Meet the Author: S.C. Shannon has worked in law enforcement for over a decade. She grew up in southern California with her close-knit family. She obtained a bachelor’s in criminal justice and then a master’s in forensic psychology. S.C. Shannon currently resides in California where she continues to serve her community and write.
Synopsis: The end was just the beginning. At age twenty Grace quickly learns what it takes to stay alive when the world suddenly comes to an end. Her focus it to protect the ones she loves, keeping everyone who has survived alive, especially her family. Will Grace fulfill her mission and survive the apocalyptic shutdown and threats that emerge from within the darkness?
Reader’s Thoughts: This is not normally my go-to type of book. But WOW! The description on this one drew me in, and I couldn’t be gladder that I took a chance on this one. The monsters and scenery gave me The Walking Dead Vibes and our strong, courage MC, Grace, left me with The Hunger Game vibes. This story bounces back and forth from past to preset which at times was confusing to me and I found myself flipping back occasionally to see where I was, past or present. This would not deter me in any way from recommending the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the short chapters, they always left you at a stopping point where it was easy to come back to the book, picking up right where you left off without hesitation.
What Lurks in the Shadows by S.C. Shannon had many twists and turns throughout. Filled with suspense, murder, monsters, and romance you never expected what would come next. The action in this book kept you on your toes, going through the adventure with Grace the entire time. I can’t wait to see what S.C. Shannon has to offer next.

What Lurks in the Shadows is not my normal genre, however I really enjoyed the writing and thought the concept was great. The attention to detail is very thorough and the plot is well developed. I enjoyed the central theme of family and personal relationships to overcome evil. I think the thing that disturbs me most about topics such as dystopia/apocalyptic, monsters or psychological thrillers, is they are actually not too far off from our current reality.
I would love to see a crime novel by this author next, her knowledge, background and writing style would be so well suited to the genre, and given that its my favorite to read, I would be the biggest fan!
After a series of mysterious blackouts and talk about the end of the world, Grace and her family must adapt to their new lifestyle. Along the way, she relives the story about her life before the blackouts while also weaving in stories how she learns to fight and handle any challenge thrown at her from her obnoxious (but loving) older brother to what it is that lurks in the shadows. This is a suspenseful novel told in two timelines, with a friends to lovers plot, and a strong heroine.
Review: I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy from the author. You could tell that S.C. Shannon wrote this as her love letter to her profession, her family, and her characters. I loved how strong willed Grace was and how much she cared for her family. Nick was such a sweet and considerate love interest, which I think is important to portray in a YA novel. I was able to learn about survival skills alongside the main characters and rooted for them the whole way. If you're a fan of the movies Bird Box or A Quiet Place, you'll love this story.

"I know, failing to prepare is preparing to faill. But I dont know how thia applies to all of this."
S. C. Shannon did a fantastic job on this incredible book! This post pandemic, dual storyline book follows the Baker family (John, Susan, Stephen and Grace) on their end of the world adventure. Living in LA, 20 year old, Grace works at her local police station and frequents a cafe where she meets Nick.
The story goes between present time and before the blackouts and bombings start happening.
The Baker family packs up their belongings and heads north to their family cabin in the woods north of LA. As the outside world falls apart, the Baker family is planning and preparing They need to get supplies - food, first aid, medicine. No electricity and no running water is not stopping them from learning new lessons from John Baker. John had always given Grace riddles to figure out. Some were easier than others and he was always there to help her if she got stuck, but she was to figure everything out on her own. Once at the cabin, John and Stephen had to teach Susan and Grace how to fight. They have to travel to town every so often to get more supplies and need to go out to hunt for more food. They learn pretty quickly that you should not be out after dark. You will encounter the most terrifying thing that cannot be seen!
I loved the details about John being military and trying to prepare his family for anything. I feel like this book is very well written. It has short chapters, butba ton of details!
