Length: 10 hrs and 1 min

Curator Dr. Louisa Hancock left behind Maine and her troubled past for Philadelphia and a job at a prominent museum. Just when it seems that Louisa’s new life is safe from her dark secrets, the body of a museum intern is found - the victim of a brutal and baffling murder.

Louisa realizes this is no random crime. And when another intern goes missing, the abduction is linked to the only man who has ever tempted Louisa’s heart - Conor Sullivan, the sexy owner of a Philly sports bar. Louisa’s past has taught her to be wary, but her heart refuses to believe Conor is guilty.

Now Conor and Louisa must dodge a police investigation - and their growing desire - as they race to find the real killer before another girl turns up dead. But trusting Conor could be deadly, especially as the evidence against him mounts…and as a merciless killer targets Louisa as the next victim.

What I enjoy most is a gripping mystery suspense thriller, a fast paced story grabbing readers’ attention at the beginning and keeping their interest until they last they turned the last page. “Midnight Betrayal” by Melinda Leigh easily fits this definition.

Melinda Leigh’s “Midnight Betrayal” introduces readers to an unknown antagonist in a rundown neighborhood in Philadelphia on the second page of her thriller. She keeps readers in the dark as to who the antagonist is and why or what this evil person’s intentions are until we get to the end of the story. This heart stopping story has the readers holding their breath with each change of direction of Leigh’s story line. “Midnight Betrayal” has well developed support characters adding to the main story and sub plots. Readers are never aware that the story has changed direction until Leigh decides to open our eyes to the change of scenery.

Leigh introduces us to one of the story’s protagonists, Dr. Louisa Hancock, at the beginning of the second chapter of “Midnight Betrayal” and the second protagonist, Connor Sullivan, enters the story at the end of the second chapter. Leigh does a marvelous job of providing her readers with the back story and the history of the two protagonists and continues developing their connection to each other from Leigh’s first book “Midnight Exposure” to the present. The reader is keenly aware of the friction between these two characters. Leigh keeps us in suspense as to how their relationship ends or evolves. Both the protagonists deal with trust issues and Leigh puts her readers in the middle of the conflict just to see if they can figure out what is happening. As Leigh begins to wrap the sub plots, readers think they have an ending figured out when out of the blue Leigh throws her fans a curve that no one sees coming.

We are always aware of what Lousia is thinking as Leigh lets us see the events unfold through Louisa’s eyes. In addition to Leigh giving us a story of intrigue and suspense, she gives us a story of unusual betrayal on many levels. Seeing how these betrayals are dealt with keeps readers on the edge of their seats for the entire story.

Melinda Leigh captivates her readers with a well written thriller that ties up loose ends from her first book and sets up her next story for readers to look forward to. It was easy to follow Leigh’s character and story development and it was refreshing that I never felt the need to go look for answers as her back stories told me what I needed to know. Readers will easily be drawn to this story of mystery and intrigue. They will find Melinda Leigh has written a must read story that has earned a 5 star ranking.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was a very good read. I especially liked the characters. Louisa worked at a museum. She was very intelligent and growing up had never really fit in with the other kids at school. Her mom died when she was young and her father kind of went off the deep end, leaving Louisa to be raised by her Aunt Margaret. Conor, however, having lost his parents at a younger age, was old enough to help his brother, Pat, raise siblings Danny and Jayne. The four of them were quite close. Conor and Pat run a bar together and Jayne waits tables. Even though Conor and Louisa come from totally different worlds, they are still drawn to one another.

When a female intern at Louisa's museum goes missing, suspicion falls on Conor. He drove the girl home the night she disappeared and her fingerprints are found in his apartment. He has a reasonable explanation but the detectives in charge aren't buying it. Especially since they also have the burnt body of another young girl, an intern, who went missing previously and who has ties to their case.

Louisa doesn't believe for a minute that Conor is responsible but knowing the police aren't actively pursuing other leads, she and Conor decide to work together to find the real killer. When another woman is killed, it becomes obvious someone is trying to frame Conor, but this time he has an alibi. The two police officers keeping him under surveillance can testify as to his whereabouts at the time of the murder. There is also a gang member who comes after Conor when Conor rescues a dog that appears to have been injured in a dog fighting ring. The young man is bound and determined to get the dog back and even trashes Conor's apartment above the bar in retaliation. It makes Conor wonder if the guy is the one trying to frame him. There is also the museum's curator and a university professor that Louisa has reason to question regarding the murders.

