The Blue Amaryllis
Upon the death of her mother, 26 year old Leia York is left bereft and grief-stricken. An old college professor extends her an invitation to join him in one of the most beautiful, yet most dangerous, places on earth - the Amazon rainforest. 4 Life Affirming Stars * * * *
Have you ever sat and thought about the past? I am not talking about when you were small or about generations ago... I am talking about the real long ago past... times when there were no mechanical tools; no stores to buy things or towns and cities... Yes, the times when the focus of life was a tribe... they took care of each other and this was a way of life which was universal. That type of past did exist and it happened all over the globe...but "progress" happened in many forms, destroying this way of life.... or... did it?
There are places where life exists this way and one of them is deep in the Amazon. There the lifeline of rivers, forests and the real circle of life continues. This is life of beauty, "sweet and the sour" and people who understand the ways of this world. This book addresses the question of a Western woman coming and discovering more about herself than the medicinal plants she came to study.
Leia is not your typical Chicagoan. She was raised by her mother with the strong sense of what should happen between a man and a woman... she was taught to save herself for the "real one", not give it away in the moments which can happen. As Leia grows and attends college, she sees her boyfriends become frustrated and blame her because she is willing to wait for when she has a husband. She focuses on her interests in her Native American heritage, studying the elders ways; learning all about plant medicines and becoming a midwife. Through her studies she meets her mentor, a man who has a project with some of the Amazonian tribes; he invites her to come and join him. At the time of the offer, Leia puts it off to take care of her mother, as she is fighting cancer. Leia is determined to see if she can do anything to help her mom. Unfortunately, her mother succumbs and passes leaving Leia alone and feeling as if she failed.
Nothing can break through her grief. She decides to take a break and escape from her life... and goes to the Amazon to learn more natural medicine with her mentor. It will be hard. Luckily Leia is a runner and has the physical and mental strength needed for this adventure. The Amazon is one of the most dangerous places... if the forest and animals aren't frightening enough.... there are tribes which will kill first and then ask questions later. But these facts do not seem to deter Leia... she hears a calling and we go with her. Leia becomes immersed with The Matis tribe and there is not only the teacher she knows there... but Tanun, a tribesman, who has learned English. He is their medicine man and happens to connect deeply with Leia. The romance develops but tribal law prohibits mixing with others... if a coupling happens... then the tribesman will be banished from all he knows...Leia knows this would wrong and fights her feelings for this man....
What we experience with Leia is an eye opening tale about many universal concepts...it is clear there is a feel throughout this reading of making us think... ponder what is important in the grand scheme of things. We take so much for granted... and yet if we reduced everything down to our basic needs... what do we really need to be happy...
This was a very beautiful story and there were moments of deep feelings; loss of loved ones and how retching that can feel, joyous affection for another and the thrills and excitement of learning about the Amazon. It also gave a sense of what the Native Americans endured with outsiders taking over their native land and stripping away their food sources. This is not just a love story... it is a calling to us to pay attention to what is happening in the Amazon... the native people are fighting to hold on and this can give us a push to see them not fade away.

My Leia and Tanun:
"This story seeks to shed light on a way of life no longer lived in many parts of the earth; a way of life that is being threatened even today. And what is life without a little bit of love?"
This book shows us that true love knows no boundaries.
It shows us that it is more than worth it to slowly discover what true passion is.
And most importantly, this book shows us how to find joy and hapiness in the simplest everyday things.
The Blue Amaryllis is beautifully crafted story following life-changing adventure of young woman who finds her true self in the middle of Amazon rainforest. I was truly impressed with this debut novel and I am glad I could experience Leia's and Tanun's beautiful journey alongside them!
When it comes to romance in the books, I like it unconventional. I like it unique and original. Modern woman falling for native man while discovering greatness of simple life among Amazon tribes definitely fits this criteria. I was fascinated by the premise from early pages and my love for this book and characters only grew as the story progressed.
But what kind of romance story it would be without a dose of complications? In Matis tribe, mating between native person and outsider is strictly forbidden. It was bittersweet to watch Leia struggling with her feelings towards Tanun. What will prevail? Selfish love when Leia can have Tanun all for herself? Or selfless love when Tanun can stay with his people where he is needed the most?
Tanun was such an untraditional character, yet I couldn't help but fall head over heels in love with him. He won me over with his kindness. I was mesmerized by his playful persona. His generosity and honesty astounded me. Tanun is definitely kind of character I will always remember and this book is worth of reading just so you can meet him.
And one last observation. Even though this book has some signs of so called insta-love, it never bothered me. It wasn't some juvenile irrational crush and events that Leia had to go through, immediatelly and irrevocably changed her, making her quick connection to Tanun quite believable in my eyes. So do not hesitate to give this book a chance!

