The Sixteenth Need

Rate this book
My sin . . . My addiction . . .

Before Samson McShane, I was merely Sable Cole, the oldest daughter of our town's druggie. Multiple eyes were on me, watching my every action—waiting for me to mess up.

When I met Samson, we couldn't be more different yet he became my escape. He took me out of the protective shell I created for myself and showed me what it meant to be free.

Our lives would drift apart.

I saw him, clashed with him, and loved him sixteen times.

My past should have shown me the error in loving him. It never did.

Samson McShane was my sin and my addiction. He was my sixteenth need.

🆃🅷🅴 🆂🅸🆇🆃🅴🅴🅽🆃🅷 🅽🅴🅴🅳 Is a full length small town romance book by Calia Read. Spoken in 'dual perspectives.' Jumps from 'present to past' HERO: Samson HEROINE: Sable

This book was filled with hours and hours of wanting, needing to get to the end to see how it all unfolded. Until I did. And the tears came freely, their HEA was well deserved, but it was heart wrenching closing that last page and saying goodbye to characters that have a slice of my heart. 🫶🏻

'Sable aged 18' We could all find a small piece of ourselves in Sable, and that's what made her so relatable, being the eldest sibling she had the world on her shoulders, a druggy/drunk of a mother, the siblings (Alba 17, Maren 16 & Lennon 14,) only had each other to reply on when a town had turned their backs on them. The sins of the mother became the girls crosses to bare. Living in a run down trailer, dressing in goodwill clothes, working to just keep the leaky roof over their heads, these siblings were made of tough stuff.

All sable was living for was seeing the trailer park in her rear view mirror as she drove away to college, but leaving her siblings behind was the hardest thing she would ever have to face.

'Sam' This boy knew from the start how special Sable was, it all started when she became his tutor, he had her back throughout, even when he didn't know how bad things were for her he was always her constant. The jock who would take the town on to just protect the girl he had fallen for.

This was so beautifully written, I loved all the characters and pray that we get more of these two as they go onto college and then I hope we get each sisters books, because they too all have a piece of my heart. All the feels!

I need, crave, want more!!

The only small niggle I have with this book is the past and present/ I wish it had've just started from the past and worked up to the present, some parts I just wanted to stay in that present moment into the next chapter but it would flit back to the past. Other than that this book was one of my favourites by this author.

The Sixteenth Need reminded me why I fell in love with this author in the first place. I haven't read a NA romance in a while but she made it so easy to picture this setting and to put myself in these main characters shoes. This was a slow burn coming of age romance that will make you feel all the pain and joys of two people who are trying to figure out this crazy thing called life.

Being the oldest of the Cole sisters, Eighteen year old Sable has always taken care of her younger siblings. Growing up with a mother who's barely present in their lives, Sable along with her sisters have no choice but to step up and fend for themselves in their small gossip talking town. But with a plan to go to college within the next year, nothing and no one is going to get in Sable's way even if your name is Sam.

26421819

Samson has everything going for him. Mr popular, leader of his football team with a loving family behind him. But despite all of that, he's rapidly failing his English class and in order to keep playing the sport that he loves, he's going to need some help. What he wasn't counting on was for that help to come in the form of the most unapproachable girl in his school. Passing his class is going to be hard but winning over Sable Cole? Even harder.

I really liked that this was a slow burn and I enjoyed seeing the little moments between Sam and Sable. There were past and present chapters which at times felt confusing because the present takes place only a year from the past so not much has changed in a sense. I would have loved it more if it had been maybe five years from now and both characters were managing adulthood and the epilogue was years later but that's just me. Aside from that, this was a nice NA romance and if you're a fan of this author, you should definitely give this one a try.

It's been a bit since I have read a book by Calia Read and I am pondering why that is.

The Sixteenth Need was so much more than a second chance romance. This story has so much depth to it, I don't even know where to start.

Calia creates characters that have so many layers to them and you just can't help but love them.

