Beyond Love #1

Beyond Control: Beyond Love Series #1

Rate this book
Gabby Sullivan learns in college that some things are impossible to control, and whenever life has spun out of control bad things seem to happen. She promises herself that she'll stay a safe distance from the top three Sex, Love, Relationships.

But some things are beyond control…Gabby handles her mom's death and brother's sudden abandonment just about as well as anyone could at the age of twelve. Left feeling alone, she finishes high school, developing a bit of a wild streak, and lives like there's no tomorrow. That is until an illness stops her in her tracks. Learning to control life around her becomes her comfort. With a visible scar that reminds her and the world that she beat the odds, it's impossible for her to put everything behind her, no matter how hard she tries.

The moment she sees Jason, she knows her life will never be the same. But she doesn't know why. He's everything she said she never wanted. He's cocky, arrogant, and infuriating. With his dazzling amber eyes, dark hair and chiseled features she can hardly remember where she's going, let alone where she's been and maybe that's a good thing. She begins to let him show her what life could be, if she really lived it.

Neither wants their past to define their future, but sometimes destiny has something else in store. It's only as their love grows and secrets are revealed that they realize a devastating connection from their past might actually tear them apart.

BLURB:
Everything in Gabby Sullivan's life is going according to plan--her father's plan. With a brilliant job in the corporate world, glamorous parties, and a beautiful condo overlooking Seattle, she is thrown into a world she doesn't want to claim. It's not until Jason
Facing his own demons, Jason attempts to piece his life back together after a personal tragedy. Damaged by his ghosts, Jason finally begins to forgive himself whenever Gabby's around. She makes him feel--alive, something he hasn't felt for a long time.

It's only as their love grows and secrets are revealed that they realize a devastating connection from their past might actually tear them apart.

------
Dear reader:

I hope you enjoy reading Gabby and Jason's story as much as I loved writing it. This is a completed story of Jason and Gabby and is the first in a new series. However, the book does end with a new story just beginning surrounding another couple, who I've gotten the joy of writing about. Their story continues in Beyond Doubt and is out now!

Again, thank you for taking the time to read the first in the Beyond Love Series, and I hope you enjoy!

I so so wanted to give this three stars. The writing's good. I liked the main characters. They felt real. The sex scenes, while not terribly erotic were almost poetic. There wasn't much cheese (well, apart from in Gabby's job in the cheese industry...). All good things. But it was destroyed by the sob stories. All the sob stories. So. Many. Fucking. Sob stories. I really hate sob stories. So something bad happened to you. That's sad, but it doesn't make you a better person or a more compelling hero or heroine. Enough with the poor old me routine.

There was no need whatsoever for the sheer amount of 'look at me, my life is sooooooooooo hard':

It's like a 'who has a worse life' competition. The answer? Newsflash: EVERYONE HAS PROBLEMS! Yours may be rather farfetched, but still - GET OVER IT! And then to have this drama at the end when it's like ooh we're all happy, but wait! Don't get complacent! Because Karice Bolton is just waiting to nearly-but-not-quite kill off another character. As a plot device. Because god forbid we could just find out about without another chance for some sobbing.

It's just... all of this is totally incongruous and unnecessary. Beyond Control could've been a really fun light read but instead it was just a bit lame.

It took me a while to figure out why I hated Gabby but I did it. She's in her 20's acting like she's 16 again. It's pretty bad actually, I can't figure out why this book has such high ratings. "C's sake?" Really? And this "Plus, it didn’t help that a guy I might possibly be interested in seems to know my brother better than I do." She had one conversation with the guy, and rejected his offer of a date. And all her brother said is "I introduced them." Seriously? The things going on in her mind sound exactly like the ramblings of a teenage girl with her first crush. Especially in the coming inner dialogue. He asked her out but she's like "there's not way he's interested in me" and she gets into a jealous fit over his blonde helper. Her insecurities are just... I keep repeating myself but, really, teenage girl. High school all over again. A book about adults should not remind you of high school. She's constantly insecure. And she oversteps her boundaries. In her, I believe, 3 conversation she already starts asking questions that she shouldn't, like, almost too personal. And then when he doesn't reveal all she says "I think I scared him away." Not to mention all the times he's asked her out, she's turned him down and in her mind she turns around and says "he's probably got a girlfriend." Like, holy s*** get a grip. And I have no idea what sense of humor of Jason's she could have possibly fallen for after only about 4 meetings. He never made me laugh, in fact, this book didn't make me laugh or feel anything but annoyance. This chick is nuts. I've read a lot of books about women who had a difficult childhood, worse than hers even, and they weren't bipolar. She changes her mind in the blink of an eye. She can't stick to anything, she's very wishy washy. It's so obnoxious. And I know I'm being picky, neurotic, and mean in this review. But this book let me down, I was excited to read it. Especially considering how grand everyone is making it out to be. Experiences like these tend to make the heroines strong and independent. Individual. She's so not. She felt so flat and boring. Same with Jason. No one in this book reacts the way they're supposed to, and by that I mean normal people reacting to these situations. And what guy texts "that's debatable!" Yes. Exclamation mark. Who are these people?! This book just made me angry. Sorry for all the people that obviously don't see any flaws with it but I'm not a fan.

