I Told That Devil to take You Back

I was a big fan of the show Wynnona Earp when it aired on 📺 When I saw that Audible published an original story in that world voiced by the original actors I couldn’t wait to listen to it. This is the second story like this that I’ve listened to. I’m seriously getting a kick out of them. It’s so simple to picture the details of the stories when you have faces and mannerisms to put to the voices.

This collection of 6 short stories varied in characters. Each story had a lead in by Wynnona followed by a new tale about Doc, Wynnona, Waverly, Haught, Nedley, Mercedes and/or Jeremy. Even Rachel and old Wyatt showed up for a bit. All the little “slice of life” stories held the same feel of the show to them. They were fantastic!

This is a MUST LISTEN for any Earper.

* The stories in this book take place before the events of Wynnona Earp: Vengeance and you’ll enjoy them best if you’ve watched all 4 seasons of the show before giving this a listen.

I appreciate Audible for offering so many titles free to its members. I wasn’t familiar with the series at all, so I came in blind interested to see what it was all about. It is a collection of several short stories, all of which are pretty average in the quality of their telling. It’s also full of sexual innuendos and LGBTQ affectations, so be forewarned for content.

I think I'm in the minority for this, but it was too silly for me. The audiobook has a good cast and sound effects, but the storylines weren't compelling. Kind of a yawner.

Couple of short stories that can be read / listened to even by people not familiar with the other wenonna Earp books, just be prepared for a universe where everyone is gay... Bit too woke for me

** YOU NEED TO WATCH THE SHOW FIRST**

A lot of these reviews are from people who are unfamiliar with the show so I can see how they may be confused by the story telling and the characters in this audiobook. You have to know these characters to get them and yes this audiobook just throws you in with no backstory but I feel this was made solely with the OG fans in mind. So do yourself a favor and watch the show first!!

That being said, I really did enjoy this. It was awesome to hear it narrated by the original cast. No one can deliver the lines for these characters like they do, it just wouldn’t be Wynonna Earp without them. So that was the main enjoyment for me.

The stories were a bit cheesy but that’s how the show was so you have to take them as they are. I did really enjoy the story with Nedley and his wife. I think that one was my favorite. It was heartfelt and sad and beautiful all at the same time. I’m glad that he finally got a story of his own and we got to hear more about his family.

I also enjoyed the story about Nicole’s time waiting for Waverly. That one really hit the feels too because she was sad and angry and just trying to survive and adjust to life in the changed Purgatory.

Overall this was a great addition to the Wynonna-verse. And a special treat for those of us fans who really miss the show… If you haven’t already, go check out the mini movie they just released on Tubi!! Wynonna Earp: Vengence.

I wish this -- more of a collection of radio plays than a traditional audiobook -- were available before the Tubi Wynonna Earp: Vengeance movie's release. It connects several dots between the end of the original SyFy T.V. series and that movie, and some events of the movie would've had more emotional impact with this having already bridged the gaps.

Even factoring in times when the audio was formatted intentionally to indicate one speaker's distance from another, there were a lot of instances when the audio mixing was just wonky, when someone sounded distant but wasn't supposed to be or the music was obscuring the dialogue/narrative.

It was still wonderful to hear these actors embody their characters again. (And I would love to see video clips of them recording!) They're still snarky and engaging, and the stories are funny, emotional, intense, and absurd -- just as viewers of the show should expect.

So, I've loved Wynonna Earp every since I saw the first episode of the series and have done my best to keep up with every bit of story available out there, regardless of the format. So, when an audiobook popped up on my Audible feed and was voiced by the TV series cast, I was unable to resist!

Set after the events of the TV series, 'Tales from Purgatory' starts us off as Wynonna and Doc head on off on a holiday. Tim Rozon and Melanie Scrofano swap banter, stories, and misadventures on their way to...well, you'll see, but I promise it's worth a listen! The narrative itself employs the 'tale within a tale' concept beautifully, giving us a reunion of the entire main cast.

A fun standalone adventure but made even better by being familiar with the TV series (which you should definitely check out!).

Is this the audiobook equivalent to a graphic novel?
More of a radio play than an audio book, this Audible Original walks through 6 different episode-like stories from the TV show universe using the original actors’ voices and a few new characters. It was fun to revisit the characters and several of the stories were excellent (“I’m not gonna miss you” was one of the best WE stories/episodes I have ever consumed). I loved Definitely worth trying out Audible to listen to this.

