He never meant to stay. He certainly never meant to fall in love… Summer Island off the coast of Norway was the place London chef Jack Greene should have been from. He's an outsider in the community that should have been his family, and now he's setting foot on the strange land he has inherited for the first time. Ninni Toft, his nearest neighbour, has come to the island to mend her broken heart. With her wild spirit and irrepressible enthusiasm, she shows city-boy Jack the simple pleasures of island life – and what it means to belong. To a place. To a people. To one person in particular… Home is where the heart is, but is Jack's heart with the career he left behind in London, or on the wind-swept shores of Summer Island, with Ninni?

Summer Island is a wonderful read, that I heartily recommend.
Norway, a country that I'm not too familiar with, however, after reading this book, it's given me a great insight into how Norwegians live, their culture, and it was a nice change from a story set in the Uk. My taste buds were tingling at the descriptions of the foods, the author did an excellent job of describing the sights and sounds and she really brought her characters to life.
I loved Ninni Toft who was the heart and soul of the story, and I loved the close relationship that she shared with Petter, her Dad.
I also loved Frikk, a delightful character - how Ninni adores him! His little antics really made me smile and in one scene, I really felt on edge...
Oh, how I would love to live on the Island, the closeness of the inhabitants, to share in their get-togethers and celebrations, relaxed and so different to living in a city or even a town in the Uk.
Jack and Ninni initially meet in a not so pleasant way. Ninni is on her way to her Dad's island home and unbeknown to both of them, Jack is on his way there, too.
The Islanders soon have some questions for this stranger and I wondered myself how the story would progress.
I took a dislike to a few characters, (they can't all be good!) and the rest, I loved. I liked each of them and their characteristics, and the author couldn't have made them anymore believable on the page. I think Jen was wonderful and who from the beginning, kept an open mind about Jack.
I knew all along what I would like to see happen in the story and I enjoyed every minute of it. I found it emotional at times and I can't express enough how beautifully written this story is. It is heartwarming, full of hope, love, friendship, fun and is everything that friends and family should be!

It's not every day we come by a book set on a Norwegian island. And that was more than enough reason for me to pick this book. Telling that it lived up to my expectations will be an understatement. Suffice to say this is one of the most relaxing reads I had this year.
If Norway is half as beautiful as the books shows, it will be a shame not to visit it once. The place-names might be hard to pronounce, but the fun, laughter and the friendly faces Norway offers is going to mesmerise you from the beginning of the story. This could be the story of Jack and Ninni, but little summer island, you are the real hero. Anyone will need an ice-cold heart to leave that place.
A summer fling turning into something more, an English man finding his roots. . . 'Summer Island' is this and much more. Jack and Ninni are there on the island for different reasons, but both find a new purpose there. I loved the way the story progressed expertly linked with the life of the island community. Nosy neighbours and a dog with human intelligence just adds to the mirth.
What are you waiting for then? Stock up your fridge (warning: prepare to witness the slow and painful demise of your diet plans) before grabbing a copy. You will love it for sure!

It is really refreshing to read a nice summery book, set not in France, Greece, Spain etc... but in Norway. It's not a setting I've come across much although it is a place I'd love to visit in real life.

So was delighted to be able to get to know Summer Island, a Norwegian island, and its inhabitants over the course of this book. In particular Ninni who's heart lays on Summer Island even if she doesn't live their full time, and Jack, the Englishman who has just discovered he has inherited a farm on the Island and is visiting for the first time.

Seeing the island through Jack's eyes is wonderful, we get to see various Norwegian traditions, and also the local customs, odd words of Norwegian and it was fascinating to see what Jack, a chef made of all the local food.

Then there is Ninni who is trying to recover from her latest heartbreak and really doesn't know what to make of her new neighbour, who really knows nothing about life on a Norwegian island. I enjoyed seeing them both get to know each other better.

This was an incredibly relaxing read, the pace of life on the island is rather slow, and it was an enjoyable but gentle story that I was able to really enjoy.

This may be the author's first book, but it certainly won't be the last one I read by her. Lovely writing style and I'd love to hopefully read more books set in Norway.

Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily,

A light and summery read. Just what I needed!