Beyond Control was not my favorite book. The writing was the style where the author is way too descriptive. Way too many details that don't matter. The style that I really don't like. I can never figure out exactly what it is that drives me crazy, but it is the description. I can never quite figure out what it is, how the author is describing things differently than what I like, but it annoys me. The story is set in Seattle and at the beginning it felt like the author just kept putting in references, or making small scenes that reference something in Seattle, just to be like look! It is Seattle!! See! It is Seattle!! It was like I get it, but you don't have to go out of your way to try and make the location the location. It just seemed a little forced and a few of the things made me pause like really? For instance how bicycles are the main mode of travel in Seattle. Haha. Sure. There is a bike culture there, and some people do ride bikes from outside the city to work, but main mode of travel? It is a laugh. It is not like Copenhagen or anything. The bike storage in the building where I used to work had maybe 6 bikes in a day. Out of a 20 story office building full of tenants, that is definitely not the main way people got to work. I only know one person who rides a bike in Seattle, and that is just for fun usually in the mountains. Just small things like that annoy me.

The story itself...well Gabby was pretty immature and I didn't really like her that much. She doesn't want a boyfriend again after some not so good prior experiences, but nothing insanely horrible. She gets pushed into working for her dad, and her brother leaving when she was younger still troubles her. She meets Jason and is just crazy! She obviously likes him, but then when she finds out he is friends with her brother...well her brother must have sent him! It is the only reason. Um sure. She just is crazy, but they work it out. Then Jason keeps asking her out, and she keeps freaking then being all well he probably has a girlfriend and doesn't really like me. Sure, that is why he keeps asking you out. You can be insecure, but geeze louise maybe listen to your friends once and a while? She was just up and down and all over the place.

They did eventually work everything out and it was nice, but the writing still didn't make me care that much about anything. Plus the heart transplant/fiance's death. It was pretty obvious what would happen with that whole thing, and then it does. I remember when I realized it I just groaned and my husband was like what? I was just like I think I know what is going to happen...and yeah. It did, but still. They work it out and so yey I guess.

Then you get to the very end and oh my goodness I wished I had a physical copy of the book so I could throw it across the room. Seriously. I was so angry by the placement of where it ended. It was horrible, a terrible place to end the story. I mean if you still wanted to include what happened then fine, end it with the text. Don't end it after that at just a random place, just the exact moment when you find out what is going on. Really? I mean you want a cliffhanger fine, have a cliffhanger. But don't end it there. It is like ending it mid conversation or something. Who does that? It made me so angry! It made me not want to read the next book I was so angry. And by the way, the next book doesn't start where this one leaves off. It goes back to when this book started, or somewhere around there, and tells the story of someone else. So I guess you have to read the entire book to see what happens...super lame! I read the whole stupid book and then it just ends in the middle of a scene? I was not a happy camper at all. Like I said, if it would have ended with the text I wouldn't have liked it, but I wouldn't have been angry with it. So I won't be reading the next book as I am too annoyed to even want to read through another book to maybe find out what happens. Ugh.

I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am writing a review. This book is a cliffhanger and I hate them but this is a great romantic read with lots of rollercoaster emotional ups and downs sprinkled with laugh out loud humor. I loved Gabby and Jason's story even though I felt it ended abruptly and I felt like I was left dangling in the air it was worth the read.

Sometimes there are things that are beyond control. Beyond his control...beyond her control...beyond anyone’s control. That is just the way life goes. Nothing is certain. We must appreciate what we have in the here and now. Especially when it comes to love. That is the lesson that Gabby has to learn the hard way.

This book was something else. I loved it oh so much and was happy with every aspect of it up until the very end. Well not so much the end...but I will get to that in a bit. For now lets focus on Gabby and Jason. From the moment their eyes meet something sparks between the two. It is absolutely undeniable. For some strange reason neither one can get the other out of their head. This love is better than the love at first sight books. This was told to perfection.

