I read Diane Pope’s previous book for 8-year-olds, and this one, for 9-year-olds, is every bit as valuable.

Once again, the tone of the writing is clear, positive, and fun. Pope gives kids the feeling they are embarking on a fun adventure in life, and how to prepare for and handle all the good stuff, and sometimes bad stuff, that awaits. This includes the importance of having confidence, gauging emotions, crafting solid friendships, being honest at all times, making sure to laugh, and so much more.

I would say the heart of this book revolves around the importance of kindness toward others, in an effort to create the happiest life possible for yourself and everyone around you. Pope does a masterful job of conveying how crucial it is to approach life as if it’s a “grand adventure,” something to be expectant about and joyous to be in.

Nine-year-old children will also learn in this book the importance of curiosity, setting goals, being persistent, being confident, being positive, thinking big, and so much more. Just like the book for 8-year-olds that Pope wrote, this one for 9-year-olds applies as well to adults, who can all too often gloss over many of these things.

Even though many important topics are covered in this book, Pope makes sure to keep a lighthearted vibe and a sense of fun throughout. I like how she labels many of the traits she writes about as “superpowers” and her readers as “superheroes.” All in all, it’s a wonderful read.

"Skilled Fun" has published this book by "Diane Pope"--I am not sure of the identify of either--of "Essential Life Skills Every 9 Year Old Needs to Know: Life Skills for Kids - A Guide to Help Young Boys and Girls Succeed in Life" that is exactly as described in the title. There apparently is a whole series of these books for every age, although I doubt the life skills change much between eight years old and nine years old. But you cannot get a nine year old a guide for an eight year old. That would be preposterous.

The essential life skills themselves are great and should serve as mandatory reading for every human being at least once a quarter for life. The examples and anecdotes are geared for nine year olds (and maybe even eight year olds or ten year olds) with lots of wizards cloaks, magic adventures, heroic deeds, and the like.

The writing and editing are fine. Your nine year old grandkid may not like getting this as a gift, but it would be good for them (and for you).

The accessible tone and actionable tips help young readers feel capable of tackling everyday challenges, while parents will appreciate its focus on nurturing life-long habits.

A must-have resource for families looking to support their child’s growth into a confident and capable individual!

self-help book for 9 year olds

I really like how this book is like a self-help book for 9-year-olds. It talks about problems solving, self-esteem, handing emotions, and all kinds of things that every human deals with, not just kids. But I think as adults we forget how hard it is to be a kid. I'm glad this book is out there, to help kids with their own struggles. It's well organized and has stories about kids to help keep my 9 year old engaged. He probably wouldn't pick it up on his own, but I'll try to work through it with him, because these things are so important to learn.

my son is better equipped

My nine year old has a satiable appetite for learning. He was stoked when I found this book just for him. He has read it more than once already and frequently wants to delve deeper on the different strategies he learned in the book when he found out this author has other books for kids at different age groups he was over the moon. I guess I had better log into Amazon.

What a great read for pre-teens to encourage and build a solid foundation for emotional health and awareness. I love the playful way each topic is discussed with short stories intertwined. There's really a need for these types of books that help build up emotional intelligence in children from a young age....being more aware of their own feelings and giving them the skills to express themselves with kindness toward others. Well done!

You are the Hero of your own story!

This was a delightful book! I loved the passage "n a world where you can be anything, choose to be kind. Let's join hands and create a world where kindness rules, where laughter dances, and where love conquers." This is a very powerful statement. Every kid can benefit from the teachings in this book! Understanding emotions is so important in life!!!
