The Harlequin Crew #0.5

Devil's Pass: A Sinners' Playground Prequel Novella: A Harlequin Crew Novella, Book 1

Rate this book
Ten years ago, The Harlequin Boys broke my heart.

I thought my life was complete with them at my side, the five of us against the world, having each other’s backs no matter what the cost.

I’d fight for them until my dying breath.

It’s just a shame they didn’t feel the same.

Once upon a time, my imperfect world shone bright with the light of four boys I would have killed for.

This is the story of how they destroyed me.

This is a 45k prequel novella to the Harlequin Crew series. These books have dark themes, violence, criminals, gangs, and an enemies to lovers romance that will make your heart pound, break it a little, and then crush it beneath the boots of four black hearted men who our girl might just fall for anyway.

This book was unfortunately by far my least favorite by these authors.
I didn't like any of the characters especially Rogue (she was such an annoying and arrogant person). However I will continue with this series.
To summarize the book it is a dark romance that is centered around the main characters who are part of a town that has a gang called the Harlequin Crew. Fox and Maverick are the biological and adopted sons of the leader of the Harlequin Crew, a man called Luther, who is the main villain of the story. Chase, who also has a evil father and JJ are their friends. All of them are in love with Rogue (and I can't see why this is the case at all). All of these characters, especially the main main characters are so flat. The twisted sisters are usually good at character development though so I guess I'll see if they really develop and grow as characters.

I'm glad I read the first book before this one, and I recommend you do the same. I know everybody says to start here, but I feel the other way around works best. You're more invested in the story and things just hit you harder.

They keep adding easter eggs from other series and I love that.

BASIC FACTS:
Pages: 123
My rating: 4
Genre: RH Contemporary, Gang
Themes: Gang, getting to know Rogue and the Harlequin boys
Protagonist Ages: 16-17
Pacing: slow story telling
Plot Rating: 4

I liked the insight how this story begins and who Rogue, Fox, Rick, JJ and Ace were as teenagers. A time were they were more carefree and not so much broken. Even though they had issues with their parents or foster home they had hopes and dreams. At the end we learn how hope and dreams were crushed out of them. I liked the slow pace of the story very much. It has an unhurried feel to it. The author take their time with the story and with doing this the reader gets good insight into the main characters.

I enjoyed reading Devil’s Pass and that was kind of unexpected.

It really doesn’t matter the length of the tale these authors weave together because it’s always magic and will take over your life. This is novella length story that works as a prequel for the Herlequin Crew series and lays some hella groundwork. After only 150 pages this is already a series I am dying to binge. How this novella had my emotions all in a twist, caused emotional outbursts, hell, even brought tears to my damn eyes a followed by bloodthirsty rage I cant wait to extinguish with some sweet sweet revenge. The story packs a punch right into the gut as you witness these characters lives, relationship and most of all their never-ending friendship completely shatter. It’s always nice to have true & honest friends you can call to help you in an emergency night or day. Unfortunately for this group, actions have severe and heartbreaking consequences. So glad this series will be completed one month from now because I’m already feeling the strain of not starting the next book and I only need to wait a few hours till morning. But then again who needs sleep😴😴😴🥱🤔

Well I'll be damned. I'm hooked! This was bloody amazing.

The Devil’s Pass is a novella in the A Harlequin Crew Series. It is set 10 years before the first book in the series - Sinners' Playground. It's where we meet Rogue and her guys Chase, Fox, JJ and Maverick.

All these kids have rough lives, but they have each other and that's all that matters to them. They're chasing the future with a gleam in their eye. But then something happens and suddenly all they know is hurt.

Fresh, unique and painfully affecting the feelings.

Devil's Pass is designed to make an impression.

This is the prequel to the series setting the scene and showcasing the events leading up to Rogue's exile from sunset cove. It has multiple POVs and really gives an insight into the early dynamic and Rouge’s connection to all of her boys Fox, Maverick, Johnny James and Chase it definitely provided me with a deeper understanding of the boy's actions that fateful night.

I loved getting a window into their younger psyches before they were sworn into the gang and evolved into the men they are today. I totally recommend reading this before embarking on the series as a whole it definitely added a whole new dimension and much deeper understanding regarding the transpired events.