But it won't be easy for them starting out. Life has a funny way of getting in the way...whether it be in the way of family or the ghosts from their past. But their story is one you won't want to miss. It is hauntingly beautiful and it needs to be told.

Ok remember that ending I mentioned earlier? Yeah, it tore me up. Sometimes happy endings only happen in the movies. Whatever will come of these amazing characters? My heart is very near shattering...I just need to know it will be ok. Will those affected be able to move on? Will more hearts be crushed? Now, hold on. I know what some of you are thinking…that this ain’t a happy ever after is it? Well for some it is and some…well, not so much. But please don’t let that stop you from reading this one. I swear you will want to. And it will only make the anticipation for BEYOND DOUBT that much more. I know I am eager for it to be out already, that is for sure.

BEYOND CONTROL is such an emotional read. A literary roller coaster. A must Read. Well done Bolton!! It was awesome, amazing, and at times agonizing. But should I have expected anything less from this stellar author? I think not. Don't miss out on this one!

I love all the books I read by Karice and this one was no exception. Jason that little sex on two legs I loved him, "it'd be kind of fun to see how ornery I could get you at the coffeehouse or somewhere, maybe dinner?" I think Gabby has insecurities and she has a right to have them after what she went through, "it seems like you've got your hands full, and I'm not a fan of being one of many. That's not my style." Jason he's the kind of guy that can make any awkward situation a funny one, "I didn't know I was wooing you. Striking you? Yes. Wooing you? No." He's also an affectionate type of person, "I own the place. If I want to kiss a woman in the middle of the showroom, I can," he growled." I thought this was a stand alone type of book and well there was a cliffhanger (surprise surprise) I can never win I always like to get stand alone books that way there I won't have to tell authors like Karice if something doesn't happen in the next book she'll need a restraining order on me.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a big fan of cliffhangers. Matter of fact, I'm not any kind of fan of them at all... not in those old movie serials that played during Saturday matinees once upon a time, and definitely not in books. Don't get me wrong. This book is well-written, has an interesting enough story, good romance, and fine characters, but when readers make it to the last page, the author shoves them off of a cliff and leaves then hanging in mid-air. I'm telling you... no ending! Just a high-tension scene that pretty much ends in the middle of a sentence.

I get it. I understand how trendy trilogies have become, but I think a failure to give readers a feeling of satisfaction at the end of each book does both them and the series a disservice. And personally ticks off this reader.

Based on that no-ending ending, I give this book two and a half stars, rounded up to three. If you don't mind cliffhanger endings, you'd likely rate it a bit higher.

ARC Review **

So I got a chance to receive an ARC Copy of this new book by Karice Bolton to rear & review.

Totally over the moon and doing dances here, this girls work is amazing, I've been following Karice's Books since I first read the "Watchers Trilogy" and "The Witch Avenue Series".

I LOVE Karice's work, she's amazing.

We always have twitter banter going on whenever I read her books, its awesome :)

Fangirling soo much this year so far, far too many authors out their for me to LOVE!

***

Somethings are "Beyond Control"

Like having to watch your mother die of cancer at the age of 12.

Like not seeing you father as he's too scared to be at home, with the way my mother is.

Like when your older brother, your best friend runs out on you and never looks back.

This my friend is "Beyond Control"

In the beginning of this book we have a 12 year old Gabby and an 18 year old Aaron. Their dealing with a lot as their mother seems to be at the final stages of the cancer she has got. Aaron is trying to be the BEST brother, friend and father figure for Gabby during this heartbreaking moment in their lives.

I'd only read 2 pages and I was already in floods of tears, seriously Karice, the amount of tears I shed whilst reading your books is unnatural, I'm surprised I have any left to share in other books, but I somehow manage.

Then Gabby's world comes crashing down.

Her mother died

Her father spends more time away then at home

Her brother ups & leaves, without a word.

We are then transported 10 years ahead, where we have 22 year Gabby who works for her father in the Diary product business.

She lives in a nice condo with her college friend she met, Brandy.

In the past 10 years, Gabby has changed.

She's not the same 12 year old as she was back then.

She's different.

An ungodly illness and a messed up youth will see to that.

She see's herself as damaged, broken, a being who can't be fixed.

She has many scars that grace her.

And has sworn off men completely and is just trying to make it through life.

The storyline picks straight away as the girls are heading to a charity event, hosted by Gabby's father, their vehicle collides with another, and this is it people, we meet the HOT, elusive and droolworthy Jason.

It would seem Jason had taken an interest in Gabby straight away, he's cocky, obnoxious at times and such a sweetheart!