One of the things I liked most was learning a bit more about Norwegian customs. And the island, of course! I felt like I could smell the sea... all these descriptions of the island and the life there brought back so many good memories.
I also liked Ninni and Jack, they are so different, but these differences make them complement each other.
I liked the story and enjoyed it a lot, although I wish we could have learnt more about Ninni and Jack, to get to know them better.

A lovely story which gave a wonderful insight into a small island in Norway. I enjoyed reading about the traditions, culture and food of Norway and the growing relationship between Ninni and Jack. I felt that the story had scope for more books in the series as there were lots of interesting characters who I warmed to immensely. I also felt that the relationship between Ninni (the main female character) and her dog Frikk was so real and could perfectly relate to their relationship, which was adorable.

I think it was great to have a setting that was not the norm of France or Spain for example, which made this book unusual and certainly a book I would recommend to read.

Thank you to netgalley for an advanced copy of this book.

I loved how this took place in Norway. When I saw that, I immediately wanted to read it.

Jack Greene is a chef from London whose in Norway after finding out he inherited land. He meets his neighbor, Ninni, who has arrived on the island for the summer after a bad break up. Throughout the book, she shows him around all the local areas and they start getting closer. That is until a surprise she never expected happens. Will Jack end up back in London following his career?

This book was so cute! I loved how at first Ninni was totally not interested in Jack, and how everyone in the town wanted to get to know “the Englishman”. Ninni shows Jack all around, and I loved the aspect of him being the new guy in town. It was kind of a slow burn romance as well as airy and light. I can’t wait to check out other books by Natalie Normann!

I was fortunate to receive a copy of this book to read from NetGalley.

I didn't realise until the end that the author actually grew up in Norway!

Jack finds out he has inherited a farm on an island off of Norway and relies on the help of his closest neighbour quite a bit as he learns to understand island life. Then he has to make a choice whether to go back or move forward, and Ninni also has decisions to make.

I enjoyed the environmental references and spending time in the close knit community, who initially view Jack as the enemy!

A lovely will they/won't they love story x

Sometimes I get in this mood where I need fluffy romance and.. then I actually need it. The feeling is not to be refused or ignored or whatever. So.. When it popped up again, I immediately jumped at the chance to pick up this fun-sounding book! A chef? Set in Norway? I was so curious about it!

Like I just said, this book is set in Norway and I don't think I've read many books set in that country so far? It added a lot to the story because the author included a ton of Norwegian things - food mentioned, customs, habits, explaining the culture and.. so much more. I was being immersed in all things Norway and loved it. Especially the way it got done! We simply get to know all these things through one of the main character's setting foot in Norway for the very first time because he inherited some land. Like.. It added something to this story that I feel.. I might miss in other romance books from now on? I don't know. We'll see, I guess, haha.

There's this short moment where Jack is.. pretty much being a Peeping Tom and thinking a certain phrase that's very much on the side of "objectifying women". The simple fact that I highlighted it and put a note in says plenty about how I felt at that time, I guess? Didn't really appreciate it and.. maybe that shouldn't have happened..

But, the main thing I think fell short is the lack of romantic or sexual tension. You know the way romance novels tend to build up to a first kiss or their 'first time'? I didn't feel that tension, or something akin to cuteness, at all while reading Summer Island and it's such a shame too! I feel like the author was trying and I would've enjoyed this one way better if she had succeeded..

3.5 / 5

If you're interested in Norwegian culture and want a romance to go with it, this might definitely be the book for you! And you might even get hungry, with one of the main characters being a chef and all..

Summer Island is almost as good as the real thing! I think I'll be booking a flight to Norway as soon as travel is safe again.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After a terrible breakup, Ninni retreats to her family’s house on a small island off the coast of Norway. Jack is heading to the same island to discover his family history. An adorable will they-won’t they plays out across gorgeous scenery, with a healthy side of delicious food.

I’m a big fan of the scenery in this book. The beautiful beaches, gorgeous water, sailing trips, and island community sound absolutely gorgeous, and I’m definitely adding coastal Norway to my travel bucket list. Then, there’s the food! Jack is a chef, and both he and the islanders prepare delicious sounding meals throughout the book. You know the food is beautifully written when even a vegetarian’s mouth is watering!

