Wanders has done it again. Another five-star read.
This book was a change of pace from her other fiction stories I have read, stepping into the realm of cyber punk/sci-fi. This virtual world coincides with the spiritual world in an exciting new series That blends Star Wars with ready player one reminiscent of the Aeon 14 series by MD Cooper. Interestingly enough, Cooper is another one of my favorite science-fiction authors, as well as a trans woman rocking the LGBTQ community in the sci-fi world, and Wanders dedicated the book to her so it appears the two have been romantically involved.

Anyway, this particular book is the start to what looks like is going to be a much bigger series. It takes place in the world of the “Streamiverse“ That used to be a ritual meta-verse that later evolved into a source of consciousness that flows through all living beings.

This is the part that was reminiscent of Star Wars because in some ways it reminds me of the Force.

The main character, Alina, is hinted to later become the main villain in the series. But this is her origin story. Her story is epic and well told, and I loved the first person POV which is unique in a sci-fi story. The glossary of terms at the end was also very helpful because this is a pretty hard science fiction, meaning the science behind it is meticulously researched and everything is backed to the point that it’s believable all of this could actually exist.

The world as we know it is a completely different place. The countries have merged into four continents and even the language has evolved into a combination of English and Chinese, kind of like that old series firefly.

You get very attached to the main character as you venture through her reality and her thought processes and even as she picks up a genetically modified pet cat with an attitude.

This book is so unique and well written I can’t wait to see what else the author does with this world.

What a fun book. Scifi books can be hit or miss for me, this one was a winner. Alina is a strong character in a cybernetic world trying to hold on to her humanity while working as an assassin. A job gone wrong leads her to make a fateful decision and the rest is history. Along with her AI, JET and the myriad of friends she’s accumulated along the way, she’s determined to earn money out of poverty all while Eli
Mating those in her way. The book is action filled, very well paced, and humorous.

Reflecting with the Main Character

First I want to say I appreciate the glossary of terms in the back of the book. Send this is a very interesting sci-fi story in this massive world that I expect plenty more books to be a part of according the the authors forward and End of book stuff. I found myself contemplating about the fact that the story is wrote in a perspective from the main character Aline. I won’t give spoilers but I will say when your main character is telling you what happens your first thought is ok well I know they will survive whatever is going to happen like a Disney kids movie. That doesn’t stop it from being filled with action and adventure. The writing was good and the story draws you in. I would recommend this to all my Sci-Fi friends that like that future cyborg stuff.

“Experimental Activation” by Qatarina Wanders is a fast-paced sci-fi thriller exploring how the main character Alina deals with suddenly losing an arm and having it replaced with a cybernetic one… and AI in her brain. While Alina may be able to outsmart the thugs out to kill her, will she be able to avoid going crazy with the things now in her brain?

The story moves fast and feels visceral and real, with plenty of action and plenty of dialogue. Definitely give it a try if you like sci fi or stories about AI/technology.