I wouldn't mind having a piece of Jason!

As all though the HOT guys in books have a past, history they want to forget. Yeah so I bet your thinking he's the sort of guy who likes to fool around, and add notches to his bed post, well truth be told, Jason is completely different. Yeah he may have slept with a few in his younger days but he then met his highschool sweetheart!

There are a few sections in the book I absolutely loved, so Yes, I am going to share them with you :)

(Gabby) - Apparently, it was best if I had very little time to myself at the moment because all sorts of crazy wanted to come flying out of me.

(Gabby & Jason) - He opened his mouth the say something but closed it slowly. As he looked into my eyes, I could see the pain behind his, and that't when I knew that some thins were just "Beyond Control" and always had.

(Jason) - "I didn't know I was wooing you. Striking you? Yes. Wooing you? No."

I usually don't like giving too much away to the readers as they will enjoy the book hell of alot more :) so don't hate me after what I've just said and left you reeling, trust me, you will be thanking me :) now get yourself a copy of this book NOW!

We embark on a story full of passion, lust, love, lies, deceit and family betrayal.

I soooo can not wait for the second book "Beyond Doubt" to be released! Get cracking on with it Karice <3

I absolutely loved this book and I am over the moon happy that Karice decided to go outside of her comfort zone to write it. I have read every book Karice has written and she never disappoints. Her ideas are unique. She can take an overdone genre and make it her own.

This book was just amazing. I loved how dysfunctional the family is. I loved how quickly I fell in love with both main characters. I loved how fun the supporting characters were. Their personalities were so believable and the entire time I read the book I just felt as if I was there, in the moment with them.

When the big twist came my jaw dropped and I wanted to kick myself for not thinking of it before I got to that point. Seriously, it should have been so obvious, but it wasn't! That, my friends, is what good writing does. And what I loved best about this particular part of the story is that I felt it. Deep down in my gut. My heart hurt, I was depressed, and all I wanted to do was get in my pajamas (oh shut up, who cares if I was already in them) and eat pint after pint of Ben & Jerry's. And possibly ungodly amounts of chocolate chip cookie dough. And brownies. And down a bottle of tequila. Or Patron Cafe. Or both.

But wait, there's more... Just when we make our way to the end of the story and everything seems to be going much better, the floor drops out from under you and you feel heart broken all over again. And for those of you who have read the story already, just a teensy, weensy spoiler alert - the first chapter in the next book in the series does nothing to alleviate it. You heard it here first, people. Get out the tissues!

Book Review: Beyond Control (Beyond Love Series #1)
By: Karice Bolton

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me that life happens as it's meant to no matter how much you try to control the outcome. And that trying to control life just prolongs true happiness. The story proves the healing of forgiveness. The story also reminds us how important it is to do what you love. It's proof that once you let go, forgive your past, and stop trying to control everything in your life the universe magically allows you to live the desires of your heart.

Another great realization from the book is how important it is to live life for you. It's not a selfish thing to do, it's what God intends for us to do. That is why when we do things that we truly want to do is when we are the happiest. I know it's tough because we get so accustomed to pleasing others that we don't even realize it's not for ourselves. Truly a great read, a soul refreshing read!

I'm picky when I download contemporary romance freebies for Kindle, but I loved the romance in Witch Avenue series and I hoped Karice Bolton will weave the same magic here.

Instead I got a spoiled rich brat who kept talking about her independence and how she didn't want to be dependent on her father's money while:
- Working in his form in a privileged position
- Living in an expensive suite with a hot tub on balcony
- Accepting expensive custom-made bikes as a present from daddy (and designer dresses and shoes)
Oh yeah girl, you definitely wanna make it on your own. I wonder why your colleagues feel resentment...

Beyond Control really knew how to press my buttons. Unfortunately all the wrong ones. I didn't feel the chemistry, I was only annoyed.
So I gave up. Life is too short to waste it on books I do not enjoy.

I want to scream...how dare she leave us with that Damn cliffhanger Like that....I could cry...again. This was a very good book about following your dreams, believing in love, and forgiveness... I definitely did not get enough of Gabby and Jason...not by a long shot. And as far as Aaron and Brandy go...I can't wait for them to have their own story. I completely feel short changed..not because it wasn't a good story but because I definitely did not get enough. There is another book coming out continuing Gabby, Brandy, and Lilys stories but one book first seem like enough for all of them. I wish they were separate books do each. I just know I NEED more Gabby and Jason. Hopefully we don't have to wait forever.