Somewhere in South America, deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, are isolated tribes...
There is a road in the hearts of all of us, hidden and seldom traveled, which leads to an unknown secret place. ~ Ote Kte.
The Blue Amaryllis is not like any book you have probably read previously, and it is unlikely that you will ever read a book the will emulate it in the future. It is a one of a kind story, that takes the reader out of the twenty-first century, and drops them smack-bang in the middle of a world, where life, love and survival are all that is important.
Your imagination will take a journey, and you will get lost in the colour and vivacity of the Amazon rain forest. You will read things in this book, that you are never likely to read of again, and you will learn about things that you probably never knew existed, especially in the technology-rich world that we live in today.
It was as if she had actually travelled in time, stepped back into an existence that she had not known was possible, and in doing the impossible, she had found and extraordinary love.
It is hard to put The Blue Amaryllis into a specific genre, although it does say on the cover it is a 'Love Story', which is true, I also feel that it is much more than that, its a journey, a discovery, a revelation and a chance to learn about love in a completely different medium. There is an innocence to the love that grows between Leia and Tanun, but it feels right, I wanted them to take their time, I didn't want them jumping straight to sex, it wouldn't have been the right way to go for either the story or their characters. It builds, and grows along with the books progression, and is all the more beautiful for it.
She loved looking at him. It created an ache in her heart. The physical response she felt was something she had never experienced before.
The strength of their bond is built on the experiences they have together, basic actions and the simplest of gestures are magnified due to the extreme circumstances Leia finds herself in, and for me Tanun with his open heart, and lack of fear for his expression of feelings, was the perfect balance for Leia, who has travelled to the Amazon with a heavy heart, and more questions about herself than answers.
Looking at her made him want so much. He didn't know what it meant. He wanted to be near her., he wanted to look at her, he wanted to be a better hunter, he wanted to make her smile and laugh.
There is alot of action and adventure through the story as well, things happen in this book that I never imagined possible, it is refreshing, there is so much going on around and running through Leia's journey that it is impossible to get bored. Sonia De Leon has managed to weave together a complex and visual story, her descriptions and explanations of everything as the book progress are not overdone, but at the same time contain such clarity it is almost as if you have stepped into the colourful pages of a National Geographic magazine. What with the actual setting, the indigenous people, as well as the flora and fauna that Leia comes into contact with you really do get absorbed into a completely different world.
It was a peaceful, uncomplicated life that really struck a chord in Leia's bones. She deeply admired the simplicity of it all.
I had the honor of beta-reading this book, and it was pretty impressive in its raw form, I am not one to ass-kiss, and if I don't like something I am happy to give a constructive opinion (and believe me I did). I could wax lyrical about The Blue Amaryllis, and probably double the length of this review, but ultimately what I want to do is inspire people to read the book. I went on a very personal journey when I read the book the first time, it was just as emotional, and thought-provoking the second time around. I don't have much time to re-read books nowadays, but this is a book I would happily drop everything for again and again to read, I just love it that much.
"You are not alone, Leia. I am not alone. Do you feel me here with you?"
"No matter how far you go, I will keep loving you. The roots of my heart will always wrap with yours."
If you have taken the chance and read my review, I hope you will take the chance and purchase, then read the book. This is a once in a lifetime kinda story, I don't think it is ever likely to be replicated or bettered.