We meet the Cole sisters – Sable, Alba, Marren and Lennon. The Sixteenth Need focuses mostly on Sable and her second chance romance with Samson, but I absolutely love how perfect Calia weaves everyone into this story.

This story is told from both past and present and from Sable and Samson's POV. I enjoyed watching these two grow in so many ways and learning about one another as their story progresses. It is a slow burn, but it absolutely so worth it.

Calia builds the perfect anticipation with every aspect to this story. It all flows seamlessly and comes together beautifully.

I purposely left out all details because this story needs to be read without any knowledge, just like I read it. I promise you won't regret picking this one up.

I love love love Calia Read's books but this was unfortunately, a big miss for me. It felt more like a recollection of events than an actual story.
And the kicker was that it had a "second chance romance" Trope which is my favourite, but I still couldn't get into this story.

Calia read is that one author that I've been obsessed with since reading her first novel. And you wouldn't believe it was her first. So ever since than ive requested to read everything she writes. And i have loved every single one so far. She comes out with just the best unique books ever.

I am so excited for everyone to read this book because it's one of my favorites this year. I've been waiting for this book since she posted about it years ago on goodreads. And once i got it in my hands on it, i went all in. Didn't look back.

This is a sports romance. I dont want to get to much away i say go in blind. Stable comes from a small town with about 1,000. She follows her sisters around the town that has like one bank. Library, which is one of her favorite places because it has air conditioning. But everyone in town gives them dirty looks or stays away from them because of her mom. I feel she is one of the many strong characters that i enjoyed. But other than that i dont wanr to give much away because trust me you want to go in blind

The Sixteenth Need by Calia Reed delivers some real and raw feels. Sable and Sam come from two entirely different sides of society. The misunderstood girl from the wrong side of the track shouldn’t be a match for the golden boy of the small town. But love knows no boundaries. Sable makes my heart hurt for her. This fierce girl is struggling everyday and fighting with her everything to find an escape. Reality has made her a non believer in a fairytale ending but she didn't expect Sam to burge in her tattered life with his charm, sweetness and protectiveness.

Sable and her sisters live in a trashy trailer with their addict mother. The Cole sisters has been given a bad reputation that is completely unfair. She cannot wait till she is in college and can leave the godforsaken small town forever. And no one can distract her. Not even the handsome popular jock Samson McShane. Sam has his work cut out..can he really break her walls?

The focus of this story is Sable and her sisters. It’s truly heartbreaking to see how these young girls have to fight for the simplest things in life. It also makes me sad and angry and super protective. Their bond is special. No two sisters are same. Sable, being the oldest, is the most level headed and practical one. She is a nerd and she hides behind her old clothes. She is a cynical person. Life has made her so. But when someone cares for her, she opens up and we get to see the really sweet and vulnerable girl inside the tough shell. Sam comes from a wealthy and respected family and when she started tutoring him, she thought he will be like any other judgemental guy who believes the nasty rumors. But he is so different. He is like a marshmallow. Well a spicy marshmallow because he is so gorgeous too. I was swooning for the way he cared for her, cherished her and so very patiently, showed her that they are perfect together. It was a case of grumpy heroine and sunshine hero. Sable has the tendency to deflect, avoid and run from any emotionally charged issues. But Sam slowly, oh so slowly, made her fall for him. It was a super slow burn. It was a character driven story where the author goes deep into the layers and so you automatically start feeling their emotions. The writing was beautiful and this won't definitely be my last story from Calia Reed.

Reading this book was such a beautiful rollercoaster of emotions and I can confidently say it’s one of the best romance books I’ve read this year.

I found out about this author through the Surviving Time series, books that I honestly devoured and gave me the rare feeling of needing more, being unable to put it down and even re reading them, that is something that does not happen to me often so I shouldn’t have been surprised when I got the same feeling with The Sixteenth Need. Maybe it’s the way she writes, the way you can relate and root for her characters, I don’t know, but just like her other books, this one captivated me.

