A romping fast-paced fantasy adventure with a ridiculously overpowered main character in the trope of Shrek and One Punch Man.
Book Two of a duology (complete).
The final half of the adventure continues with Thomas and friends delivering desperate refugees to the land of the elves. But chaos brews in the wealthy kingdom, from mysterious threats at the border to assassination attempts on Thomas’ friends. Goddesses, monsters, demons, and much more are packed into this thrilling conclusion.
Hi, I’m Ben. I live in Kansas City with my wife and three kids. I’m a software developer for CarePortal and I strive to reflect Jesus with my life. I write fantasy stories that are fun, fast-paced, and full of adventure.
It’s a real pleasure to have a story in this genre that actually ends. That being said, after quite liking the first half of the series I felt let down here.
We’ve traded the dry wit and creativity of the original for for a formulaic and predictable conclusion. I still like the characters and writing style, but the sheer banality had me skimming large sections. The ending was particularly anti-climactic.
I still recommend the series if the blurb sounds good to you.
This one didn't clamp down on the multi-POV issue the last book had, indeed it seemed that more time was spent away from the MC.
Overall still good, with some nice and some humorous moments, but didn't grab me the same as book 1. Nice ending though, and I like that not everyone has to take a dozen books to tell a fairly simple story.
I liked this story, but it felt very rushed. I feel like a lot of plot lines were rushed or ignored, sarah going to that magic school to get strong enough for Thomas to notice her being the foremost of those unexplored story lines. Also, the way Rankel died seemed extremely anti climactic.
While the first book: Overpowered Dungeon Boy, was really good and read like a fun kid's adventure, this one crossed several lines.
It's still fast paced and does a fair job of bringing everything together, but to bring everything to a close, it got a bit choppy. Thomas' choices takes him on several random rabbit trails, so the other characters tend to get left behind. The battles are fun because they border on ridiculous...
Sensual scenes are more blatant and rather inappropriate for a book aimed for young readers... The goddesses hardly wear anything and flirt a lot with Thomas; A cursed elf is healed but in the process his privates are exposed; Thomas accidentally records himself having a full on wee AND later unintentionally looks full on down a female bosom. Plus, there are more unnecessary crude insinuations during conversations that became repetitive and annoying. There's even a dragon that can morph into human form with nothing but scales. A couple gets drunk and stumble into Thomas's room talking about their night together...
The author did a fair job condensing the story into two books instead of dragging it out. But it felt watered down with all the rabbit trails and crude scenes. The only real bright spot is Thomas's dog, Gina.
Decent story, my nit-picks, and highloghts from the review kindle app trashed
I wrote a whole review but amazon's kindle app erases it if you accidentally click back into the book. So here's the highlights.
There was a rewrite of many scenes that other reviews reference (some don't exist anymore).
The story ground a bit in the middle. It took me longer to get through it. Ultimately not that bad though.
The ending could have been better but it really wasn't bad as it is.
~~slight spoilers~~ Nit-picking
What bugged me was the goddesses. They refuse to step in for at least two existential threats in the course of this story. They didn't lift a finger for our MC's family or his time in the dungeon. Then the mc shows up with abilities he obtained outside of their efforts and fix things they've been wanting fixed. The goddesses get all up in arms about him and a device that already existed and was recovered independently of them. For these things they will go to WAR! Where were they before? He needs to watch his p's and q's because of what are arguably the goddesses' failings. The world's favric is being watched over by a bunch of children!
Not to mention I'm not sure how I feel about the truth behind the great northern cliffs.
Ngl, I expected a steady continuation of the series from the first book and I got waaay more than than that.
Depends on who you are, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I read a LOT of self-published books in this genre and all I can say is that it’s still a cut above the rest like it and I still immensely enjoyed the ending—suspension of disbelief and all—it’s still really sweet.
Without getting into heavy spoilers, I still have a lot of questions about what happens to some of the characters and some of the implications by the end…but eh, we’ll see if there’s a book three to re-examine those threads.
Overpowered Dungeon Boy is an absolute gem, earning a five-star rating for its non-stop action and enthralling storyline. This final installment in the duology takes Thomas's adventures to new heights as he navigates a world filled with political intrigue, mythical beings, and relentless danger. The mix of humor, reminiscent of "One Punch Man," and the fast-paced fantasy adventure makes it not just enjoyable but one of my favorite reads of the year. The book masterfully wraps up the saga with a balance of thrilling action and rich storytelling, making it a super fun and memorable experience for any fantasy lover.
First book was really good. Concept was new and kept people reading. This second one tho, not so much. This MC went from telling a mythical dragon to go shove its demands where the sun don’t shine in the first book to “oh no a random elf prince is demanding me to do things so I have to do it cause I don’t want to anger him” in the second book. That’s also where I stopped reading. Dude just wanted to live his own life and do his own thing, and this new one he had a whole character change. So yeh, as good.
