Kasper Ridge #1

Only a Fling: Kasper Ridge, Book 1

Rate this book
From USA Today bestselling author Delancey Stewart comes this enemies-to-lovers, workplace romance full of small-town charm, laugh out loud moments, and plenty of steam!

My new boss is a former fighter pilot-and it should be illegal to be that hot. But this city-boy condo builder doesn't know the first thing about construction in a place like Kasper Ridge.

Will hired me to oversee the renovation at the old Kasper Ridge Resort-a job that will make my company and guarantee that Papa can live comfortably to a very old age. I just need to keep my eyes on the prize.

And the prize is not Will Cruz's ocean blue eyes or those rock-hard abs. Besides, all those muscles and that killer smile are temporary. I've lived in the mountains long enough to know that slick city boys don't stick around for the long run.

So I tell myself the things I need to hear to stay strong, hold firm, maintain my distance. Until Will kisses me one night and I forget pretty much everything I'd been telling myself about protecting my heart.

I know it's only a fling, but what if there's a chance Will Cruz is the one? What if I give him my heart, and he doesn't stay?

Contains mature themes.

I'm USA Today Bestselling author Delancey Stewart. My contemporary romances run the gamut of settings and setups, but they always deliver humor, heart and heat. It's a guarantee.

I write from my home in Denver, CO, where I manage a household full of boys and men. Okay, only one man. The hubs. But two boys. I mean, three if you count the hubs. (You see why I do words and not numbers. I was told there'd be no math in this bio. Someone lied.)

I grew up in California and have had more jobs than anyone on earth (personal trainer, pharmaceutical rep, copywriter, tech writer, marketing director, wine seller, elementary school teacher... I'm not kidding. The list. It goes on.) But the one I love the most is writing, in part because I get to meet people who love books and stories as much as I do! DNF at 24%

I have yet to really believe there is even an attraction between Will and Lucy, even if it is one buried under being rivals. And, I really don't like Lucy. I understand feeling like you have to fight for yourself as you are a woman...but if you put that attitude into absolutely everything, it's exhausting for the reader and she felt like a woman who has decided she is going to be as difficult and annoying as possible to absolutely everyone. At least that is how it felt to me. I just couldn't relate to Lucy.

I am unable to recommend this title.

3.5/5⭐️ 4/5🌶

Lucy isn’t taken seriously as a woman in a male dominated field. Her construction company needs work, even if she has to listen to a city boy who has no idea what he’s doing. Will is sick of people not not believing in him. He decides it’s time to branch out on his own so he decides to take on renovations for a buddy’s resort.

Cute rom com. Absolutely adored Lucy’s Papa. Reminded me a bit of Maggie Moves On. Miscommunication bothered me a lot. Lucy labeled their relationship before it even began and Will just accepted it. Ends HEA but also a cliffhanger as you don’t find out the full story of the treasure hunt.

This is a beautiful story about love but it is also about the stories we tell ourselves that in turn shape our choices and our lives. This is a rivals, temporary fling, workplace romance with a side of slow burn. Lucy owns a construction company and is excited to work on the renovation of Kasper Ridge Resort which is in her home town. She often feels undervalued being a woman in a male dominated field. Will is a construction manager but feels he’s getting nowhere in his father’s company. So he jumps at the invitation from his military buddy to come to Kasper Ridge to manage the renovation project. Will and Lucy have instant chemistry but they also have individual issues related to competency and perception that cause clashing, communication issues, and some angst. Their relationship grows organically as the construction progresses and the mystery of Uncle Marvin’s treasure continues to unravel. For me the story started out a bit slow but once it caught my attention it was impossible to put it down. The book has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, steamy scenes, strong friendships, supportive family, laughs, painful pasts, a bit of mystery, and all the heart squeezing love. Experiencing the journey of Lucy and Will as they fall in love and work through their individual issues gave me all the feels - you will laugh, cry, swoon, grind your teeth, cheer, and happy sigh. I am excited to read the next story and to get more clues in the treasure hunt. This book was 4.5 stars for me. I willingly reviewed an early copy of this book.