I wasn't expecting such an involved beautiful story just based on the title. Such incredibly developed characters you really get to know. I loved Gabby and her fierce, but realistic personality, who has endured so much but never comes across as pitiful. I think we'd all love a friend like her. And Jason.....well....like most leading men in a story, he's a dream come true. But this dream is also someone realistic. He could be any guy you pass on the street, with a heart wrenching backstory. And when these two stories intersect.....it's a beautiful thing. I loved the easy flow, the family dynamics and the fact that nothing felt desperate as they do in so many romance novels. I'd love to see this on the big screen one day. I think it would give "the Notebook" a run for its money!

Miss Gabby...... Dislike..... ALOT! This book wasn't bad I guess for a freebie, but I would of been upset if I would of paid for it. I found Gabby highly annoying. If I had to describe her in 3 words they would be 1)immature 2)whinny 3) weak. She was a baby about everything and I almost felt like everyone had to coddle her. I really don't care for cliff hangers in general but I HATE it when I get a cliff hanger in a book I didn't really care too much for. Even if I don't intend on reading the other in this series, I may just have to do some snooping just to figure out the ending for my own piece of mind.

This was a freebie read from Amazon that had sat on my Kindle for 10 years. The trouble for us book alcoholics is, that their are too many books to read and not enough time to read them in!

This is the first in a series of books by this Author called Beyond Love. This book features thee female lead character Gabby Sullivan, she appears to have a privileged life some would say. With an over protective father, who has mapped her life out for her. She is feeling suffocated to a certain extent and needs to break free. When a stranger called Jason crashes into her life one day, he brings a new perspective into her life in more ways than one.

A bond is formed between the two that as you read, hints may go deeper than you think.

I enjoyed this story and the interaction between the main characters Gabby and Jason, and how the secondary characters were involved in their lives. . Whilst it was a sweet read, it kept me engaged when reading and I was left wanting to grab it again once I had put it down.

The Author mentioned the following songs in the book and I had to find the following song ~ Tidal Wave by Sub Focus, it was not a song nor a performer that I knew and I played it while I read the book. Gabby played it as she was driving home from work one evening. Nor had I heard ~ Love Somebody by Maroon 5, I did .know of them as a group though.

Okay story about a girl who had a heart transplant. She works for her Dad, but isn't happy doing so. On the way to an event, her driver has a fender bender with someone and she is instantly attracted to the man. He shows up at the event and then she learns he is the best friend of her brother who disappeared 10 years ago and hasn't been seen since. Or so she thinks.

Soon she finds out that her Dad has been lying to her and her brother for years. Even more secrets are revealed about her new man Jason.

It was ok, but it all felt a little too contrived to be really engaging.

Well, where to start.. I did so many facepalms and eye rolling that I couldn't rate this one more than one star.
Gabby was just too immature for her age when all she wanted to do was independence. And seriously I'm not sure what guy would willingly put up with her like Jason did.
Oh yeah and that ending.. Why only she was apologizing when she left? Jason did NOTHING to stop her, didn't even properly explain to her why he acted so distant when he returned..
Just not getting this one.. Nothing worked for me 🤷‍♀️ neither the characters nor the plot..

This one was good, I liked it from beginning to end. My only problem is that I think Jason still owes Gabby an apology, but I will overlook that right now. It was a nice read and a good set up for what appears to be a great series.

I wasn't really happy with the cliffhanger, but I was expecting something to happen, so I was just totally surprised.

I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!

Good storyline.

Really enjoyed the witch avenue series and the watchers trilogy, so thought I’d give the beyond series a try. Totally different genre, good storyline, only thing I was disappointed with was large gaps in the story jumping from one event to another, especially the end, when more detail would have been great. I will continue with the series as would like to know what comes next.

This was a long read with lots going on. Gabby and Jason seem to be a good fit. I didn’t expect Gabby to give up on Jason out of the blue. There wasn’t really a sign from her. I don’t understand the Aunt part as if she had something to do with Jason’s demeanor when he returns from his trip. For me, a lot of the story dragged on. There were some pretty interesting parts which I won’t say because it’s revealing the story. Though I give props to the author for writing a catchy ending.

So many books are ending without an ending so you will buy another it is getting ridiculous . If you are going to write a book that has a sequel there needs to be some anticipation on what is going to happen. So many books are ending without an ending so you will buy another. I have no interest in any of these characters.

I enjoyed the small roller coaster ride that this book was. The punchline is something that I saw once I found out Jason’s history, took awhile for it to come to fruition but I got it.
I don’t know if it was how tired I am or if it was actually the storyline of the book but I had some small tears in my eyes during the last chapter.
Is it worth reading the next book? Maybe!