What defines a seasoned writer? Several things, but I'll just point out one. In this instance, it's taking a subject, setting, or situation that a reader doesn't like, and being able to compel her to read anyway. This is what Sonia De Leon did with The Blue Amaryllis. I'll be honest, anything dealing with jungles, the Amazon, or just indigenous settings in general, will either have me running for the hills, or bored beyond reason, however such was not the case with this book.
I was intrigued from the start and it didn't hurt that De Leon's hero was yumalicious. That's the key. If you create an unforgettable hero, a reader will stay on for the ride. Tanun was as real to me as a flesh and blood man. Intelligent, layered, and gorgeous, he had a quiet strength about him, a nobility he wore like a crown. It wasn't overt or anything. It was just a vibe he gave off. A regalness that captured my imagination.
He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, you listened because there was much more going on than what was on the surface. IOW, this guy was deep.
Leia, the heroine was the ultimate fish out of water. A westerner thrust in a jungle situation, having to learn quickly in order not only to fit in with the surroundings, but in some cases, to survive. And this is where she shined. The woman was intelligent, sympathetic and real. Not a paper doll. She rose to every challenge with finesse and grace. You couldn't help but root for her.
The romance had a sweet, yet tastefully passionate and realistic feel to it. The author allowed the H/h time to get to know each other, so that when love declarations were made, the reader could nod and say, "Yeah, I can see why they love each other."
Oftentimes, I've encountered books where I'm left scratching my head, and saying "When the heck did that happen?" In this case, it was obvious when and how. Theirs was a love story in the truest sense of the words.
Overall, the setting was lush. So much so, that while reading this book, I felt as if I were watching a feature film. You're immersed in the richness of the native culture.
The food, ceremonial dances, and day to day village life come alive through De Leon's descriptive prose, which is to die for, BTW. The lady can write. In fact, her style reminded me a lot of Diana Gabaldon (one of my favorite authors).
I highly recommend this book.

The Blue Amaryllis is beautiful journey of overcoming obstacles in the quest for true unconditional love.
Midwife and herbalist Leia hails from Chicago. Raised by her mother, she was brought up on the belief that intimacy between man and woman should be saved for marriage - something the men she has been with don't understand. When her mother passes away, Leia is grief-stricken and leaves Chicago behind for the Amazon to study tribal medicine with her mentor from her university days. It is there she meets Tanun, an English speaking member of the Matis tribe who is also a skilled medicine man. Their attraction and connection is deep, but the Matis only marry within the tribe and a union between tribesman and Western-woman is forbidden.
And so begins a story of forbidden love. There are no detailed sexual acts but the build-up and the depth of the feelings between Leia and Tanun holds the story throughout. Granted I found the start a little steady going, but when the story takes hold it is filled with emotion, detail, shocks and lovely fun moments as our couple find their way. Both are wonderful characters and Leia is a strong determined selfless woman. Tanun is a man of few words, but when he does speak he holds you captivated. The descriptively beautiful setting simply adds to the reading experience. Time ceased to exist whilst I read this book.
The surprising element is that underneath the romance, The Blue Amaryllis makes you think. Whilst sitting on my sofa, typing my review up on my laptop, having just finished reading this on my Kindle, with my iPhone and a cup of coffee made from my machine on the table next to me, there are tribes, not only in the Amazon but around the world, hunting, gathering and expressing themselves through living in a close community. Their lives are rich without the gadgets we so rely on, yet they face hardship caused by modern society and this made this novel thought-provoking, unique, special and one that will stay with me for a long time to come.
"When you feel the sun warm on your skin, that is me, loving you. Even when I turn to dust, I will still be up there, loving you from a river of stars".
Can soul-mates find a way to be together? I highly recommend reading this and discovering everything wonderful that Sonia De Leon has created for yourself. 4.5 stars.

I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review.
I have to tell you I really enjoyed this book! It was so interesting I found it hard to put the book down in order to get anything else accomplished. Usually I can pull myself away from a book for a little break but there was no putting this one down for anything.
I would definitely recommend that you give this book a read. It is certainly worth the time. You will love it as much as I did, I am sure of it.
I have to tell you I really enjoyed this book! It was so interesting I found it hard to put the book down in order to get anything else accomplished. Usually I can pull myself away from a book for a little break but there was no putting this one down for anything.
I would definitely recommend that you give this book a read. It is certainly worth the time. You will love it as much as I did, I am sure of it.