Ninni and Jack are both lovely and funny, and we get just as many scenes with them solo as we do together, which gives this novel a well-rounded feel. The friendship and community that we experience first through Ninni and later through Jack felt so real, and was truly heartwarming throughout the book. I think we’re all yearning a bit for that sense of community, especially right now, and this book certainly delivers.

As we near the end, things start to happen very quickly. The ending wrapped up a little too quickly for me, and I would have loved a little more detail and fewer time skips. Overall, however, this is a fun summer beach read and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to escape to a gorgeous island for a few hours! I give Summer Island four out of five stars.

The weather may have turned a little bit today, but this book will transport you right back to summer!

Set on a small Norwegian island, the story is full of quirky characters and some beautifully described scenery. The determination of the islanders, particularly Alma, to dislike Jack was amusing, and I enjoyed the way his relationship with Ninni developed but also how he won over everyone else too. Frikk the dog is a very cute addition to the cast of characters too!

A very easy to read style and really enjoyable. I'm very much looking forward to returning to the island for Christmas when i read Christmas Island!

My issue was that the story was mostly told and not shown. This created a disconnect with the characters. I still didn't care about any of them this far in and didn't feel a point in continuing.

Perfect story to read on an island in summer funnily enough! The plot is set up as the perfect ‘meet cute’ with English Jack heading out to Norway to claim land which has been left to him. He comes across one of his new neighbours, Ninni, who has also just arrived on the island after a tough break up. She’s not looking for love and neither is Jack. And there are plenty of obstacles anyway to anything happening, least of all Ninni’s lack of interest. But as we all know, sometimes the person who is indifferent to you or even nasty is the very one you have to watch out for!

The island in Norway plays a charming role – almost playing cupid and helping them to keep their distance when needed. The island isn’t that big so everyone know everyone else. This new ‘Englishman’ takes their interest immediately. Who is he and what does he want?

I really loved the way the author made use of location and culture to add to the story. The outsider coming in, the ‘strange’ local customs and the misinterpretations make for some fun reading. It added a lot to the story and there was lots of nice food mentioned too which is always a bonus. AS Jack gets to know his new home and the community, you learn lots about the Norwegian way of doing things and it really gave a fresh spin on the romance story.

BUT…this is not your simple sweet romance story as it’s a slow burn with the characters views of each other changing quite a lot. There’s no sweetness and light here but rather some pain and regrets of the past. Ninni doesn’t even like Jack at first so they are not the obvious couple by any means. Some might say this is a shame, but I do like a bit of drama (in a novel – when it’s real life it’s a totally different thing!)

This book offers a taste of and short getaway to Norway. Just what we all need right now!

Oh and kudos to the author for writing this as her first book in English. Now I have her Norwegian ones to go and seek out! Yippee!

Heartwarming, funny and so romantic!

I read this book after reading Christmas Island, so I already kind of knew what was going to happen - but it didn’t spoil the story in the slightest! I have fallen in love with Jack and Ninni, and I want to visit the island more than ever now. Such a lovely, warm, romantic story. Highly recommended!

Last Christmas, my friend @readswithchristine recommended Christmas Island by @natalienormann. The cover was so adorable, I decided to get a copy. That’s when I realized it was the second in a series with the first being Summer Island. I’m all about doing things in order, so I ordered the first one and held on to it until, you guessed it, summer.

It was just the perfect escape for a summer day. I loved the Norwegian coastal setting, the lovable cast of characters and the sweet story. It was just a breath of fresh air for me.

Check back at Christmas for my review of the next in the series. I can’t wait.

Ninni returns to Summer Island after breaking up with her boyfriend Karl and is hoping to mend her broken heart. Jack is at Summer Island after learning that he has inherited a farm and some land from a resident of the Island Agnar. Agnar was his father who he never knew and it also transpires is Ninni’s neighbour. Jack is hoping that the farm will fetch a quick sale, but the community of Summer Island are initially suspicious of him as they are concerned that he will sell the farm to developers, until they learn how Jack and Agnar are connected. Ninni and the community embrace Jack even though he is a newcomer in the hope they can persuade him to stay. Will Jack sell the farm or will he stay on the island?

