Tryptych #1

The Tryptych

Rate this book
The Tryptych is a novel spanning three generations of an enigmatic family through as many cities around the world.

It follows the stream of consciousness method and explores the story through the eyes of its dynamic characters.

It also unravels a mystery in the end.

So, relish this stimulating chronicle that explores the theory of benign neglect.

Liked the book very much. A fascinating read which revolves around the timeless talk of the old traditions and family values universal in nature. The story is compact, condensed version of a novel. Set in Kerala, Mumbai and London, all the characters are etched very well. They are mature people who have faced the life and are clear and forthcoming with its implications. The insightful reflections about the institution of marriage which demands a great deal of patience and tolerance during the initial years and the double standards in the social setup have been discussed in the narrative. The small but significant piece of information unravels a secret in the end and thus been removed a string of confusions and obscurations. Life's like that only.
Devoured every line with great interest and finished the book in one go.

My best wishes to the author for her work.

The Tryptych – stolen as the spoils of war from a church in Germany and kept as a family heirloom, this strange artifact becomes an object of fascination for the characters of this tale. Their disparate, interconnected lives are further linked by a universal code, namely one which subjugates women, keeping them from achieving their potential, tying them in to a life of servitude. Finding out how these two forces play out provides the catalyst which drives this intriguing tale.

Catherine Habbie kindly sent me this entire triology of novellas to read, and I have been enjoying them over New Year. It's the continuing story of Elsa, whose family extends across India and Britain and whose fate is inextricably linked to the Tryptych, a religious artefect. Though a family heirloom, it was originally stolen and it becomes clear that its presence is as much a curse as a blessing upon the family.

These are multi-viewpoint novellas with digressions into other prose and poetry. It's not a single narrative but rather a series of linked stories that come together very satisfyingly at the climaxes, particularly in volumes II and III where there are some dramatic revelations to be made. Elsa herself is the most sympathetic character as her Indian heritage is subsumed into a student, then working, then family life in the UK. But she hasn't entirely left her old life and family behind...

It's an exciting, fun and engaging trilogy, which shows a strong grasp of characterisation and a true understanding of human nature. Plus a laugh-out-loud funny line on page 48 of volume III.

Recommended.

I'd like to thank the author for my copies.

AUDIOBOOK

This was an interesting audio about spanning three generations of a family through the year and the mystery of a family heirloom taken during the war. The story is well narrated and I love the mix of characters throughout the years although it was sad to hear about the way the female characters were treated throughout the years due to marriage and traditions but I felt they all felt honest and it was an interesting little audio
