I love writing and reading. They are both my passion. My genre is generally set to new adult and contemporary, with a few twists thrown in.
This book might take the cake for the worst thing I’ve read in my life. Yes you read that right. So I read this book because of a TikTok with this quote
“You were warned I’d slit your throat if you touched her. Unlike my brothers, my threats aren’t idle.”
l was expecting mafia and bad dudes yk. But then page 32 happens
“And don't think I won't know if he touches you, Justine." He purrs my name in a throaty rumble, making it sound more feminine than it is. “I smelled your purity. I’ll know if it changes.” He whispers his last two sentences as if they were only intended for my ears.”
This might take the cake as the worst quote I have ever read in a book. Umm now in combination with that quote the writing of the book is atrocious. I never understood what was going on because the writing made me so confused. It was like I was reading the book but it was in Spanish (context I speak Portuguese so I can get the gist of Spanish barely). The book didn’t have a plot, it could’ve been 100 pages and conveyed the same garbage. The mafia element exists sorta but it’s very weak and the book is already setting up the “Yeah HES bad but like daddy issues” like idc. Random quote that really ties the book together
““I am the devil reincarnated to rule my empire and slay the weak. I am Nikolai: Prince of the Russian Mafia.”
Ugh! I'm so sick of dumb, conceited, narcissistic (because we were once insecure females) in books. Boring, flat, wannabe, juvenile males. The first 30 pages of the book are literally about how attracted they are to each other. Ugh. She can also 'smell testosterone'. As well as fear. And virile scent. Wow. Need I say more?!. She got herself into a sticky situation not once but twice! Lord, who would actually ask her to represent them. *Facepalm* I've given it the point 5 because the writing style was bearable.
Just okay. The development of the relationship was weird and the heroine was just horny all the time. It got annoying. Characters are all overdramatic too.

3.5 stars. I liked this story but didn’t like the writing very much. I found the writing inconsistent. Sometimes it would be ok but then the author would resort to using phrases she had already used elsewhere in the book. Some of the writing was repetitive and words were sometimes misused.
For instance “He is commanding and direct with his crew, but the loyalty he shows his family is exponential, to a point it is nearly obsessive.” Exponential means to become more and more rapid so the author’s use here makes no sense.
At one point the author talks about a reaction taking too long, so long that it felt like the time it took the sun to go around the earth three times. Guess what? The sun doesn’t go around the earth. The earth goes around the sun!
Later “It feels like the earth circles the moon three times before Nikolai...”. The earth doesn’t circle the moon! The moon actually orbits around the earth. I know this is not a big deal to some but come on! Do we really need to change science? Later in the book she repeats the assertion about the sun going around the earth as a metaphor for something taking too long. Where is the editor?
One of the things I thought the author did really well was story pacing. This story never slows down to the point where you get bored with the story. It’s an interesting story right from the beginning. Interesting characters. And, even though the H and h don’t bump uglies until later the sexual tension between them starts early and the author keeps it upfront and center. I’m looking forward to the next book.

