Rachel Jones is a woman with a plan. She’s smart, beautiful, driven, and the top marketer in the Hedge Fund world. What she didn't plan? Falling in love with Walter "Scallop" Koslowski, a local farmer, on a weekend trip to the Hamptons.

Rachel attended Stanford on a soccer scholarship, landed a job at Goldman Sachs, attended Harvard Business School, snared her dream job at a top hedge fund, and lives in a penthouse in Tribeca. Her personal life has always played second fiddle to her career. Rachel buries herself in work because she is unhappy, empty, and reeling after a life-changing beachside breakup with her boyfriend from graduate school. Scallop left his family’s farm the morning after high school graduation to travel, surf, climb mountains, and explore rainforests. Scallop became a Navy Seal after 9/11, serving four tours. When he isn’t at work at the farm, he's surfing, fishing, hunting, or serving as a volunteer fireman. He lives a minimalist lifestyle in a tiny, uninsulated cottage on Peconic Bay with his four-year-old son from a previous relationship, and relies on his extended family to help care for his son and provide a routine of stability Scallop needed to keep PTSD at bay.

Financial pressures leave Scallop’s family seriously considering selling the family farm, leaving Scallop’s future uncertain. Despite being polar opposites, Rachel and Scallop fall madly in love over the course of a summer. Rachel’s friends and family tell her it’s impossible, even laughable, for her to be involved with Scallop. Those in Scallop’s inner circle are eager to see him put his best foot forward, but it isn’t clear he knows how anymore at age 40. When an old acquaintance of Scallop’s dredges up unsavory details about his past, Rachel sees clearly how the dark secret could cost her everything.

Conscience Point is a story about following your heart at all costs, how chance encounters can change our lives forever, and the sacrificial choices we make for love.

Love stories are typically not my go-to genre. I literally enjoyed this book. A convincing story with a charming opening scene. An engaging and relatable setting. Outwardly fascinating. Thoughtful characters with space to develop. Scene-end tears. Reading the book was an emotional page-turner. The subject of bonds inside enormous families resonated for me and made me remember my own good fortune actually. I've never heard of South Fork; however, reading Conscience Point, I felt like I was exploring South Fork in reality. Beautifully amazing story.

Thank you, Kate Rock Book Tours, for introducing me to this beautiful story.

4.5 stars, rounded up.

When two people who couldn’t be more different connect, is real love possible? This is a question at the core of Tade Reen's Conscience Point .

Rachel is at the top of her game career-wise, holding an executive position at a hedge fund. She’s great at what she does and she loves her job, and she’s certainly reaped the benefits of her success in terms of money and lifestyle. So what if her personal life has taken a back seat? Since breaking up with her last boyfriend, she hasn’t had much motivation to find someone new.

While taking clients on a trip to the Hamptons, she meets Walter “Scallop” Koslowski, a local farmer who lives a simple life with his young son, Kosumi. When he’s not working on his family’s farm, he’s also the local carpenter, volunteer fireman, and fisherman. He left the farm right after high school to travel the world, surfing, mountain climbing, exploring, and became a Navy SEAL after 9/11. The things he did and saw have scarred him, but the simplicity of his life and the love of his family eases the stress.

"He thought explaining yourself honestly and thoroughly was akin to opening a trap door to your soul. You could stand on the edge of the hole and look down at the underpinnings of your life and then close the door again and walk away, or something could trip you up, and you could end up down there with the snakes and moldy cardboard boxes of your past and no ladder."

Immediately, Rachel finds herself drawn to Scallop, but how could he fit in her world? And would he even want to? With the future of his family’s farm in danger, Scallop doesn’t know what his next steps might be. How could he uproot his son from the only life he’s ever known?

As their feelings for each other deepen, Rachel and Scallop must figure out whether love means sacrifice—and at what cost? Can two people who are so different be so right for each other, or is love doomed to fail?

Reen has created such a beautiful opposites-attract love story with Conscience Point . Scallop and Kosumi, in particular, are such unique, gorgeous characters, and I found myself so emotionally invested in this story. Plus, Reen’s gorgeous imagery made me feel like I was right there with Rachel and Scallop.

Thanks so much to Kate Rock Book Tours for introducing me to this fantastic book, and for sending me a complimentary copy in exchange for an unbiased review!!