On the other hand, listening to Tales from Purgatory just made me sad this retelling wasn’t viewable on TV as it rightly should be. Many of the stories played out like cannon fan fiction rather than seeming original, particularly the final “Biscuits” chapter (I find OC fanfic cringe but that’s better here with the official franchise stamp). I’d absolutely give Audible more of my money to turn existing WE fanfic into Audible originals with the cast narration, though!

Back in 2020 I binged "Wynnona Earp" on Netflix, so when I saw this short story collection pop up as a recommended title I thought I'd give it a go. I'll be honest, I did not remember as many of the characters as I thought I did, but this was still fun. More of a radio play than an audiobook, the stories are silly and adventurous. The best story in the collection by far was "I'm not gonna miss you." That story was beautifully written and performed, and many of the themes hit close to home as they reminded me of some of my own personal experiences.

Stories of Wynonna Earp and/or people around her. Each chapter (or part) is another story. If you are a fan of this character, you might like this audiobook. Also, if you like (a lot) sexual innuendos, this is for you. I find if boring, despite the narators doing their best with the material they got. The SFX are also good and immersive for headphone people.

Fun fact: Whoever added this title to Goodreads misspelled the mc's name!

As a longtime fan of Wynonna Earp, this was an absolute treat! Tales From Purgatory felt like getting brand-new episodes of the show, with all the humor, heart, and demon-fighting chaos I’ve missed. The original cast returning to voice their characters was perfect—Melanie Scrofano is Wynonna through and through, and Tim Rozon as Doc never disappoints. Getting more of Waverly, Nicole, and Jeremy was the cherry on top. I might be biased, but it’s an easy 5 stars from me!

I am but a simple woman…I see Wynonna and I’m immediately in.

If you’re a fan of the show but hated the movie, you’re gonna love this. It’s everything I wanted the movie to be. Same quick wit and corny humor. And it’s performed by the actual cast of the show too!

I fully expected from the last “episode” that there would be a spinoff announcement. I was a little sad there wasn’t, I would totally watch this.

What can I really say about this, I thought I'd give it a chance.
Made up of short stories, probably didn't help I've not listened to any of the previous ones (so lack the character knowledge, but doubt there is any more depth to them).
A lot of sexual innuendos, most not falling well or delivered correctly, although a few funny moments.

Audiodrama, not audiobook. Felt like a collection of leftover scripts or short arcs that wouldn’t work or couldn’t be fit into the tv series. Fun to revisit the world, but seems odd after the show has been gone for so long. On the other hand, the tv movie just came out on Tubi.

For the most part, the original cast returned, but some of them aren’t great voice actors.

I'm confused, tbh. I picked it up on a whim and where the audiobook is well-narrated and I did enjoy the stories, it feels like reading a book from the middle. Suffice it to say, I couldn't warm up to the characters. And that sort of ruined the expereince.

I'm not a fan of audiobooks but a big fan of the series so I obviously had to give this a listen. This definitely answered some of the questions we couldn't get from the special and original tv series.

Excellent voice acting from the cast.

Short stories to fill in the blanks and betweens of the series. I didn't enjoy that it was dolby atmos because the background was way too loud and sometimes it sounded like the narrators weren't talking into the mics

DNF…I’ve never listened to the Adventures of Wynona Earp, so I was a little lost. I got about half way through but it just wasn’t for me. I didn’t rate it because the presentation was good, the storyline fine, but it just wasn’t my thing.

This book was performed by the cast members from the TV show. It was interesting and fun. The stories had some humor to them. I liked that. The characters' voices were spot on. I had a good time with this.

I looked forward to revisiting the world of Wynnona Earp, especially when I discovered that the audio dramas collected here would be voiced by the actors who originated the characters. Unfortunately, the stories lacked any real depth. Instead they were more a vehicle for ribald humor.

Love these characters and this world so much, the production was so good. I felt it helped give context, set up and wrap up serval storyline’s very well, especially with the last season of the show feeling so rushed.

This was an audio book and the stories and voice acting were fine. My issue was that too often the music was so intense it was difficult to make it the words. It should be rebalanced.

Audible version. Sounded like a cheezy western but so hard to follow, maybe not. Some voices hard to understand. Read like a play script and should be kept for that purpose.
