The House of Rule #3

Rules Sucht [Rule's Addiction]: Das Haus der Rules [The House of Rule]

Rate this book

Always a fan of romantic fiction, I've always been in love with the alpha-male. So in love, I've never been quite satisfied with the restrictions of series romance. I like to get into a guy's mind and have him do or say exactly what he's feeling at the moment, and sometimes I shock even myself! I consider my stories soft erotica; one man, one woman, heterosexual. But since abiding love is always the happy ending I'm looking for, my couples are always monogamous. My guy would never share his woman with anyone, and she is always enough to satisfy him. Since I believe that love starts with lust, my stories are always highly sexual, explicit in nature, and hopefully totally satisfying to my readers. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.

The definition of alpha male: Garret Rule
Thankfully he's met his match in Maria Alvarez. Seriously if there was ever an alpha woman she's it.

"I'm not sure you understand what happens to women who make empty threats-"

She lifted her chin and glared.
"I'm not sure you understand what happens when men let their cocks do the talking for them in the work place-"

******************************************************

Now as a wave of anger seemed to grip him, he leaned down until his was mouth at her ear and he demanded an answer.
"Do you understand me, Maria? Are you screwing with me? You've never been careless enough to fuck with me before. I'm warning you now wouldn't be a good time to start.
Maria attempted to give him a benign agreement as she struggled for control, but she lost it.
Challenge accepted douchebag.

I love how obsessed Garrett was but something was missing for me...not sure what it was. Maybe I didn't feel he really loved her, maybe it was because he seemed so damn angry and didn't want to want her. IDK...I just can't put my finger on it.

Loved the epilogue though!

Hot cover....best that I can say about this book.
Pretty bad, the first half is all hate-hate-hate. Even the sex was hate-sex. The second half was harlequin style romance. It was as if two people wrote this short story. I did not like Maria in the first half of the book, so it ruined the story for me.

The third in the House of Rule series features Maria and Garrett - he’s been intrigued with Maria since he heard her voice and he must have her, natch. Maria’s not thrilled the Rule Corporation has purchased her hotel. Sparks fly and crazy, dysfunctional romance happens.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

Garrett, oh Garrett, you rode the line of alpha-hole pretty well. He’s a blend of Damian (who I loathed) and Nick (who I liked), the two earlier heroes. He’s obsessed with Maria, and if it were RL I’d side-eye him like crazy but sometimes I like a bit of melodrama in my romance novel. She’s bitchy (and knows it) and more than a match for his domineering attitude. She loves to drive him crazy, even when she won’t admit it.

I need balance in my romance -if the hero’s an OTT domineering alpha, then I need to see him with a woman who can handle that and go toe to toe with him. In this case, I felt that their dysfunctions matched well. His jealousy was tolerable, and overall, I thought their chemistry was a bit off at first, it started to gel a bit more as the story went along.

Works as a standalone - if you’ve read the earlier books you’ll see how the timelines for each book overlap with each other, but you do not need to read those to enjoy these, which I actually admired. It doesn’t happen often in books. It’s a decent entry in this series, though the second book, Rule’s Property, would be my favorite of them all.

The Bottom Line
I liked it. *shrugs* Garrett and Maria are dysfunctional and a bit crazy, and sometimes that’s just what I need in a romance. I’d recommend for those who like their heroes on the alpha-hole side and enjoy a bitchy heroine who gives as good as she gets.

It's so refreshing to read another Lynda Chance book after having to read a pile of dark erotica novels these past few days. Lovin' this series so far! I disliked Nick's story, but this book made my heart smile. Garrett Rule is the epitome of Alpha Fucking Male, and I loved Maria's ridiculously badass attitude. I soooo love Lynda Chance when it comes to the hotness overload of her OTT possessive alpha males. I just wish this one was longer though. I can't seem to get enough of these Rule men!

Lynda Chance knows how to do alpha. Garrett was OTT possessive of Maria. Maria pushed back at first, not wanting to fall for him. Initially, I didn't feel like there was any romance, but once Maria let her guard down things started to progress between the couple. The Rule fellas are a handful that is for sure. Up next in their baby sister Erin's story.

