Artemis University #9

Managing Expectations

Rate this book
My name is Tamsin Vale… And I’m no longer no one. I’m not simply an abandoned orphan without any answers. Granted, most of the answers led me to ask more questions, but I have at least some now. Fairies aren’t what I was promised they would be and I’m certainly not what they want, but I’m the only one who can save them from their magical prisons. They’re the best help I have to fix so many wrongs in the world and keep the ones I love safe, given all the threats against me. And if that wasn’t enough to crack my sanity, I’m still on rocky ground with the men in my life. Why the hell did I think it was a good idea to get involved with more than one? I’m trying not to run. After almost two decades of knowing that the only way to keep myself safe is to run, it’s not a reaction I can easily change. I might be making a mistake by not running away from what people want of me. Because who I might become to defeat the monsters would be as bad as the people I’m fighting against. Artemis University is an ongoing hot burning reverse harem, university-age paranormal academy series with darker elements, strong language, violence, and a heroine who follows her own moral compass of what is right… And who she ends up giving her heart to.

Love the series but not my favorite

She said in her book she needs reviews to know which series people want to see. I LOVE this series but I am not a fan of her other works. Partly because she drastically needs an editor who cares about grammar and the way things are worded. Because a lot of times I have to reread sentences to make them make sense. And sometimes that means changing, adding, or removing words. And partly because her other story lines just do not interest me. All that being said, I am disappointed in this effort. She’s going to lose readers if she truly thinks she will draw out this story to 26 books. I’m tired of the relationship drama. Done. The father was a nice touch. I don’t like the way Mel defected but that does happen in real life so I don’t have to. But the book felt endless. I was ready to skip to the end at 20%. I will say that if I had done that, I would have missed something big at about 80%. Which unfortunately made the ending a little bit anticlimactic. It’s time to start bringing the plot together. It’s not going to make it to 26 books. I adore this series and re-read it at least once a month but if there are many more like this one, I will give up before the end. I’m sad I have to leave this review but I believe in being honest. It probably deserves a lower star rating but I like the series as a whole and I just can’t do it. I am looking forward to more though because it is a good series. Hopefully it gets better and we start to get some resolution.

The author needs to wraps things up.

I love this series but I’m getting tired of all the time that the author has to prove her point about sexism and women’s right. I get it, she created a world where men are disgusting and all the women are seeing as nothing but accessories but I think you have made your point 5 books ago. No need to keep bringing it up and making almost every single dialogue about it. It’s just getting too old for me. The fact that the author needed to bring up Buffy to once again prove her point it was just too much for me. I’m all for women’s right in our world and I will be the first one to defend it. But if I wanted to know the writes opinion on the subject (which I already do since book 1), I could have gone to a forum or social media to discuss it. Not read a fantasy RH book.

Also, the author need to star wrapping things up. The story is moving too slow and I don’t know how much longer I can stay invested. I usually don’t read series longer than 5 books because it starts to get repetitive and many chapters are irrelevant to the main story so I am surprised that I’ve lasted so far. But if things don’t start to move in a faster pace I might give up. And that will be really sad because I really like this world and this series.

I’m so tired of the relationship drama. I feel like the author want to make it seem more realistic because relationships are not easy, so it can’t be all sunshine and roses all the time. But it’s always the same issues that are brought up so it just keep going in circles.

The dad was a nice touch. It actually made me really happy that he was introduced on this book but the end was very anticlimactic. I feel like I can predict how the other books will go: 1. More of the same relationship drama. 2. More of the FC trying new food and writing reviews (which I don’t get why this is still being featured in detail) it’s boring and irrelevant to the main story. 3. The FC taking down each corrupted council man one book at a time. 4. More and more books full of dialogues that only discuss sexism and women’s rights.

