Rate this book
A woman plunges into the dark corners of the Big Easy to clear her ex-husband of murder in a novel by the New York Times best-selling author of Deadly Fate.

Ann and Jon Marcel are a rare case; five years after their divorce, they're good friends, and Ann has come to love Jon's hometown of New Orleans. Until the day Jon staggers through her door covered in blood and mumbling, "I didn't do it." Jon is charged with murdering a stripper, and in order to save him, Ann will have to dive into the sordid New Orleans underworld, looking for clues in erotic clubs and seamy jazz spots. And, if that weren't enough, she must deal with the resolute detective bent on bringing her husband to justice - the eagle-eyed lieutenant who dogs her steps and surfaces in her dreams. But despite her wavering affections, Ann has bigger concerns as she becomes embroiled in a fight not only for Jon's freedom, but also for her life.

Down in New Orleans is a thrilling tale of romantic suspense by the best-selling and award-winning author of the Krewe of Hunters series, called “a master” by Booklist.

"anger was passion"

I could not of been more pleased by this book!
As soon as i started i was hooked, i am not joking - when i finished reading the first page i knew i would have to know everything. I didn't have as much time to read this book non-stop as i would normally do but every time i had to stop reading i was thinking about it & rushing to read it again.
I was describing this book to a friend while i was reading it, this is what i said; suspense, drama, mystery and sex. What more can you ask for? The book got more exciting as i read, so many twists and turns along the way. I found myself shouting at the characters, like i do when i watch i thriller movie :) "Runnn!" Was the thing i shouted the most.
The chemistry between the couple, wow! The author gave amazing descriptions of all characters and situations, i felt like i was right there in the scene with them most of the time. The sex scenes where hot, i want so badly to get stuck in a cabin with Mark :)
Read this quote for an idea of the passion between them -
"Then he was swearing, his fingers on the silk panties she wore.
She felt the rip. She opened her mouth to protest. But it didn't matter."

The ending, i never saw it coming.. i wanted to jump up & down with excitement when i read it. It was so awesome! The couple also got their HAE so it was a brilliant wrap up overall.

I would recommend this book and I like to read more by this author.

It wasn't until I was searching for the links for this book that I discovered that it is a re-issue with a new cover & I'm sure some updating on the language& things like cellphones. since i have never read it, I'm intrigued by it.

This is a different take on the typical Graham book, this time the woman isn't a cop, or even close to being a cop, she's an artist. For a book placed in New Orleans the only Voodoo participant is a secondary character & there aren't any ghosts this time. Ann is an artist & the ex-wife of an artist hersefl.

Ann's not a native of New Orleans, she's however fallen in love ( I mean who wouldn't it's New Orleans) with the city & made it her home, on what should've been a typical day, her ex shows up, late to their meeting and when she answers the door, he's covered in blood & almost dead, but he insists " I didn't do it, I didn't do it". The cops seem to want an easy case, he's the most likely suspect but Ann can't accept that, the man she was married to would never do this & it's up to her to prove that to the cops.

Now I'm all for woman power, & doing what needs to be done; but I also know that barreling into a place where Angels fear to thread is a fool's gamble, yes eventually she did something right, but in the process she almost got killed, almost got several other people killed all to prove 1 person innocent. O_o. While I was reading on Goodreads I stated : "Sometimes I dream, that idiotic characters get killed just so they learn their lesson the hard way. Your not a cop, even if you are right you shouldn't be a bigger idiot insisting on doing it your way." Why trust complete strangers but not the cop, you may or may not be dating?!?!?

I liked Ann, she was older, a mother a woman comfortable in her own kin, a little headstrong, & bullheaded but with a heart of gold. She cracked me up when she started taking lessons on dancing, even though she had never been a strip club before. Her inner monologue of how not to stand out had me cracking up. Mark was a great guy, one who clearly knew himself & what he wanted, although he kept telling himself to leave Ann alone he just couldn't. Together they just fit & I liked it, I loved knowing they had great loves before & weren't necessarily unhappy people until they met each other. Mark's granddaughter was cute & provided the necessary levity when needed.

