My name is Derek Doepker and I am the creator of Excuse Proof Fitness at http://excuseproof.com as well as a fitness author specializing in overcoming everyday challenges to living a healthy lifestyle like limited time, limited budget, limited knowledge, or just plain lack of motivation.
I didn't always used to be an "expert" though. My passion for these things stems from my own struggle years ago living an unhealthy lifestyle and eating fast food every single night. I was addicted to junk food and my body was suffering for it.
I wanted to change, but I had no idea how to overcome years of terrible eating habits and lack of exercise. It didn't help that there were millions of conflicting experts and books out there all saying something different.
After intense research and plenty of hard work, I managed to get in the best shape of my life, and most importantly stay in great shape for the past 9 years.
But it wasn't enough for me to see results, I wanted to help others overcome the same obstacles I had to face like a busy schedule and limited money.
I also noticed many people struggling to get motivated, and this led me into spending years studying everything I could get my hands on when it came to psychology, personal development, and how to "hack" the brain to do what you want it to do. When I discovered that "willpower" is not the answer to making change, it started to make sense why so many people struggled to stay motivated.
Having this knowledge of psychology, plus my special "ninja" strategies I developed over the years for overcoming time and money constraints, I set out to share my knowledge with others so anyone who wanted to get in shape would have the tools and knowledge to do so.

Thank you for making me realize that I will mess up and its OK. I see things clearly now. I wish I could thank you personally. Continue touching people's lives.
"I get lost in the beauty of everything I see. The world ain't half as bad as we paint it to be. If all the sons, all the daughters stopped to take it in. Well then hopefully the hate subsides and the love can begin." - Come Home
I really enjoyed this book. I just quit my job recently to start my own business. It's a bit scary but more than anything, it's exciting. Reading this gave me even more motivation to succeed in my business as well as ideas for actions to take too make my business successful. Definitely recommend!
Really a 3.5. This book confirms all that you know about moving forward with edition of Mindfulness. It also dives in paradoxical statements that a person should embrace instead of believing it is one or the other.
The first 50ish percent is decent, but the use of the same situations over and over is boring and redundant. Several editing and grammatical errors, seems to lose train of thought mid paragraph. Some useful quotes and information gleaned from Tony Robin's and other self help gurus. I started it in 2014, and started it over again to finish what I started. I'm so thankful I trudged thru till the end, but mostly just skim/scrolled because the writing was so annoying by that point. Would not recommend, just read Tony Robins.
Aside from some editing issues, this book was great, filled with practical information that you could start applying immediately. I loved Doepker's style of writing. I do plan to read some of his other books.
If you follow his advice, it will certainly help you get unstuck from anything that's holding you back.
I'm either hopelessly stuck or am just not the self-help book type. On a positive note, this freebie saved me the expense of paying a ridiculously perky new age-y life coach, only to learn I find them intensely annoying. I don't want to sit down with Maslow's hierarchy and analyze my motivations for everything I do, even if it means I am in the grip of social media (I telecommute--it's my only link to the outside world). I may be floundering, but m not "let me imagine myself five years in the future so I can ask myself for advice as I look back on my situation" floundering.
Maybe if I hadn't seen that episode of Family Guy where Brian writes his book ("Wish It, Want It, Do It," or some such silliness...) because I kept hearing Bill Maher making crap of me as I tried to read this.
I enjoyed this thoughtful little book about feeling stuck. The author suggests that feeling stuck is not necessarily a bad thing but is a place to begin reflecting on what is causing the feeling and what you need to move ahead. He gives many good suggestions for how to dig deeper into yourself to discover the answers for how to change your life and find greater fulfillment. I feel it is well worth a read if you are feeling stuck.
I gave this book 4 stars rather than 5 simply because there are quite a number of typos, errors and omissions. It is surprising with a book of this quality and is an unfortunate mark against it.
In full disclosure, this audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com.
Overall, the book is pretty good. There's nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary to set it apart from the thousands of other self-help books out there. However, if you were to only read one self-help book this year you could do a lot worse than this. It was enjoyable and kept my interest throughout.
The narrator for this title was OK. He came off sounding like that "wise" older brother or uncle we all have who wants to impart their life's lessons onto us. He was fine for the material.
You can't effectively solve a problem if you're only treating the symptoms. On the contrary, you need to dig deep until you find the root of the problem. That's exactly what the author teaches the reader to do. Sure, he could tell us to think happy thoughts and stay positive, but unless we know what's motivating our behavior, we won't be able to sustain that mindset, thus falling into the same pattern, over and over again. Mainly, Doepker explains the basic needs all humans seek, how we meet those needs (both healthily and destructively) and the right way to go about achieving them.
This is a very practical book on how to change your situation. I enjoyed that this book doesn't give you the tools to "get out" of any particular rut, but it gives you the power to change how you see your circumstances. The greatest tool you have is your mind and you are never actually stuck. This book helped me to see that and was an easy read. I'm glad I took the time to read it. If you take it seriously there is a lot of self exploration. This is not the kind of book you want to pass up if you feel stuck in any way.
I found myself writing down, quoting and rereading sections because of the valuable information. I have read a lot of self-help books but Doepker does a great job of saying things a little bit different than everyone else. If you are someone who has a block, this is a great book to help get past it.
