Dungeons and Dating #4

Constitution Check: Dungeons and Dating, Book 4

Rate this book
One night was all Kelly promised. One night was all Tabby offered. And yet one night wasn’t nearly enough…

Kelly Hernandez is on the mend. After the loss of her girlfriend to a car accident, everyone expects her to be destroyed. The worst part is—she isn’t, and the guilt plagues her more each day. All she’s looking for is a little distraction, something to take her away from herself, even if it’s only for a spell.

Tabby Reynolds is on the prowl, searching for her flavor of the night. Everyone sees the roller derby stud, not the geeky accountant who secretly wants a relationship. However, when she spots Kelly by her lonesome at the bar, some flirtation turns into one hot as hell encounter in the back alley.

Except Kelly and Tabby run in the same circles, and all too fast, they see each other again and then again, until they both cave to their desires. Casual and easy—that’s what they agree on. However, when Tabby tears her ACL, taking her out of roller derby, the relationship between them starts to deepen beyond what either of them planned. However, the past trauma Kelly’s running from and Tabby’s growing insecurities might cold snap any chance of something real before it can bloom.

I really liked seeing both Kelly and Tabby find themselves again after such traumatic relationships. Both are wonderful girls and they found their sun after such severe storms. It was really a great story!

Rating: 4.5/5

I really, REALLY enjoyed this book! I've previously read another in this series, Strength Check, and I think both might be one of my favorite contemporary romance novels. The central thread for all of these books is the Tabletop Tavern, a Dungeons and Dragons themed bar where one of the main characters in each book works.

As an avid roller-skater, I connected with Tabby's love of derby. I got a great sense of Kelly's personality too, though, and appreciated how the storyline treated her problems. Kelly's involvement with Tabletop showed a beautiful, healing, and inclusive community that felt borderline therapeutic to read about.

Although the storyline hit on some rather sensitive issues, it did so with grace. I wouldn't consider this a heavy read by any means- it's also full of geeky references and playful banter- but I want to note that, because it made the story feel really meaningful to me.

I'm now a huge fan of McIntyre's work and looking into reading the other books in the series as well! I absolutely, without a doubt recommend this book!!

We love a good sapphic slow burn here. And this is the slowest of burns. We've got a hookup with no strings attached between two women who both have reservations and hold ups regarding romantic relationships who find what they were both seeking in the other.

We have Kelly who is working through her lack of grief after the death of her abusive girlfriend. It's only been a few months and all of her friends think that she should be mourning because they didn't know the true nature of their relationship, but Kelly is determined to move forward except she thinks that she is not relationship material. She ends up looking for a one-night stand to ring in the new year and in walks Tabby.

Tabby is Butch roller derby extraordinaire with a secret geeky side. Tabby is known as a womanizer and never settles down but she is unexpectedly comfortable with Kelly and when they propose a standard hookup with no strings attached, Tabby jumps on it. The only issue here is that Tabby secretly longs for a romantic relationship. She wants to be wife material but all of her past partners have shown her that she isn't worthy of long term. Tabby has some obstacles to overcome involving emotional and verbal abuse from her brother as well as some biphobia within the queer community.

When I say this book is a slow burn I mean it's a slow slow slow burn in the aspect of romance. Sexually, I'm pretty sure they hook up within the first 10% of this book and there's a hefty amount of sex. I don't read as many sapphic explicit books but there were some very creative encounters 😂🔥🔥

This is the fourth book in the series but you definitely don't need to read the previous books. I have only read the third book and I really liked that one as well. I will eventually read the first and second books, probably, but this honestly almost reads as a stand alone. The author does a great job of reintroducing characters that have shown up in the past so you don't really feel left out but it also isn't hitting over the head with who these people are.

CW for biphobia, homophobia, emotional and verbal abuse, physical abuse, domestic partner abuse, a death of a partner, divorce, hospital visit, medical injury, explicit sex

Second read through on audio: again was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this one. Especially on audio and immediately after the previous book in the series. I definitely recommend if you enjoy this author and sapphic romances!

I wasn’t sure going into this book how I would like it. This is only my second FF story while I mainly read MM but honestly, this book blew me away. The raw emotion and turmoil that both of these MCs showed throughout this book was heartbreaking. You’ll need tissues to get through the terrible things that Kelly has experienced.

Kelly and Tabby start out as a one-night stand but it quickly moves on from that. They just seemed to get each other right from the beginning and were exactly what the other one needed. We’ve seen Kelly through all of the past books and we get a glimpse that something is not right with her relationship. She’s so lucky to have found Tabby.

Tabby had a lot of growing to do in this book as well especially after losing one of the biggest comforts for her. She learned how to be herself and not hide away the parts that she thinks no one will like. I would have liked to see a little bit more closure with her parents at the end but not a big deal.