It's not super original, or atmospheric, or whatever. But it is satisfying. We're only experiencing a young man's initial journey on his iwn, I wouldn't even call it coming-of-age since it's too short but it's fun and like all good comedies, every major character gets a happy ending. I even enjoyed how decidedly anticlimactic the final face-off with the big bad(dies?) was(were). Pacing reminded me more of a movie than a duology, would recommend for light/vacation/relaxation reading. Good for all ages.
Harem concepts are always disgusting to me. What made the books worst was the author added in mech concepts also. The book felt disjointed because there were too many different perspectives and bad timing spent on each one. It’s really disappointing because Thomas and the Magic were interesting. I just can’t stand every woman being “Gorgeous and scantily clad” vying for the main characters attention. It diminished the side character credibility and regaled them to being pretty side characters purely there to bolster the MC.
I personally didn't find the secondary characters to be all that interesting. The main story-line was still fun.
The last quarter of the book seemed forced, with its plot on rails. We can blame Fate though, so... okay?
The whole "split the party ark" was a bust. Thomas had to leave the elves to stop the big-bad wizard - a confrontation that lasted five minutes. And then there's the Titan. What a let-down. The author didn't seem to know what to do with this ark to justify it and ended up going with a Gundam- style Mecha that seemed to have little strategic impact on the battle.
This is going to be a bit of a short cheater review, but I'm going to dive back into the Kindle store to see if I can find more books by this guy to read.
I'm not British, but I would definitely call this book a rollicking good time.
There were a few things that I found surprising, but I can see why the author may have leaned in those directions.
Ben's books have been an absolute blast. I just tore through three of them in 4 days.
The second book is rarely the best book in the series, but that is clearly the case here. Please don't misunderstand me, the first boob was excellent; I loved it.
This sequel was better. Easier to follow, more coherent and the story just got better... And better. I could not be happier with the second installment of the series.
A nice end to this short series (both books could've been combined as a standalone too). Like the first one, some of the new side characters were a welcome addition. Plenty of action, some nice surprises and good pacing kept me interested. The revelations at the end could mean some follow up series as well.
Starting the series I didn't have great expectations but was pleasantly surprised by a story with characters that were written well and humor that had me laughing more often than not. The premise of overpowered main character was well balanced with social and humor based weaknesses.
A good book for what it’s worth and what type of book it is. Fun read
There are only two books in the series and they’re both very good. For what this series is worth I have no complaints. A fun fast read with a likable character and good world building. There should’ve been more to the series but these two books are well done.
Fantastic story! Author even put in a quick recap of first story, which is absolutely great and I wish more did.
The story itself is just phenomenal, a deliberately OP main character, that is clueless... But you know why and it makes sense and he gets better as he goes.
Hopefully there will be more stories, i know I'll be watching for them!
In the dame style as the first but one that rockets as fast as Thomas’ bolts to the finish. It went by quite fast but, in this case, I think a little too fast.
Stull a good two part book series that a lot of coming of age fantasy users will like.
But I would also love it were there 10 books to this story! However like all good tales, you sir could have done so much more or so much less but in the end this journey, with all its ups and downs ended perfectly. Just two words....Thank you. Now six more...On to check out your others!
This story of a young man who grew up in a dungeon prison getting to the real world was a fantastic fascinating read. By not living in the real world and having a limiter crystal, he is way stronger than anyone else minus the gods. The big bad was destroyed, so I think this was just a two book series.
I don't think even Piers Anthony could have written a better story. And he has always been one of my favorites. This was absolutely wonderful. Benjamin, keep it up you have a great future ahead of you. And I did not find one spelling or grammatical error in either book. I hope you have more like this!
Just as the title said, Overpowered Dungeon Boy. But a teenage boy that grew up isolated from the world and raised with honest and good values. Almost demi god like strength with a humble and caring nature.... That thinks a fight with scores of Hell Hydas is a fun time.
I’ve read both books. They are mostly a romp adventure. The author could have expanded them to 5 or 6 books. There are interesting concepts, a flowing story line a but it really need to be expanded. The characters needed more depth. Just the way they interacted was ok but could have been great.lots of potential but not fully fleshed out.
It is a very quick story which ties up several story bits. The pace is very steady and the story focuses on inconsequential minutia which is just relaxing with the over powered aspect.
Loved it, the way it all built up and came together to a cataclysmic finale. Gina stole a lot of attention with her hidden talent, never did get to find out Thomas's level, just sorry no more books to follow
It pleasant, fun, quick and all around enjoyable read. Decent character development, a likable protagonist, and enjoyable side characters. It'd be nice to see some more. But not a bad way to stop a series.
Wow, a complete story in only two books. Been a long time since I've had that experience. Had a great time reading these two books and look forward to reading more by this author.
Many books drag out the adventures until you are bored of them. This one doesn't do that. The book wraps up all the major plot threads nicely and leaves you with a slight Hunter for more. It's a fun, fast paced adventure. I Highly recommend!
Interesting storyline and it was well written too. The two are necessarily a matched set anymore. I enjoyed both books in this series and will be watching for anything else the author writes.
I very much enjoyed that series, sure the MC was overpowered. But unlike other series out there this MC wasn't an arrogant douchebag. A bit of an idiot at times but what 15 year old isn't an idiot at times.