I enjoyed the dual timeline, but I did find a few spots to be a little bit confusing. Some of the present time is Grace remembering something, so it is kind of like the "before" timeline, but it isn't. I would have to double check the chapter title to make sure I was understanding correctly.
If you enjoy suspensful, hard to put down, dual timelines, post-apocalyptic times, learning how to fend for yourself, female heroine mixed with a smidge of sarcasm then this is a book you should check out. :)

📗 Imagine being trained your whole life for the end of the world without knowing it? That training came in handy for Grace Baker when she ended up deep in the woods, in a secluded cabin, alone, with an unknown threat lurking in the shadows.
This is such a compelling novel. The back and forth between timelines was excellent because it really made me see the contrast between the Grace before the apocalypse and the Grace after the apocalypse. How much life changed for her and everything she had to endure in the present time. Not to mention the vivid description and attention to detail that helped draw me in and completely immerse me into this apocalyptic world of monsters. The romance between Grace and Nick was my favorite part. I found myself rooting for their relationship to flourish even throughout all the trauma they had to undergo. All leading to an emotionally grand conclusion, full of action. Gosh, I could not have thought about a better ending myself. It kept me guessing till the very last chapter. On ocassions, throughout the story, my heart broke for Grace but at the same time she's such a badass that heroes like her are meant to have tragic backstories. I'm a fan of Grace Baker, and if I ever find myself in the middle of an apocalypse I sure want to have someone like her on my team.
📗 To all my apocalyptic, horror/thriller loving bookworms out there, this is an absolute must read! I have zero doubt you will enjoy and love it as much as I did.
I just finished what Lurks in the shadows by S.C Shannon for @katieandbreypa and @s.c.shannon.author book tour and here is what I thought!
Grace was just 20 years old when the whole world came down around her. Literally. Her perfect life in ruins as her parents and her brother escape the carnage by going to their secluded cabin. Just as they adjust to life in the post-apocalyptic world, they learn something terrifying… Something she wasn't prepared for. When the world collapsed, something not human had made their escape into this new world.
I heart me some post-apocalyptic books and this one lived up to my expectations. The whole dynamic of the world not just being fraught with peril, now there is something else out there, making the world not safe after dark. Loved it. I loved I got just enough info to keep me interested but not too much that it was over explained.
I did love the romance part in there too and usually I wouldn't be down for romance in this genre but it actually worked. Enjoyed the plot, the writing was fluid and the location was brilliant.
What didn't I love… it got a little repetitive. Not so much it mattered but enough to make me feel it was being padded a touch. It didn't need to be padded. It was really well done.
I like the character development although I felt her dad was a coward. He took the easy way out in my opinion.

"What Lurks in the Shadows" penned by the author S.C. Shannon is the debut novel of the author. Story features a Twenty years old girl named Grace. She lives with her parents and older brother in Los Angeles. Power outages have become common these days. People started looting and rioting in the streets. Grace's family left Los Angeles so they can be safe. After a few hours drive, they reached a small town just outside of Lake Tahoe.
There was an old family cabin, hidden deep in the woods. Grace and her family learnt some survival techniques. They became new people and had lost many closed ones. Their life was normal for 226 days but on day 227, the monsters came. Grace was left alone to survive. She lost her family and started having nightmares. Her notebook is her companion to share her feelings. Will Grace ever be able to live a normal life again? Will she be able to defeat the monsters?
Cover photo of the book is well designed. The title of the book couldn't have been better. The story is well paced. It hooked my attention from the first page itself. The author has created an interesting world in the story. It would be amazing to see a movie based on this story. Those who love to read stories involving mystery, horror, suspense, etc should pick this book.
This book is truly an adventure. It's an adventure where the protagonists get to discover themselves, where the world has come to a sudden stop, and all the dangerous things that lurk in the shadows are coming for you.
It is not exactly horror but has elements of it in the story, along with some incredible twist and turns, that will surely hook you till the end.
