Rate this book
A boy, a runaway alien, and football. Laugh-out-loud fun for ages seven to 10. And with a hilarious twist! From the international best-selling author of The Secret Lake .

When 11-year-old Charlie Spruit finds an alien on his doorstep one morning he can hardly believe his luck. Who is he? Why has he come?

Charlie soon discovers that his new friend Eeek! is soccer-mad and has run away from space to watch the World Cup Final with him.

Charlie hides Eeek! in his bedroom, where he sleeps on the ceiling by night and pores over Charlie's football magazines by day. The only person he lets in on his alien secret is his best friend Jake.

But when nosy classmate Sid Spiker, who lives out the back, spots Eeek! through his telescope, things start to fall apart - big time! Sid has his own plans for this glowing green alien, which bring surprises that no one could have imagined.

Karen Inglis is a bestselling children’s author based in London, UK, writing for ages 3–12.

She is best known for her time travel mystery The Secret Lake, which has sold over 600,000 print copies worldwide and is in translation in 12 languages. Set in London, it follows siblings Stella (11) and Tom (8), who discover a time tunnel while searching for a neighbour’s missing dog. The tunnel leads them to their own home and the children living there 100 years in the past. First published in 2011, the book hit bestseller lists in 2018–19 (and continues to rank highly on Amazon), proving that children still love a good old-fashioned adventure!

Two long-awaited sequels followed: Return to the Secret Lake (2022) and Beyond the Secret Lake (2024). The latter won the UK Selfies Children’s Book Award, announced at London Book Fair in 2025.

Karen explains:

“There was a long gap after book one as I was busy with other projects — but the best things come to those who wait! Reconnecting with Stella, Tom and friends was such a joy, and the response to the sequels has been wonderful. The Secret Lake was always going to be a hard act to follow!”

Karen’s other books include:

Eeek! The Runaway Alien (ages 7–10): a soccer-mad alien runs away to Earth for the World Cup. Illustrated, fast-paced and funny — a hit with reluctant readers!

Walter Brown and the Magician’s Hat (ages 7–10): magical mayhem ensues when Walter inherits his great-grandpa’s enchanted hat — and discovers his cat Sixpence isn’t quite what he seems...

Henry Haynes and the Great Escape (ages 6–8): Henry falls inside his library book after complaining it’s boring — and meets a smelly gorilla and a bossy boa with a zoo escape plan!

For younger readers:

The Tell-Me Tree (ages 4–8): a gentle, rhyming picture book that helps children talk about feelings through drawing, writing or conversation. Praised by parents, teachers, and charities, it's widely used in UK homes and classrooms. Includes links to free activity sheets.

Ferdinand Fox rhyming stories (ages 3–5):

Ferdinand Fox’s Big Sleep – inspired by a real fox who slept in Karen’s garden!

Ferdinand Fox and the Hedgehog – introduces Hatty and her son Ed, plus facts about how to help hedgehogs.

Ferdinand Fox and the Lost Boy – Ferdinand comes to the rescue in his bravest story yet.

A collected edition of all six rhyming stories is currently in the works for readers aged 6–7, or for parents who enjoy reading rhyme to younger children.

How it all began…

Karen’s writing journey began in 2010 when she took a sabbatical from her career in business writing to revisit story ideas drafted a decade earlier, when her sons George and Nick were small. One was The Secret Lake, which had been tucked away in a drawer after early rejections. This time, she self-published — and never looked back. In fact, she has turned down three traditional publishing deals in the last few years, preferring (for now at least) to retain creative control of her IP.

She eventually left business writing to focus fully on children’s books. Today, she regularly visits schools in person and via Zoom, and has signed books in Waterstones branches across London.

My son has dyslexia and normally he is quite reluctant to read, but once I mentioned that I needed his help to review this book he was on board!
When he saw the front cover I could tell he was intrigued to find out more about Eeek!
After the first chapter he exclaimed 'I already know what I'm giving this book, a 9 outta 10!'
As the book progressed there were lots of words he wasn't sure the meaning of but that's what reading is all about isn't it, finding out! He did say he loved the story and found it funny but he wouldn't have been able to read it by himself.
It was a pleasure reading it together.

I am ten years old and i got asked to review this amazing book for TBC.
The story is about an alien called Eeek and a boy called Charlie and they both love football.
The story follows the adventures they have. There are a few great surprises and twists to this fun and fast paced story. I laughed through much of it, but part of the story I felt sorry for Eeek (Awwwww) and then was really surprised by the ending. I’d recommend any football or alien loving readers to read this story.

This a review by Abigail, aged 9, who read the book.

"I really enjoyed this book, because it made me see pictures in my head. My favourite character was Eeek, because he seemed really funny and friendly. My favourite bit of the book was the dilemma and surprise at the end of the book, but I won't say any more because I don't want to spoil it. It really made it more interesting for me to read though. I would definitely recommend it to all my of my friends to read."

I read this book with my 7 year old son. We both really enjoyed it. My son thought it was funny and he liked how Eek was not what you thought!! My son actually had a 'what ... gasp' moment. He wants to read more books about Eek. He said if there were half stars he would give 4.5.

My daughter read this book for the TBC reviewer group and loved it from the 1st page, the story was based about an Alien who had runaway as he wanted to come to earth. She found this story funny throughout which she found added to its charm, she liked the characters and like the suspense throughout the book. My daughter is 10 and a keen reader she read this quickly as she is at the higher end of the target audience but said she thinks that younger children would love it as it has great characters and is funny which makes you want to keep reading.