Frustrating

I have loved this series immensely, especially the first 6, and read them all in a week. HOWEVER Since the 7th book it’s become harder and harder to like Tamsin......Yes she is a badass who twats the bad guys like flies and it’s fantastic how she handles them. But she has become unbearable, self-centred,manipulative and very hypocritical. It’s actually disgusting how she treats the guys. She gets angry and flips about the most inconsequential things they say or do. They can’t even have their own damn opinions that is contrary to hers! And I find that there no real communication between the guys and her, it’s always sex or them apologising for something so she doesn’t get too upset and break up with them. The relationship between the 5 of them is shaky at best and every second I’m thinking she’s gonna blow them off again for some dumb reason and then arghhhhhhh......it’s just too much. Oh but wait....now the guys are super self conscious of everything they do and say around her, they are always walking on shells around her, so she gets mad that they are not being themselves and they’re making her feel guilty. So they apologise again! see how she just made that about herself and played victim.
Finally Mel, goodness another glaring example of Tamsin always playing victim and never owning up to shit when it concerns her close friends. She hurt Mel, and didn’t even apologise....but why would she when she’s convinced herself she was in the right and again made it all about herself and how Mel had abandoned her blah blah blah! Like how about the fact that MEL is also going through shit and you haven’t checked on her either.....I understand that what she did was to protect Mel but I know for damn sure if the tables were turned she would have reacted the same way or worse.

Put out your DO NOT DISTURB sign and get ready for a fantastic draw you in book and series!

LOL I have to admit that I stalked Amazon for Erin R. Flynn's new Artemis University book. This book series is that amazing! It helped that in one of her books she mentions that she'd like them to be about 6 weeks apart so that I knew roughly when to start the stalking! And if you've read this series from book 1 - Upended Life then you know you'll love this book too! I have to say I can't wait to see what is in Book 10! I love the direction this book took us the reader from page 1 to the end of the book. And I can't wait to see what happens next to all the characters.
Thank you Erin R. Flynn for writing books that pull us in and give us a little escape from the real world! I really can't wait to see what you come up for the next book!

It might be best to take a break from this series

Flynn has an absolutely astounding ability to craft a story, but her personal views are taking away from the plot and making this series not enjoyable to read. Women's rights are crucial, but when 70% of a book is a diatribe against the world, relationships, and men in general, it doesn't further the story. Why was there a 2-page rant against Buffy? What the hell does that have to do with anything? Most of this book was the author's personal feelings, which made it disjointed and choppy. And the sloppy editing and grammar mistakes didn't help. Take a breath, work on something else, and come back to this series when you're ready rather then trying to continue to push the insane pace of a book a month. Your readers will appreciate you more and your series will be better served with a break.

I still like this series, now after Mel, Izzy gets less and less page time. Don't like that. Also her relationships are not stable. Two are set. Two others are ups and downs...

Eagerly waiting!

I love this series so much! As soon as book 9 became available, I immediately downloaded it. The interpersonal relationships are fascinating, the powerplays are mesmerizing. The revenge *chef's kiss*. My partner is amused because I keep saying how much I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

What happened with Mel is... I'm not certain what words to use, but damn that hurt. But it was Tamsin's truth and I 100% understand how that impacted her.

And Izzy is adorable! I hope there's maybe a love interest for her? But PLEASE not one that's going to F her or Tamsin over. (I may have used too many exclamation points.)

I can't say enough good things about this series and am eagerly awaiting the next book!

Book 9

This series does not disappoint or seem to drag on as the case can be when you hit book nine. The author tied up a few minor story lines while giving us a new development. As she continues to write stories we see the character development of Tamsin and her mates. Yes she has PTSD but like people with that she is recognizing it and dealing. With the way the story ended, we hope that this is a wake up call for Task in to and MS. Flynn continues to grow the character even more, while writing an engaging story with each story line being tied up so when the last book is written we all see Tamsin and the guys get their happily ever after.

Yes!!!! So good, a great book as always

I will admit I'm a fan and have read every book in the series. I was stalking Amazon waiting and once it was out a huge yes I need it. I really was not disappointed at all, ramped up and ready to see what is next. I love the character development and watching everyone grow and learn from their mistakes. This is such a wonderful series that I find myself rereading way more often than I want to admit. If you're not sure if this is a series for you my advice is to take a chance on it, I don't regret it one bit.

