I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Alexandra Ivy deftly weaves mystery, suspense, action, and romance in the fourth book in the Pike, Wisconsin romantic suspense series. Desperate Acts features Lia Porter and Kaden Vaughn in this chilling tale. Fifteen years ago, Lia was sneaking home after a party when she saw a woman running in terror. Now a skeleton has been found near the same spot. The police rule it a suicide, but Lia disagrees. Hollywood stunt driver Kaden Vaughn wants to know the truth about his brother’s betrothed who disappeared fifteen years ago. Lia and Kaden join forces to find the killer they believe is still in town.

Lia and Kaden are both likeable and relatable characters who initially seem very different. Lia likes to follow the rules, cares for others, and doesn’t initially seem to be much of a risk taker. Kaden has thrived on the adrenaline-inducing stunts that have been the trademark of his career. However, he has recently retired and started his own business. While Lia bakes when stressed, Kaden tears apart and rebuilds engines. Both of them show hidden depths as they face many challenges in the story. The other characters have varying levels of depth. Some are despicable, but are they killers or just hateful, controlling, and corrupt?

This riveting mystery captivated me from the prologue to its astonishing conclusion. The deeply involved plot has plenty of twists, turns, and surprises. The world-building was excellent. The author does a great job of making readers feel like they are experiencing the cold, snowy, icy conditions of winter in Wisconsin. The descriptive writing was fluid, suspenseful, and moved at a fast face. When two people with no trained investigation skills attempt to solve what they think is a crime, things don’t go smoothly and are often dangerous.

The storyline is grabbed my attention immediately. The characters are compelling, and readers got fantastic insights into their thoughts, behaviors, and actions towards others. This action-packed novel features death, power, corruption, humor, manipulation, ambition, secrets, romance, and much more. There are also references to bullying and domestic violence.

Overall, this was an intense story with likeable characters that kept me turning the pages. I was surprised several times by events. This kept the tension level high throughout the book. There was enough background in the novel that it worked well as a standalone. Those who enjoy crime thrillers, mysteries, and romance may want to check out this novel.

Desperate Acts by Alexandra Ivy
Pike, Wisconsin #4. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Trouble and death are again a problem in Pike, WI. The sheriff is away on his honeymoon, so the acting sheriff is the Mayor. The 15 year old skeleton that’s found has Lia remembering seeing the woman jump from the bridge when Lia was just a teenager. Kaden Vaughan believes the skeleton to be his brother’s missing fiancé. Lia and Kaden end up working together to solve the mystery and the subsequent murders that occur in the small town.

Suspenseful and gripping. A fast moving adventure of danger and puzzles.

I won a copy of this book from a Goodreads contest and the publisher Kensington. It’s an author and series I would have read regardless.

I really like Alexandra Ivy. Her books always have a layered mystery and a slow burn romance. She also takes full advantage of her local to add another dimension to her story. This book is part of a series but is a great standalone too. Lia is a wonderful heroine who is smart, private and isn't shy about what she wants and what she wants is Kaden. Kaden has been a success in the entertainment industry, but never cared for the phony women who inhabit that world. They make a wonderful couple who, together, solve this mystery.

As a teen, Lia witnessed a woman jump off a railroad bridge in the cold dead of night in December in Pike, Wisconsin. She searched the next day, but never found a body and assumed the woman was okay. Fifteen years later three boys discover a skeleton not far from where Lia saw the woman go over the bridge. Since the Sherriff, Zak, is on his honeymoon, the office is temporarily under the control of the nasty mayor who, for his own reasons, just wants this to go away. But, instead of going away a series of "accidents" claims more lives and the deputy can no longer ignore that what is happening is murder.

