A gripping, compelling novel in the Women of Valor Series
Editorial Review Top 500 Reviewer 5.0 out of 5 stars Thriller with a Medical Mystery Reviewed in the United States Verified Purchase Sincerely I hope that I am like Countess Dorothy when I reach my early 80's. Love her spunk. And, I would be remiss if I did not mention that lovely canine, Angel. Five woofs for her, too.
Michaela McPherson, was once a Richmond, Virginia, homicide detective. This is one of those professions that never leaves your blood. Once a detective, always a detective.
Thought this was a fast-paced novel with intriguing character development. And, there was an array of delightful characters to keep the reader's interest.
Could this streak of murders be domestic terrorism or is it something else?
Most highly recommended.
Get it and get reading! “This series rocks! I love the characters and hero dog Angel!”
Dr. Judith Lucci is an Amazon bestselling author who writes what she knows. She is the author of the Alex Destephano Medical Thriller Series and the soon to be released Michaela McPherson, Private Eye, a series centered on a retired homicide detective from Richmond, Virginia who really can’t retire.
“Before I wrote fiction, I was an academic writer who published research, theoretical works, text books and just about anything a nurse or college professor needed to publish to survive. The differences in academic writing and writing fiction are dramatic. Writing what I know propels me to pull from my clinical experiences, some good, some not and use popular fiction as a means to teach and advocate for others. My books have three purposes, to engage the reader, to entertain them and to educate about healthcare and perhaps, the darker side of hospital life.

Awesome Book The Case of the Dead Dowager is the second book in Judith Lucci’s Michaela McPherson Crime Thrillers series and is an intricately woven tale with lots of action and suspense. Ms. Lucci is very talented in creating suspense and tension with her written words. This book is a fast-paced page-turner and kept me engaged from the beginning of the book until the end. I highly recommend this book those who enjoy reading books in the mystery, thriller, and suspense genre.
Countess Dorothy (Dottie) Borghase is having lunch with three of her oldest friends when one of them, Camilla Rothrock, collapses and subsequently passes away. Dottie believes Camila may have been poisoned and wants her friend and crime-solving partner, Michaela (Mic) McPherson, who is a retired Richmond, Virginia homicide detective and owner of a restaurant and bar, Biddy McPherson’s to help her figure out what happened. When more people are poisoned, Mic finds herself deeply involved with multiple agencies investigating what appears to be a matter of terrorism. Mic and Dottie find themselves in over their heads.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I had high hopes for this new-to-me author, because of the 4-5 Star reviews on Amazon and Good Reads. However, I did wonder about one Good Read member’s 1 star rating, but there was no accompanying review. Chapter 1 features two characters interacting: ‘“Perfecto, this stuff looks flawless,” Boris said in his thickly accented voice . . .”’ Here’s his description from first few pages: tall, pale, skeletal, bald, he smokes, has a crushed-in skull, thin lips and decayed teeth. Oddly, Boris, who has a thick accent, speaks idiomatic American English. Snake, the second man, says: “Way to go, tall guy. Good deal. You know we gotta maximize our efforts.” Snake also speaks like an American, but unlike Boris, he is swarthy with a pockmarked face and greasy black hair. In my mind, I see a short, stout, bullnecked man—perhaps not a Russian, but maybe he’s from the Middle East or one of Central Asia’s ‘Stan nations. Snake also says: ‘“Perfecto, tovarich, perfecto!”’ Aaaaaaand I’m in cartoon-land with a scary Russian dude named Boris—the most cliched Russian male name ever! I expected Natasha Fatale to pop up and say: “Hello, Dollink!” If the two characters were less cartoonish, I’d have said Boris is old enough to be ex-KGB and now he’s GRU or maybe SVP. If Snake were less cartoony, I’d say he is hired muscle—maybe Bratva? Or ex-Spetsnaz?