There was some angst and miscommunication in this book which obviously gets resolved but it’s not a quick thing.

Again the found family at Tabletop Tavern is awesome. It was a little harder in this one as they didn’t know what Kelly was going through but still tried their best to be supportive. I loved how welcoming they were of Tabby right off the bat. Their D&D games are absolutely hilarious and I really have no idea how Roxie deals with this bunch!!!

This book can be read as a stand-alone, however, I highly encourage you to read the rest of the books first to really get to know Kelly and her situation a bit. We see Tabby a bit in prior books but not much. The next book is about Eli and Arjun and I am so excited for this one. I love a story with good banter!

CONSTITUTION CHECK is the fourth book in the Dungeons and Dating series, and it's time to have your heart pummelled. Both Kelly and Tabby deserve so much and, together, they've found it, but will they realise it?

We knew something was going on with Kelly but to find out the details? Harsh! No one should have to deal with anything like Nat was dishing out, and her mother was just as bad. And then there's Tabby's brother and other as*hole members of the family. Every 'joke', every innuendo, they all slide beneath the armour and hurt.

The Tabletop Tavern family are there for Kelly, and Eli is there for Tabby. I want more from him, but he's the next one so I'll wait patiently. Seeing both of these women learn and grow, both together and separately, was brilliant. Both of them hurting for similar reasons - reasons they could empathise with and different enough so they could provide support without drowning in their own misery.

This was a brilliant addition to the series that I absolutely loved. I can't recommend this highly enough but, please, start from book one. You're really missing out if you don't.

Kelly isn’t looking for a relationship, Tabby is the Queen of one night stands. Or at least that is what they both tell themselves. There is such a connection between Kelly & Tabby, an honesty they don’t have anywhere else. But letting themselves trust in their connection is so hard for both of them. Their story is so fantastic as they both learn to trust themselves and each other.

I would round down to 3.5 stars overall!

Kelly has recently escaped an abusive relationship as her girlfriend died in a car crash – but her friends don’t know that it was abusive. Tabby is a roller derby enthusiast and secret nerd who desperately wants to be in a relationship but keeps having one night stands instead. They hook up on New Years’ Eve and then find themselves falling into each other again… and again… and again.
Overall, this was a fine romance novel; I enjoyed this but found it a bit of a slog at times. Some of the writing about their emotional baggage was a bit heavy-handed at times and they seemed to have fundamentally similar emotional issues. I also found the miscommunications and set-up a bit too heavy-handed; they agreed to be friends with benefits and call it off if they caught feelings, but it was obvious they already liked each other romantically at that point, so the agreement didn’t ring true. This might be a personal preference as I am not a huge romance reader – I tend to intersperse my romance reading with sci-fi, fantasy, and YA, so I find some romance conventions a little jarring.
I have not read any of the other books in the series before this, but of course it stood by itself just fine! I honestly would have enjoyed more focus on the board game café setting and the Dungeons and Dragons group, but nerdiness and gaming were definitely a clear thread throughout the book.
I enjoyed Tabby’s arc more than Kelly’s, probably just because I found her a more relatable character. The side characters felt a bit flat and as if they were just there to advance the romantic arc, but I think if I had read the previous books about them, I would feel more like they were fleshed out.
A major theme throughout the book was being true to yourself and standing up for yourself – ultimately, Kelly’s arc was about finding self-love and hope after her abusive relationship, while Tabby’s was about reconnecting with buried parts of herself and asserting boundaries with family members. Both of these themes will likely resonate with queer readers, especially gender-non-conforming women (as they did for me!).
Overall, I would recommend this as a fun-but-sometimes-angsty read for someone who likes romance novels, especially if they also like table-top games, butch/femme relationships, and a good dash of hot sex on the side.