I am a Lynda Chance super fan. It hurts me to give this such a low rating. I will get straight to the point, the h was absolutely awful. She was a total b!%@$. She had no redeeming qualities. The h, Maria, was the same person who in the previous book was intentionally making things difficult for Courtney in the previous book. We find out in this story that Maria had acted out bc she was upset that Courtney got the job that she felt was rightfully hers. In this book, Maria is described as someone who is professional and very efficient at her job. This directly contradicts with how negligent and unethical she behaved in book 2, all bc she was throwing a tantrum for not getting her way. What kills me is that Courtney was doing a great job so if Maria had really cared about the hotel she wouldn't have tried to sabotage the renovations. I loved the H and Lynda Chance can't write a bad H. Her heroes are unbeatable. I didn't understand the H's obsession with Maria. There was nothing good about her that stood out. She constantly gave the H the cold shoulder even threatening to sue him numerous times. This made the H seem like a total psycho bc he was always chasing her while she wanted nothing to do with him. The sex scenes were great and the H was wonderfully possessive. Maria eventually comes face to face with Courtney and what does she do? Well, she takes it upon herself to gossip about seeing Damian with a woman. This made me furious. Maria seemed more like a villain. Her actions disgusted me. She has no relationship or business with Courtney and should never have inserted herself in that situation. Maria is reluctant to take her relationship with the H further bc she wants him to say the "L" word. We never see that Maria loves the H or feels anything besides lust for him. I did like seeing Damian and Angie again even though it was a brief scene. The character Max in this story will be the H in the next one but I'm not are I liked him. He came off as a slimy creep. Nevertheless, I will give it a chance bc Lynda Chance is an auto buy for me. That being said the Rule series has gotten decreasingly low ratings with each book so I am hesitant.

2.5 stars. Rounding up because it was an easy, angst free read.

I really didn't enjoy the first half of this book. I was expecting a crazy alpha male who knew what he wanted and went after it. I didn't really get that. I mean, he was obsessed with getting her into bed but that's all he wanted and I didn't even feel like he even tried that hard. I don't like when the hero just wants to have sex with the heroine to get her out of his system. I want insta-LOVE! Also he was pissed off that he wanted her. I HATE that in books! I want the hero to love that he fancies the heroine! He wasn't nearly crazy obsessed enough for my liking either.

I did enjoy the second half a lot more. I'm glad there wasn't any stupid drama or angst. That's always a plus. I liked that Garrett got a lot more alpha and went after her more. I just wished he was a bit more crazy! I still don't really know how I feel about Maria. She wasn't anything special. She was quite flat to be honest and sometimes she annoyed me, though I can't put my finger on why.

I think a lot of alpha male lovers would love this but for me it just fell short because I wanted much more crazy and chasing from the hero.

My favorite Rule! Lynda Chance is a guilty pleasure read. You know her alphas could have set us back 50 thousand years with their brand of primitive possessiveness but I love it! Garrett Rule gets a hard on just from listening to Maria's voice. Maria manages one of Garrett's hotels and he had never met her. Imagine when he does. The build up and the sexual tension was off the charts. See, Maria tries her best to slap Garrett with a sexual harassment lawsuit at every turn and at first it was fun, but I eventually wanted to yell at her to just give in. There were plenty of opportunity for jealousy and when a Lynda Chance hero gets jealous, things move along faster. It's as if it's the catalyst and you know there is a claiming very soon with a side of bulldozing.

This Rule was a bit different because Maria was really feisty which I loved for the most part. My only gripe is the ending. It felt rushed. After all the buildup I wanted more to finish the story. I really don't mind quick reads, but this felt just a bit too short.

Unfortunately, I am stopping at the 75% mark.

I just couldn't get into this book and have been skimming much of it.

Yes, Lynda Chance writes about over the top alpha men but for me, Garrett stepped over the line with . There really are no other words for what he did.

Perhaps I am being overly sensitive about this. Who knows? Regardless, it's spoiled my enjoyment of the book and Garrett is someone I just don't want to read about.

My guilty pleasure (and its not a secret)!! Lynda is back on form with her Alpha, bossy and dominant hero Garrett!! He is OTT and wants Maria - nothing will stand in his way not even Maria herself. Sparks fly as Maria is strong, stands her ground and doesn't hand herself on a plate to Garrett!!

5+ addictive stars!

As usual, reading a Lynda Chance book is a great experience, she delivers great alpha characters and the heroines are always likeable, but in this particular book, we have the stron sexy qlpha and we have a strong kickass heroine.

Garrett Rule is dominant, billionaire and hot as hell, used to get any woman he wants, but he's obsessed with Maria alvarez, well not exactly with her but with her voice, since he's never seen the woman in person.  Maria is used to men attention, but she doesn't understand why Garret Rule is different, he makes her crazy, even without knowing the guy in person.

When they finally met, the fight of wills start...

“ “I’m going to give you fair warning, baby. That shit you pulled on me today? Don’t turn it on for me if you don’t want me to react, understand?” “I didn’t do anything,” she denied hotly, knowing she was lying. “Oh, I think you did,” he answered, gripping her harder. “Bullshit,” she spit out. “Bullshit,” he retaliated. “Fuck you,” she hissed, so angry she thought her head might explode.

The fun part was, Maria never backed down, even when he was super pissed at her for something...

“Do you understand me, Maria? Are you screwing with me? You’ve never been careless enough to fuck with me before. I’m warning you, now
wouldn’t be a good time to start.” Maria attempted to give him a benign agreement as she struggled for control, but she lost it. Challenge accepted, douchebag.