I've learned to read the novellas for series, they have such valuable information. This told us all about Rogue's relationship with the guys and how things went terribly wrong. I like seeing how the guys are as teens before they grow up to be big bad gang members. They're just trying to survive the bad circumstances of their childhoods and I'm looking forward to them taking control of their lives and getting away from their bullies and abusers.

I'm not a huge fan of the MFC being named Rogue, plus two of the guys are Maverick and Fox. I know we want them to be cool and unique, but can we not have regular names sometimes?

“Fox, JJ, Maverick and Rogue. Especially Rogue. She was everything. She had always been everything. The centre of our world here in Sunset Cove.”

Four teenage boys and their BFF girl friend Rogue have a friendship so tight and secure, their bond with each other is friendship goals.
Sometimes friendship that you think are unbreakable can shatter overnight.

What happens when your friend gets nearly raped and she ends up killing her rapist? Said rapist is part of a gang. If there’s a witness and that rat narks to the notorious gang leader that rules the town?!
Shit goes pretty haywire when one of the boys in the friendship is the gang leaders son.
These four boys love Rogue and are willing to kill and die for her but unfortunately they must shatter their relationship in order to save her life.

Left her alone to fend for herself you can only imagine the bitterness and hatred that she brews her mind against the people she called her family and her best friends.

This was a lovely prequel to the book Sinners Playground.
I sense a bully romance, enemies to lovers, and definitely reverse harem! This prequel had some pretty dark moments so I’m definitely excited to read Sinners Playground!

Sixteen year old Rogue’s miserable life is only made bearable by the four boys she calls her own, the Harlequin boys: Fox, Maverick, Chase, and JJ. Living in a horrible group home in a crime-ridden city, Rogue and her boys love each other to the heavens and back and vow to be together - always.

But when Rogue fights off a would-be rapist - who also happens to belong to the Harlequin gang that rules the area - she ends up killing him and then calling her boys out of desperation.

The four boys’ only thoughts are of protecting Rogue at all costs … until they are forced to make a choice none of them saw coming and would change the fates of all of their lives.

This novella is the prequel to Sinner’s Playground, the first installment in a brand new series from the amazing sisterly writing duo of Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti.

Every book by these ladies is stellar, and this delightful taste of Rogue and her boys does not disappoint!

I LOVED it. The writing was tight, the characters fully developed, and the action non-stop. The four boys are all hot as hell, which is to be expected, and Rogue is a kick-butt chick in the making.

What I loved about this novella is that it sets up the stage for the novel perfectly. Everyone is young and innocent - virgins, in fact. All four boys have always been in love with Rogue, but she has never even noticed. The air of waning childhood was executed beautifully, as was the climax of the novella that shoved all five of them over the cliff and into adulthood overnight.

This book takes place 10 years prior to Sinner’s Playground and is critical to the full arc of the story. So don’t wait. Go read it today!

Rogue is an orphan living in a shitty foster care, where her only relief is sneaking out to her boys. They are the Harlequin boys, the ones chosen to be next generation of the crime organization The Harlequin Crew. But first and foremost, they are her boys, and she is their girl. However, over a course of 2 days, terrible actions and consequences wrenches them apart while breaking their hearts brutally.

Trigger Warning~ strong language, attempted sexual assault, mature themes, blood, gore, violence, death, physical and emotional abuse.

Wow, what a ride this was! Miscommunications, unfortunate luck, and love as its whole theme. Usually, a couple has all kinds of relationship issues. But imagine 5 teenager's - each from a broken house, together! There's bound to be some kind of mess up. From the very beginning, the miscommunication starts, though they are in love with each other (the boys in love with Rogue and Rogue in love with her boys, and the boys love each other like brothers). I loved how comfortable they were with each other. I wonder how they all became friends in the first place, since it isn't mentioned. Just that they had been friends since a very young age.

The novella was in first person point of view and in each one's perspective. However, I think the audiobook should have made the voice of each character clear. Like, if Rogue's chapter is being narrated, then the voices of the boys should have been played by the male narrator and if the chapter was in boys'perspective, then Rogue's part by female narrator. Though, I guess, this is a more tedious job.

The world building and the plot are beautifully built. The characters are epically messed up, which is bad for them, but good for us readers cause it creates more angst - just kidding. It is kinda stressful when the characters are so messed up, but good plot and character development makes up for it.