THEN on page 20, I could not believe what I was reading: Frankie—who is chauffeuring a white, Virginia congressman around Georgetown—says: ‘“Yo, Congress Man. I getcha somewhere ASAP. Doan want Miz Kathryn mad at me.”’ Later Frankie says: ‘“Here you go, sir. ‘Dis here’s a safe place. My buddy works for da man in ‘dat house and they be at work.”’ DID I REALLY READ THAT? I’m guessing the author thinks the driver should talk this way, because he’s supposed to be an old BLACK MAN. Or if you prefer, an older African-American. Compare Frankie’s speech with that of Boris, the older Caucasian Russian male with a heavy accent—who speaks idiomatic American English, as does his swarthy friend Snake! If I had a physical book, I’d have thrown it across the room. Two days later, I tried again and read on page 45: “There was no question that Michaela would LAY DOWN and die for Angel . . . “ I rolled my eyes. Page 52, the author wrote: “Sean, her drop-dead gorgeous restaurant and bar manager . . .” Uh, isn’t this sort of a cozy mystery and not a bodice-ripper? There were many other problems including plot holes, but I won’t bore you. I docked a star for terrible formatting. The book starts with justified format—>then switches to not justified—>there are single spaces between lines but switches to double-spacing—>returns to single spaced lines. Repeat ad lib. It’s taken me a week to finish this book, because I closed my Kindle so many times. I skimmed through to the ending, because I wanted to know: 1) who hired Boris and Snake? 2) what were their motives? 3) why, of all places, Richmond and not Alexandria or Arlington? 4) how did the cops find poisoners? I’d decided on 2 stars until I reached the end and found a partial denouement with major hanging threads. I knocked off another star.
Dottie, Countess Dorothy Borghase, is having lunch with friends when suddenly Camilla, one of her dear friends, collapses. It is assumed she had a heart attack, but the Countess has her doubts and immediately calls Michaela. Before the day ends, Dottie’s suspicion is confirmed, Camilla was poisoned. The plot thickens when more poisoned victims emerge. Michaela and Dottie swing into action searching for the culprits.
This story has it all—dangerous, ruthless villains that hate each other, a gifted psychic, a smart, protective dog, a little romance, and two clever women who will stop at nothing to find the killers. This is a well-crafted, exciting mystery that gripped me from the start to the finish.
Let me start by saying, I'm a die hard fan of Judith Lucci and have devoured all of her titles. This one does not disappoint! In this page turner, we are met with a case of domestic terrorism - or is it? People are dropping like flies at restaurants, festivals and the MO is poisoning. But what it this lethal concoction and who is doing this? The story begins with the death of Camilla Rothrock, while lunching with her gal friends. Who would do this to a little old lady? Lucci has crafted a conspiracy theory, complete with two dastardly characters - Boris and Snake who are determined to take out a town using Boris' deadly mix of poisons. They're both crazy as loons and just make your skin crawl! Michaela McPherson, her sidekick lovable canine Angel work savagely, along with the suave sexy detective Slade to try and find out who, why and how. Aside from Mich, I think Dottie is my favorite character. She's a haughty, loveable sleuth who bring humor and smiles to the story and we find she is unyielding in her attempts to help the case.
If you're looking for a good medical mystery, laced with a little humor and endearing characters, then I urge you to grab Judith Lucci's newest jewel. Bravo Ms. Lucci! (Now when are Slade and Mich gonna hook up?)
This is the second Judith Lucci book I have read since I met the author at Massanutten Resort in August,2017. Since I live near Richmond, it almost feels like home. The plot is terrifying, and one hopes it never happens for real. Hard to put this down once the situation has been established. Looks as if this was a dictated manuscript as there are a number of errors and omissions that do not affect the reading experience. The proof readers could have been better. I think you'll enjoy reading this book and want, as I, to go on to the 3rd book in the trilogy.
It's a nice story of gruesome crimes but there is no mystery and I wouldn't call it suspenseful either. The reader can figure out most of it long before things happen. Particularly annoying is the same scratching the dog behind the ear in every single chapter. Yes, the dog's relationship with the main characters is crucial but it's repeated over and over are the platitudes Michaela and Dottie slather each other with. Those endearing observations are 'told' with common phrases rather than shown actively in the scenes diminishing true feelings. Thus, I never really felt a connection to the characters.
This is my 2nd book to read this author and I can't wait to dig into her previous series. She has definitely hit my favorite writers list, which isn't easy to do, as there aren't many spots open there! Danger lurks in every shadow for Michaela and Angel and, of course, Dottie is right in the middle of the action. Slade is there to back up Mic every step of the way. Lots of action, adventure and a little lite romance thrown in for good measure. Don't miss this outstanding book. Highly recommended for all ages.