We have a totally hot alpha...

“I’ve wanted to fuck you since the first time I heard your voice.”

But Maria is stubborn and her antics only set off Garrett...

“Are you coming?” Antagonism lit her features, a brilliant sparkle of ice shining from her eyes. She stayed exactly where she was, shaking her head and clenching the railing so hard that her knuckles lost color. When she spoke, she spit defiant words out that were meant to hit their mark, “Not with you. Never with you.” Her meaning hit him solidly in the solar plexus and his temper flared as his cock hardened more fully. He took her words one way only, as a direct challenge. So much for attempting to leave her alone. Well, then . . . game on, baby.

Of course things evolve between them and he shows his possessive side...

“Let me explain it to you,” he growled. “Nobody puts their fucking hands on you again, understand me?”

Totally hot reading, very enjoyable and we have an epilogue at the end with a HEA.... Can't wait to read Erin and Max's story!

Hmm . . Over the top bossy Garrett. . He didn't overthrow brother Damian but surpassed Nick in the alpha Rule category. . . in my opinion of course.
Some readers are going to think he skirted consent a couple of times because G came across incredibly intense and Marie, the heroine blew hot and cold. I had a tough time pinning her emotions down even at the end. She seemed aggressively not interested in G one moment and then passively accepting and accessible in the next. It became a case of the lady "doth protest too much" and that never sits well these days. But then, I have a feeling anyone loving all that is alpha yummy in a Chance hero doesn't mind them being utterly not PC.

Another book in this series that I'm not crazy about. Too much anger on both sides, and that's before and just when they met. I felt like it was contrived and they didn't have that much history together to begin with to have that much anger against each other. Liked the epilogue though.

These brothers were the epitome of hoes, but when obsession, lust, and love hit them hard, all bets are off, and it's entertaining to see them have a 180 and become a one-woman man. I don't particularly buy the "reformed hoe" trope, but since this is fiction, I could tolerate it (barely). 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, into the story. I haven't read the second book yet, but it seems that Garett (29) and Maria (25) got introduced there—well, not in person, but through their call correspondence. He buys hotels, flips them, and sells them to the highest bidders. Their latest acquisition was a hotel where Maria has been working since she was 18, and she couldn't accept the fact that she's going to lose her job. But she didn't know that Garett had no intention of firing her, in fact, he was invested in her personally and professionally, which is why he's never gonna let her go (like ever). 😏

Gotta admit, the first 58%-ish of the story was straight-up workplace sexual harassment. Maria hated Garett's guts and everything he represented. She didn't want to do anything with him, and she wants to stay as far away as possible most of the time, unless she really needs to talk to him. But he's not having any of her avoidance, so cornering her or summoning her to his office became his go-to move. Like I said, it's sexual harassment. She was always warning him to stop whatever his plans may be and to stay away from her if he didn't want any lawsuits. But again, he's not hearing any of that; he wants her, so he's going to have her. 🫣😬

It's not that Maria didn't feel any attraction, but she values her work ethics and pride so as not to get entangled with Garett. I actually liked her for standing up to him for the majority of this story. She might come off as prickly in the first half, but I'm actually surprised by her attitude. Props for not being a lust-driven FMC.

But Garett's relentless, and he had it in his mind that she's it for him and no one else would have her, and Maria eventually gave in to him. I guess readers know what will happen next in their story. 😉

While I enjoyed it, my main issue with the MMCs in each book is their bulldozing ways and unwillingness to compromise with the FMC. It has to be their way or the highway at all times.

Like here, Garett told Maria to hire someone and delegate her job to that person instead, so that she could go with him whenever he went and for her to move in with him and leave the only place she has ever known. He knew all along that she loved her job and that place more than anything else in this world, and yet he was still not willing to compromise on how to make their situation work. He never considered what she wanted, and in his head, if she only agreed and went along with his plan, everything would've been smooth sailing for them. 🤦‍♀️ When she didn't, they got separated for two weeks, and his form of communication was texting her each day with the same message: "Nobody touches", sweet, right? 🙄

Anyway, he had enough of being miserable for the last two weeks, so he went back to the hotel, finally confessed his love for her, and she did the same.

Overall, it was good-ish; if readers wanted to read about an obsessed MMC, Garett would deliver. And if they want a feisty FMC, Maria is definitely one; others might see her attitude in the beginning as bitchy, though, but I don't mind it. And if readers can get past or ignore the blatant workplace harassment happening here (I brainwashed myself into thinking it was a dubcon) , I think this is still an okay short read.

Book info:
- Novella (168 pages)
- Workplace romance
- Insta-lust then love
- No cheating, owd
- No real omd (she talks to clients, but he's jealous of every guy 🤷‍♀️)

Vanilla