Loved it! I am always excited when I learn something factual while reading fiction. The blue amaryllis lured me in with a love story made me care for the safety and protection of the tribal families living in the Amazon. Many of us long for a simpler time and a life more connected to nature. This is the way of life for the people of the Amazon and it may not be that way for long if we allow the destruction of the rain forest to continue. I look forward to more from Sonia De Leon!

I loooooved this book! The story is about overcoming grief and finding that person you're supposed to be with. Leah is every one of us, it's not hard to relate to her situation. The trials they go through and the knowledge of content is clear and impressive. The narration paints a clear picture through the whole book. What a beautiful story! Great job!

Leia is looking for a change of pace from Chicago, and boy does she get it when she travels to the wild jungles of the Amazon to join her professor on an anthropological expedition. She is to assist him in cataloging healing plants that the natives use. This should keep her busy, and her mind quiet.
When she arrives, red faced, sweaty and muddy, she meets Tanun, the tribe’s medicine man, a bronzed heathen Adonis come to life! *Fans myself* He is the most gorgeous man she has ever lain her eyes on. With him being a medicine man, she could learn a lot from him.
Leia respects everyone in the tribe for their way of life and unassuming joy. She tries to fit in, participates in the rituals, but she isn’t quite ready to shed her clothing yet.
“Just another day of bathing with nude muscular hunters in the Amazon rainforest.”
Leia, and Tanun are selected, among others, to journey into the Peruvian Amazon, to bring back seeds from the blue amaryllis. This adventure ties them closer together, but there is one problem… Their love for each other is strictly forbidden by the Matis tribe.
It didn’t take me long to get wrapped up in the world of The Blue Amaryllis. For starters, the world building was INCREDIBLE, and the setting of an Amazon Rainforest for a romance was a wise pick. I learned a lot about the indigenous tribes, and their way of life. This story sheds a lot of light on a way of life that is no longer lived in many parts of the world.
Secondly, what I especially liked about this novel, was the “star crossed lovers” twist to their slow burning romance. Leia is a white woman from Chicago, and Tanun is a Matis, native to the wild jungles of the Amazon. Their worlds never should have crossed, and yet they did.

Ladies, if you are looking for a new “book boyfriend”, Tanun is your man! He is tall, strong, muscular, has long gorgeous hair, and he walks around naked all day, lol!

The Blue Amaryllis a Love Story by Sonia De Leon
The title it’s self would normally cause me to by-pass this book without a second thought. “A Love Story”, no thanks. Yes I’m a guy and I’m not against love or love stories but my reading habits do not include romance novels. I’m more a Sci fi: Arthur C Clarke. Fantasy: Tolkien, Drama: McCarthy and just a good boring book on record collecting or wood working kind of guy. A Relative handed me the book and told me what a great read it was. After I read the title I handed it back to her but she insisted I would enjoy the story. She told me that it was not only about two people falling in love, Leia from Chicago and Tanun from the Amazon jungle but also about an Amazonian tribe and how they live their day to day lives and how Leia slowly became acclimated to their simple way of life. Well that seemed interesting enough so I took the book and agreed to read it.
I have to admit she was right. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and its treatment of how two totally different people can fall so deeply in love. I’ll admit there are many part where the two, Leia and Tanun where experiencing a great bond of emotion and love, and though I didn’t get all swoony over those parts as I imagined some of the other readers were, they were written with great skill and tenderness. I believe the author was just reliving similar scenes from her own life.
Over all I really liked the book it flowed nicely and always kept my interest in what was on the next page. I especially liked the information on the Matis (the tribe Leia is staying with, in the Amazon) and their day to day lives how they hunt for food, how as a community sheared in the work to the benefit of all. The respect they have for each other and for the earth. When gathering food never taking more then they needed leaving behind animals or plants to provide for future needs. The story goes beyond the area that is home to the Matis tribe and we go on a exploration of the Amazon with Leia seeing things through her Western eyes and see firsthand the beauty and difficulties that come with living in that part of the world. This story makes me want to book the next flight to Brazil.
I’m not going to get any more into the story. Lots of reviews have done so already and I think it’s best to discover this world yourself, page by page. I really liked the book and highly recommend it to all reader. I must say I have not been won over to the romance novel. Still I will be looking forward to the next one by Sonia De Leon.