Social media is a boon and a curse. Pictures of the skeleton are posted and retired Hollywood stunt driver, Kaden Vaughn, recognizes the jacket as that of his brother's fiancée, Vanna, who disappeared fifteen years ago. He believes it is Vanna and comes to Pike to try and learn the truth and put this to rest in the memory of his dead brother. What he finds is a woman who ignites him and a mystery with bribery and conspiracy at its core. Vanna worked for the EPA and the circumstances of her disappearance were never fully explored. The deeper Lia and Kaden delve the darker and more complex the mystery of who Vanna was, and why she died, becomes.

I received an advanced reader's copy of Desperate Acts by Alexandra Ivy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this novel. The main characters, Lia and Kaden, were a really interesting pair. I liked their banter, chemistry, and story arc. The plot was engaging, the pacing moved swiftly, and (best of all!) the ending was not obvious from early on (something I appreciate).

Can’t wait for Alexandra Ivy‘s next novel!

Is the population of Pike really that oblivious? Four books later and this small town is full of secrets and psychopaths. Will it ever end?

Comparing the writing style of book one to four the author has developed splendidly it has been tightened where needed. The characters are fleshed out more and I actually liked them. Kaden and Lia are great together and the plot was enjoyable, different.

Why only three stars you wonder? Well I guessed who it was.

The prologue and first chapter of this book surprised me. I was instantly captivated by the prologue and hooked by the end of chapter 1. The book keeps up this slow build-up of intrigue that makes you question things right alongside the characters, making you crave answers by taking you along on this quest both Kaden and Lia have to find out the truth. I really liked this aspect of finding out what had happened, the complexity of the deceit and analyzing every aspect of it. It kept me hooked and ultimately made me finish the book. I even felt a little surprised at that plot twist at the end of the book, not at all expecting half of the resolution (because the other half had been given away in Kaden and Lia's musings, unfortunately).

So why only 3 stars? *sigh*

Well... A few reasons, really.

For one, the romance aspect only half worked for me. I liked both MC's, but their relationship development felt off. They go from complete strangers being attracted to one another to Kaden all of a sudden stroking Lia's cheek lovingly and then tumbling into "if something had happened to you, I don't know what i would've done". I can't put my finger on what made it not work: it felt rushed but the pace was okay, it felt like something was missing although there was attention to how they both were feeling... I can't tell what rubbed me wrong.

The other thing that led to this book being only "okay" (aka 3 star rating) is the suspense part of this romantic suspense. While I already established that I liked the intrigue and mystery, there was no suspense, no sense of urgency or heaviness about what was happening and what they were discovering. It gave this slow feeling to the pace of the book, even though there was a continuously action - either by people dropping dead or other events that went down. But quite frankly, this lack of urgency made reading it boring at times.

So, this book was okay but could've been a lot better, unfortunately. I liked the writing in this one though!

Entertaining for the afternoon if you like romantic suspense. Not great, but not bad. More on the mystery than the romance and the plot line of amateur sleuths was, eh.

About normal for this author, I like Zanetti's thrillers more, but not Zanetti's pnr. Go figure.