This was an easy and comforting read, with a very sweet and warm storyline. The characters were likeable and relatable. I really liked Ninni’s personality. She’s funny, quirky, says what she feels and her sense of humour is on point. Jack is very sweet and although his first meeting with Ninni wasn’t ideal as he was driving on the wrong side of the road when he collided with her whilst she was on her bike, from the outset they just clicked. Both Ninni and Jack are similar in that they have been betrayed by a person close to them and in some ways are using the Island as a way to heal themselves. The more they interact the more it becomes clear they are trying to find somewhere to belong. I loved learning more about Norwegian culture including Constitution Day and the sprinkling of Norwegian words which I enjoyed researching. From the beginning Summer Island sounded welcoming and once I started to read I never wanted to leave as it sounded like such a magical place.

This is the author’s first book in English and it was just perfect. On the last page of the acknowledgements section the author wrote ‘Dear reader, I hope you enjoy my attempt at making Nordic less noir and to show you how romantic my country can actually be’. As a first time reader of this author I can say that the author has not only succeeded but excelled in her attempt as I loved this story and fell in love with Norway.

I could highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading romance novels!

Spend the summer on a small Norwegian island, where time seems to have stopped. Enjoy the sun, the brisk ocean breezes, and the picturesque views of small farms. Say “hie” to the general store owners Jens and Alma. Savor Britt’s homemade beer and savory meats from the local smokehouse. Search for mussels and crabs along the craggy coastline. You may even want to help the local “hippies” plant their potatoes.

Best of all, you will get to know Ninni and “her Englishman”. Ninni is a blend- she’s beautiful but has a personality that is cool and blunt and a heart that has been wounded by a lover’s betrayal. She comes to the Norwegian island every summer, a place that soothes with her its simple tranquility and childhood memories. But this year, things may be changing, when a young Englishman inherits the biggest landholding on the island.

The Englishman is Jack, a master chef from London. He has a passion for creating fine meals and his cuisine adds much flavor to the story. How did he come to be the heir of Agnar and now the owner of property on the island? This may be a small island, but there are many hidden stories that will be revealed in this fascinating Holiday Romance.

The story is told in blunt, forthright and honest fashion. The summer island is a place of raw nature and the characters reflect this. They are practical and pragmatic, but also understanding and open to change. This is not a sweet or cozy story, but it’s honesty and openness are appealing. By the end of the book, readers will be satisfied with their escape to the pretty island, and the story’s resolution, with their hearts warmed by the lovely descriptions of life on the island.

I read the author’s biography and she is Norwegian, and she has published 56 books, mostly historical fiction. This is her first book written in English. I received and advance review copy from NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers, One More Chapter. This is my honest review.

I selected “Summer Island” because I was looking for a beach read type book set in a place I’ve always wanted to visit. In this case, that place was Norway. A few years ago, I discovered (thanks to my sister, the ancestory buff) that both my maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother were of Norwegian descent. I never really knew either grandmother well. Both were adopted out as children and never raised by their biological parents. I always thought I was predominantly Irish based on my maiden name and my dad’s Catholic family that came west from New England. In fact, my first overseas trip after I retired was a trip to Ireland to connect with my roots. It came as a big surprise because I am a pint-sized retiree with a pixie cut and Irish blue eyes. I thought I was an Irish girl through and through. LOL

I had another reason for picking this book. My library has a Book Bingo promotion going until the end of Spring Break. I needed a book for the “Read a Book That Takes Place Somewhere You Have Always Wanted to Visit” square.

The book gave me a lovely introduction to life on a Norwegian island, the food and drink popular in Norway, and the sense of Koselig, which is the Norwegian version of “Hygge.” Hygge is a Danish concept. It means creating a warm atmosphere around yourself and enjoying the good things in life with good people. In this story, Ninni is showing Jack the joys of a simpler life on the island, and Jack is trying to understand his roots and figure out his place in the world. The coziness of a Norwegian life is drawing him in, not to mention Ninni.

I gave the book a “4” because at times the dialogue was simplistic and the solutions to problems too easily reached or apparent. However, I did really enjoy this book, and if you’re looking for a sweet book about Norway with family, romance, and a dog in the mix, you will love this book.