Few things that I genuinely enjoyed about this book were, the writing, characters and pacing of the story. Writing in this book is commendable. It simple and easy to follow, and the manner in which this book has been written will surely induce the reader to read further. Characters are well developed and relatable. I was soo scared for the protagonist, Grace. The things she has gone through, and is still able to stand strong, is praiseworthy. Pacing of the story is just right. It is not too fast or slow.
Few things that didn't work for me were there was alot of repetition across chapters. For instance, about the events of the day that occured. Along with this, there were times when I felt this book became way too preachy and felt that just made it a little harder for me to read.
If you're into some dystopian, walking dead, romance, suspense, horror, thriller action, you MUST read this one. I won a giveaway from this author and was jazzed because this book has all the elements I love. It did not disappoint.
👹 What I liked: The MC, Grace, is very well written. She's quirky and BA all at the same time, she reminded me a bit of Katniss. I loved the short chapters and dual plotlines that created such a well-crafted world. What I really liked was how realistic this book was for me, especially relating to the blackouts/end of life as we know it. It's clear the author (who has worked in law enforcement for years) knows her stuff.
👹 What didn't work for me: Not ruining anything here, but this one was a bit scarier than my normal reads. For me, murder is life. Creepy monsters in the dark... no ma'am. Ha! That's on me though. If you like monsters and paranormal-esq stuff, and you're braver than me, you'll be just fine.
Read this one if you like: 👹 Dystopian thrillers with a bit of horror thrown in 👹 The Walking Dead and/or The Stand 👹 One Second After
Overall, great read. I'm super excited for her next book to come out. Thanks for the gifted copy.
Thriller, Horror, Sci-Fi, Apocalypse, Multiple Time Lines, Friends to lovers, Female Protagonist
💀Quick Synopsis: Grace finds herself learning how to survive with her family after chaos has taken over the country/world at their family chain in the woods. After living peacefully with with her family in their cabin, things take a dark turn. Grace quickly learns people aren’t the only monsters they have to worry about fighting to survive.
💀Liked: Horror isn’t my normal read as I get picky about my spooky reads, however, this book was great. The right amount of horror and hope. The multiple time lines helped give an insight to how Grace became the women she was. The authors creativity with the horror and monsters was refreshing. The slow burn romance that develops was surprising, however, it felt right for this story. I read this in one sitting as I could not wait to figure out what happened next.
💀Disliked: Not sure if it’s because it’s an ARC book or based on genre but there were no trigger warnings. Potential trigger warnings listed below: *Murder *Attempted Assault
Read this book if you believe in monsters, have prepared for the worst at all costs, and are stubborn to a fault.
Grace thought her life was going well. She had a stable job at the police department, loves her Stephen King novels, and has her perfect coffee spot. What she doesn't expect is a call from her parents begging her to come home which she believes is overdramatic. Her parents are in fear that the blackouts around the city have more to do with the country as a whole versus California. Begrudgingly she makes it to her parents only to find them packing the car with her brother and telling her they have to leave immediately. Then LA is bombed, then the whole world changes. Forced to go into survival mode, Grace learns things about herself she would never expect....and then the monsters come.
This book is riveting, it's definitely like jumping into a Stephen King dystopia but you get more of the insight from the main character. I loved watching Grace grow and learn how to improve her life. This girl never gave up and you fight for her through every chapter of the book. I absolutely loved it!
Thank you so much to S.C. Shannon for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Grab your copy today!
Ho-ly crap! Loved, loved, loved this. I don't read many post-apocalyptic books... in fact, I can't remember the last one I read (that wasn't a dystopian). I am SO glad I read this one.
One day, as everyone is going about their lives, bombs are dropped across the nation and the world is plunged into chaos. Our MC Grace and her family are lucky enough to get out just in time, and escape to a family cabin. However, there are monsters lurking in the dark, and we quickly learn that most have not survived. Grace is an incredible character and so well written. I can feel her emotions coming off of the page. I love her family too, and the other MC who is later introduced.