Kaden Vaughn is a former Hollywood stunt driver. He believes the skeletal remains found in Pike, Wisconsin, belong to his brother’s fiancé. Kaden intends to solve the woman’s mysterious disappearance for his deceased brother. However, the authorities’ methods in handling the case seem shady and dubious. Kaden’s only ally is the owner of the local grocery store. Someone does not want them poking their nose into the case and tries to scare them off. Can Kaden protect Lia from the true murderer? What terrible secrets will they dredge up? And at what cost?
Lia Porter runs and operates her family-owned grocery store. When a body is discovered near town, she recalls an incident she had witnessed fifteen years ago. Lia disagrees with the authorities’ conclusion on the case. The only person who shares her suspicions is the ruggedly handsome stranger from Hollywood. She and Kaden start their own investigation, only to learn more than what they bargained for. Someone in Pike wants to keep their secrets hidden, and they are willing to kill to keep them. Will Lia become another unfortunate victim? Will she and Kaden solve the fifteen-year-old case?
Kaden is such a positive inspiration. He came from a rough upbringing with an alcoholic father. Kaden wisely escaped that lifestyle and found his path in life. I admire Kaden’s determination to honor his brother’s memory by solving the case that destroyed him. He may not have liked his brother’s fiancé, but he set aside his differences to investigate her strange disappearance. What I like the most about Kaden is his protectiveness towards Lia. He knows their investigation is dangerous, and he did not want to jeopardize her safety or livelihood.
It took me a while to warm up to Lia. She came off too serious and strait-laced for my tastes. However, my opinion changed as the story progressed. Kaden’s presence allowed Lia to tap into her hidden adventurous side. I understand Lia’s dislike of how others viewed her. She grows tired of being labeled as a dependable, by-the-book killjoy, who refuses to take risks. What I admire the most about Lia is her reasons for keeping her family-owned grocery store open. It is more for the residents than profit.
DESPERATE ACTS is the fourth book in Alexandra Ivy’s romantic suspense series, PIKE, WISCONSIN. This is my first foray into the author’s romantic suspense books. I am more familiar with her paranormal romances. The story can stand alone. The only commonality each book in the series shares is the setting: a small town called Pike in Wisconsin. I like how the story focuses more on Kaden and Lia’s amateurish investigation than their romance. The romance element is there, but it is subtle.
DESPERATE ACTS is a gripping tale of two strangers partnering up to solve a cold case. I plan on checking out the other books in this series. I cannot wait to learn what other dark and dangerous secrets Pike, Wisconsin has.

Desperate Acts
2 Stars

As a teenager, Lia Porter witnessed a young woman running for her life near the railroad bridge in Pike, Wisconsin. Now, 15 years later, a female skeleton has been found in the same vicinity. While the police are quick to rule the death a suicide, Lia isn't as sure. Together with former stunt driver Kaden Vaughn, who believes the woman is his brother's missing fiancée, Lia decides to uncover the truth. But there is someone just as determined to keep their secrets hidden.

Series note: Aside from the location, the books in this series are unrelated and can be read separately.

Unfortunately, this is the weakest installment in the series thus far. The plotting is awkward, the romance is uninspired, and the villain is obvious from the moment they are introduced.

The book starts out on the wrong foot when a character in the first chapter makes the incongruous comment that nothing ever happens in Pike - umm, what?! This town has had two separate serial killers and several deaths so far...

As the story continues, the situations become even more nonsensical. The sheriff is away, and the mayor appoints himself as his temporary replacement. The bodies start piling up, and the locals don't bat an eye. Many of the clues come from Kaden's brother's files and quickly lead to a resolution, so why were the brother's private investigators unable to make the connections before?

As for the romance, Lia and Kaden's attraction is more tell than show, and the rapid progression of their relationship is not very realistic. While they are both likable enough, it is difficult to connect with their characters and truly care about their fates.

Overall, not the best example of Ivy' plotting. The next book focuses on Lia's best friend, Bailey, and Kaden's business partner, Dom.

Desperate Acts😳

Desperate Acts is the next book in the Pike series by this author and was definitely a suspenseful and exciting “whodunit” read❣️

Lia is a Pike local and runs the grocery store which has been in her family for generations. She also has a side gig but is very hush hush about it. When a skeleton is discovered under a bridge, she recollects having seen a woman jumping from a bridge and wonders if this could be her🤷‍♀️

Kaden is a famous stuntman who had his own show and is now just a regular mechanic. When he hears about a skeleton being discovered in Pike, he knows he has to investigate to bring closure to his deceased brother and hopes to put to rest a decade and a half mystery surrounding his brother’s missing fiancée😢 And if using his celebrity and name will help him achieve this…why not…but he never expected to happen upon Lia and her generosity in helping him in his quest😊

A very well written and intriguing story….I had my suspicions as I got closer to the end of the book but there was a definite twist I didn’t expect that knocked me for a six🥊 I received an advanced copy via Netgalley and willingly leave my honest review❤️

Beautifully written suspense romance, set in a tiny town, (Pike Wisconsin), in the middle of nowhere. Because the sheriff is away, Kaden and Lia join forces to solve the disappearance and possible murder of a woman, 15 years ago.

