Danny Did a Fluffy

Rate this book
A dizzying and disgusting tale of sibling rivalry gone wrong. Grunge lit for the YouTube generation - a must-listen short story for fans of Irvine Welsh and Chuck Palahniuk.

Kevin and Danny Sandalford were just two kids leading a normal suburban existence on the outskirts of Sydney, until a chance viral video changed their lives forever.

Desperate to cash in on their 15 minutes of fame, the Sandalford bros get caught up in the dark underbelly of showbusiness. They fall head-first into a gluttonous lifestyle filled to the brim with sex and drugs, until a femme fatale divides their loyalties, setting off a public showdown of epic proportions.

In the pursuit of relevance, sacrifices need to be made. What depraved depths will the brothers sink to?

Hedonistic and nihilistic little tale for the Youtube generation. Good narration on the audiobook.

Since the author released the narrated version to his YouTube channel, I decided to give it a swing. I found this story to be an interesting one because in many ways it subtly comments on fame and it's repercussions. One theme I especially liked was Waite's modern grounding of this book and his other one 'Any Day You Can Die'. I think he handles narratives set in the modern world fairly well because his style very much compliments the substance.

On face value, because this is a short story it is fairly simplistic. However, I find it perfectly balances the equation between being an entertaining read and maintaining worthy concepts of contemplation once finishing the piece. I do believe Waite is onto something here; in effect, so far, he has written two social commentaries ('Danny did a Fluffy' and 'Any Day You Can Die') on the society we shamefully live under.

Thommy Waite has many valuable insights that seep into both of his works and interviews (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9K_Z... ) ;) - I certainly look forward to reading more of his books in the future.

PS: His narration skills are fucking top notch, absolutely awesome. I recommend listening to this particular piece.

What it means to be famous has changed several times during this young century. Thommy Waite's Danny Did A Fluffy captures these changes astutely by portraying the fate of two immature brothers. Using colloquial language and colourful wordplays, the narrator lets the reader (or listener) experience internet stardom as closely as such an experience may be recommendable.

A modern tale for modern times! Consequentially, disgust is guaranteed.

Quick novella around 34 pages or an hour long audiobook recording
Two brothers become overnight viral sensations as children and struggle with retaining identity and cultural relevance coming into their adulthood. They spiral down a path of exploitation and drug abuse when an agent gets involved—stoking the fire that is their ongoing rivalry.
A dissection and chronicle of the birth of content creation and the downfall of the collective attention span through the increase need for instant gratification from attention seeking behavior.
Shows the lengths one will debase themself to achieve this.
Hilarious analogies that roll off the tongue effortlessly
Clean precise language that is very direct and written to reflect the dialect
Realized situations full of nuance that feel lived
Horrific violent ending that was shocking, satisfying, and felt thematically conclusive
The final lines gave me full body chills.
I recommend both reading this and listening to the audiobook which is performed by Thommy. His performance is stellar. It delivers on every comedic beat and sells a sort of neutrality and commonplace attitude the central character has to the world around him.
Would love to read a collection of these stories and can’t wait to read Any Day You Can Die