Will Cruz comes to a mountain ski town to oversee the renovation of the old Kasper Ridge Resort. He old Navy buddy Ghost and inherited it and will give him a share for be in charge of the project. Lucy Dale is the best contractor in town. She runs the company her grandfather started and this job could keep her crew employed for almost a year. She’s very competent at her job. And it puts Will and Lucy together often. This is a steamy, open door romance and everything moves at an insta-attraction pace. I did not like that technically he is her employer. His first encounter with her borders on sexual harassment. But this is a lighter and more predictable story. There is a side story that involves a treasure hunt for Ghost and his sister that is not resolved in this book. I’m not a fan of a big things left unresolved but I guess it will be something carried through the series. (This is the first book.) Thank you to NetGalley and Delancey Stewart Books for an eARC in exchange for a review. (3.5 stars)

A book by Delancey can be summed up like this: heart-filling, low angst, & guaranteed HEA. This new series continues the tradition and reminds me why she is a favorite! Kasper Ridge follows the renovation of a dilapidated mountain resort and the treasure hunt left for the new owners, who inherited it from their eccentric uncle.

In this book, city boy Will meets lifetime mountain gal Lucy. She's a juxtaposition; construction company owner who works as hard as her crew and lover of dresses with heels. (As a woman in a man's field, I absolutely love that Delancey lets her be both!). He's an old Navy buddy of the nephew who inherited and is brought in to head up the construction project. She's the foreman (forewoman? foreperson?) hired for the project. As the project begins and timelines shift, can they balance their work dynamic with the attraction growing between them?

So Much Fun!
I want to live at Kasper Ridge Resort with the flyboys. Just sayin’.
Will Cruz arrives in Kasper Ridge, CO from LA to help his old Naval squadron buddy renovate a resort he had inherited. He falls immediately for Lucy Dale, the local construction foreman that is as prickly as she is beautiful. Lucy is a harder sell because men like Will don’t stay in small-town Kasper Ridge.
I loved watching this couple fall in love with each other and fall in love with the resort. Also, at play in this book is the ongoing mystery of a hidden treasure, with clues doled out in a very stingy fashion. I need to know what the treasure is! Lucy and Will are both dealing with familial concerns that make their HEA seem improbable, and so very satisfying. I loved this book!

Only a Fling is the first book in the Kasper Ridge series by Delancey Stewart. There is a prequel to this series, Only a Summer, but it is not necessary to have read it before this book since it features different characters- but does give a little more to part of the mystery that is at play throughout this story.

Will Cruz, AKA Fake Tom, and Lucy Dale, AKA Firecracker, have a cute and not overly angsty workplace romance. Will came to Kasper Ridge filled with determination and high hopes at overseeing the renovations of the old ski resort that his former military friend, Archie, had inherited from his great uncle. Lucy had taken over her grandfather's construction company and was vying for the bid on the resort that would take her company to an all new level.

I enjoyed the instant chemistry between these two- even if they butted heads at first as they were both trying to prove themselves. The attraction was there though it was a long road for them to act on it. Lucy kept herself guarded, knowing that no one comes to the small mountain town to stay forever- the most she could hope for was a fling. Will was sweet and a little cocky but ultimately their personalities were pretty well matched.

There was a lot of sub-plot happening but necessary to set up the intrigue and mystery that seems like will slowly unravel throughout the series. Overall, Will and Lucy were fun, sexy and sweet... I'm curious to see how the rest of the series will go and if the mystery will span the series.

Thank you to Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the advanced review copy of the book. My review is being left voluntarily and contains my own thoughts & opinions.

Will and Lucy were great together! Kasper Ridge is a small town in Colorado, where Lucy grew up and intends to stay. She doesn’t trust that anyone else will, though. Will is in town helping his military friend renovate a dilapidated resort, and determined to prove himself as a success to his family. Neither of them was looking for love. I appreciated their vulnerability with each other. They had great chemistry off the bat, and several spicy scenes, too. Great side characters, especially Lucy’s grandpa, Papa.

The series set up nicely with book one, and I look forward to book two!

This new series is starting off so well. It’s a slow burn, small town work place romance and I’m all in. Both of them seem so confident and capable and neither is even looking for a relationship but they can’t seem to resist the pull between them.