There were short points of view from other towns people who meet unfortunate incidents, and we're left in the dark as to the murderer, till the end. There are red herrings and twists. The only thing I wasn't really convinced about, was the romance, and how quickly they were suddenly in love. In like, yes, I believed that...

There's some action, drama and murder scenes with an engaging, detailed plot This book is part of a stand alone series, with the connection being the town.

🍪❄️30% under the book and I just realized I haven't even started my reaction review. So first thing I want to ask is how the heck they're openly manipulating cases?

🍪❄️I don't wanna talk about the mystery but I'm liking the romance part. Even the smut is not uncomfortable.

🍪❄️I mean you can't just reappear and want your kid back whom you sold 3years ago.

This is a book about a small town with its fair share of secrets. It has murder, sex and twists. However, it missed its mark with me. It wasn't a bad book it just wasn't, knock your socks off, great. I normally enjoy Alexandra Ivy's books, however, I had a hard time getting in to this one. Don't get me wrong, like I said before, it's not a terrible book. Maybe you should give it a chance and choose for yourself. It is a thriller and, I will admit, I didn't see the twist at the end. Alexandra Ivy is a wonderful author and I will be reading her next book.

Thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Books, and Alexandra Ivy for the opportunity to read this ARC.

This story exceeded my expectations. Any mystery book where I can't guess who the culprit is and why they did it, gets high marks from me. It is a complex story that seems very simple when you start reading. Bones are found and Lia remembers seeing a woman fleeing all those years ago. Kaden sees the story and goes back thinking he finally has a lead on what happened to his brother's fiancee. But local authorities want to sweep it under the rug, only more people end up murdered. Why and what did those people know and have in common. I did eventually figure out part of who the culprit was but not all nor the motive. I was left shocked and ready to read more by this author.

I will give credit for the mystery - I was surprised by the plot twists and did not see the ending coming at all.

However, so many parts of this book made me cringe. One of the main character’s eyes are described as looking like mercury or silver - nope, not unless he’s wearing some crazy contacts. He also repeatedly “snaps” his eyebrows together. And don’t get me started on the instant love and descriptions of feelings of attraction. At one point, Lia is described as a “sexy elf he would very much like to have on his shelf.” Barf.

"Desperate Acts" is the 4th installment in the "Pike, Wisconsin" series. I am a big fan of romantic suspense. I was introduced to this author last year, and I have made it my mission to read all 4 current books in this series. If you love good romantic suspense, this series is for you.

Each book in this series has focused on a couple. In this book, it's Lia and Kaden. Lia is the owner of a small grocery store - with a side business as an investor - in Pike. Kaden is a stunt man from Las Vegas, originally from Wisconsin. You may be asking yourself, what would bring these two strangers together? The answer would be murder.

When Lia was 15, she was leaving a party and saw a woman running away from something. She appeared scared, and Lia didn't know what happened to her. In the present day, a skeleton is found under a bridge where Lia saw the woman running all of those years ago. Kaden returns to Pike because he thinks the skeleton may belong to his brother's missing fiancée. This starts off a chain of events that results in a mystery with a lot of questions and few answers. Just when the reader thinks they know where the story is going, something else sends them in another direction.

This story can be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the whole series. There is a little bit of overlap, and there are references that call back to previous stories. Plus, as I have mentioned before, this is a great series!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the advanced reader copy of this incredible book! When I received it, I went back and started the entire series. I am so happy that I did! Romantic suspense is a great genre, and this series is fantastic. I highly recommend this book!

Lia grew up in Pike, a small town in Wisconsin, carrying a secret for fifteen years about a woman she saw jump off a bridge. A popular stranger arrives in town trying to find his sister-in-law after his brother's death. Was she killed? Did she freeze to death. Who found the bones? Fast read, strong characters. I rate this a 4.7.