Nikolai and Justines fire is hot 🔥 I was burning up while reading this entire book. I have read this a few times already and will definitely be reading it more.
Nikolai: A Mafia Prince Romance is the first book in the Russian Mob Chronicles- and part of the incredible Enigma series by Shandi Boyes. This is an exceptionally well written story- and nothing less than what I have come to expect from this consummate storyteller. She manages to enthrall me with every new release, each book leaving me in complete awe of her talents. This book can be read as a standalone but believe me when I say that one of Ms. Boyes books will never be enough and you will WANT to go back to read the other books in the series too. This is a captivating mafia romance, with plenty of twists, danger, action, some violence, and sooooooo much more. I fell in love with the characters and their story, but then again, I expected nothing less from Ms. Boyes. We met Nikolai previously in the series, and I was immediately intrigued by him- but I have to be honest and say that I wasn’t sure I was going to ‘like’ him from what we had seen of him. I didn’t think I could become invested in him or his story- but I WAS SO WRONG!!! Ms. Boyes wove her magic, drawing me into her story and showed me that there is so much more to Nikolai than I had ever expected- and I couldn’t have loved him more than I do. Justine is fantastic, I just love how perfect she is and how wonderful these two are together. There are so many layers, facets and interwoven details throughout this series, little things that you read several books back, end up coming into play in ways you never expected. Brilliant!!!! I have developed a serious addiction to Ms. Boyes books- and it’s one I’m not about to cure anytime soon! Bring on the next book! KUDOS!!!
This was book 1 in the " Russian Mob Chronicles" Nikolai Popov was raised in a criminal underground that's as bigoted as it is violent. He's lived a hard and fast life which often sees him facing a line-up, yet he's not spent one night behind bars. Justine Walsh dreamed about being an architect when she was a child, but when her brother was served a life sentence for murder, her plans altered. Now she's a first-year intern at the best defense firm in the country. She's seeking help from the right side of the law, so the last place she expects to find it is in a man who's far from lawful. Nikolai wants Justine as they spend more time together she starts to uncover the real man behind the mob and gets a glimpse at the man who has captured her attention. This was a good read this book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. This book ended on a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Nikolai is me with a dick and Russian accent. I'm cringe so he's cringe, like come on, i know girls are fucking beautiful but don't be so found of her within five seconds, come on man. And you are hard all the time, rip your cock.
2⭐️/2.5🌶 well...to say i was really looking forward to this book would be an understatement. I've seen tons of quotes on my FYP from this series and its had me in a chokehold for MONTHS.
so when this ended up not hitting for me I was really disappointed.
so first and foremost, it's insta-lust, which is fine a mere yellow flag, i can deal with it if there was something redeemable in this story but idkkkk... nikolai was hot and a major possessive alpha male? i guess that's a redeemable quality but other than that i was just really frustrated by the end of the book.
Justine is a first-year law intern at this prestigious law firm working under a well-known defense attorney, Mr. Fletcher. She is said to be very beautiful and has her assets, which is said to have essentially gotten her the job because Fletcher wants to use that to his advantage and is also wants to get into her pants. Now, she also wants to get into his pants, but you know being the professional she is, she never acted on it. Not sure how i feel about the fact that she only is in her position because of her looks and she doesn't seemed bothered by that at all? hmmm... Her firm gets assigned this case to defend the mafia prince Nikolai and she ends up getting the lead on it, which I'm not 100% sure how being an attorney works, but i think it's safe to say being a first-year intern would not make you lead on a major case. Nikolai Popov is the mafia prince who was arrested for assault and after being accurately identified, Justine and her firm are brought on to defend him. They make eye contact and BAM they are immediately infatuated with each other...I'm sorry but this is just not believable to me. So while Justine should be remaining professional, she is thinking of getting into his pants but is constantly in her head saying she should be more professional, which we all know isn't gonna happen. Now listen, Nikolai has such a dirty mouth i would also have a hard time concentrating, but everyone is just witnessing the things he says to her, i would imagine someone saying something, but no.
Now moving on, Nikolai either has to spend the holiday weekend in jail or on house arrest until the courts re-open. now with the chaos that ensues, he is granted house arrest because he won't be staying at his house or any of those associated with him. do you know where he is staying though?? JUSTINE'S HOUSE. BECAUSE SHE ACCIDENTALLY PUT HER ADDRESS ON LEGAL DOCUMENTS. WHAT??? HOW DOES THAT EVEN HAPPEN? And he does, which then leads to obvious sexual tension, but since it was insta-lust i really didn't feel any connection besides the physical, which is fine just doesn't do it for me.
The pacing was also lost on me. i was not keeping up with it and was lost to which day it was (it only took place over three days i believe).
Justine was just so bothersome. She did not act like the lawyer she "tried so hard to be" (i give air quotes because there really was not a solid time where she tried to be professional). She also was said to speak Italian in the very beginning but no other language but then on page 136 she could understand russian when there was no previous knowledge of her being able to understand the language (unless i missed that somewhere) then on page 190 she all of sudden speaks 13 languages, Russian included. i feel that should have been mentioned way before it did.
this is the first book of the series so it leaves off on somewhat of a cliffhanger but i think it could have continued to add more substance because not much really happened in the book.
idk i was just left really frustrated.

