Pages from the Pizza Crows: Odd Fiction, Book 1

Rate this book
In exchange for pizza, a beautiful crow delivered stories to my windowsill. I've collected those stories, here, for your amusement and observation.

"Bedfellows" follows the story of a boy and a girl who are attached at the hip by supernatural means. "Belligamy" tells the tale of a powerful curse forcing married men to fight one another in order to protect their brides. "Captured by Animals" details an author’s adventures spying on people in the woods to write his romance stories. "The Red Constellation" is Law and SVU meets cosmic horror. "Young Adult Series Simulator" tells the story of that date you went on at the bookstore. "F1" is about a pregnant horse. "Nine-Tenths an Ape" is "The Monkey's Paw" but in reverse. "Lethe" How old were you when you had your first memory? Maybe a little too old? "The Bright Idea Room" reminds you that it's the environment that kills you in the end. Not the serial killer. "Satan's Spies" is about a friendly group of businessmen and their obsession with strip clubs.

The author sent me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review – thank you Evan Witmer!

Pages from the Pizza Crows is an anthology of 10 highly unusual short stories brought together by a decidedly weird and wonderful premise: a crow brought pages of the stories to the author’s window in exchange for pizza. By altering the type of pizza each time the author is able to alter the quality of writing the crow brings to him:

“The crust controls the point of view; the toppings control the theme; the sauce controls the tone; and the cheese controls the probability of passing the Bechdel test.”

Each of the stories could be described as a little off the wall, but some are definitely odder than others – more like a particularly lucid fever dream or a hallucinogen-fueled trip – but in a strangely intriguing way. This is not your average type of short story collection.

My favorite story in the collection was ‘Captured by Animals’. Told from first person perspective, this concerns a romance author, who hides in the woods near campgrounds in order to overhear conversations he can use in his writing. He misses the punchline to one such story by growling loudly enough that the people he is eavesdropping on think there’s a bear in the woods. A very unexpected twist follows, which I found highly entertaining. There is also a talking owl and bear who are experiencing existentialist crises, bored by their surroundings and dissatisfied with their lives.

There are many instances of violence and gore in these stories, reference to rape, suicide and death of family members. The collection is not for the faint-hearted.

Tales from the Pizza Crows embraces surrealism to the extreme. The author’s imagination clearly knows no bounds. If you are looking for something very different this might just be what you need.

The word of the day is ODD.
I mean that in a good way.

I enjoyed this collection of short stories thoroughly. At the foundation we have a good collection of stories hitting many different genres. There is a little bit for all readers. The stories are smooth. They all seem to have great pacing.

There is a lot of oddity within these pages. Some will appreciate that. Others may be turned off. Go into it with an open mind and allow yourself to have a little fun.

The author uses a clever concept by having a narrator speak between the stories. The concept is unique because you are to believe these random crows are bringing pages of these stories to the narrator in exchange for some good old fashioned grub eating, PIZZA!
Told you it is odd.

The writer even goes as far as creating somewhat of a Science experiment, testing out different kinds of pizza and comparing the stories he receives as gifts. Mind boggling, but entertaining. Enjoyable.

Don't confuse the oddness with weirdness. There is a difference, and you may pick up on that as you make your way story to story.

Also, get ready for a few "What the hell did I just read?" moments. Those are always fun in my book, all pun intended.

Overall, a clever unique structure with the Crows bringing the stories in exchange for pizza. Don't allow the concept overshadow the well written, smoothly paced entertaining stories. This should keep you entertained, or make you hungry.

Received a free copy in exchange for an honest review ~

This was a really solid short story collection with an interesting device weaving them together. I thought the author's writing itself was really polished and well done, and enjoyed almost all of the stories. Some were more wacky than others but all had unique, fun premises.

My favourite was Nine-Tenths an Ape which takes the idea of The Monkey's Paw, but flips it by giving the person making the wish the opposite of what they want. The logic and madness of the outcomes was really clever.