This book is a page turner, and I really enjoyed it. Billed as a romantic suspense, it does justice to both tropes, though I'd say the suspense gets a little more love.

Desperate Acts is the fourth in the series but my first. I think each book is very much a standalone work, though this one makes several references to the sheer number of murders this small town has endured. It also relies heavily on the fact that the regular sheriff--the previous novel's hero--is on his honeymoon and completely unreachable; the town mayor, quite the shady dude, is filling in.

In this book, we have town market owner Lia and former Hollywood stuntman Kaden trying to figure out the mystery of a skeleton found by some local kids. Lia is sure it's the body of a woman she'd seen 15 years before, jumping from a bridge. Kaden believes it's his brother's long-lost fiancee. The two partner up and play amateur sleuths, subsequently poking the bear. As they rattle cages, they begin to realize that they've found the person they didn't realize they'd been waiting for their whole lives.

The suspense is well played and kept me guessing, mostly because several townspeople are shown early on as having something to do with the mess (through their own third-person chapters). While their guilt is clear, their individual levels of involvement aren't. I did ultimately figure it all out, but it took me longer than usual. That said, the big reveal comes with several pages of the guilty party explaining their genius step-by-step in the classic "You're gonna die, so I may as well confess everything in great detail" speech. The author did a great job stringing us along, unfolding bits and pieces along the way, so it felt a little like cheating to finish it all that way.

Overall, I really had fun with this book and would definitely pick up another in this series and by this author.

I received an ARC of this book for free from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!

An undeniably excellent story! “Desperate Acts” is a tale that will draw you in completely within the first chapter. You will anxiously turn the pages as a mystery unfolds and branches out into more mysteries. The tension will have you holding your breath, then sighing in relief. The story will take you into a labyrinth; lots of twists and turns, with a surprise around every corner.

Lia enjoys her small-town life in Wisconsin; but when the past resurfaces, her comfortable lifestyle is about to change. When a gorgeous man shows up in town; also connected to the same past, Lia's life is a little more distracted.

This is the first novel I’ve read by Alexandra Ivy. There is no doubt I will be reading more of her stories. She has an exceptional talent for compelling her readers to hang on to every word. If you are looking for an exhilarating, heart-pounding story, look no further; this novel is for you!

2.75/5⭐️ (I really wish Goodreads would let us do parts of stars instead of just the whole)

Read and reviewed as an ARC giveaway by Goodreads and Kensington Publishing. This book will be on sale February 21, 2023. The edition I was provided is an Advance Uncorrected Proof.

Having never read an uncorrected edition of a book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The first few chapters were enjoyable, but choppy, so I wasn’t holding out much hope. Then the story really got a hold of me and I quite enjoyed the rest of the book. It’s a nice little mystery that teases you with just enough information so that you think you know what’s going on and then throws in a twist right at the end. It took me longer to read than usual since I was on vacation, but it’s not a difficult read by any means, and probably should have only taken me a day or two under normal circumstances.

There’s not much in the way of character growth, but the romance is cute without being too distracting from the overall mystery. One ‘spicy’ scene (probably a 2ish on a 1-5 scale) and several passing references to the MCs’ physical attraction to each other, but outside of that the relationship is much more PG than I was expecting.

As far as violence goes (because it *is* a murder mystery, after all)… holy body count, Batman! Folks are dropping like flies in Pike! There’s definitely violence in the book (again, it’s a *murder* mystery), but I’d call it mildly graphic, not gory.

Overall, this was a fun read, but I don’t know that I would be chomping at the bit to read it again. There’s just something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on; as much as I enjoyed the story, I didn’t really connect with either of the MCs. It’s the sort of book I’d take on a plane or on a road trip since I wouldn’t be so engrossed in it that I couldn’t engage with my environment. That being said, I’d definitely be willing to read more of Alexandra Ivy’s books in the future; it was by no means an unpleasant experience. This is the 4th book in the Pike, Wisconsin series, but I had no trouble following the story. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone, though the author does recommend starting from the beginning since you may encounter people from the other books. Pike’s a small town, after all!

