In spite of the mounting evidence, Frankel's bride-to-be, Rachel Grant, and her father, Austin Grant, formerly a detective at Scotland Yard in London, are certain of Frankel's innocence. But with the police under orders to use whatever force necessary to stop a so-called dangerous criminal, the duo will have to act fast to save him. The relentless chase after Frankel takes them across the country, from the tropical shores of Hawaii to a deadly rendezvous in northern Maine. Three dead bodies. An impending wedding. A man on the run trying to prove his innocence along with the help of his fiancée and future father-in-law.

In this sequel to The Last Commandment, Shepherd continues the saga of Rachel Grant and John Frankel. This book was thrilling and incredibly hard to put down (read it in a day) with plenty of twists and turns. I particularly enjoyed how each individual approached the problem of proving John’s innocence in a slightly different manner, but came together to help each other put the puzzle together. While this is the second book in the series, I accidentally read it first and it didn’t have any major spoilers in it. Thoroughly enjoyed the read and will now go back and read the first book, The Last Commandment! Rating of 4.5 stars.

The second book in the Austin Grant Scotland Yard series, Should I Fall by Scott Shepherd begins six months after the previous story. Having not read the first adventure, this was a standalone read that doesn’t require any knowledge of previous events. Now retired, former Commander Austin Grant is once again travelling to New York on the eve of his daughter’s wedding. This time, Austin is out to prove his soon to be son in law’s innocence, given the discovery of his ex-wife’s body. As the police build their case, Austin and his daughter Rachel race against time to solve the murder and make it back home in time for the wedding. Criss crossing America and even a trip to Hawaii, the body count mounts as the mystery deepens. With building tension, enjoyable characters and intriguing murder mystery comes this three and a half star rated novel. The ending was disappointingly somewhat saccharine, which detracted from the overall complex murder plot. With thanks to Penzler Publishers and the author, for an uncorrected advanced reader copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.

Last summer, veteran television writer, producer and showrunner Scott Shepherd treated us to his first mystery novel, THE LAST COMMANDMENT, and it was an absolute winner. Even more importantly, he introduced us to a set of characters from both sides of the pond --- New York City and London --- that he has reassembled for his sophomore effort, SHOULD I FALL.

While the previous book featured a clever and brutal serial killer that NYPD Detective John Frankel and Scotland Yard Inspector Austin Grant were simultaneously tracking, this sequel is far more personal. It deals with secrets in Frankel’s past that threaten not only his career, but also his upcoming nuptials to Grant’s daughter, Rachel.

Right on the heels of Rachel penning the successful “The Last Commandment” article for Vanity Fair, which described the exploits contained in the earlier book, Frankel popped the question to her and she accepted. However, their wedding is put in serious jeopardy when Rachel enters Frankel’s apartment to find his ex-wife, Julia, dead on the floor with a bullet wound in her chest. Frankel is nowhere to be found.

Rachel’s first call is to her now-retired father, who catches the first flight over from London to New York. Upon his arrival, they receive word that Frankel has been apprehended and is being held for suspicion of first-degree murder. As far as everyone knows, Julia lived in Hawaii and was seeing a man by the name of Pablo Suarez for several years. They also are aware that Frankel had been enjoying a bachelor’s weekend with a friend in Wisconsin. His work weapon was not fired, but his backup piece has not been accounted for.

Following the initial interrogation, a big piece of information comes out that could change everything. It turns out that Frankel had gone to Hawaii, not Wisconsin. Rachel wonders what in the world would make him fly there, especially with Julia in the Big Apple. Frankel remains tight-lipped about this, even though he maintains his innocence when it comes to Julia’s murder and promises to come clean about everything when the time is right. Rachel begins to wonder if she can marry a man who is capable of keeping such secrets from her.

The focus then shifts to the mysterious Pablo, who has since gone missing in Hawaii. Because he must remain in New York City’s five boroughs while still under suspicion, Frankel sends Grant and his bride-to-be to Hawaii to dig up as much as they can about Pablo and hopefully locate him. Unfortunately, they pretty much come up empty. On their way back to NYC, they learn that Frankel broke his five-borough restriction. He ends up finding Pablo in Maine, but not in the way he had intended, which only leads to more disturbing discoveries and questions that need to be answered as soon as possible.

SHOULD I FALL is an expertly plotted mystery with characters whom readers have grown to care about. Shepherd has raised the stakes significantly and put one of his principal players in peril, which makes the suspense factor that much more intense and the emotional investment through the roof. I cannot wait to spend more time with these engaging characters.

The second book in the Austin Grant series finds our Scotland Yard detective and his daughter, Rachel, fighting to save one of their own – Rachel’s fiancée and NYC cop John Frankel. After Frankel’s ex-wife is found dead in his apartment, he becomes the prime suspect in a case that spans the country from Hawaii to Maine. A character driven mystery with a great plot!

Thank you NetGalley and HighBridge Audio for accepting my request to read and review Should I Fall.

This mystery, generally speaking, is okay. The story is not new. It's like an episode of Dragnet, the names and places change.

