I was hoping that Malaysia can adapt Japanese pop culture and make it our own. I was inspired by the anime Outbreak Company where people make their own works rather than depending on the Japanese.
I may be new, but I will do my best to spread around this new kind of work in hope that many can follow. As well as making original works that all can enjoy. But I make seinen genre though.
You see, people with drawing talents should not be wasted, they are the gems in our midst, thank you to my illustrator to cope with my yapping.
As soon as I’ve stumbled to the release announcement of this book, I am very glad to know that I am not the only Malaysian who had decided to apply ‘light-novel’ writing style for my novel projects. Seeing this book’s cover, designed in PSP-box-game style, again I am glad to know that I’m not the only Malaysian who also attempted to write a RPG-game-themed story, which is popularly used among Japanese modern satire literatures; particularly in light novels. Therefore, I was definitely looking forward to read this book as a light novel reader myself.
However, the title itself is rather ‘controversial’, if I may say so. ‘Batang Gembira’, supposedly it was illegally direct-translated from English words, ‘joystick’. From the context of colloquial Malaysian language, ‘batang’ can also be related to penis. But, I was informed that the title was not from the author’s decision, but rather it was from the publisher themselves; LEJEN PRESS. Originally, this novel is supposed to be known as ‘PROJECT CHRONOSHIFT’. So, it makes me wonder what on Earth those editors were thinking when they decide such a name?
I’m not going to give any sorts of spoilers, though. If you’re curious to know, just go buy and read it. Or, you can just read the synopsis to at least get the gist idea of this novel.
All I can say after I read this novel is that, the author has long ways to go in terms of presentation. The idea itself sounds promising, using MMORPG elements in real-life technology; you become a Player and that actually is a career itself! This idea is very foreign, at least among Malaysian readers (except for ACG fans). However, there is one thing that I find to be very lacking, which is also a very common problem in almost every local sci-fi novels that I have read. And, it’s PRESENTATION.
Most local sci-fi novels have very promising idea bases, but they depend too much on ideas that it affects their works very badly, in terms of presentation. I would end up getting uninterested to read it further (but this book somehow managed to push myself to finish my reading!).
In ‘Batang Gembira’, the presentation is rather jumbled up and very forced. I could assume that the author was asked to re-write the story and keep it short! There are way too many terminologies and characters that I end up cannot remember most of them. Too many unnecessary descriptions that end up slowing the story pace especially during battle scenes!
However, I am not surprised with the descriptions, since it is a common writing style in light novels that I have read so far. You just simply need to tell everything from the protagonist’s perspective, and that can be very annoying at times!
Writing a sci-fi story requires a fast-paced presentation. However, the language, Bahasa Melayu, itself can actually become a main problem for writing sci-fi. Unlike the fast-paced English, Bahasa Melayu is naturally ‘slow’, which is one of the main reason why Bahasa Melayu suits the best for time-consuming and mood-emphasizing stories such as romance and slice-of-life.
As for the conclusion, I would suggest that the author to work extra hard on improving his writing style. Applying ‘visual writing’ would be the very best option for writing sci-fi in BM. It would be a pity for this book to end up fail to meet to its’ potential, thus becoming a half-baked work.
And, to LEJEN PRESS, I would suggest you to do some researches about light novel format. You should arrange the illustrations in accordance to the story chapters. You should place one illustration in every chapter of the story (besides the text that describes the illustrations!), and NOT at the chapter’s title page! I might sound fussy, but it IS how the light novel formats are ORIGINALLY organized.
It was a great story albeit rather forced. It contains the typical plot of a light novel (not something I'm fond of since the translated version is a bit off) or a manga. I don't know, I get the feeling that something is missing. I'd like to know what's going on, obviously. And, I can't keep track of the characters. Gosh. It doesn't help that my brain keeps translating every other sentence into English. I assure you, I usually read Malay novel with none of this hassle. But still, love, love the main character.
Bila nampak mcm nk klimak tapi dah tinggal sikit muka surat rasa hampa sebab mesti bersambung. Tak sangka boleh layan jugak genre macam ni. Hopefully Danial Aedy cepat2 buat sambungan dia.
mmg anime version.. haha.. puashati kalau banyak versi light novel kat malaysia. kalau nak import light novel jepun mmg lah pulus habis sbb mahal. tapi, jujur daniel edy tulis sangat detaile. tapi kalau boleh tryla buat kasi nampak tak terlali skema.. hehe.. pepe pun taniah for this novel
Peminat anime & manga mcm aku takdak masalah utk hadam buku ni. Cuma mcm tergantung citer ni. Watak utama tak tunjuk 'kuasa' sebenarnya. Sequel needed!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