I liked the way the author caused the suspense to slowly build, adding little twists and turns along the way to keep you guessing. Every so often you got a glimpse into the killer's head as well and I have to admit I never saw the ending coming. It was a total surprise and topped everything off quite nicely. Louisa was independent but also vulnerable in many ways. An incident from her past has made her cautious where Conor is concerned. And Conor has one failed relationship under his belt. He's not looking for another. It was very entertaining, watching as they worked their way up from friends to something more serious. This is one I would most certainly recommend to fans of romantic suspense.

This is the third book in the Midnight series; I haven't read any of the previous books, so it is a Stand alone. I chose to read this book because it is set in Philadelphia. In this book former child genius now Curator Dr. Louisa Hancock has moved from Maine; the location of her previous job and adventure, to Philadelphia. Almost immediately she and her museum are thrust into a mystery with missing interns, missing replica weapons and Celtic symbols carved into bodies. When her personal intern vanishes she ends up reunited with Conor Sullivan; they met in Maine earlier in the year. Soon Conor is the main suspect in the disappearance of the interns.

The book delves fairly deeply into the personal histories of Louisa and Conor. Louisa is a bit of a hot mess; her family life and relationship history has been damaging. Conor's had his own set backs and problems.

I probably liked this story more than it deserved because it was set in Philly.

In the last book we saw hints of something happening with Louisa and Conor, so when they were front and center for this book I was happy for it. I liked that once they were in each other's presence again, each of them took advantage of that and pushed for more. While I hated that people were being hurt around Louisa and what was happening to Conor, I liked that it put them together as a team and made them rely on each other. Even the dog seemed to bring them together.

At the end I was stunned with who the bad guy was the the reasons. Such a waste! I did like that Louisa and Conor are taking things a step farther and like that Louisa set boundaries with her family. Things are really looking up for her!

I skipped the second book because I didn't think I'd 1) enjoy it and 2) miss anything crucial. This may or may not have affected my enjoyment of this book. I'm short on time again, so bullet points it will be.

What I liked:
1) The H. He didn't do casual sex, which is a big departure from more CR these days. He was also the main pursuer of the relationship which was nice.
2) The mystery was a doozy. Colour me surprised! It wasn't mind blowing, but I didn't guess the identity of the killer and that says a lot.
3) The h wasn't a shy virgin.
4) There was no OP drama (if you don't count the numerous times the H thought about his ex).
5) The multiple povs, including that of the killer.
6) There was no instalove.

What I didn't like:
1) The h is trying to become a different person, but she's yet another super socially awkward character that seems to be dominating romance these days. She doesn't stutter a lot or do any of those silly YA/NA things that those kinds of heroines seem to do in the presence of a hot guy, but she does say the wrong thing a lot and was embarrassed by it.
2) The aunt was a completely flat character. We don't know why she was the way she was, but she was a little OTT. And the whole situation with her aunt wasn't really resolved and that made me mad.
3) The H mentioned his ex a lot. How she messed him up emotionally. How he didn't really trust women anymore because of her. I didn't really need to hear about that so much.
4) This book doesn't paint law enforcement in a very good light. I know that the police are real people and they're doing their jobs with some very real restrictions, but the author made them look a little overzealous and incapable of being unbiased.

So, 3.5 stars for the mystery, 2.5 for the romance, and 3 stars overall.

As with the previous two books in this series the author opens with grisly murder that grabs your attention and then rolls into introducing us to the main characters, who we’ve met in the previous Midnight Sacrifice, and keeps your interest until the shocking conclusion.

The Celtic theme was alive and well in this third book but with a little different twist this time. A history museum is the backdrop with Curator Dr. Louisa Hancock baffled by the disappearance of two of her interns. In her quest to getting answers she reconnects with Connor Sullivan. Louisa and Conner have a bit of a history from the previous book. The author gives enough of a back story if you haven’t read the previous books you wouldn’t be lost but I recommend reading the other books in the series as each one has had one of the Sullivan siblings as one of the major characters.

Conner and Louisa end up in the middle of the investigation when the first girl turns up dead and Conner becomes the main suspect. It was refreshing that most of the angst in the book was from the suspense part and not the romance part. Conner and Louisa both have baggage from their past but they had such chemistry and decided to take things slow that it felt more realistic. There was also plenty of supporting characters, some you really liked and others not so much.

I love trying to figure out who the killer is and this time I didn’t do a very good job. That’s a major plus in my book : ). This story enraptures from beginning to end and I recommend it to romantic suspense lovers.