Leia York is a young herbalist and certified midwife who is in mourning for her mother. Her work lacks its previous satisfaction since her mothers’ cancer could not be cured by Leias’ natural remedies nor by conventional medicine. The story is multifaceted. It's an adventure, a romance, and an exploration of environmental justice. We see both here and abroad the victims of injustice. Those who don't hold the political, economic, and social clout tend to feel the cold edge of that injustice.
This is a standalone book, and not part of the series. That knowledge is bittersweet, since the reader wants to know what happens next. In the words of Ms. De Leon:
"The big question: Will I write another book about these people? For now, the answer is no. The struggles they face are real and hold detriment to their future. I feel that if I were to write a fictional account about what could happen, I would be, in essence, mocking the real outcome, whatever it may be. My hope is that this fictional account of real events, will shine some light on the issues taking place in the Amazon. Maybe if we all care enough, our voices can make a difference for them."

I loved The Blue Amaryllis. It was one of those novels that you want to savor, because it's so great and it transports you into completely different setting, unique way of life, memorable characters. I fell in love with the story and with the writing. It's sensual and so romantic. The attraction between the main characters really makes you feel every second of their tension. It leaves you wondering about the end and how they're going to resolve their differences to be together; and the end doesn't disappoint. It is everything a romance novel should be.

Delightful

2.5 stars, altogether.
I found the story of the Amazonian Matis people interesting, and that- and only that- is what kept me reading. The element of leaving the modern world behind and living with an Indigenous tribe, learning how to live off the land and coming to love its people, was all really good (and admittedly a secret fantasy of mine lol). And the writing was pretty decent, aside from the awkward head-hopping now and then. I liked Tanun, but I found Leia extremely tedious and frustrating. For one, she had that whole story line of being a 26-year-old virgin waiting for the right man for marriage, which obviously made her so much better than everyone who chooses to have premarital sex. I don't have anything against a virgin per se, but the author was pretty sanctimonious about it, which became downright annoying real fast. Oh, and did Leia mention how much she loves Tanun but they can't possibly be together because of tribal law, and how much it kills her inside? Because she mentions it about fifty thousand times throughout the book. But although their love is Special, Effervescent, Written in the Stars, etc., etc., could they be bothered to communicate about their intentions and predisposed assumptions, even once? No, of course not. That would have been too easy and bad for drama. And that's the extent of the plot. The Matis culture and customs, and the beautiful Amazon adventure, is this book's saving grace. I did find the characters (aside from Leia) mostly likeable, so kudos to the author for that.