Without spoilers of course, the story follows Sable, a girl that is about to get to college and finally get away from the town that have nothing but bad memories, rumours, nasty people and a mother that forced her to grew up too fast for the sake of her family. The only light in this town? Samson, her first love, but at the same time, love that she knows can’t have once she gets away.

Samson is one of the best mmc for my 2023, he is so aware of his mistakes as a child and never tries to sugarcoat them, he grew and mature and became such a kind human. and protects Sable with all his might. He is not the grumpy and dark man people tend to love, he is caring, funny, understanding and full of life, but he knows what he wants, and he calls bulls*it when have to, because his feelings for Sable is the one thing he is sure about, you can see that in all his POVs, which I adored reading, my heart felt heavy but giddy every time he describes what he was feeling.

On the other hand, Sable is so strong, so wise, such a force that wakes up every morning to be the mother her sisters need. She had a difficult life, a difficult childhood and now a difficult reality since she is close to leaving. Can she leave her sisters? Can she starts living her life and thinking about herself? Throughout the whole book I wanted to hug her, I even cried in some parts. I admired her so much and the author made such a good job writing her and describing her thought process in such a complicated situation.

The book was long for a romance? People might say yes, but honestly I could have read so much more about Sable and Sam, I wish I could have a book 2 instead of a stand-alone. The angst, the romance, the tension, the found family… Ah, I wish I can read it for the first time again.

Thank you so much to Calia and her team for the ARC, it was a delight to read and I can’t wait for future releases❤️

I thought I was done with high school romances. I thought there was no way that I could relate as a 30 something year old…. And then Calia Read comes along and writes one that is so addicting that I couldn’t put it down.

It might have been the high maturity level of the characters that allowed me to enjoy this one, but I think overall it was the amazing writing that held me captive. If an author can get me to enjoy something I don’t typically enjoy, then you know they are a skilled writer.

The Plot: Sable and her sisters are well known around town. They are the daughters of a drunk and drug addict and that alone has created their reputation. Samson needs to pass all of his classes in order to keep playing football. Currently, he is failing his English class. The two are forced to interact when Sable becomes Samsons tutor. Eventually, they both realize there is more to one another than the circulating reputations.

I wanted this to the be a 5 so bad but the epilogue kinda didn’t do it for me. Listen we went thru so much with this poor girl and I just wanted to hear that she got her HEA. I guess the author set it up to write more about the other sisters and I just can’t with these types of books. I’m stand-alone all the way and with marriage and babies endings.

Extraordinary and Deeply Moving!

The Sixteenth Need is not only an unexpected slow growth eventually second chance love story between Sable Cole and Samson (Sam) McShane, no, there is so much more. It’s a story written with insight and an intensity that is undeniable, it’s a story that includes the other Cole sisters, Alba, Marren and Lennon in an interrelated meaningful way.

Calia Read magnificently portrays an intricately layered, incredibly touching narrative. The descriptive imagery, sibling love and loyalty despite all the challenges, undeserved obstacles and unwarranted judgment they encounter are impactful and consuming.
The responsibilities that children should not have to face let alone assume in the emotional, physical and psychological absence of a responsible parent are depicted in a realistic manner. I became immersed in a plot that developed seamlessly despite alternating between past and present in dual points of view.

I loved these strong female characters and how they supported each other. They displayed resilience and strength and despite innermost insecurities, Sable being the oldest, displayed perseverance, tenacity, and dignity. She knew she wanted better for herself and her future.

Sam was everything! He was understanding, patient and loving never differentiating the differences in his and Sable’s upbringing.

This story has left an indelible memory on me and is one of my favorite reads of 2023.