They both have issues and they recognize it in each other. There’s this feeling of being seen and appreciated and they still can’t seem to get it right. It’s the usual lack of communication and misunderstandings when you try to imagine what the other person might want. It’s so familiar and a good reminder to not interpret everything based on past experience.

I love the group, the small town, the resort and the treasure hunt. It’s easy to read, low angst and a feel good story about real caring people. I’m eager for the next story.

A cute start to a new series! Will has a strained relationship with his father and is happy when a friend ask him to come work with him. He welcomes the break from working with his father for awhile. As former military he is pleased to be seeing and working with his former teammates to rehab a ski resort one of them has inherited. When he meets the owner of the construction company there is a connection between these two. Lucy is annoyed with Will when she first meets him but she can’t deny the connection or the chemistry. Before they know it they are acting on both. This was a cute fun read. Throw in meddling family members, a treasure hunt and a fun construction crew and we are definitely set for a entertaining series! I’m excited to see what happens next!

After leaving the military, former fighter jet pilot Will "Fake Tom" Cruz went to work for his family's luxury construction business, but he's tired of waiting for his father to trust him enough to run a project on his own. When his old Navy buddy Archie "Ghost" Kasper calls and asks for help managing the renovations on the ski resort he inherited from his great uncle in Colorado, Will decides it's time to make a change. Upon arriving at the resort, his first task is to hire a construction crew to do the work, and he settles on a local firm, Kasper Ridge Construction, run by Lucy Dale. It's a big opportunity for Lucy's company; the only problem is that she'll have to work with out-of-towner Will, who drives her crazy from the moment they meet.

I really enjoyed Will and Lucy's slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance. At first, each was concerned that giving into their feelings would jeopardize the renovation project, which was important to both of them for different reasons. In addition, they were dealing with family and emotional baggage that presented a number of challenges to their burgeoning relationship, particularly for Lucy, who was afraid of getting hurt by Will leaving town at the end of the project. I understood her concerns, however, and found it easy to root for her to overcome them.

The subplot involving the treasure map and mysterious inheritance left by Archie's Uncle Marvin was both fun and intriguing, and I can't wait for more clues to be revealed in the next book. I was also intrigued by Archie himself; it seemed as if there may have been a tragic end to his Navy career, and I really wanted to know more about what happened. Finally, Lucy's grandfather and her friends CeeCee and Bennie were so funny! I particularly enjoyed the "sniff test" CeeCee used for prospective dates and her obsession with Will's hair products.

I highly recommend "Only a Fling" for all contemporary romance fans and look forward to the next book in the series.

Only A Fling is the official start of Delancey Stewart’s new Kasper Ridge series. It’s a great contemporary romance in a beautiful setting with well-developed, realistic characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lucy Dale runs her own construction company in scenic Kasper Ridge, Colorado. When the heirs to a rundown resort come to restore the hotel to its former glory, she knows she can run the project successfully. She doesn’t count on the owner’s former Navy pilot pals showing up to help. Particularly Will Cruz and his perfect hair.

Will wants to get out from underneath his father’s domineering thumb, and what better way that to help his friend Archie, aka Ghost, in Colorado. He is supposed to manage the project with Lucy. They both need to figure out how get the project completed on time without their underlying attraction interfering.

The hotel construction project in the scenic Colorado Rockies is a great backdrop to this forced proximity story. Throw in a mysterious treasure hunt left by the Ghost’s late uncle, and I was hooked.

Both Will and Lucy are desperate to have their work taken seriously. I really liked the progression of getting to know each other and dating a bit before acting on their hot chemistry. They have a tough time communicating with each other, though. While it was frustrating to read at times, it felt realistic and true to each character.