My heeaarrrttttt 😭❤ This was so beautiful.

I absolutely loved this book and did not want it to end! 😍 I'm so glad Christmas Island is out soon so I'll be able to get my next fix of the Greene siblings.

I have been so into romance books lately and this one was definitely a winner for me. It reminded me so much of Carole Matthews' style of writing and I absolutely love her. Specifically it reminded me a lot of Happiness For Beginners.

This is the first book I've ever read set in Norway and now it's somewhere I definitely want to visit, when it wasn't really on my radar before.

Summer Island is told from the perspectives of both Ninni and Jack and I loved them both so much and just wanted them to have a happy ending! We meet Holly too and her story is told in the next book.

I just loved everything about this book; the culture, the romance, the drama, the sense of community. Stunning.

From the moment I picked up this book, I couldnt put it down. I loved the characters of Ninni and Jack and really enjoyed the way the author put them across and told their story. Both arrive on the island for very different reasons and cannot imagine how life will change for them both.

I have never read a book set in Norway before so this was a real treat and the author brought the whole place to life so much I could envisage myself there. The description of the community, the characters, life on the island and the food was amazing so much so Norway is now on my list of places to visit. As a little aside it would have been lovely to include some of the wonderful recipes in the book.

I would highly recommend this as a lovely summery read and I can't wait to read the next book.

What can I say about this book? It was absolutely amazing and I was sucked in and could not get out.

I fell in love with Ninni, Jack and of course Frikk!

This book was so light hearted and addicting that it entices you to keep reading and become apart of the story. I was waiting for Jack and Ninni to get together but that plot twist!!!!!!

The whole concept of this book was so intriguing and it definitely made you laugh in places.

I cannot wait to see what Natalie's next book has in store!

I honestly was between 3.5 and 4 stars. The book was good. The story was good. The setting was GREAT. But the romance was just not descriptive. It just didn’t really show their chemistry. It never really made me feel what they had together until the end. And even the end was sorta there sorta not. Again, it’s not that the romance wasn’t there, it was. But it just seemed short and to the point. Still a good story though and a good ending. Loved the setting in the island!!! So cool!!!

Summer Island follows Ninna, a Norwegian young woman returning to the island of her childhood post breakup, and Jack, a British chef who inherits a farm on the island, despite having never been there.

I'm sure you get where things are going, but along the way we're introduced to a slew of charming islanders, a peak into Norwegian culture, and a little romance that's more sweet and wholesome than it is steamy.

My fiance and I have a soft spot for Norway - it's where we got engaged! So I loved being transported back to this gorgeous country's culture and sights. And fun fact: it's the author's first book written in English!

If you like Hallmark movies, this is a sweet little summertime read and it'll be on shelves June 24. Thanks Harper UK and Netgalley for the chance to review early!

Absolutely loved this story, the gorgeous setting and the wonderful Frikk. Ninni was a great character who guided Jack through his first experience of Norway until he too fell in love with the place. The island seemed like a wonderful place to live and helped develop an interest in Norwegian culture and food that I’m keen to experience for myself sometime soon. The story itself is an easy read but makes you think about what truly makes a family and how sometimes you just need to stop and change direction in life. Overall, a great read but makes sure you have some time to spare - you’ll not want to put it down till you’ve finished!

An accidental (literally!) meeting changes everything for Ninni when she returns to Summer Island off the coast of Norway. For Jack, it's a matter of a whole new culture and way of life. As a celebrated chef, life of the island seems foreign but which offers a whole different way of life. Can he make a new future for himself here?

This sweet romance was the perfect escape during this globally stressful time. The story was predictable (but couldn't we all do with some predictability right now?) and enjoyable, and the cast of characters was delightful.

I’m struggling to write this review. The story was cutesy without much depth. Maybe it’s my fault that I didn’t read much about the book before starting it?? The story mainly takes place on a small island off the coast of Norway and yes some of the words are in Norwegian! After bought 30 pages I knew what was going to happen in the end. As an avid reader I wanted more, I liked the characters but they were not original. If I had to choose again I would probably skip this story.