I'm very excited to see where this series will go. Currently, my favourite Harlequin is Maverick. Onto the next one now!

I'm on a mission to read the backlist from these authors. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I didn't get wrapped up in any of these characters, really. Maybe it's because they are younger and come across as wanna be tough guys but are actually really immature on the page? Could be because it's a novella and there just isn't enough time to develop character growth? Who knows...

Whatever it is, I'll still be pushing through. This is the last world I need to read before getting to the new series. And these authors always seem to through easter eggs from other series in all their books. This one was of course no different because there is a reference to the ZA in this one :)

Well this was a lovely surprise novella. It astounds me the writing these sisters achieve without regurgitating the same old. Heck no, not these writers. Fresh storyline, intriguing characters, delicious dynamics. This novella is set 10 years prior to the up and coming first book of a new series and by gosh am I desperate for more. The sisters always manage to keep you hooked and plead like Oliver for some more please. Rogue, what can I say, I am excited to see how she flourishes and gets her revenge, the boys have a lot to make up for. Although in their defence it was for her own safety. But they didn't need to be so cruel! Roll on book 1, I'm salivating while waiting even though I know they will rip my heart out, stomp on it and shove it right back in there. Just call me a glutton for punishment!

Devil's Pass is the novella within The Harlequin Crew series. In it, you get to know the entire back story of what happened before Rogue was forced to leave town. At first, you can see that they all pretty much like one another. Until they have to break her heart and make her think she's been played.

Besides that, I feel like all their problems could be solved if they just freaking talked. With Chase assuming the absolute worst and not asking just pissed me off. Then with how they treated Rogue to get her to leave also pissed me off. It just goes to show that men ain't shit and they deserve everything that's coming to them.

Now I'm ready for the second book in this series.

Honestly I have no idea how the ladies do it, another series I am desperate to read after reading a couple of teasers and then to surprise us with a novella introducing us to the characters before its released.

In 40k words you are already invested in the characters and have an insight to who they are. Incredible.

I cannot wait for The Harlequin boys series 🥰

Alexa, play Couple of Kids by Maggie Lindemann.
Seriously, there are so many songs in my playlist that fit perfectly with these books.

🎡 The story 🎡
This story is the prequel to the rest of the Harlequin Crew series, where we meet the main crew and Rogue. We see more of their pasts as children together, and we see what exactly happened for them to hate each other now.

I loved this story. I just can’t help it; I basically love everything that these authors write. They just suck me in, and I can’t put their books down, even if I tried. Since this was a short book, it didn’t take me long at all. I absolutely Even though I knew it was coming, it still broke my heart. I also loved the sneak peek of the next book, definitely my worst nightmare holy crap. The funny thing is that everyone in the Facebook group has been talking about “Fucking Shawn” for a while, and I had no clue what they meant, but now I do lol.

🎡 The characters 🎡
I’m just going to discuss them all in one paragraph, since they’re all connected in this story. First of all, I loved Rogue. She’s such a badass, and I can totally see why all of the guys are madly in love with her. The guys were all so damn great as well, although we didn’t see that much of them yet, I liked what we did see. I loved the fact that we got to read chapters from their point of views as well, since it really did add a lot to the story. I felt so, so bad for all of them when I think I love Maverick the most at this point, because he was just so darn cute, and

🎡 Overall conclusion 🎡
No surprise that I loved this book, just like I pretty much love all of Susanne and Caroline’s books so far. The characters were amazing, and they already have a lot of chemistry, even at this young age. I can’t wait to see where their story will take us!

Hands up! Who read the blur or book 1 and thought paranormal book...she's said grave dirt in her mouth...so para..no! It's not a paranormal book so far. For some reason, I kept wondering when one of them would reveal they were part of the shifters pack or something. Well, don't worry, just because it doesn't contain magic or sci-fi or extra human gifts, does not mean the book isn't good.
This novel is to set up book 1, and it's a strong build. I love the innocence within the troubled teens, just trying to find their way, dealing with some heavy family situations.
Foster care
Parental abuse
Sexual abuse
Poverty related family life
Gangster upbringing
All these and more push them together into a chosen family, and it seems strong... but can it stay that way?
I love the way it's written from all MCs POV...although Chase I connect with the least as he had that fit over what he thought he saw.
But the worst is the ending of this short story. And I have to keep in mind they are 16 - to 17 year olds. Unlike paranormal books, where the having powers and magic comes with more politics to school each other and have intense emotional reactions as they have to be closer to their instincts to be strong in their gifts. This book layers on gang politics and how that structure can force intense emotions in the characters to deal with always being on edge in a world where the big get shot down if they don't pay attention.