Cool things happen but MEH

This is the 1st 4 star i have given this series. It makes me sad. I have been a big supporter from the beginning but its starting to feel like its not romance no el anymore but a political statement and it gets tiring. I get it. I am a woman. But dang, it seems in this book there are only 3 options as a woman... 1-victim 2-c$nt 3-tamsin supporter... thats it. And every dang woman meet that isn't #2 seems to get her own dang monologs about her life...it...it just started pulling me away from the story line to the point I couldn't keep focus. Example books 1-5, I would read straight through even if it cost me my sleep. This book, I was ordering groceries and checking emails...to me that means the story feels spread too thin. The crappy part is some kick ass stuff happens this book but all the sidetracked with too many damn stories made it leave a sour taste in my mouth. I miss the romance novel and the unknown making her way, not this over monologing Katniss Everdeen BS. Like, I know she had a SUPER shitty start, but seriously she's 20 and jot in charge of the world but every speech she makes feels like she's trying to take over the UN. I think I am just done with the press conference feeling all the time. Just tone it back. I like a little side story and the message, but are u changing the premise to a womens rights book with few sex scenes or is it a romance novel that is encouraging the reader to enjoy the book and see a point?

Tamsyn is dealing with the councilmen one at the time, and now she has the help of her father who is the last of his kind. Tamsyn finds out that she's not just the Light Fae Queen's daughter, and that her powers vastly surpass her mother's.

I was left completely disappointed by this book, especially by the behaviours that Tamsyn assumes. She makes a mistake? Sure, no problem. One of her guys or her best friend do it? They are unforgivable. She demands them to accept her choices, but when they make choices she doesn't like, she "closes her heart" to them because they are now what she want or need in her life.

I continued this series in the hope that the books would be as good as the first few, but I keep being disappointed.

OMG!!!

Ms. Flynn you did it again. I can't even. I'm always excited when I read your books. Tamsin Vales execution of justice is balm my my Iibra soul. Thank you for this series. I have always loved a strong female lead, but you also touch on the pain and insecurities that come with it. Please please please never give up on this series!

If you haven't read this series you really should give it an honest try. If you don't, then you don't deserve it's amazingness.

Best so far

Loved it, I feel like it’s the best in the series so far. It’s tied up a lot in this book. I was happy that Tams n her men are finally in a good place. I’m outraged with Mel, shocked to the core.... I’m looking forward to the next book.

I am having trouble liking Darby, maybe him saying agra ALL THE TIME. I cannot handle the nicknames every damn page.. EVERY paragraph they talk.. especially since this is a 20+ book series. I do appreciate how Lageos was introduced, favorite part!

Oh boy!!

Again, with the cynical, "woe is me," "everyone is gonna leave me" mentality!!! It's exhausting!!! If I were one of these guys she's with, I would've left Tam. She is too much at times. I despise Neldor, and I think he should be gotten rid of!!! I hope Mel is out of Tam's life for good. That was pretty two-faced. I LOVE Lageos!!! Super cool Dad right there!!! And I seriously hope she stops this whiny, everyone is gonna leave me, I'm a monster crap. Either be strong and fierce or don't!! The back and forth is exhausting!!!

much better

this is probably my favorite book in this series. there have been times I debate wether or not to read the next book. I don't really like how Tamsin treats her men. while I understand her trauma, I don't like it how everytime is their fault and felt she wasn't growing. also, all the added drama and crying turns me off. but this book was much, much, better. more normal drama. her relationships handled much better, more equal, and I hope they continue to get better. the learning experience she has at the end of the book is huge and I hope she does really learn from that and not become more monstrous than the monsters.

I love these books

AU is my favorite series from this author. Sometimes it’s a bit much, and the underlying political message is strong..... but that is how it is SUPPOSED to be. Vale is an astounding characters, surrounded by equally astounding characters set in a world ripe with corruption, and just being to be healed. It’s both delightful, and painful - and I’m here for the ride.