I felt so connected to the story and did not want to put it down! The writing is done beautifully and the story is action-packed and paced well. There is plenty of suspense and a dash of romance to add some positivity. The ending was incredibly satisfying and left an air of mystery while still tying up loose ends. I highly, highly, recommend this read!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
Grace’s comfortable world is shattered when the world blacks out and she’s thrown into an unknown apocalypse. At first she has her family, but then one by one each one is taken and she’s left alone. The story is told in past and present timelines, giving you piece by piece how the apocalypse happened, and how she is managing in the present. Not only has the world gone crazy, but she also faces an unknown predator. This book will have you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath, fearful for what is going to happen next as Grace battles survival. The author’s ability to create that fear in the reader is outstanding, and I love that the predators were invisible. Sometimes a description of a monster can be such a turn off. This is an amazing read and if you like to scared, and you like apocalypse stories, this is a must read. It is very rare I read a book that captures that fear factor so well that I literally have to SLOW down my reading so I don’t jump ahead to make sure everything is going to be alright or not!
Boy, oh boy, would I not survive the end of the world. I can tell you that RIGHT NOW. I'd just lay down and die right in the middle of the street. 🤣 Rolling blackouts in Texas? No internet? I have to fight monsters? I'm out. ✌️
I'll tell you I was getting 🎆 stressed 🎆 thinking about if this were me. 🤣 The author made this seem like this could really be happening in our current world. I even messaged her and was like, "ma'am, this could be Texas" 🤣 And then MONSTERS IN THE DARK? No ma'am. ✋️
This book flashes back from past to present. The chapters were short and easy to digest! (My fav kind of book!) OH and a fierce, strong female for the main character? Yes.
She also has a short story - Nightfall - that you need to pick up and get a tiny taste of this book! Thank you to the author for my copy!!
Wow wow wow! This was such a great book!! Post-apocalyptic/dystopian novels are usually not my jam, but the description of this book had me really interested and I am soooo thankful I took a chance on a genre I usually don’t like because I loved reading this!
What Lurks in the Shadows gave me very A Quiet Place, Bird Box, The Walking Dead (but not zombies), and even almost Stranger Things vibes! I was captivated the entire time! This book is written from two different points in time until those points converge in one epic moment! Honestly it was such a clever way to write the book and I loved watching it come full circle. The characters are completely lovable and the writing is fantastic!
While I am still weary of the genre overall and don’t think I will ever become a dystopian fan, If S.C. Shannon writes another book like this, I know I will be picking it up!
What Lurks in the Shadows is a compelling read about survival in extreme circumstances. I couldn’t put this book down and I love the way it jumped between what was happening in the present to what had happened in the past. Sometimes when novels are written like this I get annoyed with the jumping back and forth but it really worked with this novel and really helped us understand why Grace was all alone in the present. It helped to create a lot of tension and I definitely felt Grace’s isolation. There were times when I was worried about Grace and I was totally invested in the story. I would definitely recommend this novel if you are a fan of gripping thrillers.
I received a free Advanced reading copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and is written voluntarily.
This is a great apocalyptic story! The world building, the switch back and forth from the past to the present, the world building around the new apocalyptic world with the monsters, the action all of it was superb! Grace was a badass heroine ready for the end of the world but at the same time wasnt all that ready and that really resonated with me. She had this air about her that was parts relatable but also parts that seemed other worldly. And Nick was a great counter part being there to remind her of all the things she's been numb to and to comfort her when she needed it. All in all it was a great read!
What Lurks in the Shadows is a post-apocalyptic, dual timeline story complete with people annihilating monsters. Great for spooky season for those celebrating 🙂
I won’t lie…the beginning of this book stressed me out. I have to be in the right mood for an end-of-society story. But once I got over my apocalypse paranoia, I was HOOKED. This story was great!
I did think the dialogue could have been a little bit more interesting, but this could have been intentional to illustrate the social isolation these characters have gone through.