I really loved this one. It tells the story of Sable Cole and Samson/Sam McShane. Both are on opposite sides of society. Sable is living in very difficult situation in which she has to grow up and basically be the "adult" for her younger sisters. Sam is a rich, football star and is in major need of help with his grades for English and Sable becomes his tutor. The more they spend with each other, the more they can't deny one another. I think Sam has some great boyfriend goals, he becomes so protective of Sable and her sisters it was so sweet to see the lengths he went through to make sure they're taken care of. I think the past/present chapters I was just getting a bit confused on. I also really didn't expect this to go an emotional route but it does have an hea. I really recommend this one and if it does come to audiobook, I plan on giving it a listen.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

If you grew up as obsessed with Nathan Scott and Haley James Scott from the TV show One Tree Hill as I was- THIS. BOOK. IS. FOR. YOU!

I finished reading this last night and just stared at the wall with tears streaming down my face for a while. (It is a HEA, so they were happy tears, but plenty of sad tears were shed throughout also.) 💜

This was probably my favorite Romance book, ever. The only other competition is Calia's other books.

Not only was this book insanely romantic, angsty, and heart-wrenching, but Calia is so damn funny. I was audibly cackling through the entire book, and this had some tense parts, so the comedic relief was perfect so I didn't just go lay down in the middle of the road like Damon Salvatore.

The banter between FMC Sable and her 3 younger sisters is hilarious, and exactly how I imagine it would be with siblings. Her back and forth quips with 6'5" dreamboat MMC love interest Sam are quick-witted and flirty also.

Sam might be my favorite Calia Read main man, ever. (Do not tell Asa, Beau, Etienne, or Livingston that I said that.)

I hope you'll add this to your TBR because it was truly one of the best books I've read this year.

What to expect:

Sweet with slow burn new adult romance, Sixteenth Need brings you not only Sable and Sam's story, but also the Cole's girls.

Sable, Alba, Maren and Lennon are the Cole sisters. Daughters of a drug addict and alcoholic, they are the perfect target for the town gossips and bullying. But dangit how they make me proud. They held their head high. They hold their sassyness, believe, dignity and ladylike more than all those stuck up small town of Ansett does.

I love how Calia portrayed these girls. How smart and strong they are in living their ever lasting abusive childhood with no existence mother. With daily bullying and name calling. How they struggle to keep their head barely above the water. These girls and their story is what captivate me in this book. Poisedly written, their story could be epic story of life for how real they are.

Is this the same author that wrote king of the south? This book was sloppy. Felt like she threw something together and called it a day. Maren met Sam but then they are introducing Sam to maren a few chapters later. The chapter title says august, they go out to the mound and it’s cool for “late July”
There were also many grammatical errors and sentence structure errors.
This story had promise but it was disjointed. We only go back one year and it’s just like entire year was left out and she gave us a paragraph that sable watched Sam’s life but she denies it to him for so long and also says she doesn’t have a phone to check fb or google. Half the time I was wondering what was going on. We barely got to see them get to know each other. All we know is they fell in love we didn’t get to read about them falling in love. I just really am disappointed in this book. Maybe I just didn’t like sable as a character.

Respectfully, Ms. Read is mother of all mother when it comes to serving angst.

What you can expect..

- Small Town
- Second Chance
- Sports Romance
- Angst
- Happily Ever After
- Complete Stand Alone

This book was so angsty and such a perfect summery romance read. The constant push and pull, and the history between the MCs made it so delicious. I loved both MCs, especially Sable. The rapport between the sisters and their constant bickering was so entertaining. I loved how it also served the ‘found family trope’ as well. Along with that, the epilogue was very cute too. Overall, I really loved and enjoyed it.

Sixteenth Need is a beautiful new adult romance. The storyline follows the love story of Sam and Sable but also her fabulous sisters. The book is set in a small town where the girls because of their alcoholic mother have a reputation. The author did an amazing job showcasing the family dynamics between the sisters and the dysfunctional relationship they have with their mother. I was in pure admiration for the way they handled themselves. Despite numerous provocations they held their heads high never losing their sassyness, their pride or their dignity or hope. Sam was boyfriend goals, the way he fought for and protected them all had me jumping for joy. His love for Sable was beautiful to read and shone through. There are some tough bits in this story that are written with a realism that can't be ignored. A stunning well written book that I recommend you read.