The following information has less to do with the actual content and more to do with the structure of the story. The edition I received is an advanced uncorrected copy, so many, if not most, of the issues I saw will probably be fixed prior to final publication. This is still a review, however, and my English teacher parents didn’t ingrain a disproportionate sense of structure in me for nothing, so the following commentary is purely what jumped out at me and may be ignored if you so choose. All references provided are based on the edition that I have in my possession.

- [ ] Pg 3 Par 5– “…a shadowed form appeared from the shadows.” Too many shadows for one sentence!
- [ ] Pg 244 Par 6– Lia is the one responding in this bit of dialogue, but based on what actually happened earlier in the book it needs restructuring. It sounds like originally Kaden was supposed to be the one speaking but when it was changed to Lia talking the appropriate reference point didn’t make the transition.
- [ ] Pg 245 Par 3– Lia thinks food sounds repulsive, but this information is just kind of dumped in there without explanation. Later we find out why, but the way it’s currently situated makes the sentence feel like an afterthought.
- [ ] Pg 247 Par 1– The description of the inside of the room feels forced and awkward. Also, verb tense inconsistency.
- [ ] The structure for the end of chapter 19 through the first half of chapter 20 feels very stilted and awkward, almost like it was written significantly earlier and the author hadn’t gotten the flow down quite right.
- [ ] Pg 277 Par 7 and Pg 329 Par 8 both have small typos (an extra apostrophe and a missed word, respectively) but I’m sure these will definitely get fixed before final publication.
- [ ] The romance, though cute, feels sort of dumped in your lap, like, “Here, hold this while I write a mystery.” It’s not really a slow burn and it’s not really a whirlwind; it just feels a little underdeveloped (except for the spicy scene; that part felt well done).
- [ ] The author uses a lot of fragmented sentence patterns to convey tone. This in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, but there’s a *lot* of it, and it honestly got really distracting at points. “Except for (xyz).” isn’t a full sentence, and that’s okay, but when it occurs 4 times in 2 pages, there might be an issue. I’m sure 99% of readers aren’t bothered by it, but this is my review and I felt it needed to be addressed.
- [ ] Parts of the book had very choppy sentence structure and it disrupted the flow in a lot of places. There were a lot of places where personally I think a semicolon, or comma, or something else that wasn’t a period might have been a better fit, but it might just be personal preference. This also ties in with the prior note about fragments, but on a much broader scale. Large portions of the book didn’t have this issue; they flowed well, and it didn’t feel like I was tripping over every third sentence. Where it did occur, however, it was really noticeable (for me).

Please note that these comments are purely personal opinions and are not intended to be a dig at the author. I myself have never written a book, so I have no functional experience in this field; I have a massive amount of respect for anyone talented enough to have even one book published, much less more than 15 *series* as Ivy’s done. These are just things that stood out to me as a reader. Everyone reads in their own way, and my pet peeves are probably not your pet peeves.

My desperate act was finishing. People were being killed for asking questions 15 years ago and in current time. Seems like our lead characters would have been more threatened earlier. Everyone talks to them and they run around collecting evidence freely. Why wasn’t Lia haunted enough to tell someone or do something years ago?? Twist at the end, but I just wanted to wrap. The premise is good the story was not my cup of tea.

Review Copy from the Publisher
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Desperate acts is the fourth volume in the Pike, Wisconin series. Of course I’ve reviewed the three previous ones: 1- Don’t look (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ), 2- Faceless (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ) and 3- Unstable (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... )
In my opinion, this series is quite uneven because I didn’t love all the books, but only for personal reasons, as a thriller non fan. Indeed, this series’ volumes generally tend toward this genre that I don’t read because it’s too shady. Yet from the beginning that’s exactly what’s happening. The small town effect where I feel like every inhabitant is hiding horrible things in his closet doesn’t help either.
Desperate acts is the first to receive the maximal rating from me. There’s less of the thriller side and more of the romantic suspense side, with less shady elements in spite of the setting still being the small town of Pike.