OK, rambled again!
Either way, there is no smut, but blossoming urges we all understand as they went through them as teens ourselves. Confusion and body insecurities that come from measuring yourself against others your own age as you grow and battle hormones.

It's worth a read! 3.8 stars

3.25 stars. This was the perfect intro to this series. We get to meet Rogue (FMC) and her men, Maverick, Fox, Chase, and JJ, when they are teenagers. We can see how in love they are with Rogue and how she is with all of them, but no one wants to make a move that risks their friendship. This friendship is the definition of ride or die. They will do anything for Rogue. And I feel so bad for Rogue and Maverick towards the end. Rogue just wants to be with all her boys, and Maverick wants to be with her damned the consequences, while the rest will do whatever it takes to protect her even if that means to stay away. I can’t wait to see their reunion and how their relationship will unfold.

After a day of Rogue and Maverick hanging out, something bad happens to Rogue. All of her men come to her rescue (technically she saves herself), but this is when things start to take a turn. They will have to deal with the consequences of their actions, and it may make or break their relationship with Rogue. Whatever the boys decide will affect Rogue’s relationship with all of them. Will they stay as close as ever or will they drift apart?

Favorite quotes/scenes:

-“Me and the boys would be together forever, it was written into our souls. I couldn't pick between them any more than I could pick between stars in the sky.” (Rogue)

-“She was everything. She had always been everything. The center of our world here in Sunset Cove.” (Chase)

-“Where Rogue was concerned, I’d battle through the nine circles of hell and face the devil himself without a single doubt in my mind.” (Fox)

-“Even if she'd torn my heart from my chest with her fingernails, it would still belong to her. No matter how deeply she ever wronged me.” (Chase)

-“I could do any unthinkable thing for the sake of my girl. And I would do it again and again until she was back in my arms.” (Maverick)

Boy have I loved returning to this series!

I highly recommend starting The Harlequin series by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti (the final book releases at the end of the month btw) by reading this novella.

Also, the audio narration by Bridget and Jake Bordeaux is phenomenal for this series!

Audible review:
I am re listening to this series, as the final book is about to be released. The Harlequin Crew is one of my favorite series by the sister authors, Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti.

This novella is a quick listen and introduces the charcters and the high stakes plot of the series.

This is one of my favorite series with a found family trope. The friendships are amazing and there is lots of light lighthearted comedic moments to lighten the tough subject matter of these characters broken home Iives and Sunset cove's gang ruled streets.

The performances of narrators, Bridget and Jake Bordeaux, is excellent and I can't wait to continue listening to the rest of the series

I'm not usually someone that reads novellas or prequels. It's not that I don't like them, but I much prefer full length books.

With that being said though, I did read this one before I started Sinner's Playground, and I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID!!

This novella really sets the stage for the first book in the Harlequin series. We get a good feel for all the characters and how their dynamic works, well, before everything goes to shit that is. Sinner's Playground does touch on a lot of this, but Devil's Pass gives us a little more and really helps to foster that character/reader relationship.

If you are planning on starting the Harlequin Crew series, then I highly recommend that you read this one first. It's not imperative, but it only makes Sinner's Playground that much better.

I. AM. HOOKED.

Get me a one way ticket to Sinner’s Playground.

I can’t WAIT for the first instalment in this series. What an incredible treat to receive an insight into what is to come, by way of a well written, completely addictive novella.

I can’t wait to see how Rogue & her personality have grown over the years, and can only imagine she’ll be another bad ass MC, which I’ve come to expect and love from Caroline & Susanne’s books.

Fox, Rick, Chase and JJ were presented with their different personalities, each as intriguing as each other in their own way.

I laughed out loud and cried. Yes, CRIED from reading a novella: there is a first time for everything. That is how beautifully written this was.

Bring on book 1! Thank you ladies!