What is the matter with smut authors and nicknames from other languages? Throughout the whole book the male mc refers to the female mc as "Ahren", towards the final chapters of the book it is then revealed by the author that this is supposed to mean "angel" in Russian. Well, while I have a hunch where this is coming from, the Russian word for angel is "Ангел", which, yes, might look similar to the butchered nickname the author chose, but actually is nothing else than the Cyrillic letters for the exact same Latin ones to form the word angel. So why bother?
Long store short: OK setting, semi-interesting plot, spice not entirely making up for it.

This is the first book that I’ve read by this writer. It was a little short but a good read . Nikolai is in the Russian mob and Justine is his defense attorney. The story kept me hooked and the couple had major chemistry . It ends on a cliffhanger so to find out what happens to Nikolai and Justine you have to read an additional two books !
DNF before end of Ch 13. FMC simply not believable. MMC definitely believable, but the two didn't mesh. Story could not hold my interest. No interest in continuing the series.
Book: Nikolai Read By: Ebook Author: Shandi Boyes Genre: Dark Romance, Mafia Recommend: Yes < b>Age recommendation: 18-30+ Years My feelings:
Prepare to be completely mesmerized by this gripping mafia romance, filled with danger lurking in every shadow, action that will leave you on the edge of your seat, and twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.
“Then I suggest you choose wisely, as any man you touch will be buried in a shallow ditch within minutes of your exchange. Nikolai has never placed dibs on a woman before you.”
From the moment we are introduced to Nikolai in previous books of the series, he captivates us with his dangerous aura and mysterious past. As we delve deeper into his story, we can't help but become invested in him and his journey. Ms. Boyes has a knack for creating characters that we love to hate - it's almost as if she knows our weaknesses and exploits them in the best way possible.
“I never understood what Rico meant when he said his wife was his reward for years of misery…” His eyes bounce between mine as the unidentifiable glint I spotted yesterday grows. “…until you walked into my life. You’re my little slice of heaven in a hot and temperamental place.”
And Justine is no exception; her fierce determination and fiery personality make her the perfect match for Nikolai, their chemistry practically sizzling off the pages. But beneath the intense romance and action-packed plot lies a hidden web of intricately connected details that span multiple books in the series. This brilliant storytelling will leave you constantly amazed and craving more from these unforgettable characters. “Everyone knows good things come in threes, Nikolai. So, what’s the last item on your wish list?” Nikolai’s chest rises and falls at a slow, rhythmic pace four times before he mutters, “I’m going to kill my father.”

This was a slow burn which I normally don’t enjoy but the tension was 🔥! So even thought my Smex until like the last 5% it was bareable. This was a good story. Justine is an intern at a well know criminal Law firm where she’s hoping to be able to get her brother whose in jail for murder charges she knows he didn’t comment, some help. She goes to help her boss land a big clinic, the Russian mafia prince. From the first meeting, Nikolai is enraptured with Justine. A mistake on house arrest papers gets Nikolai sent to justines home for the 3 days until they head back to get Nikolais charges hopefully dropped. Without that time frame they fight the sexual tension and their attraction to each other.
-Not dark -not smexy time but a lot of sexual tension -mafia vibes but not really in the environment -easy, and really a slow burn. This felt more like a foundation for the other books in this series
Justine was never going to be a lawyer, but she saw the chance to help her brother and took it. When they want the case for Nikolai. Justine can’t deny how Nikolai makes her feel when he looks at her, he makes it clear he wants her. Justine being distracted fills out the paperwork for Nikolai to have home arrest, imagine her surprise when the Judge grants it, and her address is on the paperwork. Nikolai makes it clear how much he wants her and how much he will protect her. Justine fights their attraction because he’s her client and her focus is on getting her brother free, but the more time she spends with Nikolai the more she learns about the real man behind the Mafia Prince. Ends on a cliffhanger.
Absolutely Awesome Read, well written, great characters, Awesome story line, easy read to hold you on their journey, this genre might not be for everyone but its a really wonderful story cannot wait for more from this Author.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It’s a good start, story building but the audiobook voice was hard to handle. She made the MC sound so child-like and putting on a baby voice. I wanted more and the ending from the Male MC was the icing on the cake. Not sure if I’ll read the next one but it’s a 🌶️ and a half
I hate books that end in cliffhanger. Unless it’s a storyline cliffhanger not about the couple. That is a trigger for me. I really wish that it was listed at the beginning of the books.