This is one of my favourite books and the hero is one of my favourite books boyfriends of all time. I could not put this down, and when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. I’m a big fan of second chance and small town romances, but I still highly recommend it even if you aren’t. The heroine is strong, sweet, fierce, sassy, she fights for what she believes in and what she wants. She was giving me Fiona from Shameless vibes but different at the same time. I love her sisters and the banter between them. The hero was everything, I love how much he cared about her and protected her from those who hate her family. So many swoon worthy scenes, but there were also sad and funny moments. There was a little bit of a third act breakup/fight, which I normally don’t like, but I thought it added to the story. I highly, highly recommend it.

Tropes: small town, second chance, golden boy, sports romance(ish)

TW: It deals with some serious issues such as a mother who drinks and uses a lot (fairly absent mother), issues at home/bills due to shortage of money

Calia Read is and will always be a go to author for me. The way she brings stories to life is one of my favorite things. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to punch something and also had my heart broken a few times during this book but by the end there was the breath of fresh air called hope.

My hope is now that the rest of those Cole girls get their hopeful and happy ending.

This book is so different from what this author usually writes, and it was so good. Small town romance with a family of sisters that will steal your heart for very different reasons. They are all very different in personalities but share a common love for each other that makes this story so so good. I’m hoping there is more from this family!

This book was everything! Calia’s books always make you feel like you are part of it. You feel for the Cole girls. They are so strong, that’s all they have ever known. I can’t imagine what they went through and how people talked about them behind their back.
Sam was so much and more! He was so calm, loving and funny! His family was great.
The dynamic of the story is something I have never read before. I highly recommend it!

description

La amistad de Sable y su amigo (olvide el nombre);
El romper la amistad de toda la vida de Sam;

I had high hopes for this book. Everything I've read by this author I've loved, but The Sixteenth Need just didn't do it. It's told in duel timelines, but the "past" is just over a year before the "now" and it just doesn't work. There wasn't enough growth for the characters, imo, to justify that sort of storytelling.

Sable was pretty much a pushover who never really grew a backbone. The one moment she has to confront her drug addict, abusive mom and she doesn't. I get that that's probably realistic, but at the same time it's a book and it would have been great for character growth. Sable's sisters were a range of naive to selfish disguised as tough. No one seemed to understand why she was trying so hard and they would often complain about helping out with bills. There was so much potential but it never reached the level it could have been. I would read a book about the other sisters and see if they change, but I'm not sure if I would finish it if they stayed as stagnant as Sable.

Sam felt forgettable. He only stood up for her when he wanted to get in her pants. That wasn't the stated reason, but it was obvious. He has his perfect family that he's constantly complaining about even after knowing about Sable's home life. His sister was cute, but it felt like she was only there as a way to get Sable to be around Sam without looking like she was trying. Sam had some character growth, but like the others the potential fell flat.

I hate when the novel starts and the characters already have a story. It’s also dual timeline? I hate those also, why not tell all the story from beginning to the end, because even the reason they separated wasn’t that big of a deal, so no need of groveling whatsoever. Also the slowest start ever, with all kind of scenes that don’t say anything.

With literal tears running down my face, I can't say enough about this beautiful book. The Sixteenth Need is a bit different from the usual that Calia Read delivers but still contains all the feels she has become known for and then some. Read tells the poignant tale of the four Cole sisters, treated as if they are dirt under their small town's shoes, and their struggles to survive despite everything and everyone against them. Each has a very distinctive personality, but this book is oldest sister Sable's story and the boy who would be her ultimate savior in more ways than one.

Told in both alternating POVs and also a year or so in the past and then the present, we get the full story of how Sable and football star Samson McShane met and became more than friends. Their start was rocky as the smart Sable became Sam's tutor in English Lit. Never knowing just how Sable would react or if everything he's ever heard about her and her family was to be believed, it was a bit of a struggle to figure out a rhythm between them that would benefit them both. But with time, it was truly sweet how Sam became a protector of sorts for the beleaguered Sable as he gets to know her as much as she'll allow.