There were several viable prospects as the villain, from the smooth (almost too smooth) strip club owner, to the cop who might be dirty, to the cousin who was also a little smooth. I mean it jumped from person to person, depending on the layers being revealed, which of course kept me glued to it.

The villain in this novel took the concept of keep your friends close & your enemies closer. I so didn't know who to suspect but still wouldn't have picked them as the one. Just didn't see it at all. I loved the slow burn of the romance, especially their visit to the bayou. Can I get one of those please?? I didn't know the difference between Cajun & Creole but it explains so much now.

It's a really good story & a great read. I loved it. It's of course by one of my favorite authors, so it's well worth reading.

This book was originally published back in 1996, I believe. This is a digital copy provided to me by Open Road Media and Netgalley. The book has been re-issued and updated in e-book format and is available through Open Road Media and anywhere e-books are sold.

Heather Graham has been writing novels for many years. She is the author of historical romances and paranormal romances, as well as romantic suspense. This book is a romantic suspense novel with a touch of the paranormal.
This month Heather Graham has been giving us 31 reasons why she loves New Orleans. This book lines up nice with her blogs and facebook posts.

Jon and Ann are still best friends even though they are divorced. Both are artist and recently Jon has been doing drawings of a high class group of strippers at an infamous Jazz club. He meets and falls in love with Gina, but then both Jon and Gina are stabbed. Gina dies, and Jon is in a coma, accused of Gina's murder.
Ann doesn't believe for a minute that Jon killed Gina. She is determined to find out the truth. This puts her in direct opposition to the two detectives working the case.
Mark is sure that Jon is guilty. All the evidence points to him. But, he is immediately impressed with Ann and her determination to see her ex-husband exonerated.
For some reason, Mark just can't shake the impression that Ann is in danger. He also can't shake his intense attraction to her.
As Ann digs into the jazz club's other workers, the musicians, managers and strippers, she uncovers a link to voodoo rituals, another murder and more questions than answers.
I enjoyed the atmosphere in this one and confess to missing Heather Graham's romantic suspense novels. New Orleans is one of my favorite destinations and I love it when a book is set in this location.
Our hero is a bit of a jerk at first. He comes on a little too strong and is a bit bossy.
As the novel progresses, Mark still attempts to steer Ann away from the investigation for her own safety, but the chemistry between the two is undeniable.
I am happy to see several of these older books being released in e book format. It is fun to go back and read an author's older material and see it updated for new fans to enjoy. Over all I give this one a B.

On the first read:

This book is from the 90s but except for things like "cellular phones", as they're referred to, I didn't find it dated. Oh, but I did cringe when I read the un-PC reference .

The plot was exciting and the suspense was written very well. I also like the setting in New Orleans and how that world played into the storyline. Some of the details were pretty interesting.

There were times when the heroine Ann was TSTL, but it was still uncomfortable to hear (yes, the words on the page were so well written that I could practically hear and see what was happening!) the hero Mark calling her stupid, a fool and an idiot, which happened a few times.

Ann and Mark are in their mid to late 40s and they're both emotionally mature as well - something I really enjoy reading and which, sadly, isn't tackled enough in romance. People in this age group can till have hot sex, you know!

On my second read of this book, however, I have noticed a few other weaknesses that I didn't before.

The MCs fall in love practically as soon as they meet - Mark more than Ann.

So many characters have names beginning with the letter 'J'.

Also, I am bothered by how we find out who the killer is.

This book starts off with a bang -- Jon Marcel shows up at his ex-wife Ann's door, covered in blood and saying "I didn't do it." One of the women whose portrait he painted has been murdered. Then, he goes into shock and, eventually, into a coma.

So, we meet detective Mark LaCrosse as he interviews Ann at the hospital .. since Jon is his prime suspect. However, there's another murder while Jon is in the hospital ... and soon murders or attempts thereof seem to dog Ann's footsteps.

Inevitably, inexorably, Mark and Ann get together. However, I didn't feel like there was much chemistry between them. While the author did an admirable job of "show, don't tell," I wasn't buying what she was selling.

Having said that ... it was refreshing to see a romance where the two protagonists are older. Ann is 45 and, while we don't learn Mark's age, we do know that he is a grandfather. So, that was a definite plus.

It was okay for the time...