I didn't have feelings, good or bad, for any of the characters. I had just a tad of a thought with the explanation for an estranged father and daughter becoming chummy; however as quickly as the thought came, it left. Also I'm not fond of adults of a mature age whiney and teen-like in their second relationships, and there is more than a little of that.

Overall, this was just meh.

I did have the audiobook, and really liked his performance. He definitely was a plus.

I would read the author again, in an airport, on a bus, some place where I might not want to be all engrossed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Mysterious Press for an advance audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I was intrigued by the book description of a daughter of a retired Scotland Yard investigator who is engaged to NYC police detective John Frankel. I was all in when Rachel discovers her fiancé’s wife, dead in his apartment.

This fast paced who-done-it adventure has Rachel and her father on a plane to Hawaii to try to prove John’s innocence, while he evades his own coworkers as he works state side while the bodies pile up..

Things I loved -
Austin Grant has some smooth moves for an old guy.
The side trip to Hawaii and the descriptions of this dream destination.
The mix of British, New York and Hawaiian locations and personalities.

One thing that left me sort of deflated is the way the female characters seem to be really secondary to the plot. Rachel is John’s fiancé and Austin’s daughter but not really her own person. I cringed a little bit when John is on the phone making work calls and she is on the phone making wedding plans.

That said, I found this is actually a sequel - book 2 of “Austin Grant of Scotland Yard” so maybe Rachel is just a secondary character.

I will go back and read book one and recommend this to anybody who likes a fast paced detective mystery.

3.5 rounded up. this is the second book and the Austin Grant of Scotland yard series. I recently read the first book and I did enjoy this one more. The premise was very good and the story got off to a great start. I had a good feel for the characters having read the first book which takes place six months previous to this one. there were some good twists and the revelation of the guilty party in the end was a surprise and very unexpected. this was a quick read and held my attention throughout. There was a teaser near the end hinting that the former Scotland yard commander would be moving to New York and setting up a private investigation firm which peaks my interest for the next book in the series. I feel that would definitely increase the potential for the upcoming books in this series.

Many thanks to the author and Mysterious Press for my review copy.

In 2021 I enjoyed the first book in the Austin Grant series so I was happy to receive a finished copy of the second book, Should I Fall. Thanks to Mysterious Press and Tandem Literary for sending.

Author Scott Shepherd catches the reader up on pertinent information about what transpired in The Last Commandment so if you’re new to the series you won’t be lost. I do recommend reading that book if only to get all the details on our main characters (Austin, his daughter Rachel, and NYC detective John Frankel).

In this book a dead body is found in John’s apartment. And not just any body – it’s his ex wife. Terrible timing since John is about to marry Rachel! When John is charged with the murder it is up to Rachel and her father to clear him and possibly/hopefully solve the crime. At times things seemed a bit too convoluted but I assume many crime investigations play out the same and not in a straight line, right? At any rate, the pace was good and there were enough twists to keep me flipping the pages to arrive at the conclusion.

I’m happy that the series will continue and look forward to what case will land next at Austin Grant’s desk.

So many twists and turns in this murder mystery when Rachel shows up to her soon to be husband's apartment to leave a gift in his luggage when what does she find but his murdered ex-wife. This starts the whirlwind chase for clues for the real killer while John who is a NYC Detective is being frame for the murder. Rachel's father is a recently retired Inspector from Scotland Yard and on the next plane from the UK and he joins in the hunt which takes us from New York to Hawaii to Maine and everywhere in between. Bodies are piling up and it isn't until the end we find out who really does it. This one had me intrigued. I guess there was a book before this one but I didn't miss it but if I come across it I will certainly grab it up!

A rather contrived plot requiring multiple suspensions of disbelief to accept unlikely actions, hidden storylines and coincidences. One glaring error in the text which - together with the contrived plot - suggests that the book wasn't edited, just accepted from the author 'as was'. An unnecessarily saccharine epilogue which felt written for a low quality TV movie. Over all, while there were a few things to like - which *just* kept me reading to the end - this was disappointing.

Rachel Grant, soon to be married to John Frankel, enters his apartment to find John’s ex-wife dead. Frankel is brought in for questioning, and Rachel calls her father, retired Scotland Yard inspector Austin Grant.

Father and daughter begin investigating, convinced John is innocent. John, meanwhile, refuses to divulge the reasons for a series of suspicious looking actions he had made prior to Julia’s murder. He also investigates, evading police notice, and looking even more like the only suspect in the murder.

A lot of secrets are unearthed, including gambling debts, broken friendships, and multiple identities. The case is solved in tragedy (too conveniently) and a wedding.

I know this particular sentiment will be in the minority amongst readers of this book, but I really did not like John Frankel, and the author never made me care about him. I also did not particularly like Rachel’s initial jealous thoughts about Julia—this just felt like a lazy bit of characterization where a male author would automatically think a woman would be jealous of her fiancé’s ex-wife. The only character I sort of liked was Grant.