I felt exhaustion from watching Sable hold her family together as her mother spiraled further into drugs, alcohol and nasty men. My heart broke for her and her sisters, as they bore witness to a decrepit home that only continued to crumble, doing anything they could to survive. I was in awe, and damn it if I'm not tearing up again, at how they fought like typical sisters yet knew when to do what was necessary even if meant they were barely scraping by. Sable was the true mama bear but Alba, who disguises her hurt and frustration with snark, and Marin as the calm and organized one, would do anything to protect youngest sister Lennon from seeing just what dear old mom was up to. To say what they endured was heartbreaking could very be the understatement of the year.

And in the end, it's Sam, that cocky, gorgeous and beautiful man who ultimately sees more than those Cole girls would want him to and at the same time becomes more to them than they ever thought possible. That the boy on the right side of the tracks would love a girl from the wrong side is almost an impossible notion. But he ignores all the whispers and cruelty the Cole girls have to endure and simply loves Sable with all his heart no matter what. His family is beyond wonderful with sweet Audree a great distraction when everything just seems so hard. But perhaps with all that Sable and her sisters have had to deal with, that shining light in the form of Samson McShane is something they finally deserve.

Calia Read portrayed Sable perfectly. A girl who has had to grow up way too fast, she still has all the insecurities and doubts any 18-year-old even with the best childhood would have. And then there's Sam. What can I say that I know will be said over and over by readers near and far? That he's a keeper. And a swoon-worthy charmer. A regular boy who became a man who would stop at nothing and no one to make sure the love of his life was able to fulfill her own dreams when all she did was make sure her loved ones got theirs. That Sam loves with all he has and Sable is one lucky girl to have him in her corner. And most importantly, that every single touching gesture, whether big or small, was enough to give Sam's girl hope when that was always in very short supply.

I know I've rambled way too long but just know that The Sixteenth Need hit me in the feels something fierce and I'm not ready to let these characters go just yet. With that being said, each of Sable's sisters undoubtedly has a story to tell so here's hoping more is to come from the Cole crew. Another winner from a favorite author, I happily give this latest creation from Calia Read a huge 5++ stars!

The Sixteenth Need was a beautifully written story about sisterhood, resilience, hope and love.

It is dual POVs of the main characters, Samson McShane and Sable Cole and there are some great tropes like, opposites attract, a second chance and small town romance. I definitely recommend checking the content and trigger warnings before reading just in case.

The story has two timelines, where the past were in Samson’s POV and the present were in Sable’s POV, which I really enjoyed. The writing and overall premise was heartbreakingly beautiful and so well done. A lot of Sable’s fears, heartache and doubts throughout the story were so realistic and honest as well.

While the story focused a lot on the relationship of Sam and Sable, it also focused on the hardships and struggles Sable and her sisters have had to go through. I have to say that my favorite aspect was definitely Sable and her 3 younger sisters. Their dynamic, bond, support and love for one another was so beautiful. Everything they experienced and struggled with, was quite heartbreaking but their resilience was so inspiring.

While there was a sports aspect throughout the story it was quite minimal though, so I definitely wouldn’t consider this as a sport romance to be honest. There were also a few elements that felt a bit underdeveloped and scenes that didn’t quite flow at times.

The romance/relationship between Sam and Sable while a slow burn was still filled with so much love, tenderness, and patience. Sam’s commitment towards Sable was so beautiful. I also really liked that once he’s with Sable there was no one else for him even when they were apart for a whole year. The spice was great as well.

The last few chapters definitely felt a bit rushed and I would have liked just a bit more resolution on certain aspects and characters but the ending was beautiful and filled with a lot of hope.

I will say though, I wished we would have gotten an epilogue set years later. I also hope Sable’s sisters get their own books as well because I just know they each have their own struggles and journeys.

Overall, a beautiful and heartfelt read.