The story begins some times after the end of the previous volume. The new sheriff, Zac, hero of the previous volume, has gone on vacation with his wife and the mayor is sheriff in the interim.

The book begins by a prologue in which our current heroine, Lia Porter, comes home discreetly after having sneaked out and meets a young woman so panicked she jumps over a bridge. The first chapter takes place around fifteen years later when a body is discovered by some young inhabitants. Lia immediately thinks about the young woman she had met.

Our hero, Kaden Vaughn, is a former stuntman who made a brilliant career in Hollywood, especially in a reality show in which he was the star. He’s now the owner of his motorcycle repair shop. He had a brother who died some times before. The latter had a fiancé (that Kaden didn’t really like) who suddenly disappeared several years ago. His brother went on looking for her without the hero knowing it. At his brother’s death, while sorting through his stuff, Kaden finds all his notes and feels guilty not to have helped him. So when he learns, through social networks, that an unknown woman was found in Pike, where he knows she had worked, he goes there to check if it’s really her.

Neither Lia nor Kaden have any detective experience but each wants to check if the unidentified woman is the one they are thinking about, and if it is, pushed by guilt, they want to find the truth. But the mayor throws a wrench in the gears and refuses to listen to them.
So our heroes decide to join forces, Lia as resident of Pike and Kaden as a star people recognize, to investigate themselves, helped by the deputy sheriff off the record.

I liked the suspense side where the reader quickly has information but with some twist events until the resolution of the suspense.
As for the romance side, I always appreciate how Alexandra Ivy manages the love story and the evolution of the feelings.
Once the book closed, we have all the answers to our questions and we believe in the HEA.

I’m a little less fond of most secondary characters, that is the young inhabitants of the town, some of whom are bullies, and some adults. It’s a small town and it’s a fiction, would it not be possible to have another kind of behavior in a story? It’s the only negative point in the book for me.

I don’t know if the author intends to have another book in the series. If it’s the case, I will of course be on board as a fan of Alexandra Ivy.

DESPERATE ACTS is the fourth instalment in Alexandrea Ivy’s contemporary, adult PIKE WISCONSIN romantic, suspense series. This is thirty-five year old, former motorcycle stuntman Kaden Vaughn, and thirty year old Lia Porter’s story line. DESPERATE ACTS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from third person perspective DESPERATE ACTS follows in the wake of the discovery of a skeleton. Fifteen years earlier, a then fifteen year old Lia Porter stumbled across a woman in uniform, jumping off the local bridge. Fast forward to present day, and a skeleton has been discovered near the area where the woman had jumped. The local mayor declared the case closed, claiming the woman to be a suicide but Lia knew better, having watched from afar, as the woman ran for her life. Former Hollywood motorcycle stunt driver Kaden Vaughn never thought he would return to Wisconsin but the discovery of a female skeleton pulled Kaden to small town of Pike, where he would meet local grocer Lia Porter, a woman with a vested interested in the town’s discovery. Kaden Vaughn was sure his late brother’s fiance’s body had been found but the more Kaden and Lia began to unravel the secrets and lies, the target on their back, and several residents of Pike, is getting bigger by the day. As the injured and dead begin to accumulate, someone is desperate to keep secret what happened years before including blackmail and a possible connection to the EPA.

The relationship between Kaden and Lia is one of insta-lust to love; a joint venture in searching for the truth. Lia witnessed the victim’s jump to her death, and Kaden suspects the skeleton belongs to his brother’s fiancé. Working towards a mutual outcome, Kaden and Lia are pushed together as desperation forces a confrontation between the present and the past. The lone $ex scene is passionate but mostly implied.