3.5 the drama is always ongoing. But it’s starting to get repetitive. I do like that it takes work to resolve issues but it’s getting a bit old. But I do really like Tamsin dad. So happy she found him. And glad he’s helping clear up some of the bullshit. Also, Mel went from badass to completely unsatisfying

I Finished It Too Quickly

As with the rest of the series, I really enjoyed this book. It feels like Tamsin is growing and learning which is fun to experience. The editing may not be perfect but I love the story and will continue to read the series.

Too long without an end

The story and characters are good but there seems to be no end in sight. Even after 9 books the story Seems to keep going on
Would appreciate bigger books or lesser parts of books so there is continuity in reading and an end

Please note the following review encompasses books 7 through 12 of the SERIES. As each book depends on the prior books, I am not reviewing each individually to cut down on repetition. Following this review, I will be reviewing the series in batches of 5, with a final end review of the series as a whole.

As always, I will endeavor to minimize spoilers, but please read at your own risk.

OH.MY.GODDESS.

I am practically speechless right now. I just closed my Kindle on that wicked relationship cliffhanger at the end of book 7, and my better half (at least according to him) is laughing at me for looking like a fish with my mouth opening and closing. (He's a real peach 🍑, 😆)

So far, I can honestly say that I have never read anything like Artemis University before. It is one of a kind, which honestly makes me a little sad, because it is so freakin amazing. It is nonstop. Full out. Action, coming of age, romantic relationship drama, friendship makers and breakers, enemies to lovers, heiress to the empire ... I could go on except I can't find the words. This series has everything you could want. Hot and steamy. Warm and domestic. Plus some swashbuckling and tight pants. It is almost the Princess Bride of romance series.

Well, if Buttercup was really a Fairy, and there were multiple Wesleys, some of whom are quite dark on the morally gray scale. The R.O.U.S.'s easily could translate to the assorted corrupt elders and councils, provided they could survive and even thrive away from the Fire Swamp ....

I am getting way off track. Anywho, there is a metric frakton that happens in these 5 books, but I am not going into details. No spoilers, remember? Just trust me. Have someone hold your beer and download the first book. It feels like a crazy leap, but you will love every moment of learning to fly.

However, before I go, I do want to add a content warning of sorts because mental health matters. Contained in the story so far, you will find past trauma (physically, emotionally, and smexually.) There are forced abductions, bullying outside of the harem, references to ongoing trafficking, violence, attempted forced mating and SA, intimate partner abuse, family disconnect and related trauma from both sides, and discussion of forced breeding. Please know your limits and read responsibly.

“Another one” (in my best DJ Khalid voice)

I don’t know what else I can say that all the 5star ratings can’t say for themselves.

The fact this author spits these awesome books out, close to clock work, every 6 weeks is increasingly impressive. Add in the fact there MIGHT have been a total of 5 grammatical errors that were so small they didn’t change the flow of reading... Erin you’re killin the game. This series is a one click purchase for me every time they’re released!

This story has everything a paranormal romance, or just a regular romance, fan would want in a story.

- Believable RH that’s more than just sex
- A physically AND mentally strong female lead
- A KIIIIILLER story aside from the romance
- Strong morals examples given throughout the story that make me whisper *hell yeah*
- Killer mic drop dialogue/monologue
- And an endless list of “somethings” that amp up my need for more!!

I have to be honest and say this is the first book I didn’t finish in 1-1.5 days, but that was ONLY because I didn’t want it to be over with the next book in the series unavailable to me to pick up right after 🥺.

Patience is the key here people.. we all need to learn that some how in 2021 with insta-everything I guess.. right?

It's Spring Break and before they get to relaxing they have a trap to spring for the Vampire council. Tamsin does something really sneaky to one of the councilmen behind it as well. Julian is being a yes man and Tamsin really wants him to snap out of it. As they binge through food and old TV shows Darby, Hudson, Lucca and Julian become closer even as Tamsin tries to make headway with healing her relationships.