Constitution Check is the fourth book is this brilliant series by Katherine McIntyre who focuses on different queer couples per book but who work or are known by those working at the Table Top Tavern, a gaming cafe in San Fransisco.
Kelly is three months on from the death of her girlfriend and struggling with feelings of guilt, shame and relief. There's a lot of emotional baggage that is hidden behind her bubbly personality but Tabby, her New Year's hookup, is drawn in from the moment she spots her sat at the bar. Tabby has her own things going on with her brother getting married but that's not been a positive relationship in years along with not sharing her true self with those around her.
For what is meant to be casual, these two have an immediate strong connection. What they share is hot and sexy, throughout the book but they also show the other the type of person that they long for. That's hard for both of them to accept, though, with recent experiences causing them to doubt themselves and what others see in them. It's a really emotional journey for both characters and for the reader. Tabby's came as a surprise and I love that we get to see the softer side behind what she shows the outside world and Kelly is the perfect balm for her. For Kelly, there's only so long she can go before everything she's been pushing down for years will explode out of her. Her friends have been a wonderfully supportive group since her girlfriend died but, when they don't know the whole story, it's impossible to lean on them in the way she needs. An outsider is perfect to help with that, even though there were never supposed to be feelings involved for either woman.
I loved this from the start. Kelly and Tabby's strength shines through with what they have both had to endure, Katherine's writing really drawing you into their experiences and the mental challenges they face, as well as the intensity of the relationship that develops between them. I'd recommend reading the series in order, just for knowing the other people from the friendship group but it can be read as a standalone.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I have been a huge fan of Katherine McIntyre's Dungeons and Dating series since the first one. The variety of LGBTQ+ ships and characters. The found family. The absolutely lovable nerds. They all hit the spot for me. I was therefore unsurprised to love this one. What I was surprised by, though, was how much this book just SPOKE to me and how it turned out to be the book I needed.

This book starts a few months after the death of Kelly's ex-girlfriend. Its New Years Eve and Kelly is looking for a physical escape for one night. She finds it in Tabby, a butch woman with a reputation for being the love 'em and leave 'em type - exactly what Kelly is looking for. But the world is small and the two of them have a lot of mutual friends - particularly due to the fact that Tabby is on the same roller derby team that featured heavily in book one.

The relationship between Tabby and Kelly starts out as purely physical - and I think my Kindle wanted to explode a few times from just how hot it was. But it quickly turns into more than just mutual stress relief. Tabby and Kelly get to know one another and find out how much their broken pieces fit together.

This is a book about healing the hurts of the past. It is a book about scarred souls finding love and getting the happily ever after that they both deserve. It is a book of unconditional acceptance. Every single part of this book - it just hit. The relationship was believable and well paced. I wished there was more communication at times between Tabby and Kelly, but the way they turned physical every time things started getting a bit too emotional? I liked it. It felt real, like two people who want to say something but don't have the words and use action to both show and distract. It didn't feel like there was a lack of communication for the sake of drama.

There are some trigger warnings you need to heed for this book, including death of a partner (off page) and emotional abuse (mostly off page). There's a list of triggers in the book, so make sure to check those out before committing to the story. But then, read it. Because this was easily my favorite book in what is already one of my favorite series.

** DISCLAIMER: I recieved an advance copy of this book from GRR and am voluntarily leaving my review. **

Thank you to GayRomanceReviews and the author for an eARC of this book.

This was a really sweet sapphic romance and I really enjoyed it. I am someone who love board game cafes and table top games, so a romance with a main character that works at a board game cafe and a nerdy love interest was everything I hoped for.

I loved seeing Kelly and Tabby as they had a random meeting on New Years Eve, and slowly their time together grew into something else. It was heartbreaking to see Kelly's inner struggle with her friends and family, while navigating her own complicated feelings. I loved how the information about Kelly's past, and Tabby's past, was given to us in small pieces as the story went on and as the two of them got closer to each other.

I would definitely read the other books in this series, but it was so sweet to see this found family group together and how they supported and cared for each other. I really, really liked this story and all the ways that the friends and sports teams supported the people they loved and cared for. It was so lovely to see both Kelly and Tabby grow to accept love from the people around them.

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

This is book number 4 in the Dungeons and Dating series and I have to say I have loved every one so far. The series is centred on a group of people who run a business called the Tabletop Tavern and have come together through their love of board games, particularly Dungeons and Dragons.

Each book focuses on different characters and their love life and life in general. This book focuses on Kelly who is trying to get over a domestically violent relationship that ended with the death of her then-girlfriend and Tabby who has never felt any good for anybody.

Katherine is an absolute wizard with words and you get a clear understanding of what each character is going through. She tackles the tougher subjects abuse/homophobia/grief etc in such a delicate but powerful way. It is a pleasure to read even though some of it is heart-breaking.

I 100% recommend reading not just this book but the whole series. Fantastic Katherine.

Constitution Check is the fourth book in Katherine McIntyre’s Dungeons and Dating series, and while I think there are hints that all isn’t well in Kelly’s relationship in the previous book, having not read it, I had no problem falling into this story. Constitution Check is a charming, hurt-comfort story with enough angst to make the characters relatable and sympathetic in their personal journeys, while not reveling in their suffering. Both women are stunners who hide a wealth of pain from others (and themselves) behind disarming flirtatious mannerisms, bravado, and cultivated aesthetics. The pair are super steamy together, but the way they seem to instinctively feel safe enough to be vulnerable with one another and trust in that acceptance little by little is even better.