I feel like this book could have been shorter. Especially for how quickly the ending wrapped up. Everything else was super drawn out but not the killer reveal? Also, the police work described was lazy and unbelievable - there was hardly any real detective work which pissed me off. Plus the characters were all so flat. Anyway, not her best work. I would recommend the Flynn Brothers Series, though, if you want to read something from this same aurhor

4.25. This murder mystery captured my attention from page one. The setting of New Orleans just enhanced this story with the sights, sounds, history, and foods of the Big Easy. The author used such details on the trip to the Bayou. The colorful writing heighten all my senses, as if I was there with Ann.
Ann is loyal to a fault to those she loves. Her best friend is her ex-hubby, which gave this mystery an unique angle to it. The detectives assigned to the case see it as an open and shut case and are just waiting for the suspect, Jon, to come out of his coma. Ann feel propelled to do her own investigation, as she doesn’t believe justice will served. Her novice police work puts her in danger and captures the attention of Lieutenant Mark LaCrosse. She frustrates him, and she isn’t sure if she can trust him. However, neither can denial their sexual chemistry. Things got pretty steamy down in the Bayou!
The secondary cast fit perfectly into the New Orleans scene. There is no shortage of suspects. I had it down to two, and actually guessed correctly before the big reveal. This romantic suspense was on track for 5 Stars, but then the romance part got rushed and too sappy towards the end.

I loved this book until I got to the ending. Talk about out of left field. I like books where the reader can figure out who the bad guy is.

I have read a LOT of Heather Graham books she is somewhat of a favorite of mine but this book....THIS book kept me guessing until almost the very end. "I didn't do it" are the words Ann Marcel hears from her ex husband Jon as he stumbles into her apartment covered in blood. And she has to figure out who DID do it before the police hang her ex husband for murder....she begins looking in a strip club in the "Big Easy" and figuring things out could cost her her very life..... this is a really good book and if you like murder mysteries this one should keep you guessing almost to the very end.

I read this quite awhile ago. It takes place primarily in New Orleans. It is a mystery, gritty and dark and filled with fun and odd characters and one twist after another.

Only gripe? I wanted to do a reread but the price is crazy..it is selling for like 50 bucks. I was a bit baffled by that and still am. Every now and again I check as I'd like to own a hard copy of this book.

Had a problem with the fact that Jon regained consciousness after being in a coma, checked himself out of the hospital a day or two later, then climbed a fence to get into a cemetery. Other than that, pretty good story.

I really enjoyed this mystery! Ann Marcel, an artist who has relocated to New Orleans, finds that her ex-husband, Jon, is suspected of murder and is also on the brink of death himself. Believing John to be innocent, Anne is determined to immerse herself into the seedier aspects of New Orleans and even into the Bayou itself to find the real killer.

I love a mystery that keeps you guessing! This story was fast-paced and chock full of suspects. Since I have been to New Orleans many times, I felt the visualization of the area was very well done. I like that you get to see both the artistic and musical side of this beautiful city, but also get a glimpse into the more risqué nightlife that can be encountered there. The love scenes were steamy, and the suspense was good. I listened to the audiobook version and was not a fan of the narrator. I had a hard time differentiating between the male characters’ voices when only the men were talking. Also, one of the characters, Mark, was born and raised in the bayou area and should have had a distinct Cajun accent. I would highly recommend this book to all mystery lovers.

Down in New Orleans

One of Heather Graham’s earlier works. A stripper/prostitute is murdered. Ann’s ex husband falls through her door, covered in blood whispering “I didn’t do it, I didn’t do it”, then falls into a coma. Ann feels she must help clear her ex husband and searches for answers at Annabelles, an exotic dance club where her ex husband had been doing a series of paintings based on these red light ladies. Detective Mark LaCrosse is investigating the murder, but finds Ann interfering at every turn. As he tries to find answers, the detective and Ann are falling into each other’s arms, but danger lurks by. As Ann gets closer to the red light ladies, she winds up in danger.
New Orleans, voodoo, the swamp and exotic dancers make for a fun read. This is one of her earlier works so the writing isn’t on par to what the writer is today. But still a fun read.