I received a free copy of this book and am leaving this honest review on my own accord.
This gave me feels of Diary of Anne Frank meets Predator.
A first person post-apocalyptic narrative written in two timelines, before and present. The chapters are short and build suspense, then just when you are eager to see something happen, it switches time and you are impatient to get back to the other timeline. It’s action packed and emotional, with puzzles to keep you intrigued. I love the world building and Grace, the main character. You go through the roller coaster of emotions with her and are present as she brainstorms each problem as it arises. It’s perfect for this time of year. A must read and available now.
All I will say is beware the Click-click-click-click! Nothing good comes from this sound. There was a scene early on in the story during Grace's flashback to the past that was scary in the sense that it was a good build up to what was coming. At that point I did not know what type of monster lurked in the darkness, but I did know it was one to be feared.
While I did like this book, I did feel that it took a while for the anticipation to really build up. Additionally, I found myself easily getting confused in the beginning as well with the transition between the past and the present. Although, once the story really picked up, I was hooked and found the book to be a quick read.
What Lurks in the Shadows, by S.C. Shannon, is a terrifying realistic story of a post apocalyptic world. Our heroine, Grace Baker, is girl in her twenties, still trying to find herself, when her country is bombarded. Despite everything, for awhile, Grace is one of the lucky ones, she and her family got away just in time. However, their luck is running out and something horrific is hunting humans. Will they survive the end of the world? The narrator did a wonderful job in this audio version. Some parts were really scary! I found the story a bit repetitive in the middle, but the final chapters had a very good pace. Definitely worth the time ;)
This was such a creative horror story and i feel like it was timed really well, i feel like this could absolutely happen. It was extremely well written and realistic. The main character, Grace, is an excellent balance of badass and modest normal person that you cant help but root for her. She goes through A LOT and you ride the wave of emotions right along with her. I thought the book was paced very well and i liked how it kept going back and forth between past and present revealing things at just the right time. I also appreciated that it wasn't super scary and i was still able to sleep at night.
I don’t know about you, but I tend to save certain genres for different times of the year. This one is perfect for Spooky Season. The level of suspense and conflict is palpable, and this page-turner kept me up well into the night. Grace is a likable character who is easy to root for. I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. Great debut. Excited to see what’s next from this author.
I received an ARC as part of a virtual book tour. These opinions are my own and are being expressed without bias.
This book gave me very much Predator vibes along with the dystopian world. I really enjoyed this book. It was intense and kept me finding out what happened next. I love are FMC Grace who is strong and powerful in her own way solving the problems as they come. The one thing which I wasn’t the biggest fan over (but got over) was the continuing jump between timelines. At first I found it helpful but after a couple of chapters I just wanted to stay in the present. But besides that I loved the story I loved Nick I loved the thrill and the suspense of this story and the end I was not expecting.
Just finished this book, loved the adventure/sci fi element. Loved Grace and Nick's characters and relationship.
Not sure I'd want to meet the creatures at any point! I'm not as brave as Grace! Loved the riddles between Grace, her brother Stephen and their dad. I was never any good at riddles!
Sounds like Nick and Grace found each other at just the right time, they also saved each other in a way. Grace went through a lot in a short space of time and being alone didn't help her move on, her whole life and memories were in that spot.
This was an excellent YA read with a raw, real, strong female protagonist. Even though Grace was unknowingly prepared for the worst, you really feel and understand how much she suffers. Yet you really feel her strength as she preservers through it all. With some great twists and turns, this book was a ride I didn’t want to get off. So while it could be a stand alone, I’ll be over here waiting for a sequel.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story from S. C. Shannon. The storyline is not one that I would normally read but I was hooked from the beginning. I really liked how the story intertwined the past and the present in a way that was easy to understand and keep up with and showing how those two times came together in the end. Grace is a strong, female lead who you sympathize with but also root for throughout the story. I loved this book!