My least favourite was Young Adult Series Simulator, I just didn't really engage with it as much as the other stories or find it as interesting. That was the only story I felt this way for though, all of the others were great.

Would definitely recommend this to anyone that enjoys weird fantasy stories. There are a few sensitive topics mentioned including rape but it is only talked about, there is no graphic scenes and everything is handled well in my opinion.

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me a copy of this magnificent book with a request for an open and honest review.

My only regret? I didn’t get around to reading it sooner!

All the stories are told in exchange for pizza... most definitely my kind of storytelling!!!

It is a clever and very well written collection of stories that dips its toe into many different topics... Pregnant horses and strip joints among many others.

Strange, Odd, Otherworldly with a dark sense of comedy and a dash of horror here and there.

In general there’s just a glorious amount of fun to be had inside the covers of this one.

A collection of short stories that can be dipped into and would absolutely stand up to multiple rereads.

Anybody who is old enough to remember television shows from the 60’s will find that this book strongly reminds them of shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. It has the story-telling power to surprise and confound with bizarre things like a narrator who is a bear, a room that feeds on elite scholars and professionals, and a bird that delivers pages from a story in return for food, specifically pizza slices.
The author of this book is clever, witty, and able to deliver stories of a surreal nature that execute twists and surprises at every turn of the page. He will develop into a truly interesting Stephen King or Ray Bradbury sort of story-telling.

An anthology-style collection of urban fantasy short stories held together by an interstitial narrative about a crow that brings stories (that we read) in exchange for pizzas. I love the metafictional feel that the pizza narrative frame gives, although I would've liked to have a little more development with the interstitial pizza story. The tone of the individual stories appears to go towards the direction of black comedy injected with some cosmic horror / irony - which I like.

Thanks to the author for giving me a free copy of the book!

Pages from the Pizza Crows is as abstract and weird as it is wonderful. Fiction’s synopsis suggests any reader is in for a bizarre read as each tale told is determined by the pizza type and toppings fed to the crow who visits the narrator each night.

Fiction’s premise is excellent and immersive. From the very beginning you buy into the belief this short story collection was furnished by a crow with a taste for pizza. As the narrator experiments with crusts, toppings and pizza joints, the stories fluctuate between narrative voice and style, theme and how abstract they are. The eclectism of this collection is to be applauded and admired. Fiction showcases an excellent talent for storytelling and harnesses multiple genres in the process. Some stories are bizarre, others are hilarious and many are sinister and reflective of the human condition.

Due to the narrator’s pizza experimentation, the stories also improve as the collection progresses, as the narrator learns the crow’s mechanics and tastes. The way Fiction frames their own progression as a writer is clever. It also meant the pace at which I devoured (pardon the pun) this book increased as the storytelling was elevated in fluidity and style. The last few, “Lethe”, “The Bright Idea Room” and “Satan’s Spies” were particular favourites of mine. Earlier stories showcased how narration is refined and re-defined, such as “Bedfellows” versus “Belligamy” and “The Red Constellation”; the latter two offering a sinister exploration of society, its dangers and human nature’s response.

Fiction’s approach is fascinating and unique but undoubtedly the collection may be for an acquired taste; abstract stories are not for everyone but I promise most in the collection are visceral and thought-provoking tales.

Pages from the Pizza Crows is certainly worth a read - I encourage you to take the plunge into the weird and the wonderful.

Pages from the Pizza Crows by Evan B Witmer is Book 1 of 2 in the Odd Fiction series and boy Odd Fiction it most definitely is. A collection of surreal and mind boggling short stories.

The narrator of the book, who ties each story together with a short narrative, has been given these stories by a Crow in exchange for Pizza slices. The toppings, crust, temperature and shape of the pizza slices all determine the content of the stories and all of them are of an extremely surreal nature; from a couple drawn together by fate, the stars giving warnings and the appearance of a fantasy animal.