Midnight Betrayal is the third instalment in the series and although it can be read as a stand alone, it features characters we have already met in the series. Dr. Louisa Hancock had to leave her previous job and take a lower position and paycheck in order to continue working in a Museum. It seems like bad luck has followed her after an intern goes missing only to turn up dead. It seems like it may be related to an other disappearance and Louisa is taking no chances, she contacts Conor Sullivan with her suspicions believing he is someone she can truly trust, especially after what they have already been through together. Conor however has his own ties to the case and the Police believe him guilty. Can they get to the bottom of what is really going on or is Louisa placing her trust in the wrong place and Conor is actually behind the brutal crimes?
I found this to be a little slow and for lack better word Boring. I have read 115 bookd this year so far and This book turned out to be one of the worst I have read. This is like her first book of the series, slow. The only book I enjoyed in this series by Melinda was the second one. Read at your own risk.

Wow.

Louisa Hancock and Conor Sullivan reunite in the latest and possibly the most compelling of the Midnight series when a brutal murder of an intern occurs after the theft of an artefact replica. From here onwards, it's a series of twists and turns in the plot as Louisa and Conor find their way back to each other amidst the growing danger.

Beautifully written with relentless action and breathless suspense, I was certainly thrown for a huge loop when the killer was finally revealed. After the disappointment of Midnight Sacrifice, I was thrilled with both Louisa and Conor and loved how their story developed throughout the book - kudos to Leigh for making 2 people from 2 very different worlds come together in a way that I found poignant and believable.

Definitely a keeper and something I'd be going back to read again...and again.

I did not see that coming

I was thrown completely by the villain and I am here for it. I love reading books by ML. The characters, world building, action and romance are always balanced and provide an entertaining time.

Here we see Conor who we meet in the first two books of the series and the museum curator that we met in the last book. They both are under suspicion for a new set of crimes and believe something else is afoot. So, while trying to figure out their attraction, they also work on solving the crime. The addition of Kirra is perfection and I recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense.

I enjoyed this story that had all the ingredients of a good romantic suspense with a decent plot, plenty of action and a building romance plus a heart warming dog. There were plenty of suspects yet I was totally surprised at the ending. A co-worker goes missing at Dr. Louisa's new museum job and she seeks out bar owner Conor who was the last person to see the co-worker.

This book grabbed me from the beginning and I didn't come close to guessing who the murderer was! Dr Louisa Hancock was unfairly fired from her job as a curator at a museum and has moved to Philadelphia for a job at another museum. Her life seems to be going along fine when an intern from the museum goes missing. Louisa realizes this crime is not random and it somehow ties to Conor Sullivan, the owner of a sports bar she knew briefly from her past. Louisa does not trust easily but she is attracted to Conor and doesn't believe he could be guilty. When another girl ends up missing and the police zero in on Conor, Louisa and Conor decide they have to conduct their own investigation. Can they find the killer before another girl dies? Another winner from Melinda!!

I loved this thriller. The author keeps you at the edge of your seat, as you try to figure out the sadistic murderer, and the reasons , behind the murders. I read over thirty chapters, and still was not sure. So many diversions, and false trails. I also loved the slow building romance, than began in the last book. There was nothing to dislike. I recommend this to anyone who loves a great murder mystery thriller. I really liked the two main characters, and trusted everyone connected to his bar; besides that all bets are off....These books are meant to be read in a series. This is book three of the midnight series. It is best to begin with book one, as I did. It is much more enjoyable...

So another one bites the dust. I wasn’t expecting much and was still disappointed. I finished though, so there’s that.
I thought the who done it although possible wasn’t plausible with the explanation we were given. I feel it was a plot device to fool the reader and it only made me roll my eyes.
Then there was the push/pull between the couple and that annoyed me. The way he chased her and the reasons she ran was a turn off. Ultimately it made me not care.
In the end, this book is for someone, just not me. Maybe it’s my mood. But I’ll give points that I finished it. I have one more in the series to listen it.
If I continue it’s because it a free read. So why not. Maybe it will get better.
I didn’t like the narrators choice of inflection for the characters. Connor sounded like an actor from Goodfellas and the women whiny. He’s a good actor, just better choices for the characters would be good.

Holy Cow, I’m gobsmacked. Midnight Betrayal was fantastic. Both Conor and Louisa have been burnt in the past and don’t trust easily. Conor hasn’t been able to get Louisa out of his mind and truth be known it’s the same for her. When a museum intern goes missing and Louisa goes to Conor about it things really start to heat up not only between Louisa and Conor, but a local gang member wanting his dog back from Conor, more girls go missing and Conor becomes the police’s prime suspect. The Midnight Series is getting better and Better and highly recommend you read it.