I loved this book! I am a huge fan of this series anyway and wish I had a place to go like the Tabletop Tavern. This group of found family/best friends is simply one of the best. Kelly has been a character I wanted to get to know for a bit. Her late girlfriend really did a number on her and it takes her most of this book for her to work her stuff out. And Tabby…she is just awesome. This big loud and proud butch lesbian has a heart of gold and her family just doesn’t appreciate her enough. Neither does Kelly at first. But these two have chemistry and a connection that won’t be denied. I also love how the others at the tavern welcome Tabby into their group. These folks really are the best. I loved watching these two. I think Tabby is one of my favorite characters so far.

Fair warning, the backstories of both characters aren't pretty... Kelly was in an abusive relationship and Tabby has had to deal with a homophobic family all her life... but when they get together it's a beautiful thing and a pleasure to read....

Having followed the entire Dungeons and Dating series, and seeing the hints that were dropped about Kelly's relationship with her girlfriend throughout the series, you know that there's a hurt/comfort element going to be present in this story, but it's done so well that it's not glaringly obvious, even to the main characters and that's what I love about Katherine McIntyre's stories - they are both subtle and obvious, loud and quiet.... and it just keeps pulling you back into the story.

Every book set in the world of Tabletop Tavern makes me like the group of friends/chosen family that inhabit it that much more. They’re supportive and kind and good for each other, and I can’t get enough of them. This is Kelly and Tabby’s story, and they’re both beautifully drawn characters. There’s powerful chemistry between them, emotional as well as physical, and a connection with great potential, but they both have obstacles to overcome and baggage to work through as well. They’re both easy characters to want the best for, and I only got more invested as the story went on. Well worth a read.

This was my first read in this series despite owning the other books. It's also my first time listening to an FF romance read by an American and I will probably stick to reading them from now on. I'm not saying the narrator did a bad job, she did a great job, it just wasn't for me.
The story was good, though at times I found their internal dialogue a bit repetitive. These two made a great couple they just needed to communicate better and learn to trust others with the loads they were carrying.
I'd have liked to have seen a bit more in a couple of scenes, especially the wedding scene, I would have liked to have seen how that played out.
The topic of domestic abuse was done well and I really felt for Kelly and all she had been through.
I look forward to reading the previous books in the series and meeting the side characters properly.

This book carries two very important messages as well as being a sweet romance. The first message is why Kelly felt only relief when her girlfriend got killed in an accident and how we can talk ourselves into believing things aren’t as bad as we know they are.
The second was that if we hear enough put downs, jabs and insults we not only believe they’re true but our behaviour changes to make them real.
Two really good and important things to read about and think about.
This book might sound heavy but it’s really not. It’s got 2 cute mc’s and the rest of the games crew.

I am in love with this series! And Tabby and Kelly are the best yet. Both women are suffering from being in situations where they have been made to feel that they are not enough. Tabby because her muscular body and geeky interests don't align with her family's idea of feminine and Kelly because her late ex was abusive and broke her down. Kelly decides to start the new year by finding a woman to hook up with and distract her from dealing with her lack of guilt for not mourning her ex. The chemistry these women have is fire! And it was rewarding to watch them grow together.

I haven't read a lot of FF books, but this book blew me away. This is a first-time author for me and I loved getting to know the characters. This can be read as a stand-alone from the others in the series, even though I did go back and read her previous books.

I was hooked with this one from the start. While we learned about Kelly's grief and Tabby's trying to find herself, I found myself in both of these characters. I really enjoyed this book and hope to look for me from this author.

This was an absolutely delightful geeky book! The characters are so well written and I love how Kelly’s grief is handled. It’s not a normal response and that’s okay. Found family is a huge favorite of mine and this just hit all the right buttons. It’s part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. But why not enjoy the whole series?

This book - this whole series in fact - has been really important to me. Katherine McIntyre is a fantastic writer and she’s helped me so much on my own journey of self discovery. Kelly and Tabby are flawed, imperfect and so incredibly real and that’s what makes them so special. I’m so very glad this series isn’t complete yet - I can’t wait for the next one!

Loved absolutely everything about this one, the characters of Kelly and Tabby, the roller derby background (how I used to love to watch that on Saturday's on TV as a kid), the way the author handled Kelly's complicated grief and the ebb and flow of that and their relationship which starts with the intention of keeping things casual and quickly turns into so much more.

Kelly has lost her girlfriend in a car accident and she knows she should be mourning but she is not. She feels guilty for feeling that and she is about to meet Tabby who is a star in the roller derby but no one sees the other part of them. They all want one night but it may just become so much more. What is going to happen with them? Will it be a new love for them both? See how they will get on