This is an author I’ve always meant to read more of, and I’m so glad that I picked up Only A Fling. It’s a fabulous start to a new series, and I can’t wait to read the next book. If you like a slow burn, contemporary romance with realistic characters, this is a great book to check out.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Will aka Fake Tom is a former fighter pilot, currently overseeing a construction project at a dilapidated resort one of his fighter pilot buddies inherited. Will moved into the tiny town Kasper Ridge from Los Angeles, trying to break free from his father's influence. He feels like his father never trusts him, keeps putting him down. Lucy runs a construction company in Kasper Ridge and she is instantly prejudiced against Will, thinking he's going to be a playboy and a useless city slicker who will boss her around but know nothing about the demands the local environment sets for construction projects. However, he doesn't turn out to be so bad, and there is mutual physical chemistry, but Lucy is reluctant to give in because she believes big city boys will inevitably leave and break her heart if she lets down her walls. This makes more sense when some of her history is revealed later in the book. The resort was previously owned by an eccentric old man who left around clues and keys and pieces of a treasure map, and the owners think there is something valuable to be found, no one is sure what but it may be related to some little known old movies. The romance stands alone but the backstory about the treasure hunt began in a free prequel and will continue in future releases. I enjoyed this story a great deal, I liked the characters, the dialogue and the writing style. Steam level: Emotional sex scenes.

I have to say that we really enjoyed our first read by this author. We enjoyed the characters, some more than others. Loved the slow burn romance between Lucy and Will, and we enjoyed their chemistry but, what was lacking in their relationship or so-called fling is they lacked communication between them.

We honestly felt bad for Will always wanting to seek his father's approval and never feeling he lived up to his father's expectations, never feeling that his father loved him as he should. Loved that he broke away from his bonds in order to seek something different to prove his worth, even if it was to his self.

Loved Lucy aka firecracker, who was a hoot, loved her sense of humor and smarts, and loved her relationship with her papa. We loved that she was succeeding in what some would consider a man's world.

Overall it was a cute and fun romance, and we loved the mystery that both and his sister were trying to solve that ended up somehow including the town's people adding clues to the mystery needing solving this part livened up the story, and we loved that. Looking forward to the next book in this ongoing series.

Not my cup of tea

The reader's immediate introduction to the so-called "military hero" male protagonist is that he, by his own self-admission, is a screwup, both during his time in the Navy and afterwards, while working for his father's upscale construction company.

The female protagonist works in construction as well, and is apparently the alpha of the two of them in this "fling to forever" romance. Her domineering personality is expressed mainly by her being unpleasant and combative in her interactions with the self-pitying hero.

Frankly, I didn't really like either of the romantic protagonists and, as a result, I couldn't root for them to achieve an HEA.

This is the first book in the Kasper Ridge Series in involves Lucy and Will. It's a small town, enemies to lovers (sorta) romance.

Lucy is the constructions forewoman for the company up on Kasper Ridge. Knowing how to work on the Colorado mountains is her specialty. She has been working in this male dominated business forever and is used to not being taken seriously. When Will comes up to Kasper Ridge to help his friend, Ghost, set-up a ski resort that had been left to him and be the construction manager, Lucy is worried she will be misunderstood again. These two butt heads, as coworkers do, but they have an unbelievable chemistry too. The only problem is, Lucy worries that everyone always leaves her, and Kasper Ridge. Is it worth it to fall in love, if Will's time on the mountain is limited?

These two have some delightful banter, and great chemistry. They butted heads, but also had an instant attraction to each other. Lucy was so guarded, but it was because of her past history. She knows that no one comes up the mountain and stays. She has already resigned that she will never fall in love, because no one ever stays. Will also was working hard to prove his worth, not only to his father, but himself. These two coming together, beginning to understand that they are worth being there for, made for a good love story.

I also enjoyed getting to know the side characters in this book including Papa (Lucy's grandpa) and the friends restoring the ski resort. We also had this subplot of a mystery/treasure hunt. It did not get solved in this book, but some of it was solved.

I think that this story is pretty run of the mill for a romance and likely easily forgettable. There was nothing that was super new or exciting and was just a good book while I was reading it.

New series and we get to meet some ‘wickedly handsome and gorgeous’ service buddies. Will Cruz, or Fake Tom, joins his friend and fellow service mate (Archie Kasper or Ghost) to be a project manager for Ghost’s inheritance (that he owns with his sister, Aubrey). Lucy Dale is the owner of the local construction company that Will hires to rehab Ghost’s and Aubrey’s hotel/resort.