Eeek! The runaway alien by Karen Inglis is the perfect book for 6 - 10 year old boys or girls who love football and aliens. This perfectly illustrated book grasps the attention of young readers with bright colours and interesting drawings. Inglis tells the story excellently about a young boy Charlie who wakes up one morning to answer the door to an alien. Charlie later finds out that Eeek! has run away from Space to Earth to be with him because he is soccer mad and the world cup is on. Eeek! stays with Charlie in his bedroom and sleeps on the ceiling. Eeek! is a big secret in Charlie's neighbourhood until slimy sci-fi mad Sid Spiker, who lives out the back, spots Eeek through his telescope.
This is an exciting story that will have children wanting to turn the pages.

‘Eeek! The Runaway Alien’, written by Karen Inglis, is the perfect book for any boy who likes aliens and football. A fun and fast-paced story suitable for 8-10 year olds, this story follows eleven year old Charlie Spruit’s adventure when he answers his front door to find an alien named ‘Eek!’ standing there! Charlie soon discovers that this alien has run away from space to Earth to be with him because he is soccer mad and the World Cup is on! Eek may be fluorescent green with smoke coming out of his ears but just like ET, he’s a wonderfully loveable alien that will have you in stitches with each page you turn.

I love this book! Imagine being an 11-yr. old boy (Charlie) who encounters an alien knocking on his door. The alien (Eeek) decides to move in with Charlie. They develop a friendship and find out that they have many common interests including football (US Soccer). They engage in adventures...Find out how Charlie and Eeek spend their days and nights on earth.  I love how the author, from London UK, uses words like mum and football (U.S. soccer).

The images and story were fantastic...I loved this book!

This is such a fun read. Imagine a boring Saturday morning, when the most exciting thing to happen in your 11-year-old life is your dad clearing out the garden shed. Then all of a sudden a runaway, football-loving alien rocks up at your front door and wants to hide out in your bedroom.
Well that's what happens to lucky old Charlie Spruit, who rises to the challenge of entertaining his unusual guest while trying to protect him from the weird sci-fi nut of a neighbour who can't wait to get his hands on a real life alien...

“Fun story. I wish a runaway alien would visit me!!! Now, that would be cool. This is why it’s good – it’s not difficult to understand, it’s got lots of pics in it, it’s very, very funny.” Boy, aged 8 – with a little help from mum
“It’s good to find a book for 7 – 10 year olds which isn’t ‘message’ dominated but is simply ‘fun’. A lot of author seem to forget what kids enjoy. Thankfully, Karen Inglis hasn’t. If your kid enjoys Roald Dahl, they’ll enjoy this. Lots of fun!” Mum of 7 year old girl
“There was lots of suspense in this book, I didn’t like Sid Spiker, but I don’t think the author wanted me too. I liked his name though. It didn’t take me long to read this book. I enjoyed all of it.” Boy, aged 8 – with a little help from his TA

Eeek! The Runaway Alien.

This book is aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 10, and for that reason I am going to pass the baton to my daughter “Tabitha” who is 8 years old to review the book in her own words:

When my mum first gave me this book, I was looking forward to reading about an alien invasion. But actaully, it’s not about an invasion at all. It’s about a runaway alien who comes to earth to learn about humans.

Charlie is 11 years old and football mad, and it seems so is the alien who just showed up at his front door!

I loved the book and it was easy to read. There were some great pictures in the book too.

I won’t tell you what the ending is, but it’s a good surprise. You will have to read it to find out.

If I could give this book 1,000 stars I would, but apparently I can only give up to 5. So I suppose it has to be a 5 star review.

My daughter who is 7 read this to me and I was excited to have been offered to review this book. My daughter loves to read an was even more excited about helping write a review.

Here is what she said;
“I liked the book because it was exciting. I especially liked the part were Eek the alien wore the boys football shoes. It was very easy to read and that made the story easy to follow. I liked the pictures but I would have liked them in colour.”

Thank you for a book that was appropriate for my daughter. She looked forward to reading a chapter each day although it did take us longer then expected due to life getting in the way.

I would recommend this book to children who love to read as it could be read independently or with an adult.

This book was recommended to me as ideal for engaging reluctant readers. As I work for a charity that encourages children to read for pleasure, I was interested to test it out.

I may not be the target audience (the grown-up mother of a girl, and neither of us like football) but this book charmed me from the first page.

It is written from the point of view of a sporty boy in the early stages of secondary school who finds a football-mad alien in his bedroom. As the boy tries to pass off the smoke-blowing green alien as his visiting actor cousin in fancy dress, his wry observations about both the alien and members of his family made me laugh aloud. It's the type of story that would have bedtime readers pleading for ten minutes more or reading beneath their blankets with a torch, until they reach what is its very satisfying conclusion.

With short chapters, ending on cliffhangers, and interspersed with just enough amusing illustrations to sugar the pill of chapter books for easily daunted readers, this is just the (football) ticket to get boys reading. I'm sure girls would enjoy it too. This one certainly did! Great stuff!

It is not necessarily my style of children book, but it is well written and with a lot of action that keeps the tension high and the reader curious for the next development. The illustrations are well done and adequate for the artistic sensibilities of a 7-8 year old. The runaway alien, which at the end of the story reveals to be a 'she', left the family to discover the human world, fascinated by the English soccer. 'Eeek', named by the children he visited because of the sound uttered when asked what's his/her name, doesn't speak, but his adventures and feelings are described in simple sentences, using a lot of suggestive action verbs. Despite the verbal communication problem, there is not that difficult to establish a kind of dialogue and even to go on disguise at various social events and soccer games. The story is written from a page to another, keeping the reader wired to find out what will happen. A good weekend or holiday reading for the little ones.

Read this with my seven year old daughter and she loved it. She would have no problem reading this on her own, but we enjoyed reading it together. In her own words she wrote: 'This book is about an alien that has run away from its family and it wants to play and watch football. I like this book because I like the mystery and it is funny too!'