When I first started reading this book I ummed and ahhed about whether it was really for me. The first story intrigued me whereas the second one had me frowning with confusion. However, by the end of the second short I was completely hooked. Each story is progressively more surreal and baffling but I couldn’t not read them, exclaiming ‘What?’ at the end of each and everyone of them.

If you are a lover of all things weird and strange then this is a book for you. Each story stands alone but to gain the full picture of the compilation you should read it from beginning to end as the narrators' small accounts pull the book together.

Do you ever catch someone daydreaming, ask them what they're thinking about, and they reply with the most enchanting story? A story that comes from that dreamy middle, not completely grounded in everyday life, but not too otherworldly either. That's this book.

This author found a way to collect stories from this hazy daydream space and penned 10 of them down for my enjoyment. Then found a way to tie it all together with the idea that crows are delivering those stories to me in exchange for pizza. While reading, I felt like I was being delivered the daydreams that daydreams dream.

Though it's hard to pick, I think my favorite story in this collection is Belligamy. It's a battle royale about secrets, lies, kids, wife swapping, and grass is always greener-ing. The way the story unfolded kept me engaged, there were several points of surprise and that surprise really propelled me towards the end.

I recommend this book when you're in a fanciful mood. You don't want a book to take you to Mars, but you want a little bit of the strangeness of Mars to come to you. Pages from the Pizza Crows is absolutely perfect for that.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, I'm listing the names of all the stories within this weird anthology, so other reviewers won't have to hunt for them the way I did:

Bedfellows
Belligamy
Captured by Animals
The Red Constellation
Young Adult Series Simulator
F1
Nine-Tenths an Ape
Lethe
The Bright Idea Room
Satan's Spies

Secondly, I am going to rant about how neither the cover nor the book blurb on GR gives potential readers ANY clue about the awesomeness of this book!

Next, let's look at the premise: a guy feeds a crow that brings him stories. He turns this into a sort of experiment in which he varies the components of the pizza to see how that'd affect the story. Isn't that enough to make you start reading?

If it isn't, that's okay. Just read the first story and you'll be hooked. I sure was! They get weirder and weirder towards the end, which was where I found my favorites. Weird fiction rules, what can I say?

My absolute favorite stories out of this bunch were F1, The Bright Idea Room, and Satan's Spies. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the others. I was taken by the seeming randomness of events in Bedfellows and Young Adult Series Simulator. Belligamy, The Red Constellation, and Lethe won me over by being scary af. The remaining two, Captured by Animals & Nine-Tenths an Ape were just too funny and original not to like.

In the end, this book needs a better cover and an even better blurb that shows off how wonderful it is.

I was fortunate enough to be sent a link to this book and able to give it a listen thanks to the author and I'm glad I got to give the book a chance.

From beginning to end this author introduces short stories that are surreal, but altogether cynically realistic as we delve into the worlds of incredibly human characters, no matter what the situation - especially situations with half horse/half unicorns, a particular story highlight of this book for me where we see those well formed, cynical characters this book provides.

I really appreciate the unique tales and bizarre situations these characters are led into, leading to tales I've never even thought of, this author's imagination ran wild in this collection and it sure is one crazy ride from story to story within this book, with people fighting over their spouses and trying to keep away from their also cursed ex's, this book is funny and dark in some of the most incredible ways.

A very odd but interesting collection, it is everything it sets out to be and more.

Title - Pages from the Pizza Crow x Evan Witmer
TW - gore, violence, r*pe, sewer slide
Genre - Fantasy, Horror, Metaphysical
Overview - This story is told in the first person perspective from our main character. He didn’t intend to start feeding the crow at the window, but the crow took it upon itself to get said food. Once the crow ate and left, it returned with a gift as most crows do. So he began to test a theory to see if what he gives the crow will effect what gift is received (in true hopes of making from coin off it). After the crow gets pizza one day, it starts bring pages of short stories. The novel then turns into a mixture of our main character experimenting with different pizza varieties to get different stories. From there we are told 10 short stories on so many different topics and different writing styles. It’s definitely a good book if you’re looking to break out of the norm!

