After reading Dark Light, I though the story was pretty well wrapped up and I couldn't imagine what Ms. Clapton could possibly add to it. I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong. Luminous Shadows continues where Dark Light had left us. Katherine wounds have healed and lives a 'sort of' normal life with the help of her beloved Sterling. The thing is she feels followed. Hunter not only left scars on her body, but he has also left her emotionally scarred. She might never be the same…
In this sequel, although Ms. Clapton's style hasn't changed, it has matured. The characters' emotions show more, even in the dialogues. Once again, I found myself rooting for the strong heroin, who albeit her near death experience, shows courage all through the story, and for the poor Sterling, who feels responsible for all that happened to her. After all, Hunter would never have so much as looked at her twice if not for him.
That brings me to the villain, Hunter, the one we learned to hate in the first book. Yet again, Ms. Clapton goes deep into his mind. Although he is clearly deranged, he feels very real, scary real. He's just as devious as he was in Dark Light and just as much 'in love' with Sterling. I liked how his irrational thoughts lead him to think that he's doing him a service. And, against all odds, that made me, I wouldn't go as far as like him, but at least appreciate him. He's like a dog on a discarded bone, and he just won't let it go.
Luminous Shadows is sweet romance with a slight touch of paranormal and let's not forget a surprising ending. Although it helps to have read book I, I believe someone who would pick it up without knowing it was a sequel would be able to follow the story easily.
