Simon carr is, well he is me, hello. I write comedy Sci-fi and horror books. I started writing in 2018. I am severely dyslexic, on the very high end of the scale. So, writing a book was just me being defiant really, doing something I ought never to have been capable of doing.
I really enjoyed writing my first book, Space And Stuff, so I carried on writing. That makes it sound a lot simpler than it was, but after a lot of learning and editing; so much editing! And going through proofreaders at a rate of knotts, I got my books to a standard that only made a few grammar Nazis heads explode; so it will have to do.
I am from Blackburn in the UK, born in the summer of 1976. I have actually won three awards for my books, I know! I was as surprised as you are. If perfect grammar is your thing then you might want to give them a miss, but if you like satire and goofy scenarios I might be what you have been looking for.
Okay, the Simon Carr disclaimers: If you are a grammar Nazi or require perfect spelling stop right now and don't even bother with the review.. The story will make your head expode. There are large amounts of "adult language", you decide. If you are a stickler about harmonious plots with no nonsense or plot holes, you have to decide if that peccadillo matters more than a fun adventure with caring and friendship and the possibility that you might literally laugh out loud.
Khaos is trying to destroy Earth, the solar system, the universe, and the multi-verse. It is up to Karen 2 from the Simon Carr novel KAREN, and Bob Dent and Fred the semi-gelatinous Blob from Bob and the Blob to be the Apocalypse Blockers they are destined to be. They needed to join up with Rick Toenail from the Rick Toenail stories and undisclosed other Apocalypse Blockers to have sufficient power to stop Khaos. But, it takes a big coincidence and a lot of adventures before they get the chance to join them. So many, in fact, that won't happen until another book comes along. And the coincidence? I quote from the story:
"Fred interrupts, “Bob, the likelihood of us travelling to an uncharted part of the universe to find just one person in amongst what must be an unpronounceable number of people, and it being the second person we meet is quite small. Things like that only ever happen in very badly written sci-fi stories and I think we all know that we are not in one of those.""
There are outrageously silly bits on almost every page and the satire may slap you senseless. This is comedic science fiction at its finest. Oh, did I mention romance? Karboben has more romance than any other Simon Carr novel I have read. Almost three pages worth. In a row. But, this is sci-fi, not one of those mucky romance novels despite all that time devoted to it.
KarBoben (Apocalypse blockers) interesting title - with a heavy clue of what this novel is about. One thing I have learned with novel with Simon Carr - is that you have to have a good sense of humor. Carr always writes with a satirical pen. I don't know if he has a certain store that he buys them from. I am not sure if all of that comes out of his brain, or that he might have a magical pen creating all of this chaos! The premise of the entire novel is that The Multiverse's first power couple were once a lonly queen and a king who had lost his kingdom. Now if you can wrap your mind around the multiverse, and that multiverers of the multiverse were sent out in an attempt to save our multiverse, then you are the genius of all time, or you have one warped mind. Hense back to the theme of the story and the author. As you tred through this story, be prepared for downright out loud, rip roaring laughter. Sometimes I would read a paragraph and say "you what?" not meaning to say that out loud, then I had to share and two people were cracking up. Then all that noise brought in the teens and so on and so on. Simon actually brought that whole messy universe into our front room. Thank you, Simon! I really enjoy the work of Simon and will read more from this author in the future. He creates the type of novel that allow us to escape from the world that is out there, and leaves us in a place where we can not take anything to seriously. I received this novel from StoryOrigin. The opinions are completely my own.
This, as is usual for Carr, was a complete hoot! Part of the Apocalypse Blocker series, this book in the epic space opera to end all space operas, or so it would certainly appear, is beyond hilarious. Carr's sense of humor is without a doubt not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but if you love good old fashioned fun and hilarity, this will be your shtick. Having read several, but not yet all, of the Apocalypse Blocker books, I'm still piecing the whole together, but it's so worth the read, even not in order--it's probably even funnier reading them all out of order! Carr's wit is charming, and his charms extend to include his readers in all aspects of the world in which we engage. Absolutely and absurdly brilliant content, characters, and world building. I can't recommend any more highly than that, unless you are the most dull and boring humanoid on this planet or any other!!
Khaos is coming and only the apocalypse blockers can stop it from destroying all the worlds in every dimension. How they do it is anyone’s guess.
Bob and Fred are sent out into the universe to find and recruit the other blockers spread around the dimensions and first is Karen, queen of the Hobean complete with her battle knickers.
What follows is a hilarious tale that has laugh out loud dialog and the kind of mad situations that would feel right at home in the mind of former Goon Spike Milligan (ask your dad\grandad)
The characters are wonderful, the situations sheer lunacy and the whole thing is just completely mad.