Anne Marcel and her ex-husband Jon are living in New Orleans where they are both artists. Anne specializes in faces, while Jon is working hard on "The Red Ladies" collection which brings him into close association with some of the girls that work in the strip clubs of the city.

While they are divorced, they have a daughter and are friends so when Jon stumbles into Anne's apartment bloody and accused by the police of murder, Anne is one of the few to stand by him and fight to defend him. This brings her into association not only with the particular strip club where Jon met the girls he was painting but with the police. It also ends up getting her involved with the voodoo cults of the area as well.

I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering who the murderer actually was and at various thoughts one of the police investigating might even be the murderer. I found myself surprised at the end at who the murderer actually was.

That's what makes a good mystery, in my opinion.

Algunos personajes demasiado irritantes... En fin, no me la volvería a leer.

Le daré un 3/10 y 2/5. 😔

I had some issues with this book. I liked it don't get me wrong, but 1996 writing was obvious. I don't like how Mark treated Ann half of the time, but in the end, I liked the story enough to keep reading past it.

Ann is out to prove Jon her ex and friend is not a murderer and Mark the cop investigating the case really seems to be out for Jon with what the book called great evidence but really it kinda sucked. The only real evidence they had against Jon was that he was covered in the victim's blood and that the victim was covered in his. Nuh duh they were both stabbed. Either way, the plot thickens considerably when you realize that Mark knew the victim and that there are so many other twists to consider.

I liked how it ended and how Mark finally stops trying to control everything including Ann.

New Orleans

This standalone southern mystery is set in the Crescent City, where a woman has been murdered. The man believed to be her killer left a trail of blood to his ex wife's door before collapsing from his wounds and blood loss. Now in a coma and unable to defend himself from the two police officers assigned to the case, his ex decides to investigate, beginning with the strip club where the dead woman danced.

I've read many historical, paranormal and contemporary books by this author and was looking forward to a new read by her, but was disappointed. This book gets 3.5 stars.

This was a great mystery – kept me guessing until the end! Ann and Jon have the best divorce – they have remained friends while raising their daughter. When Jon shows up with blood all over himself and suffering from stab wounds Ann jumps into action. The police seem to be only looking at Jon as the killer of one of the dancers from the club he is doing an exhibit on. Ann steps in to clear his name and hopefully keep herself safe. Lieutenant Mark seems to be fairly keen on keeping Ann safe but she doesn’t seem to listen! Loved the New Orleans setting – one of my favorite places to visit!

I enjoyed this suspense romance. I love everything Heather Graham writes and this was no exception. I thought I might have read it before but as I got further into it I hadn't.

Jon and Ann Marcel are divorced but best friends. Both artists in New Orleans they share a very unique relationship. Jon has painted a series of pictures from a strip club. On opening night of the showing of his paintings Jon arrives at Ann's door covered in blood and saying he didn't do it.

This story had some very unique twists and turns and the person who did it in the end is not who anyone expected at all.

Down in New Orleans

A very interesting and suspense filled story of murder and mistrust. An artist painting portraits of the dancers/ prostitutes working at a jazz club falls in love with one of them but is soon the number one suspect in her murder. The only one who seems to believe in his innocence is his ex-wife who finds herself uncontrollably attracted to the lead detective on the case who is trying to prove her ex is guilty. What a confusing case and it makes for great reading.

I chose the ratings base on how I couldn't put the book down.
I would recommend this book to people who would like to see what happens to the ladies who work the strip clubs. That they are working moms and dads and
students trying to make a living.

The beginning grabbed my attention with a big scene and charismatic characters. The story moved fast and was entertaining. The ending was predictable, but the reason why and the how was still entertaining to read about. The writing is vivid and I would love to meet the grandmother and see these paintings!

Low 3

This one didn't really work that well for me, but taste is a big factor. It felt scattered for me with the various other POVs. Like it was too many directions and just trying to muddy things. Plenty of action but I also didn't feel the connection to the characters I need to really enjoy a book. Some other small stuff that contributed.

A romance/mystery by Heather Graham with no ghosts...is just not as much fun as her Krewe of Hunters novels. For some time I've been troubled by the new quirk of a large number of villains/ murderers. For the sake of surprise, modern mystery writers are just scrapping realism. However, the novel was readable and engaging.