Interesting thriller of serial killers poisoning for the fun of it...
Serial killers Snake and Boris have been testing poisons on women, children and elderly people. Each poison seems to do the job quicker and kill more people. After Dottie's friend is poisoned, she, Michaela, Mic's dog Angel and Detective Slade, along with the FBI, and officials try to stop the serial killers before they pull off hitting their targets.
A thriller of a book. So much action. The story moves quickly, with lots of twists and turns. Also, she brings in people from the Alex Destaphano series. She does a magnificent job of tying them together, to add more intrigue and drama to the story. A must read for anyone who has read the first series about Alex West alpha no. Enjoyable, thrilling adventure for all readers.
I would like to rate this book 3.5 stars although not all a fault of the author. There were several repetitive sections and typos....I don't need to know Mic and Slate had a"thing" but "don't want to go there" stated more than one time. Overall entertaining but not as absorbing as it could have been.
I really get some great hours of reading from Judith Lucci and this just added to it. I loved the interaction between the characters and Ms. Lucci's writing just brings them to life. The plot is frightening and all so possible in today's world. If you like strong women and dogs (who doesn't) you'll love this book. Add a small touch of humor and you've got a winner.
I haven't enjoyed reading this much in a long time. Judith is a master storyteller who weaves characters and plot magically together. I love that she moved some of her characters from her other series into this book. Be prepared to read into the night ... This book is hard to put down.
This is a fantastic book. Kept me up all night reading. The story line I a bit frightening but you want to keep reading to find out what hay next. The character development is great with Michalea and Slade their normal inquisitive self. I can't wait for the next book in this series to see if the Russian tries to get Machalea again or not.

Thought I would enjoy a light crime novel however I dislike books that do not wrap the story up nice and tight or explain how Snake got away - I realise that another story can be written including a very good adversary but that’s no excuse. I have another three books by this author to try but they have been moved to the bottom of the pile.
Mic is a retired cop with a great trained dog. They find themselves in the middle of a horrible crime where someone is poisoning people in Richmond,Va. So far they have killed over seven hundred people Mic her dog must help catch the person or persons who are doing this! It almost caused the death of both of them.
This is a very interesting, exciting and thrilling story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the women on this series. They are dedicated to each other and work together to make sure each of them are safe. The big dog, a police dog formly , is another great reason for reading this series!
I would rate this 31/2 stars. I like the characters, the story was compelling. I like that the dog plays an important role. I’m a realist, so I did question some scenarios, but I do that in the majority of books I read. I would read more of the series.
Michaela gets involved in a case where someone is poisoning people. First victim is a good friend of the Countess, then some young women and a bunch of children. Can Michaela find them before more are killed?
without grammatical and spelling errors. There was also a repeated paragraph that annoyed me because it had no change. The plot line was awesome and the characters rang true.
Terrorism in Richmond , VA . Poison is being used to kill people , old, young and children . Who , what and why? Mic is threatened . Angel and the Countess are injured . Not a good thing at all. A couple of typos and a repetitive paragraph . Still worth reading . Ms Lucci has a keen imagination .
Combining of multiple stories from the authors' portfolio is always a challenge...This pairing was especially intriguing. Hope there will be many more in the future.
The countess and Michaela start by investigating a octogenarian friend who is at lunch with the countless and is poisoned. They have to stop these evil people before there are many more are murdered, but they almost lose their lives in the process as well as angel.
Two serial killers are on the loose. Michaela McPherson Countess Dorothy Borghas join forces. Michaela and Dottie need help from the Richmond Police and the FBI as the mystery unravels. This is a well written, interesting book that fans of mystery and thrillers will enjoy.
I really like this author. The books are easy reads and have good character development. She also writes in series and some of the characters in one series will show up in another series. This was an edge of your seat thriller. There is even an ongoing bad guy. I highly recommend.
Exciting plot with lotsa twists. When I get tired of the gore, sex (called romance), profanity this one of my stand-by read-again books. Like the characters and (so far) the plots. Recommended.