This is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but for anyone who likes their sci-fi laced with a large dollop of insanity then this is for you. It’s probably not recommended that you read it on the underground or they’ll be escorting you from the train at the next stop.
The author should be hailed as a genius or put in a strait jacket for all eternity – I’ll leave it up to you to decide.
There are some books you read for education, there are some you read to touch your heart, there are some you read to give you thrills and chills, and then, there are the books by Simon Carr, that you read for sheer enjoyment. KarBoben doesn’t disapppoint there. I honestly don't know what goes on in his head, or where he pulls the idea for his books from, but I sure hope he continues. You can't beat his books for their pure entertainment and joy of reading. I picked up a free copy of this novel and I'm so glad I did.
This book is a hilarious romp through space and time. The characters are well designed to carry out the sometimes absurd actions in service of the story and humor. The author has a great touch at keeping the story moving while loading it with satire and hilarious action. I recommend this to all adult readers with a sense of humor.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was delighted to discover multiverses, home for those of us who never believed in 'reality' in the first place.....but alas!! These wonderful phenomena are in peril! of extinction, and only the Apocalypse Blockers can save them from Khaos. These laugh out loud characters and situations are like a humorous satirical tsunami on steroids.
This is no adventure for wimps or traditionalists.....plenty of mundane sagas are around for them. This adventure is for phenomenonologists with open minds and hearty laughs.
Laughing out loud before I finished first chapter . and never stopped laughing until the end. except for chapter 15. I did stop there for awhile, Only because I had to stop reading. My ribs were hurting and i couldn't see thru my tears. Brilliant. I received a free copy of this book for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
OMG. I just loved KarBoben. I laughed all the way thru. The characters are amazing and very well written, I could hear the sarcasm in their voices while reading this book. Simon Carr is one of my favorite authors( definitely in the top 5). I would recommend this and all of his books to everyone who loves to laugh.
This time around the amazing Simon Carr writes another hilarious story. The characters plot and overall story is insanely ridiculous as always. The characters are fun, and you won't stop laughing. I cannot wait for the next book from Simon! Audio Version: Christopher Adams does a great job with this title and each character.
Another great addition to the series. I love the characters and how blunt they are. I love the thought of Karen’s battle pants. She is such a chav it’s fantastic, she even has a bright pink spaceship to prove it. It still makes me laugh that she’s a queen. I’d have loved if Rick toenail could’ve made an appearance but I look forward to seeing what he’s up to in the future. Bob is a legend!!!
This tale follows a couple were once a lonely queen and king. They are about to become the multi universe first power couple. A great take. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This satirical space operetta is full laugh out loud moments and hilarious hijinx. Another great work from Simon Carr's Apocalypse Blockers multiverse.
KarBoben takes us back into the battle against Khaos for the universe, every universe in the multiverse. If you have already read or listened to the other Apocalyse Blockers books, then you know what to expect. This book continues in that same vein. If you have not yet read any of the other books, I suggest you start with the first one or you will probably be very lost.
In this story, along with Khaos trying to destroy to multiverse, we also have a love story, for Khoas' attempts bring together a lonely queen and a king who has already lost his kingdom. But, don't worry, this is not a typical romance.
With similar comedy and random tangents, Simon Carr delivers another part of the struggle to prevent Khaos from destroying the universe. As with his other books, I think his books are much better listened to on audiobook as opposed to being read. That's not to say that you shouldn't read it if that is your only option, just that his stories come across so much better when listened to.
For this book, I was somewhat disappointed with the narrator - Christopher Adams. I don't know whether this was Adams's first audiobook or what, but it definitely fell short of Carr's other works. There were several places with recording mistakes, whether they were misreads or repeated lines, but it was clear the narrator didn't have anyone proof the audio before it was published. Other than that, while Adams did inject emotion into his reading for most of the book, there were several places where the reading was almost deadpan. It made it hard to keep listening to. If not for those issues with the narrator, this would be a 5-star review. Unfortunately, the narrator took me too far outside the book while I was listening to it, and that cost a star.
That said, if you have read or listened to the other Apocalypse Blocker books, don't let the narrator issues be why you don't listen to this one. It's still a great story and is definitely worth listening to. It just wasn't as great as it could have been, and that was disappointing.
Simon Carr's writing is hilarious, and this book was no exception. I often feel like I'm on a carnival ride flowing from one hilarious scene to the next while listening to his stories in audiobook format. I am looking forward to more entertainment in Simon Carr's next book. I do want to state that there was some foul language incorporated in the story. Christopher Adams' narration was awesome, and his performance was entertaining. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