The Ultimate in Forbidden Love
Brief synopsis: When we first meet Leia York, she is depressed and alone, mourning the loss of her mother to cancer. She's never had a real relationship and has no shoulder to cry on. Fortunately, she receives an invitation from a former professor to come to the Amazon and assist him with gathering and studying various plants that may have medicinal purposes. With nothing to lose, Leia sets off on the adventure of her life. After a long journey deep into the Amazon, she finally reaches the Matis village. At first, she is awkwardly shy about the native dress (strings of beads only) and I had to laugh when she first sees her professor, James, completely naked along with the rest of the Matis tribe. One of the first people in the tribe she meets is Tanun because she falls unconscious at his feet. If she had only know the foreshadowing... It doesn't take long for Leia to forget about the high-pressure rat race she came from and she settles in to the Matis tribe, learning there ways and also learning to love them. One, far more than others... unfortunately, Matis must keep their bloodlines poor and a girl with green eyes from Chicago will never suit the tribe.
Characters: The author did a beautiful job creating characters that are believable and interesting. I absolutely fell in love with Tanun and the rest of his tribe for their sheer simplicity and how happy they were in their lives. They care for each other as a village, not as the "Smith and Jones who has the nicest house and car" syndrome. What I would give to live like them! Tanun is gorgeous and primitive, but smart and a healer and he falls for Leia every bit as much as she falls for him. If he would have only told her his secret from the beginning! Leia is so fun to grow with as the story moves along from her embarrassment of being naked all the time to a point where she actually participates in their painful rituals in order to fit in and try to become one of them - all out of love. I thought the author also did a great job with the dialogue because obviously, they didn't speak the same language, but it had great flow and never became distracting.
Originality: This one gets 5 stars for originality for sure. The story was so much more than a romance novel. It intertwined the serious and very real situation the natives in the Amazon are facing and hopefully brings to attention their need for help. You can't help but want to go there and help these people to continue their beautiful way of life. The author says at one point that it is like traveling back in time and that is true. Would we destroy our Indians in America now if we had the chance to do it over?
Recommendations: This one has to go with barbecued tapir, one of Leia's favorite dishes from the Amazon. Sorry, but it can't very well go with fine wine and a steak now can it? I highly recommend this story not only to romance readers, but to anyone who loves rich history, stories with a strong purpose, being lost in a lush tropical rain forest or simply getting away from the rat race.

Leia York, grief-stricken after the death of her mother, takes time out from her busy, unsatisfying life to visit a friend, deep in the heart of the Amazon rain-forest. Far away from civilization, the native tribe whom James abides with, live a simple, uncomplicated life, at one with nature and each other. Leia finds herself falling in love with the people and the land more each day. She longs for the peace they share and slowly, begins to discard the trappings of her old life in the dog eat dog westernized world. Somewhere along her journey, Leia finds herself deeply in love with Matis warrior Tanun. The love they share transcends the physical, but the Matis people have strict rules that forbid their own to marry outside of the tribe. Is Leia strong enough to leave her warrior for love?
Once you’ve read as many books as I have, there are very few stories that have truly unique subject matter, but I can honestly say this novel is unlike any I’ve ever read. At the heart of it, this is a love story, but the setting is utterly captivating, adding a richness that is sorely lacking in most modern day romances. The characters, especially Tanun, are beautiful in their honest simplicity. The author has managed to capture the intensity of deep, internal emotions, without resorting to the usual antics of physical desire, and yet there is still passion to motivate and move forward.
I think the reason I love this book so much is because it is something I’ve often thought about myself. Life in this technological century is often hard and stressful. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s dreamed about dropping out of the rat race and ‘going back to the roots’, where family time and nature were more important than money and possessions.
So if you haven’t ready this one yet, be prepared - it will force you to reevaluate your own priorities in life. Any book that forces me to think is a golden bar in my eyes!

I like Leia's strength, though she's not aware of it. Ms De Leon has written a relatable heroine with faults and weaknesses that she's well aware of, but who has the strength and determination to become part of a people who are so different to her own.
Tanun is equally complex - a man who is part alpha-male hero, but also a caring man who has respect for everyone around him. He'd kill without hesitation for the woman he loves, but take his hands off her if she expresses even the slightest hesitation in being close to him.
It's no surprise that the two become close - while worlds apart in culture, they are very well-suited in temperament.
This story was poignant; even heartbreaking at times. When cultural differences can keep two people apart, despite their soul-wrenching love for one another, it's enough to drive me to tears.

