Update: Full Review http://bookishrealmreviews.blogspot.c...

Finished this so quickly I mean probably in like an hour. It chronicles the journey that Soma and the rest of his classmates must take when they are invited to a "friendship" cooking camp. As always there a challenges twists and turns. I'm loving this series and the anime. Once I read the 4th volume I will be doing a full review.

Soma and his classmates go to a cooking camp for a series of culinary challenges - fail one and you’re expelled from the exclusive Totsuki Institute! Soma and Megumi are teamed up again, this time to use the natural surroundings of the camp to create a traditional Japanese dish, and Soma meets a pair of new adversaries: the Aldini Brothers.

Eh… I think I’m about done with Food Wars. Creators Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki have basically levelled out on what they can do in this series and are now repeating themselves. Soma and Megumi have to make a dish against the odds - done it before. Erina makes angry noises at Soma - done it before. Dull and arbitrary nemeses - done it before. Another shokugeki (food duel) is announced - done it before. So these guys are basically out of ideas and it’s only the third volume!

There are just a couple of dishes to drool over and they weren’t that inspired compared to previous meals. That’s a minor complaint but it’s indicative of the staleness of the series.

As if to add insult to injury, the book is only about 75% Food Wars as the last quarter is filled up with artist Shun Saeki’s dreary debut manga for Shonen Jump: Your and My Romance Counselling. It’s about a shy boy who declares his love to the wrong girl and all manner of “charming” misunderstandings follow. Saeki classes it up with several panels of underage girls in bikinis and upskirt shots. Garbage.

The first volume of Food Wars is a fun read but I’d leave it at that - this isn’t a series that has the chops to go the distance. Food Wars Volume 3 is boring with little to offer - the quirkiness and originality is gone and what’s left isn’t worth bothering with.

We've now moved on to the unavoidable "school trip" that all manga set in learning establishments has to take, pretty early in the series too which surprised me. I think what I like most about this series is how it makes fun of shounen tropes. Pretty hilarious when one of the characters that's fighting with Souma says something like "until we meet again!" then you turn the page and they're sitting next to each other on the bus and Souma is like, "hey ... we meet again ..." 😆

I like this series; it's not super over-the-top but it's not boring either.

The volume ends just as it was getting good. If only the space allotted for the side stories was used to add one more main story chapter, and then it would have been a lot more substantial.

I really loved this volume which was the beginning of my two favorite arcs in the anime (adapted from this manga). The heart-warming nature, plus character development, of these two arcs are great stuff. Looking forward to them in the next volume or two.

Closing out the volume were two short stories. One a funny scene that the anime briefly showed, and the other a completely unrelated short story. Unfortunately the short story had no ending. *Grumblegrumble* I hope the ending is in future volumes.

Good stuff.

This was an enjoyable volume that ended on a high peak, leaving one wanting to read the next volume soon. I would immediately do so, if I weren't also reading the Miracle Girls series right now. I would love to catch up on Food Wars ~ Shokugeki no Souma soon, and watch the anime as well.

In the first part, Soma and Tadokoro pair up. We all know that Megumi is a weak cook on her own. Luckily, she works well as part of a pair. Her and Soma easily win the Nature Challenge.

But, the second challenge finds them working separately, and Tadokoro gets expelled for slightly changing a recipe to better it. This upsets Soma, and he issues the head chef of that challenge a "shougeki" notice meaning that he wants to battle him one-on-one. If Soma wins, he demands that Megumi not be expelled from camp/school. This ends the main story of this volume.

There is also an enjoyable short story about 2 friends that refuse to admit how they feel about one another. They end up telling one another they'll give each other romance advice. He pretends he wants to confess to another girl, but he cannot do it. She overhears him saying this to the other girl, and then, tells him she has a crush in someone. We know it's him, but he doesn't. She doesn't straight-out tell him, but her actions speak well.

Mmmm

Mmmm

How can a story about a culinary school be this exciting? I mean, I like fried fish as much as anyone, but I never thought a decision to use crackers for breading would be so rousing.

I enjoy this series way too much. It is pure silliness, but I get sucked in every time by the likability of the characters and the over-the-top dramatics. This volume has an excellent back-up story to boot.

Actually preferred this third volume to its predecessor, perhaps because the focus is moving more onto the food testing (gathering ingredients in a difficult situation and making a dish - HxH anyone?) and less on gratuitous shots of the female characters. I still don't really care for or have that good a grasp of the characters, but this volume got my attention once more on this series.

another 4.5 stars for this one.. I'm really enjoying this Manga series!!! This time we take it up a notch and see the chef students sent to boot camp.. they are assigned almost impossible tasks to test their talents and endurance.. a little different from the first 2 as there's finally an element of romance in this one.. fun read, looking forward to the next instalment now..

More of the cliched solid same.

World: The art is solid, it’s typical Shonen and of course there is the lovely and I kinda feel gross to look at foodgasm pages (it’s both yucky and yuk yuk). The world building is solid, it continues the trend of this manga in giving you just enough for the story to progress, no info dumps here.

Story: The story is moving along as you would expect from a series like this, we have the camp portion of the story, which is eventually going to also lead to the beach portion. So the story is fairly cliched. The food and cooking portions are interesting and the recipes are certainly what’s keeping me interesting in this series. The rival is expected and so is the jerk teacher which is also expected. No surprises here.

Characters: Soma is still the cliched hero of a Shonen Food/themed book this is and that’s all there is to say, not much of an arc or depth so far. The support characters continue to have some development with Megumi getting more than Soma in terms of her backstory. New characters fall into the archetypes for this genre with not much creativity here.

Solid, safe and expected....but fun.

Onward to the next book!

Esto se empieza a poner realmente interesante, las competencias son la.mejor parte del manga.

Por cierto la historia extra no me gustó.

And now it has become repetitive. The same thing that happens in the first and second volume happens here as well. I understand that the title is "Food Wars", so I am to expect a challenge every now and then, but it gets boring over time. You know there is always going to be the Shokugeki, the unexpected triumph of Soma and the fan service. The only plus point is that there are new recipes, but it isn't enough to hook me to this manga.

To mě nasralo i u prvního booku.

I'm starting to enjoy this manga more and more. The competition between the students at this school makes the whole thing interesting. I like that Soma's character is so stress-free, no matter what's the situation

Je commence de plus en plus à apprécier ce manga. La compétition entre les élèves de cette école rend le tout intéressant. J'aime que le personnage de Soma soit aussi peu stressé et ce peut importe la situation.

More cooking techniques that we can find in here. Soma meets his rival (possibly future best friend or partner) named Takumi. More challenges reveals, while the story also goes to the history of each characters.

Vol - 3 What a wonderful journey so far.. i just love this series i know when i finish it im going to be heartbroken because each book i pick up makes me want to read another one to see what happens next. Which coming from someone who usually likes the naruto battle style thing or the jojos bizarre adventure style its a little different.