This is an opposites attract story about a hedge fund manager named Rachel, who has taken a trip with several of her clients to the Hamptons where she meets Walter also known as "Scallop" .

Walter, a farmer( among other things, he's a jack of all trades really) lives a simple life with his son Kosumi. When he's not in the family farm,  he is a carpenter, volunteer firefighter and fisherman among other things.  He's lived a very adventurous yet hard life. Right out of high school he decides to travel to surf, mountain climb, explore all while doing odd jobs to make money.
Then 9/11 happens.  He immediately comes home,  enlists and becomes a Navy SEAL. What he has done and saw has certainly scarred him,  but now home and with the love of his son and family and simplicity of his life,  has helped him slowly heal.

Rachel is at the top of her game career wise,  she's one of the most sought-after hedge fund managers, but after the weekend in the Hamptons and meeting Scallop, she begins to question having put her personal life on the back burner. She feels things she has never felt or hasn't felt in a long time while spending time with Scallop, Kosumi and the whole family that has her teetering between a life she thought she loved in New York or the one she's gained by visiting South Fork.

I have to say this has been the most relatable book I have read in quite a while. Tight family bonds, engaging and relatable characters. It was definitely a page turner that made you feel every emotion.

Thank you Kate Rock Book Tours and the author, Tara Reen for providing me with a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

In full disclosure, a friend of mine does the voice acting in reading this book, Eleanor Katz. That is the reason I listened to it and I am glad I did not just for her excellent work but the redemption offered in this story. I felt as washed clean as the characters in how they found their way and what they meant to each other. When the book began, I did not expect this. I thought it was an ordinary man meets a woman and they are all wrong for each other, but then find out they are right for each other. There is much more to it than that. I am so glad my friend who voiced the audiobook told me about this as it was enjoyable and restful to listen to in a way and I wanted to know what happened to these characters. The author made me care about them and their world. It was a delicious read that I highly recommend!

I wasn't too sure about how this started out. It was slow starting for me and I felt an instant dislike for Rachel. She seemed to be the typical NY busy body. Too busy to care about others. Wrapped up in her work with no real depth and nothing to her life. And Scallop was a little too out there for me. They were SO opposite that I just didn't see it happening.
It took me a while to really feel invested in the characters. I kept waiting for this big moment to happen. And maybe that is because I read too many romance novels. They're all so fast-paced, usually. I really ended up enjoying the slow burn of this book, SO MUCH. It felt more like having a good friend tell me about how she fell in love with her summer fling. And I LOVED it.
Rachel and Scallop really have their issues, but the way that Tade Reen pulls you into how they work through all of that like REAL people is great. I love characters who have flaws and real issues and trauma. Things that the rest of us reading can relate to.
All in all, I would recommend this book, for sure. The ending was PERFECT!

Take a trip to the Hamptons with a story about following your heart and learning to not judge others at first glance. I was immediately invested in Rachel and Scallop's lives and friendship. Scallop's tendencies had me in amazement as he navigates life with his son and the family farm. The story kept me enthralled and wanting to know more!

I’m always up for an opposites attract story.
Rachel, a hedge fund manager and Walter, an ex Navy Seal turned farmer living a simple life with his son.
I was engaged from the beginning, from the setting to the characters. Tension filled pages that will surprise you.

Another fun summer read to add to your list. Worth checking out.

An opposites attract story about Rachel a top hedge fund manager who takes a trip to the Hamptons where she meets Walter "Scallop" a local farmer.
The story focuses on family and their past which makes their relationship more complex. Are Rachel and Scallop just a summer fling or have they fallen in love?

The list of reasons I rated this book so highly, happens to nearly match a list of bullet points I noted and saved from a screenwriting course -- the key criteria of a good movie. They are:

- A compelling story, with an intriguing opening scene
- An appealing and relatable setting. Visually interesting.
- Sympathetic characters with room to grow
- Scene-end hooks (especially if envisioned as a television series)
- Dramatic tension (as in a page turner, which I found this to be)

In reading the author's bio, I was not surprised that he studied drama and had an acting career. He did not, however, write a screenplay-novel; he avoided stage direction and wrote it without need for exposition in dialogue or voiceover. In writing craft parlance, CONSCIENCE POINT is show versus tell.

Also he knows the area and the locals (like Scallop) from a lifetime of summering, and understands the often tense weekender/local dynamic. And he's worked on Wall Street; knows successful rainmakers like Rachel.