Before classes are to start again, Tamsin is going to revive more fairies. This time there will be a difference, some of these fairies are severely wounded. Those fairies with the best healing abilities would be standing by to heal as they wake. Faerie once again takes hold of Tamsin hurting her once more. She can't move and she needs to let go of the reservoir so Iolas can heal her.

In the aftermath she compares this to a story she once heard and then she walks away.

The discovery of her father and what he is shocks Tamsin, but it also explains a lot of things. Especially with regard to her power.

So many things in this book as Tamsin takes more control of her life, but also allows help from a different source. Reveals that aren't really reveals are both fun and interesting.

Laughter, tears, fun, fighting and of course plenty of sizzle in the page-turning read. I really can't wait to see what's next for Tamsin.

DNF

These books are getting way to repetitive, and I'm losing all enthusiasm for the story and her relationships. Sick of the relationship drama and FC constantly preaching about women's right. You made your point 5 books ago, there is no need to drag it out. The readers get that they don't live the in 1800s but maybe change it up a bit because for the past 8 books it's the same kind of thing and just boring to read now.

The author also needs a good editor, there are so many grammatical mistakes, and because of this a lot of the sentences don't make sense. I'm having to re-read sentences and either take/change words out for it to make any sense.

Don't think I'll continue with this series as I can all ready tell you what happens....
- Relationship drama
- Sexism drama
- Everybody wants the FC because of her power which leads to another lengthy speech
- Everybody wants or is jealous of FC just because....
- Councilman drama and her taking down the bad guys, with her 22 year old genius mind whilst going up against vampires and warlocks that are hundreds of years old and apparently still listen to school drama so they constantly make mistakes... LOL 🙈

I will be shocked if these don't happen in the next book but I think I am done with this series now. The author needs to wrap it up and stop dragging it out.

*sigh*

I love this story idea. Mixing all my favorite super and magic and fairies is awesome. I even like the female empowerment line. Seriously great to see this in anything. But enough already. We get it. And I would have kept reading this book after book until I was done. Until you crapped on Buffy. Seriously? It’s a television show. It’s like what’s his name crapping all over Murphy Brown (another tv show) for being a single parent. I get that this next generation is bigger on equality and I’m all for it. But did we have to use 3 freaking pages to say how sexist Buffy the vampire slayer was?! And that was the smallest part. I think it’s truly awesome of fiction writers to bring their ideas and thoughts about society and it’s wrongs into their stories. It is actually a great way to see how other ppl view things and learn something I may not have paid attention to before I read the book. But it can get so annoying that the actual story gets lost. Not only that but the reader stops caring about whatever social issue is being brought up. And that’s where I’m at with this series. I’m actually surprised it took me nine books. I’m a feminist. I see the patriarchy and rail against it. But I just wanted a cool story. Not a dissertation on how fiction of times past (and things we should learn from) belittles women.

My Thoughts
On a somewhat unrelated note to the book itself, some comments are made among the characters about the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer that I gotta say hurt a bit lol. To each their own though. Beyond that little gem, a ton happens here. Someone important is found in Faerie, some people are acting out of character, and classes get frustrating. That's the short version of the tip of the iceberg.

About the Characters
Mel is a freaking disappointment. Neldor is a class A jerk. Hudson and Darby are good while Craftsman makes me a little sad. Katrina is fantastic. Tamsin is a trooper with so much on her shoulders.

Things I Liked
We get some closure on a couple villains which is satisfying. There are a couple showdowns that made me happy and sad all at once.

Thing I Didn't Like
I'm sad about Craftsman and Mel. He was always a favorite of mine and I hate how Mel reacted when Tamsin tried to do right by her and how that relationship fell apart.

More Thoughts
Every time I wonder how things can get more interesting, or raise the stakes, the author proves she's got this and keeps me addicted and glued to every page.

Does it standalone?
Just no.

Bottom Line
Full of closure, hope, and sadness, this book took me through a variety of emotions and I can't wait for more.