I enjoyed the mystery, but I didn’t really care about two of the three main characters. I was more interested in the resolution to the puzzle, instead of caring about whether Frankel would get out of jail. So, interesting mystery, uninteresting characters.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Penzler Publishers for this ARC in exchange for my review.

Originally posted on my blog Nonstop Reader.

Should I Fall is the second Austin Grant procedural mystery by Scott Shepherd. Released 7th June 2022 by Penzler, it's 312 pages and is available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. Paperback format due out in 2nd quarter 2023 from the same publisher.

This is a very well constructed mystery thriller. Despite being the second book in the series, it works perfectly well as a standalone and it wasn't difficult to follow the story with the information given. It's a twisty plot, with multiple threads converging in a bit-too-convenient and slightly sappy climax and resolution.

The book isn't completely problem-free. It was difficult to engage with protagonist John; he's surprisingly unlikable. The ending and resolution were also weaker than anticipated. All in all though, it's a worthwhile and entertaining read, even though the MC makes some decisions in the course of the book which were phenomenally stupid and really, as an officer of the law (current OR former) should have *known* better.

Three and a half stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

Being accused of one murder is bad; two is horrendous, and the timing couldn't be worse. Detective John Frankel and investigative journalist Rachel Grant are supposed to get married in England next week. But first, those charges need to be dropped.

Trouble is, when Austin Grant, Rachel's father and former Scotland Yard detective, arrive in the US, they take off for Hawaii to see if they can track down who really killed John's first wife, his ex. And John takes off, too, to Maine, because he suspects the answers may lie there. He's right, when he finds the second body, and blood, in a cemetery, but that isn't the end of the tangled web that has caught him. Will his second wedding never occur, particularly when he's caught again and this time held in jail? Perhaps the skills of Rachel's father can help, even if he is supposed to be retired.

When John Frankel’s ex-wife is discovered dead on the floor of his Manhattan studio apartment, the NYPD Detective instantly becomes the prime suspect in her murder. Then more information surfaces, linking his gun to the fatal bullet, a motive is discovered, and Frankel flees the city, all of which further convinces his colleagues of his guilt. This is the second in the Austin Grant series and is an excellent continuation of the first. Taking place 6 months later there is still enough backstory to give you insight into the recurring characters. This is a fast paced, engaging mystery that I kept imagining as a TV movie or at the very least a series. I’m looking forward to the next book in this thrilling series. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.

In a nutshell, Should I Fall is the story of a cop who demonstrates incredibly poor judgment, an utter lack of faith in his own profession and co-workers and engages in the most despicably stupid actions when his ex-wife turns up dead in his apartment and he goes on the lamb. His fiancé, Rachel, a journalist, and her retired Scotland Yard detective father (Austin) decide they will investigate, also demonstrating an utter lack of confidence in the police – unless they are also from the Yard. After thoroughly disparaging the NYPD and their ability to conduct a fair and complete investigation, Rachel and her father blunder about doing pretty much nothing whatsoever.

Terrible story, terrible plot, uninspired characters. Paul Woodson narrated well.

thank you so much to @mysteriouspress @scottshepherdauthor #tandemliterary & @penzlerpub for sending me a copy of:
SHOULD I FALL by scott shepherd (fiction) the follow-up to The Last Commandment revisits the father-daughter grant duo, and places rachel’s fiancé john smack in the middle of a murder investigation + this well-paced puzzler kept me glued to the pages, and i loved every twisty bit

“The next thing he knew, Julia Molinari was dead in his apartment.
By then, Frankel knew he had what could be construed as a reason to murder his ex-wife. Luckily for him, the cops, who had been desperately seeking a motive, didn’t know what it was.
Yet.”

In the days before her wedding, Rachel Grant discovers the body of her fiancé's ex-wife on the floor of his apartment. Her fiancé, John, is an NYPD detective and he becomes the primary suspect. Rachel enlists the assistance of her father, Austin, a retired Scotland Yard inspector, to help prove her prove John's innocence. Should I Fall is a good detective story, which I enjoyed despite figuring out part of the solution midway.

What a treat it was to rejoin Scotland Yard's Austin Grant and NYPD detective John Frankel (first introduced in THE LAST COMMANDMENT). In SHOULD I FALL, Grant's daughter and Frankel's fiancé Rachel is determined to clear Frankel's name after his ex-wife is found murdered in his apartment. It's a game of cat-and-mouse as more victims are discovered and the action moves from New York to Hawaii and Maine. A gripping international thriller. I hope to see more of these compelling characters.

I didn't realise that there had been a book before this one, however that didn't take anything away from the enjoyme nt of this book. It was well written with good character development and an engaging and gripping sotryline. I couldn't put this book down, it was fast paced, twisty and unpredictable. I am definitely going to read the book before this one and more from the author in general.

Does it mean I'm reading too many crime novels when I start figuring out the plot long before the end?? Nevertheless, I enjoy Scott Shepherd's characters and fast paced narrative, as well as the settings--it's hard not to like a vicarious trip to Hawaii! I will definetely keep my eye out for future installments in this series.