Kasper Ridge Resort has a very big role in this book and is a character itself. Will and Lucy do a dance, working towards an HEA, fighting it every step of the way. Will is from LA and Lucy sorta holds that against him. She doesn’t think he knows what he’s doing. And Will is suffering his own angst with his family, or more specifically, his dad.

I loved Lucy’s Papa. There’s a whole set of characters interwoven in their story but Papa has the greatest wisdom and heart that he hopes will help Lucy move forward with her life.

Sometimes Lucy was a bit judgmental for me but it was part of her character and how she dealt with her own past. She comes thru in the end for herself and those around her, though, and that’s what is important. I loved Will - he was just a wee bit broken - and he, too, needed to work thru some events in his past in order to move forward with Lucy. Great start to a new series!

The right decisions are always the hardest to make...

The first story in this series has me hooked already. It's fun, flirty, sexy and kept me engrossed throughout. Will got a call from his buddy from the Military to help him with a renovation of the old Kasper Ridge Resort. Will thought this was perfect timing. Time for a change. He worked for his father's construction company but knew no matter how hard he tried, he could never get the respect he deserved from him. So he quits and makes his way to the Resort.

Lucy was thrilled when she was accepted for a construction job for the Kasper Ridge Resort. She was not so thrilled when she saw who would be her boss. Will was gorgeous, and a had a smile that she was sure melted the panties off of every woman he met. But he was from the City, and she knew firsthand that once he finished the job he would go back to where he came from. No one settled in a place like this.

It was delightful to see the push and shove and obvious attraction between these two. I am looking forward to the next story in the series. Bring it on!!

Small town/big city transplant, slow-ish burn E2L. There are a lot of things to love in Only a Fling. Will is asked to Kasper Ridge, Colorado by his Navy Buddy Ghost, to head up a renovation project at Ghost’s bequeathed resort. Will jumps at the chance to leave LA and reunite with his buddy. Eventually, the whole Navy gang is back together to help Ghost with the resort.
Will needs to chose a contractor for the renovation and he chooses Lucy’s company. I love that Lucy’s in a male dominated business. She’s is somewhat defensive at times, but I understand her feelings. Will is like an actual real guy in 2022. He’s a great looking guy, but not an alpha, even though he’s really accomplished, the man was a fighter pilot in the Navy for goodness sakes, he’s a man with insecurities stemming from his relationship with his father who was, apparently, the best of the best as far as Navy fighter pilots go. Will works in his Father’s construction business before heading out to Colorado. Will feels like he’s a failure in his father’s eyes and, even at his age, he still seeks validation and unconditional love from his father. They do love each other, but there’s a piece missing for Will and it really effects him and his confidence overall. With Lucy, he’s attracted right away but after a little sparring they give in and Lucy is just wonderful for Will. She listens to him and is supportive as is Will to Lucy in return. I love them for each other. Some really special touches are Lucy’s grandfather, Ernie, who was a good friend to Ghost’s Uncle who left Ghost and his sister Audrey the resort and is able to provide some help in the resorts past days, the treasure hunt that Ghost’s Uncle left for them is interesting and the friend group is pretty great! This will be an enjoyable series!

Only a Fling is a small town / work place / slow burn romance story that will leave you wanting more of this town and these characters.
Will and Lucy are both confident people who have a necessity to prove their capabilities to themselves and to others who may doubt them.
Lucy is out to prove she is more than capable of being a female foreman, while Will is to prove to his father he can manage a building Job solo. Neither have the time or are looking for a relationship but sometimes a connection is too strong to ignore.
I have to admit I admired Lucy's train of thought particularly about proving herself in an industry that is often seen a man's world but damn I really did struggle to like her and sadly she didn't really win me over by the end.

But Will saved this story for me. He was sexy, sweet, swoony, and gosh I wanted him to prove that he could do it to his father.
The added element of the treasure was fun and intriguing, while the secondary characters and the small town have me looking forward for the next story.
A wonderful start to a new series!