Pike, Wisconsin is a town operated by corruption-from the judge to the mayor to local businessmen, wanna-bees and has beens looking to hide years of crimes. With every interview and investigation, another body is discovered, someone is poisoned, anyone who talked to Lia and Kaden, end up dead or injured. My only concern is the lack of any real law enforcement or FBI involvement. Two people looking for answers solve fifteen years of crime and passion.

DESPERATE ACTS is a tragic story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, murder and mayhem. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is tender; the characters are spirited and determined.

Back to Pike Wisconsin we go where a seemly peaceful small town is actually secretly full of unsolved murders... no matter if a murder occurred 5 mins ago or 15+ years ago it never fails that as soon as someone looks into an old murder that happened that more murders will occur in the present...

Fifteen years ago Lia saw a woman jump off a bridge and since she couldn’t find the woman upon looking she never mentioned it to anyone... until the bones are found all these years later and there are identifying markers that indicate it was the woman she saw all those years ago. Unfortunately the sheriff is out of town and the mayor is play acting as law enforcement but really doing a whole lot of nothing... until the bones are found and he starts trying to cover things up...

Kaden left Wisconsin many years ago and had no interest in returning until he learned about the bones and saw a picture. Fifteen years ago his late brother’s fiancé went missing and he has a feeling this is her. His brother spent years trying to find her but never managed to figure out what happened. Now he feels it’s his job to finally get the closure his brother would have wanted. Too bad the mayor isn’t really interested in investigating...

Because it’s Pike what follows is multiple murders and attempted murders and break-ins and all kinds of dangerous shenanigans. Lia and Kaden seem like the only two people trying to get to the truth. The mayor, a businessman and a judge all seem to be involved especially when they start ending up dead. Are they killing each other off or is somebody else dabbling in a little vigilante Justice all these years after the fact? Together Lia and Kaden attempt to untangle the web of lies, corruption and murder because Pike is a small town with an escalating body count to rival Cabot Cove, Maine. (Yes that is in fact a Murder She Wrote Reference)

The story does take a rather unexpected turn in the end and until a meeting with someone from the victim’s past you can’t really guess who the killer is and why. This was though the first series of murders in Pike unrelated to the former sheriff whose death in the first book more or less sparked all the craziness in the town coming to light in the series. Another good read I do love a good mystery that keeps you guessing.

While I’ve read several of the Pike Wisconsin series, they can be read individually. This latest is the author’s most intricately woven plot yet. There’s the discovery of an old skeleton by local teenage boys. This begins to unravel secrets buried for years with random acts of violence following the discovery.
The local sheriff is on his honeymoon leaving a status seeking, power hungry mayor in charge. He has no intention of opening an investigation on such an obviously cold case.
Far away in sunny Vegas retired stuntman/actor and heart pounding handsome Kaden reads about the skeleton and immediately knows her identity. She was his late brother’s fiancé and he feels obligated to get the justice his brother couldn’t.
Lia owns a small grocery store in Pike. The gossip is raging over the skeleton and one of the teens works for her part-time. Kaden and Lia feel the same flutters and sparks when they meet. Lia has knowledge of folks in the small town that Kaden lacks, they team up to get answers. The two of them chase clues, follow leads, ask too many questions and stir up a hornets nest of trouble. The skeleton has a story to tell that powerful people want snuffed out. Danger follows them as the murderous villain tries to keep secrets buried like the skeleton was supposed to be. There were sharp turns and endless false leads, greed, power and jealousy, dark lies and secrets. I could barely keep up with the twisted plot .
It was fascinating to follow Lia and Kaden as they developed a connection and the romance simmered and popped. All while trying to solve a mystery decades old and not get killed themselves. It may sound cliché but this is the best yet by the author. Unstoppable action and superb characters, tense suspense and oozing passion, highly recommend.
I’d like to thank NetGalley, Alexandra Ivy and Kensington Books for the digital advance reader copy of “Desperate Acts”. These are all my own honest personal thoughts and opinions given voluntarily without compensation.