Dr. Louisa Hancock has just started over in Philadelphia, as the assistant curator at the museum. She has left behind a troubling past and experiences that cost her the job as head curator in Maine. She has moved into a lovely condo in Rittenhouse Square and is settling into her routines.

And she is trying to look on the bright side of things. Unfortunately, some recent events in her new job have made it difficult, beginning with the attitude of Director Cusack who is a bit contemptuous in his remarks to her. But even more disturbing: Rikki, an intern at the museum, has gone missing. And shortly thereafter, her body is discovered and the murder weapon appears to be a replica of a Celtic knife that is part of Louisa's exhibit.

As the police interrogate each of the employees, Louisa herself wonders if she might be a suspect. But when a second girl goes missing, another intern named Zoe, and the last place she was seen was Sullivan's bar, owned by Conor Sullivan, someone Louisa had met while in Maine, suspicions are turned upon him. Circumstantial evidence points to him, but it is clear to Conor and to Louisa that someone else is responsible. Is someone setting him up?

There are a host of potential suspects, including someone Louisa once knew as a teenager...someone with whom she had a difficult past. And then there is a professor who may have made sex tapes with the victims....

Rapidly turning the pages of "Midnight Betrayal" led me down some interesting pathways, and I loved watching Conor and Louisa connect with each other, a bit of joy in an otherwise miserable time in their lives. But when Louisa goes missing, and when we finally discover who is behind it all, I was totally stunned. I love when that happens, and that extra layer of mystery made this a definite five star read for me. Recommended for all fans of the author, and for those who enjoy romantic suspense.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 5
REVIEW:
They say lightning never strikes twice.
Or does it?
If you are Louisa Hancock & Conor Sullivan you might just start to believe that it does.

Wow. I am not even sure how to start this review other than to say “Murder is a dirty, dirty business and oh my good golly Ms. Leigh can write a book”.

As with all suspense books I try my best to figure out the who’s, the what’s and the why’s. But let me tell you Midnight Betrayal kept me guessing the whole time. To say I was shocked would be an understatement.

I could say so much about this book (which I loved). About this story (which I loved). About the characters (who I loved). About the scary, sick and twisted mind of a suspense author (which I love and am just a tad bit afraid of Ms. Leigh now ;D). But I really want you to pick up a copy of this book so I will leave you with this. Midnight Betrayal is an amazing read!!!!!!!

If you are a fan of romance suspense you really need to pick up a copy of Midnight Betrayal. If you are new to romance suspense or new to Melinda never fear you can read this book as a stand alone and not miss anything (although I would read book one and two, but I like to read my books in order. Plus you met Conor & Louisa in book 2)

Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author as a gift. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

Doctor Louisa Hancock thought that she had left her problems behind in Maine when she moved to Philadelphia but it looks like someone is killing young interns at this museum too. When another intern goes missing and Conor Sullivan is implicated, Louisa knows he didn't do it. They had met in Maine but it was a "wrong time, wrong place" relationship. Now that they are together in Philadelphia, it is the right time but being involved in a murder investigation isn't an ideal time to start a romance.

Both Louisa and Conor are wary of romance because of incidents in their past. Trust and open communication doesn't come easy to either of them. I did like watching love overcome their problems.

The mystery was well-done with lots of possible suspects for me to ponder. The chapters from the villain's point of view were quite chilling. The story had lots of suspenseful scenes and some quite humorous ones too.

I was a big fan of Conor's tough exterior and marshmallow interior. His need to help those who are helpless - from the college girl with the drunken boyfriend to the pit bull that had been abused - really showed his character. The abused dog and the problems surrounding her added depth and more danger to the story.

This was a great romance and wonderful thriller too.

3.5 Stars

I like the whole Midnight Series, the Sullivan Family and all the characters that become entwined in their lives.

I rated it 3.5 Stars because there could have been so much more intrigue and suspense if more time had been used following and building up the kidnappings and the story around the kidnapper/s rather than who had the more skeletons in the closet, who was more of an emotional wreck...

Since the story fits in so well to the series and I like all the characters, I will read the next one.

A good enough story

This book was a bit disappointing but a good story anyway. Connor continues in this book and he’s falling for the museum curator who was introduced in the previous book. Her associates are disappearing and turning up brutally murdered. Is there something in her buried past that’s the cause? Connor’s life also takes on weird twists and turns after he rescues a pit bull who needs him desperately. When the ending comes, you’ll say: “really?”