Only a Fling had some serious #GIRLPOWER in these pages as our heroine is definitely is succeeding in the male dominated world of contruction. Lucy owns a contruction company who gets hired to work on the renovation of the Kasper Ridge Resort which will definitely give her security in the future. Will is a super hot former fighter pilot who comes to Kasper Ridge to head up the renovation so they have some very entertaining banter along the way as combatants of sorts. Of course Lucy knows that city boys don't tend to stay so she's trying to make sure she doesn't allow the chemistry to ignite since it has all kinds of sparks flying. However, we all know the best laid plans tend to go awry despite our best efforts, and Lucy should have just gone with the flow sooner LOL! Only a Fling was a highly entertaining story that was easily finished in one sitting for me, and it was definitely filled with heart alongside the heat & entertainment so check it out as I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Having read Ms.Stewart’s work before i’ve been looking so forward to picking up more of her books! The second this first book in this new series was announced i knew i had to read it next! I jumped into the Kasper Ridge world as soon as i could. I enjoyed this first book!

Lucy and Will’s journey got my attention! I really liked how these two were brought together through the construction of the Kasper Ridge Resort. I couldn’t wait to see how these two would tackle working together as well as their attraction to one another. I was so glad that i got to dig into both of their minds!

I enjoyed getting into the world of Kasper Ridge and what the other characters brought to the story as well, especially Lucy’s Papa!

With Only A Fling, Ms.Stewart has created such a good beginning to this series! I am so looking forward to picking up the second installment, Only A Crush!

Just a Fling is a great start to a new series about hot ex-military fighter pilots.
Will wants to prove himself by taking on a new project with old friends, Ghost and his sister Aubrey. As he's managing the renovations of the Kasper Ridge Resort, he hires his new forewoman, Lucy, and her crew. I'll admit Lucy was a bit intense at first; however, making it in a man's world of construction, she has to be head strong and stubborn. These two had sparks flying from the beginning. It took a while for these two to finally get together but it was very much worth the wait.
I enjoyed meeting all of Will's friends who come up to Kasper Ridge to join in the adventure. The underlying mystery treasure hunt set up by Ghost's uncle was a great addition to the story line. I look forward to finding out what the treasure actually is and where as the series continues.

This is the first in a new series and is Will and Lucy’s journey. Will is a former fighter pilot, who goes to Kasper Ridge to help his old army buddy, who is the nephew and one of the people who inherited the resort from an eccentric uncle, who left a treasure hunt to be unravelled. Lucy is the owner of a construction company, and she is a force to be reckoned with in a male dominated world, where she has always felt undervalued. Will and Lucy work together, and the chemistry between them is combustible and undeniable, and they butt heads along the way, as well as having challenges to overcome. This is a well written story which has a tad angst, emotions, communication, mystery, family, friendships, humor, witty banter, emotions, and love, which leads to a steamy and compelling page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Lucy own a construction firm in a small mountain town. She is good at what she does but as a woman in the male-dominated industry, she has to keep her guard up. Will needs a break from trying to impress his dad and earn his place at his dad’s construction company in California. When his Navy pal Archie needs a hand refurbishing a ski resort his uncle left to him and his sister, Will jumps at the chance. Sparks fly between Will and Lucy but she is not sure how they can make their small town/big city romance work.

I really liked the characters in this book and the connection between Will and Lucy is both sweet and steamy. Woven into the romance is a mystery that Archie’s uncle left for them in the form of a treasure map. Over the course of this series, it sounds like that mystery will be unraveled.

I read an Advance Reader Copy of this story.

I adored Will and Lucy! Their story was the perfect start to this brand new series from one of my favourite authors. Will is a California boy, former military pilot who is needing a fresh start away from the family business and his Dad who likes to meddle . When his old buddy Ghost offers him a new job he jumps at the chance!  Lucy is Kasper Ridge born and bread! She is super close to her Papa, has great friends and loves her job as boss at the construction company she now runs. From the minute Will and Lucy meet the attraction is there but both are cautious. I adored the small town of Kasper Ridge and getting to see glimpses of all these wonderful characters who I hope we will all be hearing from again very very soon! Also I really need to know what the treasure is!
