Lawrence Wright’s exposé portrays one of the most controversial religious movements in the twentieth Scientology.
The Church of Scientology is a religious organization founded by L. Ron Hubbard in the mid twentieth century that represents itself to be a path to personal empowerment and improvement. Hubbard’s absolute control, the extreme secrecy maintained within the organization, and the tendency to charge large sums of money for services have led many to call Scientology a cult and a scam. Before dismissing the Church of Scientology altogether, Wright argues, it is important to consider the incredible influence it has had on hundreds of thousands of logical, rational people; people who have dedicated their lives to the singular purpose of supporting and advancing Scientology.
Wright’s balanced and remarkably in-depth examination of the organization – its founder, its beliefs, its people, and its legacy – demonstrate the complexity of the organization. Much of the church is based on the charisma and story of founder L. Ron Hubbard, who claimed to have discovered the secrets of the universe and of human nature through scientific investigation.

This was a good book. It should frighten you that an organization with this much money is able to infiltrate and sue the federal government to accomplish their goals. Just think. A billion dollar organization that pays no taxes. Wish I could get away with that.
Being a person who never grew up with any sort of religious influence I've recently found the study of it to be exceedingly facinating. This book was hard to put down as the practice of Scientology is very secretive. The beginnings of many new religions are based in one man's need for power, money, and control. Scientology is definitely at the top of the list. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to hear the first hand experiences of those who survived and escaped this organization.