This was one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read BUT it was definitely a good weird. I just had to keep reading and I’m so glad I did. Once I picked it up it was hard to put down. I need more books like this one.
This is a collection of short stories that a crow delivered based on the pizza toppings. Each story completely took me to a different world and had me 100% engaged and I could never guess how it was going to end. I think my top three favorites are “bedfellows”, “belligamy” (which had me confused at first, not gonna lie) and “The bright idea room”. Though they are all tied as my favorite short story, “Belligamy” had me thinking about it for days! I still randomly think about it and that’s how you know it was very well written.
I’m very much looking forward to read more from this author

The different stories all contained into the main one was an interesting take, and the short stories, as well as the main one, were all pretty interesting.

They had a surreal vibe, a bit of a fantasy genre. While the layout could be a bit improved (having the same margins on both sides c;), the writing in itself was fairly enjoyable. The beginning might have been a bit too fast-paced, but it's quickly corrected and doesn't disturb the reader much.

I quickly got into it and couldn't stop reading — once I started, it didn't take long for me to finish, because I was truly intrigued and needed to know more. While I'll obviously not spoil, I can say the development of the main story and the end got me satisfied.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, really. It was fun and interesting.

Pages from the Pizza Crows was delightfully odd and delightfully well-written. Introduced as a framed narrative structure, our narrator experiments with how different slices of pizza result in different pages of short stories gifted by their yard crows. This is the framing device around the short stories that make up this novel. And that was all I needed to be hooked.

I was not prepared to love Pizza Crows as much as I did, tearing through the book as soon as I picked it up. Witmer is a skilled writer, and it shows in the creative premises and execution of each story. No two are similar, and many times I found myself excitedly telling a friend about the one I’d just read.

I got this book for free from a give-a-way on tik Tok (as well as the other two I have yet to read) and over the past few days I've been reading through it, and it's honestly very fun! Good premises and ideas, I liked the set up around the short stories and a lot of the stories themselves! I think there's a few odd quirks in his writing style that isn't particularly my kind of thing (he used the word fornication a few times early on, a lot of his characters come off as Smarter Than You) but overall an enjoyable experience !

Thank you to the author for the free pdf of this book!

The name of the game for these short stories is ‘WEIRD’— in every sense of the word. These stories give you just enough whimsy surrealism to leave you constantly wondering what’s coming next.

My favorites had to be Captured by Animals, Bedfellows (for the ending), and F1. Surprisingly I also enjoyed the in-betweens of the stories. The observations of the mystical Pizza Crow.

Overall, this was a fun collection of strange stories strung together by a feathered fellow. I cant wait to read other collections by this author

Good book

This is my first Goodreads review ever so I hope I'm doing it right.
I got this as a thing where if I liked and followed the authors TikTok then I would get a free copy in exchange for an honest Goodreads review.

I really like surrealist books and this is a prime example of one. I especially liked boligamy and captured by animals but all the stories are pretty good. The ideas were really out there in a good way and I was captivated all the way through it.

Weird and Amazing!

How do I even begin to describe this book? Let me start by saying that if silly things like "responsibilities" and "life" hadn't kept interrupting me I could have easily devoured this in one sitting; like a slice of pizza. Each story was incredibly unique and kept me hungry for more. Surreal and satiating!

Pages from the Pizza Crows is a collection with a framing device so good and weird that I'd be hard pressed to say whether the frame or the stories inside were my favorite. There are several that I’ll be thinking about for a long time.

I want more stories like this, ones which are unafraid to have endings that aren’t always great for the protagonists but also aren’t trying to be cruel. Not to say that they never turn out well, but they don’t turn out in a way anyone would ask for beforehand. They don’t rely on twists, precisely, but most of them have a line or two in the last page which reframes or expands the narrative without taking away anything from the story. An excellent read, one that I think will stay with me.
