things worked out a little too easily. All well.