Ehhhhh I don't understand all of these amazing reviews !! At first I loved the premise and really felt like I may connect to the characters but in the end the story is not good. Now I will say I disliked Leia from the start as I am more of the strong empowered women supporter vs. the wilting flower that needs a man to bloom so that coupled her desire to wait until marriage to have sex with a man because her dead mom told her so was sooo over done! (Why does everyone love virgins!?!)
What really got me honestly was our heroine; it's hard to jump into a love story with a leading lady you dislike - and for that honestly i skimmed the sex scene which took literally 419 pages to reach, it had no fire, the characters didn't make each other better and Leia just blindly accepted almost everything anyone asked her to do with no questions. An absolute joy to read. A beautifully written story of forbidden love. Leia, the heroine,left her home of Chicago after dealing with the loss of her mother only to enter one of the most dangerous places in the world, the Amazon forest. Leia is a well-educated, smart, and beautiful woman. She was invited by her old college professor to offer her expertise as a midwife and herbalist and to study tribal medicine.
Tanun, the hero of this story, is a beautifully sculpted, gorgeous man with few words. He is the medicine man for the Matis tribe who quickly catches Leia's eye. After having to spend six weeks in close quarters, Tanun and Leia's feelings for one another grow into something that changes the rest of their lives.
This story is so much more than a love story. It is a journey between two people and the cultural differences that they must abide by. It is filled with fiction and non-fiction elements that kept me yearning to read more. I would highly recommend this wonderful read to anyone. Great job!

I loved this story! Well written and beautifully detailed, every aspect of this plot came to life for me. Sonia De Leon wove a great deal of fact in with fiction, effectively highlighting the plight of the Amazon tribes and the decimation of the rainforest. At the very heart of the story are Leia and Tanun.
Bruised and disillusioned by love and life, Leia leaves the bustling streets of Chicago to join her mentor, James, in the Amazon rainforest to study the medicinal properties of the plants and flowers there. The last thing she expects to find is love. The simplicity and purity of the tribal people capture her heart - especially Tanun, the medicine man.
As they experience a myriad of life situations, some endearing, some dangerous, Tanun's medicine heals not only her physical wounds, but her emotional ones as well. But tribal laws strictly forbid unions with outsiders, and that's something no amount of medicine can overcome. Could a secret from the past be the ultimate solution?

I read this book in one day. I so appreciated the different customs and learning about the various cultures of the tribes. Some were quite shocking and I was like, "Wait, what did they do?"
Honestly, when I picked this book up I had no idea what to expect. I was in for a pleasant surprise. First of all, I truly enjoyed the author's writing. And I loved how the author was able to show the readers what is happening currently in Amazon through her fictional characters.
Yes, ultimately it was a Romance. But I've always been a sucker for a good love story. The author was able to develop her characters nicely. There were times when I found myself laughing because both of the main characters were trying to understand the other's customs. It was endearing.
Bravo for such an amazing story! Looking forward to more work from this author.

Sonia,I totally enjoyed The Blue Amaryllis. I could not stop reading it & when I had to, I'd hurry up to do what I had to do just to get back to it. I enjoyed learning more about the tribes & there situation that there going threw, it's sad. There way of life is what I hope to live in the future. I found myself being part of the book, running, jumping, falling in love(LOL). I have to admit I really believed Tanun was real,til the end. The respect & love Tanun has for Leia in the book is the kind that I believe we all would like to have. I hope to be able to read more of your books in the future.

This novel was awesome! I absolutely couldn’t put it down. I appreciated all the hours of research which must have gone into the description, in order to depict the Amazonian tribes with such clarity and insight. It is a beautiful love story and the character of Tanun is someone we all want to meet. Living in Oceania and watching the dreadful prejudice against indigenous people here, I empathise with the plight of the tribes and it touched me deeply. It’s rare for a novel to make me cry in places but the tenderness and pure innocence of The Blue Amaryllis did exactly that. If you love romance and want to visit somewhere new, I would definitely recommend this novel.

This is a tough book to review as I don’t want to shy anyone away from reading it, but I don’t know that I would push someone to read it. The writing was fantastic. The story was heartfelt and beautiful. The main characters were both complex and like-able, but, with all of that said, I just didn’t connect with the story. I honestly believe the fault is mine as a reader not a direct reflection of the book or the author’s writing as they were both superb. Keep in mind, I finished it in 2 days.

I stayed up too late several nights not being able to put this book down. True, The Blue Amaryllis is a love story but not just between humans. The most moving part for me was the love of the land and the honor, culture and traditions of the Amazon Rainforest tribes. A poignant fiction story based on current non-fiction ecological conditions took me to a place of simplicity and beauty I can only imagine in my mind's eye. Ms. De Leon truly portrayed the respect these people have for the Earth and how to live in harmony. Well done.
